  • Some of the essential work for Japanese Black Pine bonsai is needle plucking and bud selection. We can also wire and style our Black Pines at this time. With pines, one of the keys to successful development is the understanding and application of good technique to balance the strength of the tree. We can do this with these procedures.

    If I remember correctly. Needle plucking is only done when you have the final basic branch structure you want? Not counting the outer, younger small branches at the end of each branch.

      Needle plucking is also done to balance the strength of your pine. So the strong areas don't continue to get stronger at the expense of the weaker areas of the tree. So it is used for design but more importantly to help balance the allocation of resources in your pine bonsai.

    At what age of a black pine do you start actually candle cut, prune and remove needles?

    • @BonsaiMatsu
      @BonsaiMatsu  2 года назад +2

      It all depends what your plan is with the pine. If you’re developing and thickening then leave it to grow. If you are trying to balance resources then candle breaking is really useful. There’s no set age you start using these techniques.
