  • Come join Greg Foot on a scientific adventure diving down into the deep dark ocean! Starting on the deck of the 'Baseline Explorer', you’ll be lifted out into the waves, you’ll be cleared to dive, then you'll break the surface and head down, further and further, until you reach the side of an underwater volcano 250m under the surface, in the Twilight Zone just off the coast of Bermuda!
    Your guide is Greg Foot - the Science Guy on Blue Peter and popular host of the RUclips Channel BBC Earth Lab [and lots of other stuff on RUclips, TV, Radio and Stage - More about Greg at www.gregfoot.com].
    Greg’s drive was part of ocean charity Nekton's mission to deliver the XL Catlin Deep Ocean Survey. Nekton’s mission is to explore and research the ocean, the planet’s most critical, yet least explored, frontier. More info at www.nektonmission.org
    Huge thanks to Nekton, XL Catlin, Project Baseline, Triton Submersibles, Global Underwater Explorers and all the crew on the Baseline Explorer.
    Shot & edited by Greg Foot. Additional footage courtesy of Nekton / XL Catlin Deep Ocean Survey. Thanks also to Alex4D.

      Mike Productions Co yeah a small squid is nothing, but these big ones are completely different. they are hunters at the end of the day and a hungry humboldt squid big enough to kill you (not very hard to kill a human underwater if you’re a squid) definitely will, a squid that size will fucking destroy you underwater.

      Mike Productions Co i’m not talking about the giant squid, the humboldt squid is different and there’s decent knowledge on it, it’s nowhere near the size of the actual giant squid, the humboldt can reach only 6 feet and 110 pounds, the giant squid can reach 43 feet and 610 pounds so look at what the humboldt can do to humans and imagine what the giant squid can do, there’s not many attacks cause humans aren’t super vulnerable to them because of diving suits and generally not being in their environment and especially not when they’re feeding

    I would dare to go to the space but not down to the deep ocean. I’m scared of water. Can’t breath. But there is vacuum in the space and also cannot breath... I can’t explain why I feel this way.

    • @eegma5596
      @eegma5596 6 лет назад +42

      Your average deep space is indeed a much better place to be than deep underwater. If you get flung off into space, you exhale all of the air from your lungs and lose conciousness within 15 seconds as water evaporates from the surface of your somewhat inflated body. You then have 90 seconds to be taken back into the ship until permanent damage starts occuring, death following shortly after. If there's a breach in your deep underwater habitat however, the water immediately fills up the room, tearing and shattering anything that's not a thick layer of steel, including any humans that happen to be inside.
      There's only 1 atm difference between vacuum and sea level, but at least 100 atm between sea level and 1 km underwater.

      Save the planet? More like reverse what we have done lol, btw things like this will damage the planet more than save it, theres no reason for a human to be this deep in the ocean, its just disturbing the ecology, and i dont think we can save the planet btw, whenever someone talks about the welbeing of animals or nature theres always that one...not one actually a lot of people who start hating and throwing insults for no reason without trying to understand why they care about the planet. Basically the whole reason why veganism is hated, you care about something the majority doesnt care about and youre suddenly hated. But when people start talking more about the racism and homophobia "problems" theyre suddenly a "good person" and care about the well being of the "world".
      I hope that people in the future will care more about the enviroment like the protests against homophobia and racism nowadays, cause i think pollution and climate change are much bigger problems than the other two i mentioned, and also animal cruelty in industrial farms.

    When you are 250 meters deep, the pressure on the hatch alone is about 125 tons.
    Math:
    One atm = 10 tons per square meter approx
    250 meters = 25 atm
    Hatch is let's say 80 centimeters across, so radius = 0.4, so area = πR2 = 0,314 x 0.4 x 0.4 = 0.5024 m2
    Pressure = 25 atm x 10 tons per square meter x 0.5 m2 = 125 tons.

      scientists have been finding out fairly recently that a lot of animals are nearly as smart as humans, some possibly equally intelligent. just thought it was worth considering that there might be a species or two as intelligent as humans, so to call any one of us "dominant" might not be right. dolphins seem to have a fully developed language, for example, and they have names.
      as far as modifying our environments, beavers do that as in building dams they change the river around them, and on a smaller scale any ant or bird that builds a nest is changing its environment to suit its needs. plenty of animals burrow to keep warm, that's changing their environment too.

      @@indielesbian132 There is a difference between putting a couple of hundred sticks together and having a worldwide civilisation that has been to the moon and has the capability to destroy every living thing on the planet. There are no species (that we know of) that is as intelligent as us. The ones that come close such as ravens, dolphins and chimps are about on par with the average 5 year old. Besides, intelligence is irrelivent in this debate. We are by far the dominent species on the planet. We can practically control any other living thing on Earth and we are the only species to live on every continent. We have developed thousands of languages, each one more complex than any other animals' communication. We can kill thousands of creatures with the press of a button. And we can overcome our physical weaknesses with technology.

    I must have watched this video a thousand times, and I still get jealous every time. :-)
    I love it.

      Yup... My immeasurably moronic, deep-sea-fearing brain still wants to do this. When I daydream about life-altering lottery winnings, this is what I picture. Not fast cars. Not fast women. Not gold or diamonds.
      Just a sub and myself in a world I fear and love. There is a siren-song in midst of that fear of the dark and unseen. A powerful allure woven into the terror of a different universe.

    What a beautiful Creation of God ❤️, to think that we haven’t explored sooo much of the deep oceans.

      They say we have only explored 10 or 3 percent of the ocean
