I PRESENTED THEM ON THIS PROGRAMME, MY NAME IS LEILA WARING. BUT LOVED JOY DIVISION TOO. IAN CURTIS WAS A WARM, FRIENDLY AND APPROACHABLE LAD, WISH I COULD HAVE SAID THE SAME ABOUT PAUL WELLER. HE SULKED AND TUTTED, WHILST I FUMBLED MY WAY THROUGH 10 RE-TAKES, INTRODUCING THEM. PRICELESS ! THANKS, LEILA
Leila Waring sorry to hear mr weller was a bit off with you Leila, hopefully it was just his nerves that got the better of him. seen him a few times over the years and cant fault the guy, to me he cool as fuck. i was a mod back in the late 70s and early 80s and had the most amazing time running around glasgow in my px with my mates.sadly we parted company in 82 as we started to grow up and settle down but about seven years ago we had a reunion night and to this day we still meet up about once a month to chew the fat and attend mod nights in glasgow and have have also been to brighton a few times. oh and a bought another px. KTF
+Leila Waring omg , wow etc, so jealous, what a thing to be able to tell your kids
+Leila Waring hey done good Leila
such a cutie
Thanks to you all for your lovely supportive comments x
Hi, i am the presenter of this show and it was frighteningly fantastic. First time ever on TV (probably the last ! ) but was scared to death, enjoyed every minute and upset Paul Weller cos I had to do 10 re-takes on intro. Loved meeting all the lads in Joy Division, what lovely lads they were and we had John Cooper Clarke on who made us all feel special too !! A lifetime experience which no one can take away from me - Leila
Good job Leila! At least the edit we see :-)
Hi Leyla. How did you get the presenting job on this show. The JD clip has become legendary now of course and it must be amazing to have been a part of it. I always wondered if the bands chatted? And if Paul Weller and Co spent any time with JD? What did you go on to do?
Always appreciated Joy Division's "business casual" aesthetic.
I think it was more geared towards a 1940's depressing look..
They were mods.
@@C-mereSSBU no they weren't
It's great to see this site's alive and kicking,
I was the presenter and it was so full-filling,
Yes i was nervous, and in awe of the show,,
And I know I annoyed Paul Weller and Co,
With 10 or so intros, time was of the essence,
So sad, Joy Division's Ian's,no longer in presence,
John Cooper Clarke was showcased too,
A famous poet, from Manchester, my inspirational you!
Not forgetting Tony Wilson, you could object to, or love,
You made Manchester so famous, thanks for placing us above x
You ARE the Mancunian accent!!!
it great to see this again
Stephen Morris is an amazing drummer
He’s like a metronome
At the end she said "We hope we've managed to give you something else" Little did she know just how much it was something very special and in the case of Joy Division hardly ever seen. An amazing and historic performance of a great song.
She didnt have a clue,I agree...............
The Jam were just unstoppable by this point. Tube Station - Start was the best run of singles of all time, bar none.
I would say When you're Young through to Beat Surrender ....
Stephen Morris tearing it up without breaking a sweat. A performance of concentration.
Amanda Laggan didn't notice until you pointed it out.
God, Ian's painfully handsome. Thanks for this amazing footage.
“For people between 16 and 20”- I was bang in the middle at eighteen when this was aired. I was a Young punk at the time. Now I’m an old man.👀
I loved rhe Jam, but .. Joy Division just gets better and better.
from caewern?
I remember strapping the microphone of my tape recorder to the TV when this was on :-) One of the best half hours of telly I ever watched. Both bands did another song too - The Jam 'When You're Young' and JD 'She's Lost Control'. Shame there's so much negative sniping in the comments here as both bands were sensational . We should just be happy that so much amazing music came out of the UK in the late 70s.
Hi Federico, yes it was and it was fantastic, met the group too, and what a lovely genuine experience it was, a truly memorable day, such a lovely group - very professional and friendly guys. My partner who passed away at Christmas due to cancer, absolutely loved them in their prime and was very proud and in awe of the fact i had actually done a show alongside them, my beautiful man Martin lives on forever in my heart! Thanks for your time, Leila
lucky people in the audience.....
Ja!
Strange, nobody says "I was there!"
