    A movie would be an huge disaster, without real story, real intersting characters, as often. A TV series would be much, much better.

      jerrymail this. They were able to do it with the Terror, and the Alienist. An episodic format for the Honorverse would be the best route, provided HBO didn’t HBO’ify it.

    Episodic TV series and animated either cgi or in an anime style would be the way to go.

    I'd watch an Honor of the Queen movie. It's a good, fairly self-contained, book. The way Weber pulled in the first book with the credits was a great touch.

    I've been reading David Weber's books since my Dad introduced me to "On Basilisk Station". From that point on I have been addicted to his books, and in particular the "Honorverse". My Dad did not live long enough to see the end of the Honor Harrington Series. But I do hope I live long enough to see a movie done, or maybe even a TV series. I just hope the series isn't pay per view, as I do not subscribe to internet, cable or satellite TV. I wonder if the "SyFy" channel might be able to do this, but of course, this is part of a pay as you watch type thing.

    I started the series two months ago (at the recommendation of Steve Gibson's "Security Now" podcast) and just finished book 11. This entire series is flat out the best story I've ever had the pleasure of reading. I cannot highly enough recommending to anyone who reads; read these books. David, thank you for sharing so much of their worlds with us.

      Thomas Wade don’t ignore the side series though. They’re just as good and important to future stories. On Weber’s site there’s a reading order. You don’t need to read them or read them first, they didn’t all even come out in order that way, but it adds depth. He has two more series that are must reads. The prince roger series (with John ringo) and the safe hold series which is with tor books instead of baen. Really everything he writes is great but those are my favourite series of his with this one.

    I feel I must say something that might get me shunned by all the Honor fans out there.
    I don't think the series lends itself to either big budget movies, or standard live action episodic television. I DO, however, feel that it would make an outstanding animated series.
    Art style would be a big part of it's impact, but I think all the details that Mr Weber has created and included into his books would aid immensely in helping to tell the tales and making them 'real' to the viewer.
    This is just my opinion,
    speaking Frankly

      CGI is so good and so cost effective these days that I think the biggest barrier to production is good writers and good actors. If HBO or Netflix picked this up it could be fucking amazing. • @artistcomplex

    as a new fan, i want to try animation. and to those who think that wouldnt work we live in interesting times :)
    i would start it with honor meeting Nimitz, not in a desperate situation, but venturing out to see which tree cat was nicking the celery in the greenhouse and in a moment only they share the audience is invited to see the bond being created. cut to years later and she jumps out the gav shoot for Fearless, to a less than enthusiastic McKeon and you have a intro. we dont need much to want to be at the deep end, but i feel the bond between Nimitz and Honor is the only thing that must be conveyed before chapter one.

    I like the idea of starting with the battle, but I wouldn't throw the audience into it. Course I'm not a movie producer, I might be getting the wrong image from this statement.
    I would start with the black screen, like the night sky, it's black, but stars start to pop out, one-by-one. And play a song...
    ruclips.net/video/PeVqgynorvA/видео.html
    Time it to the song.
    Q-ship comes charging in, filling up the right side, the first third passes too fast to catch the name. The screen "tries" to match speed as it passes, a nice long angled shot as the we "try" to see the whole ship, soaking in the weapon ports and damage. Reach the end as it chucks a handful of missiles in the direction of it's trail of debris.
    We "try" to follow the missiles. A response missile passes from the dark. Then counter-missiles take some out, some more missiles fly off-course. One keeps going.
    An explosion in the dark, a silhouette; cinematic moment, not correct canon.
    A ship comes charging in on the left side. We get to see it in full before the screen matches speed. Damage is clearly on another level.
    CL-56 Fearless
    Harkness yes, shoving a missile off of McBride.
    Santos picking herself up, red lights everywhere, slams the console. We eject with the fusion bottle and get to see its explosion maul the port side.
    We dive back in, the McKeon moment. I hesitate to remove this.
    We pass a few walls and decks, atmosphere tents litter a hallway. Enter med-bay, Montoya raises his hands as a flat-line sounds. I'll leave the rest of med-bay to the imagination.
    Then you can have the bridge scene as described. But I would hazard to say, the conclusion of the battle need not be depicted. The grav lance and torpedoes need to be understood, and there's no time here, and dreams don't care.
    Wake up for the song's second course. Bring the music down for the bedroom scene.
    Scene change before the music ends; even if it needs to be extended.
    “I thought we’d discussed replacing Beta Fourteen with Commander Antrim, Andy.”
    We look to see what she talking about, a spiked collar, no, wait...
    CA-286 Fearless
    While she and Andy babble behind us, we get ourselves a good look at the replacement ship.

