In 1998, Kazunori Yamauchi, a Japanese game designer and accomplished racing driver, realized his long-held ambition of creating a true-to-life driving simulator by launching the highly acclaimed Gran Turismo video game series for the Sony PlayStation. A decade later, in 2008, former Nissan Europe executive Darren Cox founded the GT Academy, a popular television program offering skilled Gran Turismo players the rare opportunity to embark on a professional racing career with Nissan. In 2011, Jann Mardenborough, a talented SIM racer from Britain, overcame the doubts of his stern father, Steve Mardenborough, to emerge victorious in the competition. Along with Jack Salter, a former race-car driver, the underdog team faced the daunting challenge of competing with the world's most elite athletes, risking everything.

Watched this in theatre and this movie had people gasping and cheering like we were actually at the races. Such an underrated film!!!
The story with the Dad not supporting his sons dream because to him "that's not a real career path", that hits me so hard. I wasn't a great racing gamer. But back in old CoD MW 2 days I was invited to join a ESports team, but my Dad wouldn't let me because it's not real. I always wish he just supported me. I love my Dad, I always just think "what if?".

I think we all have one of those stories unfortunately. I'm a dad now and even I'm guilty of it in hindsight.
Reality is, 99% of the time, the dads are right. Its only the 1% that actually make it into a real career path.
@@williamvanderscheer4327 Very true, however - it's the same with actual pro sports. Ok, maybe in football the percentage is a bit higher, but otherwise it's the exact same deal. And yet, parents wouldn't step in nearly as often, if their kids got offered a spot on a junior or B team for a Premiership or Championship side. It's really quite unfortunate.

Just FYI Jann is still racing this weekend in 24 hours in Spa.
One of the best parts in this movie is how it validates videogames as both a tool and as an art form... It is pretty much a manifesto against prejudice over videogames.
I was honestly surprised with how great the movie was. I liked how much it integrated the games into real life and I’m glad that they made this movie the way that they did.
On the topic of sim racers being able to compete with real racers;
Current reigning F1 world champion Max Verstappen and by many considered the best driver in the world today, is also a huge proponent of sim racing and amongst the highest rated in many of the big games. He is so passionate about it that people often joke F1 is just a hobby while his sim racing is his actual career. Just a few weeks ago he won the virtual 24H of Nuerburgring ON THE SAME DAY that he won the imola grand prix in Italy. He also truly believes many of the skills aquired during sim racing can transfer to real life.
In fact he is planning (and in the process of) setting up his own racing team to do just that; bring sim racers onto real tracks.
As much as I dislike Max in F1, the guy is an absolute legend for what he's doing for gamers and their image.
The only way to really get experience as a sim racer that will transfer to actual racing will cost you several thousands of $ to buy a proper sim rig.
You mentioned that top racers use sims. A good one to note is that Max Verstappen, the current F1 champion, also competes in Iracing doing GT racing. During the F1 Imola Grand Prix he also took part in the virtual 24h Nurburgring, and his team won it with him doing two stints as well as qualifying pole then winning the irl F1 race.
It's amazing to see how far sim racing has come and how much more respect people have for it now, and Jann Mardenborough (and the Nissan team) is a huge part of that.
Even though it's not 100% accurate to what actually happened, this movie is amazing fun to watch.
I grew up playing Gran Turismo. I had a fun time watching this movie. It wasn't a movie I'd go to the theater for, but it was the perfect streaming platform movie imo lol.
As someone who watched in theaters. It was honestly one of the best experiences. Especially in 4dx!
So happy that you guys watched this! For Mason Quinn who was surprised he missed who Geri was (Ginger spice) she is married to Christian Horner who is the F1Red Bull team principle. She has been a familiar face in the F1 paddock for years and had always wanted to be part of a racing movie.
if you're wondering, the crash at Nurburg happened in real life almost the exact same way and theres a video of the crash on YT
They played with the timeline a little though, the LeMans race happened before that one did.

David Harbour made this movie a million times better.. his acting is phenomenal and can’t wait to watch him in the final season of stranger things next year
The car flipping on LeMans actually happened 1999 with Peter Dumbreck driving a Mercedes CLR.
I remember countless hours spent on building and tuning to spec over four hundred cars on four memory cards built for each track and the fun it was. Loved all your reactions to GT.
This quickly became one of my favorite films ever made. My relationship with my father has felt so much like Jann’s in many ways, so those scenes with the two of them together hit really hard. Even with how many times I’ve seen it, my heart still gets racing with every scene on the track.
I loved seeing your reaction to this movie! There is a drag strip I use to compete on near my house I was one of only 5 woman, so I'm loving just the sound of the cars.
Now you have to see Rush (2013) and Days of Thunder (1990)!!! O.O

I saw this at the theaters and went in with lower than low expectations not truly knowing the actual story. By the end I was blown away by how good it was. A very prestigious cast, great acting, good pacing and just the right amount of video game corniness. I would definitely recommend this movie.
Edited for a little trivia. Not sure if you guys knew, but the real life Jann actually did some stunt driving for the movie.
As much as I love the Forza Horizon racing games, Gran Turismo will always be iconic and this movie made me want to play the games with one of those gaming steering wheels 😄

Loved this movie! What seemed weird in terms of just how *most* races work; You can't just block a pass on a *turn* without being frowned upon. Straightaways are obviously wide enough to allow you to do so with less risk of crashing or wiping someone out. But on turns, you can't bump someone out or close that space, or else, you'll be penalized. It's even penalized on Gran Turismo online when detected. In the words of Fernando Alonso: "All the time! You have to leave-a the space!"

