It is a complex situation and being close to your bonsai is the key. The arrival of Spring comes with a list of responsibilities for us Bonsai Lovers, including growth management and protection of our well loved inner buds. Here's what I'm doing at the moment.

Juniper Bonsai Major Transformation and Styling
Nice one. Great podcasts. You mentioned that tea bags last about a month. Does that mean the contents disintegrate completely in this time? Or do you replace them regardless every month? Cheers.
@@paulgauci2530 it’s not that the contents disintegrate, more that they stop providing anything useful to the bonsai. And it’s very hard to tell when they ‘run out’ but about every month is a good frequency to change them over.
Great tutorial, the “why” explanations were very helpful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. 👍
Awesome tree. I have a few JBP’s in my garden. They’re a lot younger. I haven’t done the bud selection yet. Did your tree always live in a pot or grow pot? Or, was it temporarily “field grown”? I up-potted my first JBP seedling a couple of times. Currently it’s growing in a 10 quart terracotta pot. Doing well, needs a little more work though.
@@jeffreyhutchings561 this one started as nursery stock and was field grown for a time. I could tell because the roots were rough cut to fit the plastic pot when I acquired it.
Nice video. Looking forward to trying the 4 way tie in technique. 😎👍🪴🌲
I went on the weekend to the Australian Native Bonsai show and was excellent.. thanks for a great show again
Great show, learned a lot.. thanks again
This video is helped me understand the process.. thankyou so much
Thanks for a great informative video
Perfect timing for this video
Great podcast! Thank you!
Best part of my week, keep them coming thankyou
I get so much out of these podcasts!! Great advice again Scott.
Great podcasts! Keep it up mate greetings from Holland!
Wish l heard this info a year ago when l started, great tips and info. Thanks
What’s with all the needles hanging below the pads on what appear to be spider webs?
@@blueridgebonsai9155 spiders are in all bonsai and become an issue when they get too dense and a reason to pluck old needles.
@@BonsaiMatsuOK, how about some more videos on BAC? There is a total dearth of info on using them for bonsai and given that this is your third most popular video there are a lot of potential viewers who are interested. You could cover basic info like soil mixes, watering, styling, wiring, repotting, and the ever present question of just how to handle their roots. I have a large nursery grown one in development and I have only been able to find a couple of videos that touch on some of these topics.
Stunning tree 🎄 , I've got two in pond baskets from small seedlings, got some shape in them but going to get them in the ground next spring .
Exciting dig! Thanks again
Have you heard of Tom Vuong upside-down olives, he digs the roots out aswell, then cuts the lignatuber in half score 45° the wound, plants the roots upside down and gets 2 tree's from one. It is eluded to at about the 45 minute mark of this video ruclips.net/video/AEl0Z7EMUi4/видео.htmlsi=60-QdzWpIf_Nq93A.
Ahh, my Monday morning chill time. ☕️ 💕
Great specimen. I gathered a few slightly smaller ones near a pine plantation up near Mansfield, Victoria. They have been chewed in by deer which has added to their stunted gnarly look. They all survived their transplant well. There is one there that would be thicker but shorter and more bent than your specimen. I cut half the roots this year and will go back and get it next spring2025. It will be an amazing soecimen that i suspect will be a life long project .
Sounds like it’s going to be a special tree!
I have been busy repotting; I have been listening to your podcasts as I have been working. well, I was trying to remove a useless root (listening to one about making decisions,) should have used a sharper tool. (that too was another podcast I have listen to lately about sharpening) Jammed the finger it is still hurting 3 hours later. as soon as I did it was only yesterday, I listen to pain and injuries and laughed at some of the things you mention
@@maryoverton7245 I’m so sorry for you Mary but you made me laugh!!!!
Hi Scott whats the proper name of your work table jack and where can i purchase one? Thank you
@@karlneilguinayen it’s an hydraulic motorbike lifter and you might have to search around for one.

Thanks for another great episode, can wait to start pruning 😄
Love the podcast! Which bits are you using with your die grinder? I was looking at the "terrier" bits from the UK. Not cheap but kick back with those bits seems to be minimal. Cheers.
Yeah you definitely pay for better quality bits. I use the Bonsai Nibbler bits from the UK.
Great stuff as always. Thank you for the great information.