    I think for HH a TV series in which you covered maybe two books per season. (give or take), but for a kick off, and side sets, following in the success of integration in the Marvel Movies and TV inter mixing, say side stories in Movie in between and during seasons. so a kick off of things with a set of movies of the Travis Long Trilogy, then start the TV series with the House of Steel story. Then when you get to Basilisk, things are a lot lot lot more settled, and the non reading audience can settle in with a known universe for the long haul.

    • @yeoman588
      @yeoman588 6 лет назад

      I always pictured a screen adaption emphasizing tension rather than rapid-fire action. Taking advantage of the tactical displays and holotanks to show icons for missiles and ships moving around, cut with views of the ships and missiles represented by the icons. And making it clear that the audience is seeing compressed time when we skip over five hours of maneuvering by seeing a montage of shift changes, CIC updates, plot changes, and the like. Maybe show a time display, in-scene or as an overlay, when you want to be specific.
      Potential scene: Tense music plays. Havenite presses "Fire" button. Cut to missile tubes launching. Cut to Manty officer shouting "Hostile missile launch!" and missile icons appearing on displays. Manty captain orders return fire. Cut to Manty missile tubes launching. Cut between tactical display showing missile traces, tense faces, and missiles in space, while hearing tracking updates indicating we're seeing five minutes trimmed down to one, while music builds in intensity. Cut to counter-missile batteries launching, then PDLCs tracking and firing. Music climaxes and ends a beat before we see dramatic slow-motion of missiles detonating. Fudge physics enough to make the lasers visible. Music comes back as we see bursts of energy from sidewall and wedge hits and explosions of fire and splintered armor from hull strikes. Cut to bridge and see shaking from transfer energy, hear damage reports.

      A challenge, yes, but doable. Start off with submarine battle style suspense (possibly less expensive in production as well…), and when it hopefully is successful enough to run long enough (and to justify higher budgets…), power up the action with the LAC carriers (which would also help keeping the battles „fresh“).

    I was really, REALLY excited about the movie. At the first two HonorCons (Greenville, Raleigh,) Evergreen was there to show concept art and talk about what they were doing. I remember a meeting room stuffed to, or beyond capacity with enraptured fans as Evergreen Studios walked us through the technology and concepts. If done correctly, Honor Harrington could be the next Orville or ST:xxx. Perhaps better than that since Star Trek franchises seem to be going down hill since DS9/Vger.

    • @guspaz
      @guspaz 6 лет назад +1

      I went to Evergreen's panel at the first HonorCon in Greenville, and while I was impressed with the concepts they showed us, I was still pretty skeptical about it actually happening... Back then they were still planning it as a film rather than a miniseries, and I just couldn't see that sort of big investment paying off. These days, though, we've got some good examples of similar projects, like The Expanse. The market has also shifted since 2013, back then streaming services weren't so big into the production side of things. House of Cards was sort of seen as the first big streaming success, and it was just doing its first season, so you could say that streaming series were in their infancy. Today, there are more series than ever being produced, so it seems like there's a better market for an Honor Harrington series to be produced than there was back then.

    • @yeoman588
      @yeoman588 6 лет назад

      I was at the Evergreen panels as well, and it was definitely exiting! My biggest complaint was how much their concept art differed from the books; like David says, they probably knew stuff he and I don't about making movies, but I was still a bit miffed at how much they were changing some things -- the spaceships and uniforms, in particular.

    • @guspaz
      @guspaz 6 лет назад

      To be honest, they didn't really have any choice. In a visual medium, (particularly relevant to gaming, but also to film) it's very important that things should be immediately recognizable as being distinct, preferably by their silhouette. You want the audience to be able to tell things apart instinctively. Ships in the honorverse all look largely identical due to the physics of the universe. That works perfectly fine in a book when you're saying which ships are whose, but it doesn't work at all in a film where the audience needs to be able to see them on the screen and immediately know whose are whose.

    • @yeoman588
      @yeoman588 6 лет назад +1

      I can see that, and get where they're coming from, but I'd still be less miffed if the changes weren't quite as extreme. I like to think audiences deserve at least _some_ credit when it comes to being able to recognize differences without having to completely distort the source material. And it wouldn't do to make the Havenite ships _too_ evil looking either, given the events of later books. The books describe enough differences that could be enhanced and exaggerated to aid recognition without changing things up drastically, in my opinion.

    • @HanSolomani
      @HanSolomani 6 лет назад

      The easiest way to deal with this would be to have each nation paint their ships a different color. This would be a call back to the Age of Sail when most nations painted the stripe along the gun decks a different color. The British used yellow ochre, the French used red, the US used white, I'm pretty sure somebody used a light blue, and so on.