THIS IS THE ONLY SONG I DANCED TO AT MY SCHOOL DANCE..... NO-ONE ESLE WANTED TO DANCE TO IT ( or couldn't) THANKS PAUL FOR PUTTING ME ON THE GOOD FOOT 👍☮️🇬🇧
1979-1983 was the real deal in 'popular' music.
I'd push it back and forward from 77-84 basically the same thing but totally agree, a brilliant time in music.
I was a terrific time in music …
1979 was an amazing year for music. That whole period from 78-82 was unbelievable. That said, there is loads of great music today if you know where to look. Thank goodness I live in Australia. We have a commercial free radio station which plays alternative music (Triple J) and a sister station (Double J) on the internet which plays alternative music from the past 40 years. Commerical music sucks and has done since 1984.
I'm the biggest Jam fan, but Joy Division killed it.
No!
of course they did - absolutely essntial
Ryan Milne
Joy is a killer band!
Appreciate your honesty! you are right of course.
Two of the greatest bands of all time at the heights of their powers on the very same show and 115 nitwits disliked this video? WTF?
"For people 16 to 20?" Heck, I'm 51 and I'm digging this. I would have loved to have been a teenager in England during this time period.
such a mature song in such an innocent age
tbh, back then I was huge Jam fan and didn't get Joy Division. Looking back and especially comparing both bands to what we mostly have now, they were outstanding!
spoilt for choice in them days mate
+karl clarke You're not kidding! Who'd have thought then that we'd go backwards to mediocrity
What a cool English you girls/ guys! THEY WERE OUTSTANDING!
You know your old when you ask your kids "Whats that crap your listening to"??like my parents did when i had "The Jam" blaring out at full volume or listening to "The Clash, The Skids,Secret Affair,The Specials, etc etc. ..Those were the days!!!!
Two brilliant bands on one show? I never thought I'd say this, but now I wish I'd been alive in the 70s!
Leila, you were very cute and sincere. What great memories you must have. It's great to hear from you!
This is as close as heaven as can be: two of my favourite bands together. So close, and yet so far away...
Love this video. While most Americans were mired in disco, some of us could hear the UK calling. Thanks for posting.
Most Americans were not mired in disco. By 1979, disco had already become a running joke among most music listeners in the US. There was Talking Heads, Blondie, The Ramones, Bob Seger, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Cheap Trick, The Cars, Foreigner and Boston, just to name a very few... and all of them were far removed from disco.
news4usunshine You forgot Television. IMO the greatest band to come out of the NYC scene in the late 70s.
And let's not forget that Punk actually started in New York.
EarendilUndomiel Maybe! But REAL PUNK Started in Good Olde Blighty!
djharg /Haggis 88... Are you saying the Ramones weren't "real punk"? Bullshit.
The Jam was past and present but JD exposed the future! Soon thousands of bands looked and sounded like Division.
What a committed vocal preformance by Mr Curtis.
Spine tingling when Hooky starts...
Masterpieces. Both.
Hey Leila waring i remember you doing this show it was fantastic im 50 now that was my time every thing now is crap the kids today miss out on good music you were lucky to do this great times.
Thanks, my partner died at Christmas, of Cancer, i am trying to get back into thee world of the living, but i know i will get there, Thanks again, Leila x
RIP Ian Curtis
15 July 1956 - 18 May 1980
yeah one of the best mate
Huh... 15 July, my eldest daughter's birthday.
R.I.P. Ian Curtis
Nice to see Ian again.
Now I know Joy Division is not everyone’s cup of tea but you cannot deny that Ian gave everything on stage. Just look at him, so venerable up there, no image at all.
fredintheshed1 yes he did Fred. RIP the poor alcoholic epileptic....double whammy to deal with- fame and fortune probably killed him as well
I don't wanna have tea with anyone who thinks Joy Division isn't their cup
Venerable, vulnerable, ... whatever. Nevermind.
A regular venerable Bede, he seems.
Joy Division should be played to babies while in the womb
Now that's a double whammy: The Jam & Joy Division just a joy say I!
Explosive performance by The Jam at or very near their all-time peak? Yeah, I will have some of that, please. No surprise Paul was sulky, he was a very intense young man. That's ok, his art more than made up for the attitude.