So underrated. This movie was slept on. The real life Jann being involved in this movie was great as well
I watched this in IMAX. IT. WAS. FUCKING. AMAZING. The audio was incredible. It's the best car audio in any film, ever, period. And those nighttime Le Mans shots...OH MY GOD.
Also: God, that accident at the Ring. He wasn't hurt nearly as bad as they showed - but yes, a spectator was killed. It was absolutely a freak accident. And it was terrifying to watch live.
Another 5! Wow. Wasn't expecting for this one to be honest. Fun movie though. For me Rush is the still the benchmark for racing movies.
The true story was the guy won the Gran Turismo Academy the second year they had it, and the big crash happened after he became a real race car driver, and his family was more supportive than they were portrayed in the movie, and his movie mom was one of the Spice Girls
when he crashed and Y'all said wasn't his fault, actually yes it was, I play GT all the time and when I was in the theater watching that scene, I thought "what are you doing, you are going to turn your car into an airpla.... yep there it goes". Anyone that has played as many hours doing that track as his did should had known that would happen when he pushed it like he did.
If there is one thing that gets to Oak all the time it's FAMILY
This is one of my favourite racing films ever! Very emotional and fun to watch.
When story, plot, acting, music and emotion are in place for any movie, no matter how improbable the concept or stupid and realistic it may seem, even big strong men will cry when a movie is done right. Great directing

Geri Halliwell is married to Christian Horner, the team Principal for the Red Bull F1 team. Over the years she's been at quite a few races and I'm sure she channelled her feelings as the team matriarch into her Mom role here.
I would love seeing yall do challenges. Your early challenge videos make me laugh so hard. I periodically revisit the garage door one just to laugh at Oak essentially waterboarding himself with a beer after poking a hole in the lid, plus Mason Quinn thanking Jesus for his win makes me laugh every single time so hard, even when I know he's about to say it. And Answer just destroying poor Dave on their round! Good times. Also, revisit the Oak trying to kick bottles off yalls heads. LOL
Really good movie. Edit: The Matty Davis character is fictional. That other racer who raced with him in Lemans is a real person and was also in the GT Academy in an earlier year.
Fun Fact: Mom is played by a spice girl. Also have you guys seen RUSH yet?!
The best thing about the movie is that the stunts drivings are done by the real Jann Mardenborough, and the actress qho plays the female racecar driver is a racecar driver and car enthusiast IRL.
Such an underrated movie
Both Nürburgring and Le Mans are considered the hardest and most challenging and dangerous circuits in the world.
There a bunch of different endurance series but the top one is the WEC (World Endurance Championship) where you do the 24 H of Le Mans.
Just watched it and I really enjoyed it, great movie!
PS: They definitely made changes but that just made this movie more dramatic, fun and entertaining, in my opinion.
Ooooh a BM racetrack challenge is a fantastic idea! I think the loser should get buckets of water & foamy soap thrown at them (kinda like a human car wash experience)
Spent many hrs playing this game with my brother back in the day, so that was a nice touch including gameplay with the live action, I loved Quinn's gleeful giddiness watching this film ☺️ & films based on games is either a hit or miss, but this film definitely hit the mark! Great storyline & awesome soundtrack! & liked how it was based on a true story & had such an impact on motor racing industry, thanks for a great reaction video guys! 😎

The women that plays leah vega is a huge car RUclipsr and actress named Emelia Hartford!
The accident at the Nurburgring actually happened IRL and it actually killed people. but also the section of track where it happened is called Flugplatz which translates literally to "Airfield" because of how cars lift off at that section. also this movie may not be the most realistic when it comes to a racing fans perspective but it is fun and tells Jann's story decently well. Also if Y'all enjoyed this film you would love Ford V Ferarri, quite literally the best and most realistic racing movie ever! also even the live action speed racer movie from 2008 is fantastic as a racing film.

I saw this movie on a sneak preview. I had no idea what movie was going to be playing. I absolutely hate watching racing, and I also don't like video games. Any movie that can make me really love it when I don't like any of the topics is an excellent movie in my book. 100 % this movie is underrated.

Solid racing movie, I agree the trailer didn't do the movie justice. I recommend the movie Rush, which is my personal favourite racing movie. The story, music and racing in Rush is incredible.
Life long GT enthusiasts here. Currently cracking out on GT7 like it was released yesterday. Anyway, this movie was better than I thought it would be, but let’s be honest, it’s not gonna win any awards. I still enjoyed it and had fun watching it.

A lot of people just see video games as a thing for kids, but they are more than that. Lots of people have made/started careers thanks to video games. There was a youtuber I'd watch named Old Man Beard Face. He was making modded GTAV online role-playing videos on a server called OCRP. He'd also write scripts for some of these and have full-blown productions. He is now working on a film production team and has left OCRP and RUclips.

I didn't have any expectations for this movie, neither did i play GT or even liked the game, I just watched the movie. And when they were racing I got so excited, like sitting on the edge of my seat. It's just a good movie, not great, but was really exciting and got me invested. It's not like a hidden gem... but let's call it a hidden gold coin. Way better and exciting racing than fast and furious etc
I thought the full trailer for this movie was initially fantastic. I think the issue was not the trailer, but the preconception audiences have with the number of poor video game movies, to believe the movie could live up to the trailer, and that was the bigger issue. And besides the movie trailer showing the inclusion and performance of David Harbour to show the movie’s quality, the reason I was willing to give the movie a chance to live up the the fantastic trailer was the director’s name at the end, Neill Blomkamp. And indeed, he elevated the video game genre here.
There were a few computer generated scenes that I legitimately believed were real 😅
This is a rare occasion for me...I hate the Games but I like the movie.
