It's also worth noting that the first 2 episodes of The Last Airbender were on the childish end of the spectrum, as (according to the show-runners) they weren't sure what they could get away with or how much support they'd get from the network. They got past this quickly of course, but I slept on that show for almost a decade precisely because those episodes sold the show as something it wound up not being.

Oliver & Company (My Aunt bought me the VHS because of my name xD), The Iron Giant, All Dogs go to Heaven... Those were films, however id watch em' religiously. They were NO WHERE dumb at all. The same with the TV animations like The Country Mouse and the City Mouse Adventures, Tin Tin, Little Bear's Adventures, the original Thundercats (even though now it is not THAT good), Mighty Thor (that pretty old one), fucking CyberChase which would teach you MATH of all the things which was simply amazing, and a lot more that dont come to mind the names right now. All of them beautifully animated, with humor, talking about family, new things to learn, meaningful adventures.... Even Saint Seiya, which is full of violence for a kid, id consume it like no other after school.

We're just entering a 2nd dark age for animation and children's programming. The last one lasted from the mid 1950s to late 1980s when cartoon quality began to hit the down low as studios like Hanna-Barbera and Filmation adopted a quantity over quality method and certain studios began to outsource to Asian animators to animate American cartoons, while some just licensed anime and rewrote certain aspects to suit an American audience. The upcoming dark is one the where everything is a reboot based on a preexisting intellectual property from a nostalgic period and make it a spoof examples: Teen Titans Go!, Ben 10 (2016), PowerPuff Girls (2016), and Thundercats Roar! Another contributing factor is the lack of diverse animation style as almost every cartoon has adopted the cal arts animation style. Also the popularity and abundance of Anime in the west can be considered a contributing factor. Feel free to add to this comment or correct me if I'm wrong. Also dannphan is really cute; had to.

Management takes a lot of the blame. Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes had two seasons taking from the comics and building up great "to be continued" storylines right up to the last episodes. Cancelled. Why? The Avengers movie was very popular and attracted a lot of kids. So Disney decided everything had to start from "Go" and feature characters as per the movie. The storylines became weak and the dialogue was so horribly bad! Disney didn't care because they knew they could sell merchandise (comic related rather than the TV animated series related). It is the fast buck and though piracy plays its part -far far more with comics-- but most execs have their idea that kids will buy more and anyone over a certain age is not in the right profile group. Money is the key -and, no, they DO NOT like to spend money so cash grab it is!

As much as I loved Adventure Time, Pendleton Ward poisoned the well at Cartoon Network, and here's how I think he did it. Pen was very adamant in his later seasons about letting his story board artists, who he was close friends with, write and direct their own episodes. These were mostly tumblr/social media artists, who's only experience were their personal social media output, and story board work for one or two shows. Him convincing the network to take that chance really opened the flood gates for the higher ups to start fishing for talent from the much broader waters of skilled but professionally untested social media artists. Shows made in the wake of Adventure Time seem to be chasing this really twee, high energy, and weirdly infantile aesthetic inherit to the artistic refugees of tumblr's porn purge, I imagine they are a lot cheaper to hire also. Teen Titans Go, Clarence, Gumball, Steven Universe, Regular Show. To me this was the era of shows with independent social media artist sensibilities.
You can see a parallel trend with Adult Swim programming as well, just replace Pendleton Ward with Tim and Eric. In the wake of those two huge talents who really shaped the directions of their network with their success, the void of originality they left behind is palpable. Cartoon Network became more childish. Adult Swim really lost that hard comedic edge they used to have in favor of the goofball, almost primordial awkwardness of the Tim & Eric era. The success of Adventure time at Cartoon Network and when Adult Swim cancelled Million Dollar Extreme, were the tragic pivotal swan songs of quality for the Network. Tha'ts how it seems to me anyway, there's a huge possibility I have no idea what I'm talking about. I agree with this video, where has the maturity gone?

