In the original Thundercats, Lion-O started out as a kid. When escaping Thundera, unlike the others, his statis pod was damage. While he slept, his body still aged, but his mind was still that of a child. So, the interesting part of the show was Lion-O learning his new body and his role as leader while still having the naivety if a child on an unfamiliar planet. It made for some funny moments, but overall it was about growing into the best person you could be.
ZeroKhaoTiKz I have never understood why more people don't bring that up. 80s Lion-o was about a child who was learning to become a man and leader to protect others.
@@08fighter08 And the 2011 version kept that part of Thundercats, with Lion-O being a teenager who doesn't care about his responsibilities suddenly being given the impossible task of avenging his father's death, the fall of his kingdom, being the leader of a resistance group, becoming a king for the surviving members of his race, making allies with neighboring countries, deal with betrayal multiple times, and having to save the universe from Mum-Rah.
Those "cartoons for kids" the new generation of animators love to call shallow, campy and outdated were far deeper and better put out than any crap they could ever hope to work on, so, instead of putting effort into making something good for the kids they market their work towards, they will gladly give them the lowest crap they can lazily put together, so today's kids will grow to be just as unambitious, non-creative, and an overall failure of society, just like them!
@@TwilightWolf032 well the original Thnudercats was campy at times but so were all the other 80s cartoons but that was fine and then the 2011 reboot gave a new more grounded take to the story and that was fine. But Thundercats roar's opening scene is making fun of the original's opening scene (Thundera's destruction) for a whole 1 min 30 sec and it does feel like a spit in the face to those who enjoyed the two previous shows.

Believe when I say that prior to Teen Titans Go's release, western animation was on the verge of becoming like Japanese anime, but then they decided to cancel all the shows that were making western animation more like anime (being action cartoons) because the executives had a very archaic view of animation and felt like the budget of action cartoons was 100% dependent on toy sales. Because of this, they decided to cut costs and revert back to simplistic comedy shows like TTG because they wanted to save money, and rely more on quantity over quality. As a result, Teen Titans Go reverted western animation to the mentality animators had in the days before anime arrived in the US, setting western animation back an entire 20 years.
Thundercats Roar is that mentality at it's worst, not only enforcing the "animation is for kids" mentality (especially given how the videos for it on YT are marked as being for kids, since COPPA enforces that mentality very hard), but also seems to have shown how much western animation has regressed since Teen Titans Go came out. The real part I'm confused by is that I have no idea who this cartoon is even being made for, since I doubt that kids today are going to know what Thundercats is, but it's clearly not made for the fans given how juvenile and insulting it is. They're basically making something for an audience that doesn't exist.
I'm going to give this show the same treatment that I do to Teen Titans Go: ignore it until it goes away.
You are a good person
To be honest if most people did that in the first place it wouldn't last that long, bad publicity help keep it alive somehow.
Not gonna lie, I actually enjoyed TTG. Last year I had an overnight shift that had me dead, and TTG's dumb-fuckery actually helped me relax when at home. I needed something light and easygoing during the time.
Darth Vader I can relate. If TTG wasn’t placed next to the old tv show it wouldn’t be hated nearly as much...or at least if TTG came out next to another more serious TT show. So that people will say “you can’t complain that it’s stupid and bad when there’s another teen titans show for the older fans”
Here too!! This show is trash
didn't the man-bunned creator of this admit that his brothers watched the original and he's doing this because he hates them?
I saw that interview too. Maybe subconsciously he's just trying to get revenge on his brothers? -- and in the process, he's destroying something lots of people love.

That so called Cal"art" is pure laziness to me. I liked the former Teen Titans show. It had humor, and goofy scenes and drawings. But as you say, it was balanced. It had some drama and intrigue, for example the Slade arc where Robin seemed turned evil, or Terra's arc, etc. But TTG was too stupid... and is not that I'm a whiny old man... I remember clearly from my childhood, and if there was one thing that I hated from shows, were actually the comic relief characters. Snarf was the comic relief of the Thundercats (even he had moments of bravery, etc) and I never liked the scenes where he was there. I wanted the action, the technology vs magic, the character development. So no, I'm sure that as a child, I would hate this show, period. Good for the people who like it. I'm happy I lived in an era where cartoons were good, at least to my taste. Thanks for the video!
Eddy Misael Castillo agreed calarts always looked boring and uninspired. Even low tier bad animes have better artstyle and animation than this.

