  • Eric revisits a large decandled Japanese Black Pine bonsai tree that he first covered in June 2021, this time focused on fall clean up. This tree has been container grown for the entirety of its 15 years, grown from seed.
    0:28 Focus in the fall is on bud thinning, needle puling, and removing old needles from the tree to create more space.
    1:22 Ensure the technique you use is applicable to the particular tree you're working on. With this tree, because of the density of the crown foliage, some of the lower needles aren't getting enough light. That's why the needle pulling process is so important for this tree.
    2:47 Remember, each time you pull a needle you are removing a potential site for the tree to put out new growth!
    3:41 What Eric looks at across each branch before he begins work.
    3:58 Close-up of decandling sites from the summer & seeing the summer growth. To keep a silhouette compact, remove the longest of the summer buds.
    5:35 Pull off discolored, long, or dangling needles to clean up the branching.
    7:14 Eric focuses on the top of the tree, and why some work will need to wait another year.
    8:56 Eric talks through the work and decisions he made during the cleanup process.

    You explained how the crown will be pruned next summer to control the growth so well. That really makes sense and I hope that you can show us the results in a year from now.

    That tree is incredible for 15 years from seed in containers. I've nurtured some 10 year old JBPs from seed and they look nothing like that. But 5 years could make all the difference if we have some good summers for once in London. And now I've watched your vids of course. Thanks.

    Thank you. An informative video. Did you do any wiring, or do you do that later in the year?

      I did not do any wiring, but I had wired this tree a bit in the summer after decandling it. It could be further wired right now, but I think in this case re-wiring after cutback next summer will work better.

    Hey how's it going greetings from Chicago! I have a quick question I have an Austrian pine( I believe) but I want to know when would be a good time to do a " severe" trunk chop at the crown?? It's an a 10 gallon pot needs to be repotted also. In height it's about 2 ft or less.

      Austrian pine is a different animal. However I think any pine is safe to prune back hard in fall (maybe a bit late in Chicago now but not sure.) And for some pines early - to -mid-summer pruning is also very good.

    Are you working any deciduous trees this fall?

    • @Bonsaify
      @Bonsaify  2 года назад

      Yes. Although my "fall" is very late generally. Usually the first two weeks of December. I've been waiting for the elms to start turning, and they're looking like they're thinking about it. And I have a hornbeam and some oaks to work on as well. Not sure what the video will look like tbh, but thanks for asking!

    Beautiful tree. Is that a stone or a big corky fin?

    • @Bonsaify
      @Bonsaify  2 года назад +1

      it is a root-over-rock. I had the rock laying about 15 years ago and decided to use it. I suspect it's weathered serpentine, but I'm not sure.

      Oh nice. It’s a great stone! Works really well with that tree too.

    How do you winter your pines? I'm thinking of getting a black pine, and I also live in San Francisco, but everything I consult says it doesn't get cold enough here. Yet you've clearly got it sorted out. Any advice?

      These live outdoors in full sun year-round in my San Francisco yard. Black pines do fine, even great here. Some other pines that are native to high elevations do require more cold. But black pines are fine.

    Do you offer classes all about JBP?

    • @Bonsaify
      @Bonsaify  2 года назад

      At the moment, no, I only teach a monthly BYOT workshop in SF, and do individual instruction. In the next few years I am planning some virtual classes as well.
