Marcus Aurelius talk with him self about death and facing his on mortality when he know his son Commodus and the Roman empire isn't ready for his passing into the afterlife. Deep deep.
I agree. Besides, I found very ingenious the way the conspirators carry on the regicide, through an unsuspected blind man who gives the emperor poisoned fruit carved with a poisoned blade... An amazing idea, and a perfect murder!
The character that Mel Ferrer played - that of the blind freedman Cleander was a real person at this time. But,he was never involved in any assassination of Marcus Aurelius ( who died in 181 AD of natural causes,AFAIK).But it was good editing to put it in the plot. For all that Cleander was one evil SOB.He was ironically put to death on the orders of Emperor Septimius Severus for treason.
"If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine."
Alec Guiness as Marcus Aurelius? Jesus how do I only see this now? Wtf?
Guiness was such a great character actor.

Great scene, the best of the movie I think, that of the soliloqui, with the echo... And Guinness look like the real emperor, very much...
Not to mention, he was good at becoming the character he played!!!
Funny how Richard Harris was to play Commodus in this film. ONly to play
Marcus Aurelius in Gladiator.
that's Christopher Plummer not Harris
cripplehawk I hope juaqin Phoenix too
Glades Ponci is the real voice over.
such a beautiful scene and the texts come from marcus-aurelius book :Pensées.
According to what I've read over the past several years, Marcus Aurelius likely died of cancer.
Maybe the Plague from parthia was the culprit.
Yes, or a general breakdown because of bad health.
good god how he looked like Emperor Marcus Aurelius
Hidden gem

Obi Wan?
Commodus was played by Christopher Plummer, not Richard Harris.
Betcha that bombed
@partschmidt but he didn't really die that way
Alec Guiness a giant over the likes of Basil Rathbone, James Mason and Eric Portman.
