I've never understood the "sludge metal" label that gets put on Mastadon's music. Yeah the production on their early albums is super swampy and intentionally grainy, but the actual music and songwriting has far more in common with prog metal than anything else. They're kind of like Trivium and Dream Theater in the sense that while they do fit into a specific subgenre (in this case metalcore and prog metal), their sound and take on the genre is completely unique to them and them alone.

They have parts in their songs that sounds like sludge metal, for example the ending to pain with an anchor. The biggest problem is it’s as if he wants the band to stay stagnant in time from the way he talks, from what I said in another video of his. Mastodon says they want to move forward with their music and not be stuck in the box, yet you and some fans of them seem to want that? So in short, a reviewer that doesn’t go into an album with a fresh and open mind, is a reviewer I’m not likely to return to (if he had done that, then explained his gripes in comparison I’d understand, but here it just comes off half cocked). For somebody who supposedly loves sludge metal and all kinds of music, he sure doesn’t seem to understand anyones desire to change things up or allow himself to enjoy something different. All I can say is at least he’s consistent with my ranking having this one higher than The Hunter (and that album was pretty good), but this is lower than Once More Round The Sun? Not saying that’s an awful take, it is a bit strange though, but I’ll allow it.
    Strong 4 on this reviewer.

      >Mastodon says they want to move forward with their music and not be stuck in the box
Every album they've released since Crack the Sky has been more and more 'inside the box' than the last until Hushed and Grim; what are you smoking?
      >it’s as if he wants the band to stay stagnant in time
The shift from Crack the Sky to Emperor of Sand was absolutely not a progression. Change is not inherently good, and change for change's sake is not preferable to consistent greatness when the result of that change is shallow, uninnovative, and mediocre.
This is the *exact* same argument people use to defend Metallica's album St. Anger. Drastic change is called for when the present material is dated and low-quality; Crack the Sky was one of the most complete metal projects of all time, and the band's response was to never do anything as good again. That was a terrible call in hindsight.
This review is fair. Hushed and Grim is the best album Mastodon has released since their good albums back pre-2010, and their attempts at change have (until this point) left them feeling more and more generic as time goes on.

Crack the Skye wasn’t as special to me as Hushed and Grim, The Hunter, or even Emperor of Sand to me at least, CTS seemed very short winded having a little over 50 minutes of run time, a lot of open notes and dead air between tracks, and only a few things to say in it. No offense to Brann and his loss but there had to be a bit more. Seems like everyone at this point expects them to scream their ass off on every record. In my mind the melody makes the song and this album, just like emperor of sand, is crammed full of it. Their records are like fine wine. They only get better with age. And anyone that only sat down through one playthrough, please for the love of God, keep listening. It always takes time hear everything that's to offer on the record. The 3 vocal attack sends the record over the top.

Selected Ambient Works and Music Has the Right to Children. I think something extra special when you take a masterpiece and make it longer, as long as the songs are worth it. This album has more of what hooked me in to love Mastodon than their past 4 records, but buckling under its own weight is accurate to me. They manage to build up such a grim and spooky vibe with a deep flavour of the oceanic heaviness from their first trilogy of albums, but I feel they do spoil it getting a bit too soft and boring for too many long passages that don't build anywhere as the album develops.

The album isn't perfect, there's things I don't like in it, I think Mastodon could have made a more technically deep and interesting album BUT this album approaches its theme almost perfectly, the fact it's a long, almost neverending, mix or regret, sadness, frustration and anger really invoke how mourning can feel -> you feel blocked, unable to move forward while inside you're going through a lot of different postures and emotions. The last song of the album is P E R F E CT, it really feels like dawn, the light is slowly coming back, soothing the pain while you accept that you lost something you'll never have again and yet understand there's more to live, your trip doesn't end there.
    I give it 8/10

Lots of critique on the technical/recording aspects, which are certainly valid. But, it's simple why this is their best effort since CtS (and maybe even as good as Leviathan): this record start to finish is soaked to the bone in emotion, heart, soulfulness. To me, those are the qualities that make CtS & Leviathan stand out so much and seemed absent in EoS, Hunter, and OMATS. They should have cut Dagger or Had it All. Apart from that, amazing album, 8.5/10.

Another melon metal review, another miss.
This is easily their most ambitious and probably best album since Crack the Skye, and at least a 7.8/10. Bare minimum.

Still think a harsh vocal counterpoint would enhance these compositions

REVIEW SUGGESTION: Moron Police - A Boat on the Sea (You will NOT be disappointed!) Band name is misleading ;) Potentially album of the decade - but don't take my word for it - just listen! Thanks - you're awesome!

Fantastic record. A lot better than their previous 3, and they are decent too. Mastodon's poorer albums are many bands masterpieces.

Well said, their 'worst' albums are more like their 'least good' albums.

This dude claims to be a music nerd? Emperor of sand was one of their best. Top 3 for me. Beast is fucking awesome. Don't let this guy's opinion deter anyone from checking that one out. Every song on this album, besides Dagger, kicks ass. The last 4 songs are the best ones on the whole album. It's up there with crack the Skye for me.

The chorus for teardrinker is epic, beautiful, and sorrowful all at the same time. You can't tell me any different.

think this is my fav of their albums. i have been listening to it nonstop since it released last year. ive been a mastodon fan since I first heard them in about 2005 when I was 13. think I have a weird palette though because everyone seems to talk about Once More Round the Sun as their best album and its by far my least fav. HaG > CtS > EoS > BM > Leviathan > Remission > The Hunter > OMRtS for me

I recently had a 6 hour joyride across South Dakota and listened to nearly nothing but this record. (Wall Drug, it's coming up!)
I did not like Emperor of Sand. So this was an incredible breath of fresh air. Best new Mastodon since possibly Crack the Skye, I would rank it in my top 3 of their records.
I feel like when bands become established someone whispers in their ear that they've got to cut the melodrama, self awareness, theatricality, and "overacting." At some point they stop arguing and just do what they're told until it becomes their own philosophy. I've seen so many bands start out with daring and apocalyptic earnestness and they always eventually settle on something markedly less exciting. I feel like that's happened to Mastodon, although this record is still very, very good in my opinion.
I wanted to point out this review does not mention that Kim Thayil of Soundgarden fame contributes to this record. Also, there is a viola, cello, French horn, violin, and sarangi on this record.

I don't think I've ever had so much anticipation for an album with such a massive let down. It's not even Mastodon anymore IMO. Allegedly their next album is going back to the heavy but I have my doubts