Of course Joy Division is brilliant too, absolutely brilliant.
Only Ian Curtis could make pleated pants look cool.
+falkyfalkenstein have you ever seen Bowie...?
I did......................
Leila,
You were cute back then and I wouldn't be surprised if you still are. Thanks for putting this up. I'm a 27 year old Mod in Los Angeles and my GF adores Joy Division. Me, not so much but The Jam are my fave rock n' roll band of all time!!! Hands down.
Cheers!
Thanks for flashback. Loved The Jam, but loved Joy Division more. No one can close music wise.
Also like Tuxedo Moon, Legendary Pink Dots, The Residents and anything Progressive. 60s, 70s,an some 80s had kickass music. Hard to find anymore music like that anymore.
I think Stephen Morris AND Rick Buckler were two very underrated and talented drummers. Don't you miss real music?
I think most people recognize Stephen Morris as an accomplished drummer
Erm - Rick wasn't messing around with his sticks... props to BOTH.
There is still some real music mate! You've just got to look a little harder lmao
Not really. What is the difference between an average drummer and a drummer extraordinaire?
I dont think Morris has ever been under rated. Very well recognised as an accomplished drummer
It's funny though, Peter Hook gave a bit of a dis to Weller, saying that the Jam were their opening band on the show!😀
good quality audio,tnx....i can imagine weller playing up to his inner townsend and ian just grateful to be there.
A kids prog for 16-20 year olds! Some of the best bands ever…43 years ago! Brilliant. Will never happen again. 🙁
And Tony Wilson! ❤️
I remember seeing this on TV, there wasn`t even video, excellent upload.
All I can think of when I see that intro is... "Nozin' Around! It's a program for young adults, made by young adults, and concentratin' on all the subjects that young adults are into!"
I'm old enough to die for my country, but I can't drink beer in pubs.
Watching Young Ones in the US made me wonder what show they were sending up...
It's good if you got half the references, being in the US, mate. I watched it when I was about 11 and still loved it. Watched it again recently after actually knowing all the events it was satirising in the 80s. Brilliant show.
Or have sexual partners of your own choice. But could not drink in pubs. Truly, we weren't the Young Ones very long (not bloody long enough matey). R.I.P P-Rick.
flared trousers!
RIP Tony Wilson, Manchester`s favourate son
My dad likes and suggested both of these bands to me and I now really love Joy Division and like The Jam too
Bruce Foxton with his Bay City Roller Haircut what a 1974 4th division Football Club Mullet Haircut
+igor stein Then Stiff Little Fingers! Powerhouse!
One of the great wonders of the world really. Weller with his super-barnet, always spot on, and Foxton with the aforementioned div 4 mullet special. Who knows how it continued but it did!
Great bass player, unfortunate hairstyle, all hes missing is a three star jumper, cheesecloth shirt ,six button baggies and treble wedges .
I had that haircut in 1986-91. Yeah. It looked good too.
I love Ian's look at 7.49. A look of yeah I'm a genius, this songs genius, this is the most revoulutionary music of it's time but you know what I could do this shit in my sleep. So nonchalant.
love Joy Division but hadn't really heard much of the Jam, except Going Underground, which I luv, but this, Eton Rifles, my God, it was a revelation, thanks for posting this!!1!!1
@AvaAdore83 Hey i was the presenter, and they left, and he did, a lasting impression on me and the others in the programme, what a guy and what a group, we were nothing, and he and they made us all feel like the best thing on earth ! A true legend ! A beautiful person!
late 70's early 80's seedy times when people were real
stephen morris is the beast!
One of the best drummers in rock history, no doubt.
How cute is her smile after she introduces The Jam? Thats so adorable.
Sorry to hear of your loss Leila. I have fond memories of you and the bands on Something Else. Happy days indeed. Wishing you all the very best.
Jason xxx
Bloody crikey, the Jam were TIGHT, weren't they?
I'll preface this by saying I like Paul Weller and The Jam. But holy cow, Joy Division on the same show on the same night was probably a little too much for The Jam. They probably had to crank up their sound several notches up. Joy Division, whose sound was nothing like what everybody else was already doing at that time -- dark, gothic, post-punk, poetic -- just couldn't be matched. They followed no one; they structured their songs the unconventional way rarely having choruses; they experimented with instruments and technology; they were beyond all and influenced many.