Good video. The 2010s actually started off very strong with action cartoons and more mature looking shows, but for the reasons mentioned in the video they practically disappeared from the traditional animated TV networks for the rest of the decade. The Legend of Korra is basically one of the last animated shows that were aimed at a more mature audience on a traditional kids TV network like Nickelodeon, but we all know how badly Nick treated that show by making it online only streaming near the end of its run.
That said, I don't think that the release of more mature shows are slowing down anymore. My reason? Netflix. In the last few years Netflix has produced/released some very high quality animated programming that fill similar niches to shows of yesteryear and arguably even expanded beyond the restrictions of traditional cable TV. A show like Castlevania would have never been made on Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, or Cartoon Network. We also got a successful revival of Young Justice on Netflix and because of it being on Netflix it has been able to grow up with its original audience and go to places that even the original few seasons weren't allowed to show. There is a lot more freedom to explore and find more mature animated shows and films as well which are suitable for both kids and adults on Netflix. I.e. Klaus and Green Eggs and Ham, which both are excellent.
A big problem with shows like Thundercats 2011 is that they came out years too early in a time period where the future of traditional TV networks was a big uncertainty because of the ever looming presence of the internet. Not really because of piracy (Although it did play a small part in it.), but because of brand new competition like RUclips. RUclips to me is the biggest contributor to Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, and Cartoon Network getting into their current situation, since kids were busy watching let's plays of PewDiePie rather than tune in to these shows. Especially since there was no easy way to access these shows online through legal streaming. Meanwhile most kids grew up glued to their phones, something which RUclips had ensured was easily accessible from practically day one when the first iPhone came out.
Most of the 2010s have been just adapting to this brand new world of entertainment with constant internet access and because of that, Thundercats 2011 sadly had to suffer that awkward transition. However as previously mentioned, more streaming services are popping up, and Netflix who has been leading the charge last decade have managed to revive interest in mature animation overall. Heck, we're soon getting a continuation of the original He-Man on Netflix which apparently will be more mature than its original incarnation. Nickelodeon has also partnered up with Netflix on multiple occassions as of late and are planning on continuing said relationship going forward, which is really saying a lot about the state of animation today.

Anime production is incredibly unpredictable. Literally, a show can run for one or two seasons, disappear for ten years, and then get a third, fourth and fifth season, and the creators will be like:
“Hey, remember the show you loved ten+ years ago, but ended on a cliffhanger?”
“While now it’s back, and right where we left off” “Enjoy”.

The old stories were more mature because they were based on parables from the bible and Aesop's fables etc. They had teaching lessons that were inherent but not in your face. If someone betrayed a friend in a fit of spite you could see how that affected people from different characters perspectives. If they helped each other using different skills to advance a goal you could see that in action. Great visual story telling can achieve better results than reading a book to young minds that can't relate to experiences they haven't had yet.

At the time of the 80s and early 90s, tv censors required shows like He-Man, She-Ra and G. I. Joe to teach moral lessons and they couldn't use their weapons in certain ways. He-Man was never allowed to use his sword as an actual weapon, hence why all the scenes are of him bouncing lasers and magical energies off the sword or he swings it at the camera and then the camera switches to the enemy and the weapon or device is destroyed without seeing the sword actually hit it. In G. I. Joe, characters weren't allowed to be killed, hence why everyone jumped out of the vehicles (and why Optimus Prime dying in the original movie was such a shock to kids). To get around these limitations the story writers had to write good stories and couldn't rely solely on action sequences and fighting. Dialogue had to move the plot and the moral lessons added to that story. Better quality of writing led to better quality of shows.

