Season 7 Episode 3 - Banksia as Bonsai, When to Stop Persisting
Contact Scott from Bonsai Matsu (www.buzzsprout.com/twilio/text_messages/263290/open_sms)
One of the most iconic Australian species of tree is the grand Banksia and there are 173 different species (according to natureaustralia.org.au). They make the most magnificent bonsai and there are 'rules' to their successful care and I think everyone should have at least one in their collection. The Banksia has so much to offer. We all have trees in our collection that just don't develop the way we have expected or that you just cannot see the future bonsai in. What do you do with those trees? I'll discuss a few strategies.

Thanks this was helpful! Growing out a coastal banksia and it's doing very well in the summer heat. Seemed to be fine with heavy root work, fortunately. Previously killed one so we'll see 😅
@@TeamFishweights good luck! They’re a beautiful tree to work with.
Hi Scott, great video, could you please tell me what your drainage layer is? thanks
Excellent as always Scott
Fantastic kick off, and I'm glad you took the 1 week off. So much information, and grateful for your commitment 👍
Thank you for your efforts, I really look forward to the weekly podcast. I have learnt so much.

Great tree but the music is annoying and couldn't hear a word
Be nice to know which cultivar is this. Seems like varieties of BC have grown
Thanks for 2024 podcasts they have been very helpful . HNY Scott

All the best man. So much appreciation for you and your work
@@wreagin1 🙏🏻
Are we sure this is an Ericifolia? They typically don't have tough looking bark like that, they're one of the very soft papery varieties. Additionally they usually have much shorter leaves than the ones on this.
@@aidanfurst8512 you’re probably right. Most likely a Melaleuca armillaris??
@BonsaiMatsu That's what I'd been thinking. There are a couple of Armillaris as plantings on my street which look identical to this one. Always hard to be certain with Mels though!
Thanks, really helpful😃😃
Excellent info, thanks Scott
Hey Scott, Nice work on the pod. Im busy too at the moment and its hot as F.... here. My natives are pushing hard! Merry Xmas mate
Very cool. Very very cool.
Is this type of maintenance done in the summer, spring, fall, or winter?
@@Shackattack85 late summer or early fall depending on the temperature. This video was made in late summer for me.
Thanks so much
Wish my early days had someone explain the initial design process to me in that way. I got the more advanced branch here, branch here, shape it here - all the secondary decisions pushed on to me and the tree before the initial design startup work as you explained. Great episode Scott
@@JohnRyanMBC thank you!
G'day Scott, what time of year did you do this pruning? Looks like maybe January or February?
@@robdarnley any time from now through to February will be fine. It actually needs a clean up again right now but I’m decandling so the banksia needs to wait a little longer.
How about some video about Aaron’s place and activities ?
@@percyacutt3110 have a look at Shiro Bonsai on instagram. There’s plenty of content and videos about his cafe, nursery and workshops.
Hi, Post decandling ... I've noticed a yellowing of the needle (base/s). Think it could be due to over watering. Should one reduce watering slightly, after decandling, or significantly?
@@elbietaljaard2195 that’s unusual and yes watch the watering. Make sure it’s not a fungal issue too.
Thank you!
Thanks so much
What fungicide do you recommend/use? Thanks again for the great podcasts
There are a couple that I use but the most common in Mancozeb. Just make sure you use it as per the manufacturers recommendations.
@@BonsaiMatsu I just did a round of Yates Mancozeb Plus yesterday on a Mugo pine that was having some needles turning brown and plucked the effected needles. Hopefully it recovers.
Another spectacular native 😲 Is that banksia from yamadori?
@@Coltrain561 no it was originally from Tasmania I am told
What an amazing tree 😮 Will they back bud if you do major trunk chops on the bare branches?
@@Coltrain561 they may but the branch may also die back. Best to improve the strength of the tree and encourage back budding then reduce the branch length.
@ ok thanks heaps for the reply. Should I wait until the start of next spring or would it be safe to start to reduce now?
@ mine needs a haircut again now so I’ll be doing a prune very soon
@ I’ll keep an eye out for it. Cheers Scott 👍
This is brilliant. I cant believe there a so few likes and comments! I know you have been up north recently, but Redlands Bonsai Society (Brisbane) would love to have you visit, or combined on your next trip Northwards etc. Very grateful
@@RyanMarsh-k6e thanks Ryan!! That would be awesome
Great explanation of de-candling and candle pruning. Thanks 😊
Haha. Referring to previous episode
Thanks Scott
I like the Jin for the character it provides, although it does look a little heavy. Maybe you could potentially thin it out from the top back to trunk and torch it with fire and brush it with a steel brush to soften it a bit.
I have been listening to your podcast for the last few months. I was wondering how you were setting up the bags. Looks pretty simple. I just need to find some organic fertilizer pellets in my area (US - California). It’s Autumn here, so I’m rounding up my supplies for Spring and doing prep work.
Thanks again,
Hey Scott nice tree!! It looks heavy!!! How often to pot this one? I dont have any that big but my smaller ones every two years
I sometimes find a "dry" spot on the growing media directly below a tea bag ...am I not watering enough (for water to seep through the tea bag)?
@@elbietaljaard2195 yes I think that would be the case.
Lol. "I don't like winswept bonsai." But you've used a picture of one for your podcast profile and your RUclips video wallpaper.
Nice to hear of your adventures, such a beautiful place WA.. lm going away soon and already am midsing my plants so l get it 😊
Such a clear explanation. I have encouraged other Japanese black pine owners to view this. Thank you
I tried to use an angle grinder to work some dead wood on a small tree but I had it spinning the wrong way round and it ripped off all but one branch. Years later it’s one of my favorites :)
Thanks for that! It’s made me laugh because it happened to me with a tree when I first started carving!!! Killed the tree though… The tough lessons we learn 😂😂
Hey Scott, great podcast again. Where do you get your shade cloth in Melbourne from?
@@rixhhh2392 thanks and I’m not sure currently. When I bought mine I hunted for the exact size I needed it close to on eBay and had it shipped.
@@BonsaiMatsu Thanks for the reply, I'll try my luck online.
Great advice Scott, thanking you
Great tips thank you.. I wanted to ask. After deflation do you Keep the tree in the sun, or in the shade ?… and for how long would you do that for ?… to bring the new flush out. I’m doing it to a Japanese Maple. 🙏
@@chris996ss depending on the temperature, if it’s not excessively hot I’ll leave it in full sun. If the temperature is high, shelter it.

