  • To celebrate Black History Month, The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza is pleased to continue our series of one-on-one conversations with 1960s civil rights activists. This final installment features Dr. Raphael Cassimere Jr. Professor emeritus of history and the first African American instructor hired at the University of New Orleans, Cassimere served as president of the New Orleans NAACP Youth Council from 1960 to 1966. During that time, he led voter registration drives as well as a successful two-year boycott of thirty-five local businesses. This interview was recorded via Zoom on May 14, 2021. This interview may contain harsh language and descriptions of violence and may experience occasional technical difficulties.
All interviews featured in the “Voices from the Civil Rights Movement” series are part of the ongoing Oral History Project at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza. More than 2,000 interviews have been recorded to date, exploring the history and culture of the 1960s as well as the life, death and legacy of President John F. Kennedy. If you are interested in researching or participating in the Oral History Project, please contact oralhistory@jfk.org. Smashing bloke to listen to, respect from a Scotsman. How difficult a life you & black people went through, for me growing up in Scotland & looking back at our turbulent history & will to protect Scotland, I could never conceive in my life going through what you & black people went through sir. You are a rock & you are loved.
