  • Jane and Ninya don thimbles to demonstrate a simple technique for finishing eyelets to make lacing (or unlacing) in a hurry very efficient.
This finishing method is especially helpful for a side-lacing kirtle such as the one they are working on in the video because it has two long laces to wrangle into place for a comfortable fit.
The linen thread and beeswax featured in the video can be purchased in The Tudor Tailor's shop: shop.tudortail...

I worked the original Renaissance Pleasure Faire in Southern California. We used grommets for lacing and we couched them to cover the metal. I have bodices from decades ago that are still in great shape using this method. It's great to see historical techniques and see the differences.

I was JUST making my mending list and top of the list was to add eyelets to a linen gown. This came at the perfect time for me! Thank you!

Ah, this was very helpful for reducing my trepidation of eyelets and decreasing my procrastination for my next attempt at tudor dress!

Thank you so much for sharing this! I do something very similar, so I'm happy to know I'm on the right track. :)

This was SUPER helpful! I'm in the process of making a black worsted kirtle and have only finished two eyelets in black silk (my modern sensibilities got the better of me). After watching this, I'm going to go back and use unbleached linen. Can I ask what weight linen thread you're using? Thanks for sharing!

Hi, glad to hear it! We use the same linen thread we sell in our shop, which is an unbleached, 2 ply 35/2 shop.tudortailor.com/products/tudor-style-linen-thread-and-optional-beeswax-for-hand-sewing-for-renaissance-or-elizabethan-reenactment-bleached-or-unbleached