This style of trees, in real life, has been a part of my life for 10 beautiful years. I live in Canada, in the province of Ontario. In the 1990s, my wife and I moved in the Georgian bay area. This is a part of our great lakes area where trees are constantly being battered by winds that get blown and pick up speeds over that area coming from the west. This area is at the tip of those lakes and for hundreds of years, those trees have been shaped by these conditions giving a breath taking, almost unreal shape of trees that look permanently frozen in that movement, even when the weather is calm. To say those trees, that landscape is a sight to be seen is an understatement. So I understand that having not lived in such an area makes you wonder how rediculous and unreal this shape is, but, as I discovered then, these wonders do exist. I love your podcast and I'm glad that you express your thoughts like you do. If you ever decide to come in my neck of the world, I would really enjoy showing this area to you. For the meantime, have a look at this link: shorturl.at/AdD7D
@@barzalou I’d love to get to Canada and will let you know if I ever head that way!!
I have 1 windswept but cause l buggered it up firstly as a beginner and had no other option.... looks ok Thanks again
I think windswept and literati are the two most over used “styles”. When you can’t think of what else to do those two seem to be the “oh well” options. I think a lot of people focus too much on action forgetting that bonsai is 90% observation and 10% action. The action is important but it’s not what we do with our trees the majority of the time. Cheers man
Ants ... Cinnamon powder is a great "deterrent"!
Thanks Scott
Hey, why is it I'm getting this on a Sunday? 🤔😁😉😇.... Hello from Canada, going towards the cold as you are enviously going towards heat and good weather. Keep your ambitions going. I enjoy this.