Informative video thankyou
Just wanted to say big fan love the podcast listen to it daily and often back to the start for all the sage advice you give us..I know you don’t post many videos but its always a nice bonus when you do..( came to see the 4 way tie in)..keep it going as we need you in the bonsai world..lots of bonsai love from the UK (also how do you get your sphagnum moss that fine?, in a blender?, I spend ages chopping it up with scissors or a knife! 😅
@@pauljarvis7386 thank you very much!! The sphagnum is rubbed through a sieve, gets it nice and fine and much easier than chopping it up.
😍👍
Great information, thanks again
If I remember correctly. Needle plucking is only done when you have the final basic branch structure you want? Not counting the outer, younger small branches at the end of each branch.
Needle plucking is also done to balance the strength of your pine. So the strong areas don't continue to get stronger at the expense of the weaker areas of the tree. So it is used for design but more importantly to help balance the allocation of resources in your pine bonsai.
I absolutely love these podcasts and get so much out of it.. l sometimes don't have time to watch a screen so listening in is perfect. Thx again
I really need to get better at wiring trees in. I keep snapping the wire when tightening it though.
Oh man, also had my first rotted roots repot this year. Thankfully not a tree I had previously repotted, but one that had come in to the collection this year. It was not the best smell, and made me move to finish repotting outside quite quickly!
@@sanitychelle you may be over tightening the wire or not have you pliers on the correct angle. Or the wire may be too thin.
Good morning Scott love your contribution to Bonsi in general. From your videos to your Podcasts thank you for that One question your bike Stand how high does it go? And what brand is it I’m interested in getting one
Hi, have you ever used Zeolite in your soil mix? It has a high CEC value but doesn't break down like Akadama.
Must say l like watching raking and trimming a try as l find it therapeutic.. looks terrific... thanks
Thanks Scott. Really enjoy your videos. Sensational tree.
Thanks 👍
Also nice to see I'm not the only one with an old toothbrush in the bonsai toolbox!
They never go to waste around here...
We are in the opposite season as you here in the US. But really enjoyed this video and seeing some of your repotting work. Thanks for sharing! - Choten-en Bonsai
Great tree, clear video, and that's a really lovely blue pot!
What state are you in mate? Looks like some fresh root tips. Tree starting to wake up already?? Thanks for sharing.
I'm in Melbourne, Victoria and plenty of the trees I've been repotting have new roots as well as bud swell, some have popped already too.
What a wonderful tree Scott, Great video, thoroughly enjoyed it !
Great video thanks. So you don’t use any Akadama in your mix at all.
Nope. I find it can breakdown really easily and clog up the mix.
Another great video, thank you! I have a massive European Hornbeam, it's a very old tree with a massive nabari, it's probably a bit too heavy for me at my age, but I couldn't resist not buying it :-)
Always hard to go past one like that!
Great transformation, I think that you should reduce that large jin, just by opinion. Have a very similar procumbens in a large grow box for past 5 years and will be looking to start styling this year. Thanks for the inspiration! And I have to add that that’s an extremely healthy looking plant. Well done!
Wow, beautiful tree. You took off a lot more of the rootball than I expected! Thank you, Scott!
Awesome episode! Question for you. When talking about soil, would you use the same mix for a tree that’s in development or change it to something that’s more organic and not so porous? I feel like the soil mix you mentioned would be better for a tree that’s already developed and in its refinement stage. I’m trying to focus on growth, longer roots, root thickening and trunk thickening.
@@coreypetersen7630 this mix for me is for all of my trees in their various stages of development. It promotes really strong root growth which then give you foliage growth. It’s how you prune or don’t prune the foliage that you can use to your advantage when developing your bonsai.
@@BonsaiMatsu thank you for replying back to me. I will be definitely changing my soil mix come next repotting season here in the United States. I’m very new to all this and trying to get as much info as I can. Thank you again and I love the podcast.
@@coreypetersen7630 thank you 🙏🏻
Hey Scott. I was the one who asked about the White Pine that was used as the demonstration. My aim was to understand the history of the tree as that information is very attractive to me. I agree with the translator on age but that was just 1 part of my question. I did get the history from the original owner and it made that tree so much more attractive to me. Thanks for your podcast!
@@longhuynh1815 thanks for getting in touch and that’s great to get your perspective. I found it interesting the approach of etiquette when it came to age as I’d never heard it before. Can understand why the history makes it more attractive to you too.
I went out and repotted a maple while listening in, thanks again
Great stuff as always. Really wanting to get in to repotting, but the mornings are so frosty, the trees are coming out like ice blocks. I've been trying to line up the next few against the side of the house over night to help them.
@@sanitychelle I bring mine into the workshop the day before to help dry them out
Loved this, thanks