Lets take a look at a country that until very recently, had a booming animation economy: France.
Literally the country that invented the art of animation, and the very first western country to import Japanese animation, before starting a golden age of french-japanese co-productions in the 90s.
Then something happened. Japanese animation was used as a scapegoat for youth violence by the left (and as a distraction from the fact they turned public schools into ghettos with mass immigration), socialists petitionned a law banning snacks and toys commercials during kid programs (effectively cutting ad revenues for animation studios licenced products, because they don't understand economy), prompting the raise of branded show like the Lego series, in which the commercial is the show itself. And more recently, they put a feminist woman close to the socialist party in charge of the public network, that promptly killed "France 4" the very last public channel that was aimed for teens, killing the broadcaster of Rick & Morty, Dr Who and Star Wars Rebels, but at the same time leaving french animation studios like Ankama of Marathon short of their only syndication channel. And guess what replaced France 4? A 24/7 preschool channel. Yes you read that right, they are dumb enough to air Peppa pig at midnight, and don't understand why their new channel is a flop.

"Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem."
    Gabe Newell
Companies can blame piracy all they want. Saying it more often doesn't make it any more correct, because it just simply isn't. The overwhelmingly vast majority of people WANT to support stuff they like, and if the service involved in paying for the product is good, then they'll happily pay for it. Thundercats (2011) released with no advertisement at a time where millions of people were dropping their cable / satellite television services because streaming services were finally taking off, and each platform had content that was comparable to what was on TV, and for far cheaper; more for less. Because CN didn't advertise, they were relying on people to see it on TV Guide, or the fairly new TV guide- the prior being a company with a weekly magazine and live TV channel that constantly scrolled through channels to display what would be broadcast for the present and upcoming 90 minutes, and the latter being the screen overlay that does exactly the same thing, but is under the user's control, and is not the company of the same name- and decided to watch it when it came on. With everyone watching these new on-demand streaming services, and getting rid of television services, there was nothing to tell them that there was a new series. So naturally, when the Thundercats reboot was only a moderate success, it was because nobody watched it, and if nobody watched it, it clearly meant that people didn't like it, close sarcasm.
Then, there's also the older people in the industry who have this mentality ingrained into them that doesn't allow them to see how hypocritical they are when they say loudly and proudly, "Cartoons are for children!" as they make time to watch reruns of Westerns which were all made with strict adherence to a censorship code that was written entirely so that the shows could be deemed 'appropriate for children'. There were codes like 'all law enforcement must be pinnacles of justice, and can never be portrayed as corrupt', or 'all priests / preachers of the Christian faith must be treated with respect by both characters and creators of the programs', and 'protagonists must never be shown consuming alcohol unless it is obviously relevant to the story'. In short, you had cowboys who couldn't drink, paling around with sheriffs who were never the bad guys, making sure that even in the middle of a firefight, the preacher didn't get his robes dirty. These people LOVE these older shows and movies, but will insist to their dying breath that if something is animated instead of live-action, it is only for children 10 and younger to watch; that Death Note and Konosuba are for children. It's those sorts of people who run companies like Cartoon Network.

I think cartoon network and other channels "playing it safe" is a mistake. It used to be that CN and Nick and Disney appealed to a very wide audience, the cartoons and live action shows were things both kids, teens, and adults could enjoy together. Nowadays though, they don't even appeal to older kids, only the youngest demographic above toddlers. This is an interesting thing to think about.

Something else I found out is that due to content policies content must strictly follow age groups and failure to due so affects publishers and content makers, which narrows down content from a broad range of target groups, to a specific age group. very tricky situation.

When I grew watching Cartoon Network, I remember seeing the reruns original Ben 10 and Alien force, generator rex, and looney toons, along with Super Hero Squad, which was a parody of marvel comics (and the X-men, since they still fell under the same category then)
Parodies can be great, but they should be done in moderation. Cartoon Network is saturated with a lot of shows with similar style, humor, and genre, so of course everyone is going to be pissed.
Cartoon Network really should aim for variety in its shows, because it’s _variety_ that brings people to the streaming networks.

