    I bought this around 1983 on Not VHS, but BetaMax from Zed Records in Long Beach CA for $34.99. And I didn't even own a BetaMax player! But my mom and dad were in the market for VHS player at the time and I was the goto son for helping my parents buy such electronic gizmos in 1983. So as a means of getting the BetaMax transferred to VHS so that I could watch this footage, I made a deal with the salesperson at the electronics store. And that was that he transfer my BetaMax to VHS. If so, he had a sale. And it worked! He made a duplicate of my BetaMax (a tape that has only been played that one time) to a VHS tape (watched more than once) and he sold a VHS player to my mom and dad. That is my story :-)

    Hya, thanks for uploading. The concert footage was shot on video, I was on camera, no audio input from the desk, just the microphone in the camera. We'd gone to make a reference tape for Buzzcocks and offered the Joy Division footage to Tony Wilson for half the cost of the video hire, about £30. IKON then made this, which sold loads, we got nowt apart from a VHS from Rob Gretton later. Not that I minded too much, it was a great night.

      Hya, I don't know the site and don't really want to draw attention to myself. That's basically the story, a few tales about the scene in general, I first saw them at The Russell Club when they were Warsaw, bought the Factory EP, I was 30 years old working in print, video and film living in Hulme doing the odd video for bands and got involved with New Hormones and The Beach Club. I was impressed by their energy and the reaction of the crowd, there was the sense that they'd do well, doom laden energy. It's all been well documented. Do you come back to England at all? If so, I'm generally found at The Hillary Step on Upper Chorlton Rd on Sunday nights where I book the bands in. Al the best, Bob

  • @killerbunyip
    @killerbunyip 8 лет назад +68

    Brilliant. Thank God this was recorded. Buy Bob Jones a pint. When you hear the raw live footage, you begin to understand Peter Hook's initial frustration when he heard Hannett's mixes for Unknown Pleasures and Closer. They were, as he said, a quite heavy and aggressive sounding band on stage, but in the studio the guitar and bass were mixed down to highlight Morris's drumming, and the whole sound made very clinical. He says over the years he realised Hannett was right and he made the trademark Joy Division sound which is now timeless... but at the time he utterly hated it.

      Byrne glancing furtively, and uneasily, back over his shoulder. "He's closing fast! Wait...where'd he go?" auto-ponders the greatest weirdo-genius body movement practitioner, he who's uncontested in the What? Why? How? But Thanks! subcategory. Mr. Curtis is no longer in the rear-view mirror. He's drawn even. He is moving like a Tremendous Machine!

      On a more serious note, nobody can touch either of them. And Ian's willingness to go there...which must have been terrifying, given his epilepsy...is pretty damn brave. I think the world of him.

    I googled live performances solely to see what the historians were talking about Ian’s gesticulations having never heard a live recording by JD and loving them for many years (all studio tracks.)
    WoW their genius cant even be grasped without hearing and seeing a live performance. I have such a better understanding and appreciation. Love them even more.

    Bought the FACT VHS tape in 2005, at age 21. Remember how wonderful it felt playing the tape on my Toshiba VHS, seeing Joy Division perform live, even if the resolution was abysmal. Estranged parents probably threw it out when they re-decorated the house and threw away all my stuff. This was one of the few things I left behind and always longed for. Glad I can find it on RUclips. Thanks for uploading this. Really means a lot.

    Right, everyone knows why the sound and picture is crap, so surely in this time of enhancing things digitally, the sound can be enhanced to nearly that of the sound board and the picture improved to maybe not HD, but something not far off. If the equipment is there, can it be done? This film is the best documentation of the best front man ever in popular music leading one of the greatest bands ever. It's time to update this artifact, so that future generations can enjoy and be mesmerised by the genuine originality that was Ian Curtis.
