    This AI process is different to what you are saying btw. This is entirely separate to dust and scratches removal and cleanup. This AI program created those faces because the program is supposed to "enhance" the footage so it paints over the image AI generated fake details. This is why the faces are so messed up and why everything is artificially sharpened and particularly eyes and hair looks bizarre and almost like CGI. Because it is actually CGI. The AI is quite literally generating and making up its own details. Not a pixel of these 4k images is the film anymore at all, its all the AI's interpretation of the image. It is an insane technology to be applying to films that can just have proper normal restorations.
    Again if we can have proper 4k restorations for films like Absurd and Cannibal Holocaust then it is ABSURD that this "process" is touching any of these studio discs. James Cameron may well have killed physical media and film restoration forever by pushing this technology to be used instead of rescans and restorations.

      Unfortunately it's all about Cost savings. It is far cheaper to utilize an AI program to enhance your image than taking the time and effort for someone to ensure the clean up is accomplished properly. It's like chat GPT, it's fine to use it, but you should always review it to make sure it's hitting all the points you want to make in the correct way. To Richard's point, this was clearly unsupervised. It's a shame because major labels who do not really see value in physical media will continue this approach because it's a cheap option. I'm holding out that boutique labels such as vinegar syndrome, Arrow, Scream Factory etc.... will not go this route because they care about film preservation.

    I am glad to hear from a fellow person who also enjoys Jaws 3 and Jaws 4 as guilty pleasures... Jaws 4 has one of my favorite movie plots. A shark targets members of the Brody family... And when they go on vacation... He somehow gets hold of their vacation plans and follows them to the Bahamas...

    If the domino effect continues and studios continue to use AI instead of actual restorations then we can legitimately say goodbye to Physical Media. When people reject these AI discs and no-one buys them then studios will stop releasing physical media, and we WILL reject AI """""restorations"""""".
    This AI process will destroy Physical Media if it isnt stopped.

    When I complained about Aliens 4K, people said “James Cameron can do what he wants with his movie” or “If you don’t like it, don’t buy it”. They’re missing the point. Others said it looks fantastic. Those same people probably use that action smoothing/soap opera effect on their TV and love it.

      I do. And am fine with it. I do wish that these new releases should offer two versions though. "Original w/ 4K scan" and "2024 Director 4K Remaster" so purists can choose

    • @extofer
      @extofer 5 месяцев назад

      I don’t use motion smoothing on my tv, but I also don’t mind the Aliens release. Do I wish James Cameron would have kept the 4k closer to the original theatrical release? Sure. But James Cameron will do what he wants and we probably won’t get another version of the film in 4k with DV. If you don’t like it, search for an old dvd release of it. There’s nothing you can do otherwise.

    • @garyrichardson475
      @garyrichardson475 5 месяцев назад

      @@extofer Not DVD but I'll watch the Blu-ray next time. As I understand, for some reason, the Aliens 4K is sourced from an old 2K scan. I guess, the film is not worthy of a new 4K scan. Meanwhile, Vinegar Syndrome has no problem doing a new 4K scan and 4K disc for things like "The Werewolf Versus Vampire Woman".

    I get that Jaws 3 and Jaws the Revenge are considered by many to be poor films. Regardless, they do have their fans and they're entitled to have the films presented with the best PQ and AQ possible. If Universal didn't want to invest the time and effort into these two releases they should have licensed them to a boutique label. Cranking up the AI button to 11 on Jaws 3 and calling it a day is just lazy. And there's zero reason for those jarring and unnecessary audio changes in Revenge. Also I'd be remiss not to mention Universal's failed opportunity of not including the "alternate ending" of Revenge (which is actually the original U.S. theatrical ending) via a seamless branching option. Why they keep using that international "exploding shark" ending for the main feature is baffling. Really disappointed in how Universal mishandled both releases. I actually do think Universal should offer replacement discs for both of these titles. Just because they're not Academy Award winning films or huge blockbusters doesn't make them any less deserving of being corrected.

    As I understand it the same problems are on the discs. In Jaws 3 it seems like the AI (or software) has been trying to sdd details to scenes with a short depth of field and sadly not understood that it is used to isolate a charachter. Sadly too it could not recreate people in the background well. So it seems alot of the original intention was ”corrected” away.
    We will see. I am also awaiting the movies.
    Glad you are back after that hurricane!

      They could just stop releasing everything on 4k. Alot of people need to come back to reality, not everything is meant to be in 4k, not everything is shot in 4k. Heavy FX films are generally shot in 2k tops. 4 of the 6 Star Wars films were shot in 2k on film and the other two were 2k digital and, not meant to be 4k, technically they're not its 4k upscale from the 1080p blu-ray. There have never been 4k masters made from any film negative.
      Aliens was likely shot also in 2k. You start to damage the image quality when you start pushing it beyond what it was meant to be.

    • @garyrichardson475
      @garyrichardson475 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@lutherheggs451 Most older films were shot in 35mm, which has a resolution that exceeds 4K. So, when the original negative exists for a 35mm, there's usually an advantage to a 4K Blu-ray. Aliens was shot in 35mm (and was even blown up to 70mm for some screenings). Jaws 3-D may not benefit from 4K since it was shot in 35mm with two images per frame. But the problem with Jaws 3-D is not whether it's 2K or 4K but that they unnaturally manipulated the image.

      @@garyrichardson475 I remember seeing Aliens again in the cinema as a special run in 1997. At that time it was still on "Actual film" I remember thinking how the picture looked a bit soft and grainy. Aliens never looked super sharp, because the film they were using (or the process) was different in the mid 80's. A 1970's film always looked a lot more pure and sharp compared to an 80's film. Even 2001: A Space Odyssey, from the 60's, looks incredible on bluray compared to say, Robocop....
      I don't see how they can make Aliens look much better on 4k simply by transferring it. A fake, sacrilegious program which airbrushes all the graininess away and generates outlines around everything to create an "HD look" would be the only way.(Yuck)

    AI has no place in film restoration if you ask me. Humans wrote, shot, and edited the movies…We should restore them too. We’re the ones who will be watching them so why allocate anything to AI beyond laziness/cheaping out. Hopefully the sales of these discs show that we don’t want this to be how 4K transfers are handled in the future. Don’t buy this crap!