Very insightful, a lot of points I hadn't even considered. Great stuff
I would also add that canonical shows (which have over-arching stories that can span beyond more than a couple of episodes or seasons) can be killed via executives by changing their scheduled air time slots ensuring they never find their intended audience (Kings was a prime example of this).
Another way of killing a show early can be via its advertising/trailer. If it's marketted to the wrong demographic then the show is often dead on arrival.
Classic case of this is with Vanilla Ice, a DJ/Rapper that was marketted to children yet his main hit single, 'Ice Ice Baby' is about a prostitute acquiring cocaine from a drug dealer.
I enjoyed TF Animated (the later seasons moreso than the earlier stuff), Transformers Prime & found TF: Cyberverse to be enjoyable too. The new Netflix Transformers show (due out later this year) I have severe doubts over considering Netflix's track record on animations.

There's definitely merit to more mature cartoons. Or animation in general. Granted, this is anime, but I'd still mention Digimon in this discussion. I am not sure about anything past 4 (which also had great moments), but the first three sometimes just hit you with a brick wall. I am not even talking about the finales of season one and three (Apocalimon being ALL Digimon that died in the name of evolution and D-Reaper feeding off Jane's (?) despair over losing Leomon), but also things like Angemon dying, SkullGreymon's whole existence or Mat splitting from the group and yet Gabumon staying in MetalGarurumon despite them "betraying" the Crest of Friendship they carry. Stuff like that has become very rare.

You hit the nail on the head when you brought up the streaming services. You can make more mature content on streaming channels and that your success/failure ratio is almost easier to read and you can order additional seasons if the shows really take off sooner.

I don't know if it's just me, but I notice that these more "comedic/childish" versions of the cartoons are on cable networks (CN, one of the Misney channels, etc) while the more "serious" cartoons/animation tend to be on the streaming services. Not sure if it's by accident or design, but feels to me like the powers that be for each of these media companies are trying to "push" people into the streaming side if they want more "adult" or action oriented animation/cartoon fare.
What you mentioned at the 3:09-ish mark: of COURSE few watched it, CN kept on changing the time-slot & days for the 2011 Thundercats. I was literally only able to catch MAYBE 2 episodes, & that was by dumb luck. Having to jump through hoops just to catch a show is not my idea of fun.

Good children's cartoons were a dime a dozen back in my day (Lord I feel old typing that), try to find good live-action children's programming that isn't in the "educational" programming for very young children genre, even going back 20 years ago and choosing shows that aired widely in North America on basic cable. Outside of Power Rangers and the localizations of various tokusatsu trying to ape that shows success (most of which were by the same company that made Power Rangers such as Big Bad Beetleborgs and its sequel season Beetleborgs Metallix, Masked Rider, and I think even VR Troopers) what exactly was there? Are You Afraid of the Dark for slightly campy child-friendly Horror, Goosebumps for the same genre but with a touch more campiness, and I guess Wish Bone (who the heck even remembers that one) for those few kids who actually liked reading?

I recommend Infinity Train if you want a more adventure/action-ish cartoon. Its more adventure than action but if you like Gravity Falls or Over the Garden Wall, its kinda like a mix of both of those.

Simplistic animation styles like the mentioned newest Thunder Cats release is far easier to pump out under time constraint's. Let's also be honest considering the massive swing to cater to project's less prone to adult themes. I remember watching Gundam and Fullmetal Alchemist, but that gave way to show's like Adventure Time and Teen Titan's. Gargoyle's had fantastic animation and awesome writing and character development, season two wasn't given more time and the animation suffered as well as the story. Oh well Castlevania season 2, am I right lol

I speculate that comedy is popular, because in the past you had action for boys, and cutesy stuff for girls. Comedy however can appeal to both genders, so it seems like an easy way to get broad appeal.

Thundercats 2011 was so good. I randomly stumbled onto it while they were just ending the first season and had no idea it existed prior to that. I haven't really been happy with how CN handles their business for awhile but that one left an especially sour taste in my mouth.
