Do you know roughly how far back this practice dates to?
It is difficult to say. Our research focuses on the late 15th to 17th centuries, when it was certainly in use.
Guessing this would not hold up in the wash?
We have always done it on fabrics that have been dry cleaned so can't say whether it would stand washing or not.