Joy Division sooo ahead of their time!! Amazing ❤️
Jeremy Jo nuff said man .....rock on IAN ....much missed ...imagine the stuff he would have done music wud ave changed forever if this guy lived
+Jeremy Jo "Well I could call out when the going gets tough. The things that we've learnt are no longer enough. No language, just sound, that's all we need know, To synchronise love to the beat of the show." Agreed!
+Jeremy Jo Sounded like a pretty standard take for the Jam back then- no need to crank it up, they were a spark just waiting to burst into flame in the late 70s.
Thankyou for going into more detail when most people seem to say shit like "they're depressing, they must be good". I've still got to say i prefer the jam though. JD were pretty lifeless save for ian and stephen. Their sound was good, probably down to their 5th member more than anyone else though.
J'adore les pernelles de l'illustrissime batteur JD/NO qui tournent dans tous les sens, comme à chaque fois
my big bro introduced me to the jam via this show.....top top stuff that made evenings bearable in the wasteland (geddit) that was late 70's Middlesbrough.
Damn, that girl introducing The Jam at the beginning couldn't have been much cuter.
Her name is Leila Waring, beautiful mancunian girl.
kuru308 Go fuck yourself, you pathetic assclown.
Transmission is still fucking disturbing all these years later.
+Bill Smith yep you got it spot on there. it gets me too.
When people talk about great lyrics within a song (not the entire song lyric, just a few lines) does it get ANY better the 'Touching from a distance, further all the time'. That's heartbreaking man, shattering. There was music B.I.C and then music A.I.C. Why does genius have to be so painful for some of those gifted like he was, so sad. Still my favourite ever Band.
Its fucking amazing to be able to see stuff like this. Before now you only got to see this if you happened to be 16-20 and living in Manchester in 1979. Im not THAT old, and even I grew up listening to bands that I never even saw a picture of.
Thanks so much for posting. Remember this when it was first shown being an avid Jam fan. When was it? 1979? Shit I was 15 ., now coming up for 50 where did the time go. 2 excellent bands here. Feel bad for the kids of today looking forward to pop idol and Bieber bollocks
She's charismatic ain't she?
Weller was giving her arse a damn good look at the start.
I've read an account by the girl presenting The Jam ... she said she kept flubbing the intro and it took multiple takes and Paul Weller was getting a little cranky.
Haha ... you can see that intro isn't seamless (there is an editing splice) and you can see Paul looking a little disgruntled waiting for her to get the intro right so they can play.
haha reminds me of 'Buehler...Buehler...' lol
Kay ROFL 😂
She is as beautiful as she is charismatic!
From Manchester, it's "something gelse."
Hi, nothing wrong much with the programme, it was a BBC programme made by and presented by teenagers, we had no one in the audience, just us, so lucky!. However, i can say, i was, and remain very proud to be part of this exciting and invigorating time in this era, considering around 10 other 'Something Else' episodes produced in England and Ireland were made, and yet, ours is the only one which features to the forefront. Yes, Weller and Curtis' bands were totally inspirational! I was there!
thanks for sharing
Joy division smoking the jam......paul weller realised joy division were indeed beyond any other band on the planet
Joy Division - what a band.
Dennis Foley I often wonder just how the tale would have penned out had he lived.....the next single ceremony was a stonker......who knows
The crowd dont know how to act or respond. You dont think the jam got smoked?? Weller did
Id read more then sir. After this performance weller said he knew joy division were the greatest band on the planet. There was no competition. They happened to be on the same bill. I think if asked most people who understand music they would say the same. Obviously its no competition. Weller and i just happen to belive the jam """"got smoked""" theres room for joy division and the jam. I love both bands. I like Joy Division more than some poor small faces/who tribute act.
tree.house morrissey loves the jam. He wears cheap fred perry t shirts and has a lego hairdo and rides round on mopeds.....inbetween listening to cila black records........he has no credibility when it comes to liking music. I agree with paul weller.....joy division were a much more important band than the jam. There is nothing original about the jam. Influences are one thing but ripping other bands off is a no no.
I wonder if Weller ever asked Foxton to go get his hair sorted out. That mullet is tragic.
I thought the same, even back in the day, classic, you made me laugh :)
Weller with what came to be known as the "Rodders" do
If he did I reckon that Foxton still told him to p*** off.
lol - In the 70s mullets were pretty rad. Bowie had a good one too!
Oh my god you know the names of all the singers that's so cool. You know so much about music! That's so cool. How cool!!
Beautiful. thanks
Saw the jam many times live but always regretted not seeing joy division even though I've seen new order many times, would have loved to have been in the audience, two of the best british bands ever, fucking class no other words for it.
allmodcons1965 Did you have the chance to see JD?
i would be shitty too if i had to put up with 10 retakes
Leila, you seemed like a sweet and genuine host through your introduction of The Jam.
I'm sorry that you had to go through some b.s. with Paul Weller.
I met him once as a fan out side of WXRT-Chicago where he wrapped up his interview. He was okay with me but he ran roughshod over Frank E. Lee, the interviewer, who was trying to be professional about it but even he got exasperated at the end.
All that aside, I think The Jam was better than Joy Division all around based on the two performances there.
Joy Division were something else...
great music. thank you.
I wish I was born at this time! This is what you call music!!!:D and of course R.I.P. Ian Curtis, I'm still and always have been a massive fan of Joy Division and New Order! But I couldn't not get a little upset, as well I to have MS and Epilepsy and I've just recently had oh maybe the worst seizure out I've ever had? Was In the hospital, just to make everyone laugh and why not!! Lol the first thing I said to my mum and my dad was "but I'm still 14 though?????!!!!!!!" I'm 25? Haha!! you're as young as you feel!!!!!!:D
someone actually thinks Joy Division smokes The Jam?!? That's laughable...The Jam kick ass...
Greg Goodwill I should start listening to them. I had a coworker that was a middle-aged lady from Manchester. We would talk about these bands all the time, and the Jam was the first band she saw live. I never even took the time to check it out, but I like the music here. Vocal delivery is shite.
It's like two kickass bands for the lucky audience
Can I love both of them ? Great bands. I use to hear only The Jam back then when I was fourteen not JD.
JD I have been listening now two years straight.
Brilliant! Thank You So Much!!!
What a fantastic mix.
Thanks for the upload. Just great.
Two great moments. Hanx a lot. Saw Joy Division at the Plan K, Brussels ..less than one year after : NME dark front page "Ian Curtiss is dead". R.I.P Ian Curtiss. The Jam : simply the best British band at the time.
Great clip of two great bands
Great upload cheers
That is such a lovely and kind thing to say, Thank you, xxx
I remember watching this when it was first broadcast.
Awesome! Thanks!
Amazing. 2 of my favourite bands!
@rolandmg1 Thanks, it was the best ever experience! We filmed them on separate days, as we knew things were a little sensitive - both great bands and all true legends! I am fifty years old now, still the same size in every way (thank god). Nothing can take away the memories of that day, and i guess i appreciate them more now, than i did then! Funny old life isn't it? Thanks again and take care, Leila
How cool are joy division! Wow!
RIP Chris Neelon, thanks for turning me on to this, showing me the snowy videotapes, the mental stories Manc ( all true, who couldve known) too young to die, too messed up to live
Rock history . I remember watching this episode . Absolutely did not get Joy Division ... but it's music history ... and I remember an amazing interview with a police officer in which the young interviewrs first question was something like
Why do you pick on young black people ?
Amazing days in 79
Thanks Jason, that is such a thoughtful message, you take care, Leila
The Jam, Cup o Tea. Division, grab your board and SHRED.
Great post ManuG.
Yes! Thanks, Leila
omg!!! The Jam.sooooooooooooo GOOD
Remember seeing this when first on and it was absolutely brilliant. Blew me away!
Audience need to step it up. I would give my last day on earth to see Joy Division live. Long live Ian Curtis.
Hi Jordan, that's what i call a 'real man', hasn't let his fame go to his head. Wish i was there to see him.
What a great guy, Thanks, Leila
Amazing!
What a dynamic presenter!