The original Show was advertised to the Parents as : "This is a show that you want your kids to watch". And I can verify when I watched it as a kid, the amount of values that I learned that I still apply to myself today and I'm 30+ years old right now, there were moments in my childhood that I found myself thinking "What would Lion-O do in this situation?" in short, The original show was a complete Positive influence on me and I'm forever grateful for it.
And now seeing this show being reduced to a $$-Grab attempt from a dying medium ( Television is indeed being replaced for streaming services, just like when TV ended Radio back in the day ) really hurts...
So, If you want your kids to watch something meaningful, The Original Thunder Cats is the one to go to, Accept no substitutes!

It just seems like yet another 'reboot' that wants to wear the skin of the original body of work but fill the innards with some other agenda or message that mocks or diminishes or misses the target of the original creation, yet the legacy fans are expected to show up and unequivocally love and applaud the new iteration.

Thundercats Roar is an insult to EVERYTHING in reference to the original Thundercats.
The very essence of it is illustrated to be as Juvenile and Immature as it can possibly manage to be.
At least the original seasons of SpongeBob SquarePants were wise-cracking and cleverly written.
However, this Thundercats Roar is just an abomination of new-age insult-humor and lazy plot writing.

Teen Titans Go's humor is very differnet from Spongebob. TTG's style of humor is very sarcastic, mean, saterical, and refrencial. Spongebob only has a few sarcastic characters like Squidward,Plankton, and Karen. Its more like Family Guy if it was appropriate for kids. Spongebob's humor is much more physical and absurd. there is alot more squash and stretch like a classic cartoon. @@mathieuleader8601 Yep it sure is.
People have seen too much of CalArts, not this “style” but a more complicated problem.
People are bored of nothing changing. CalArts has taken the hit in the same joking way people think Jews did 9/11. When people say CalArts what they actually mean is “I’m tired of friends of friends being employed and not employed based on how good or innovative they are”
CalArts graduate films are all different. But the dominant stratergy is to style something that is the norm for that time. ‘Claus’ blew up the animation industry recently, it looks a little Disney itself but we can probably expect to see a load of graduate films looking like it.
Am I saying CalArts graduates are un-skilled? No. Hire people based on their portfolio, not their name or how many hugs they’ve had from Jon Lasseter.
MillywiggZ nothing you said made any sense whatsoever. Literally none.
Yes the CalArt’s style is bad.
It’s lazy.
And no, people aren’t tired of it bc it’s the same old same old. They hate the CalArt’s style bc it’s utterly uncharacteristic to the show it’s supposed to be a continuation of. Have you seen the original Thundercats? This style is a fucking insult to the show. And that’s why people hate the style.
That’s why original shows in this style aren’t hated for being in this style. Shows like Stevens universe were hated for the inconsistencies in the animation, not the animation style in of itself.
If TTG was an original show with no history or predecessors nobody would care about the style. If TCR was an original show without predecessors nobody would be complaining about the style, they’d complain about the bad art...but from what I’ve seen they wouldn’t complain much.
Thing is, the shows do have predecessors and reputations and expectations to uphold...they don’t, in fact they don’t just fail to uphold the expectations that they willingly took on by claiming the title of the predecessors but they blatantly insult the fans and shit on what they love
Calarts style is wrong named, firts examples of this Chibi style are adventure time, and gunball, the second made on CN UK why is called calarts? Call It CN STYLE
Montaje del espectador:
Agreed.
First time I saw something like the “CalArts style” was the ‘Ghost in the Shell’ manga when I was 14 or something. That lump that’s meant to look like cheekbones was popularised by 90’s anime with the big eyes and etc (think ‘Slayers’), but even before all that it was present in ‘Crayon Shin Chan’ and ‘Doreamon’. That bean look makes a really great and simple silhouette for the face. Also really easy to draw to push out episodes under pressure.
Problem is the tool animators use (like the chibi style cheekbones) are merged with the look of a show. It’s not like a screw driver being used to build 99.9% of all furniture, imagine if you had to glue the screw driver to every piece of finished furniture. You’d get sick of seeing them.
Why it’s incorrectly called “CalArts style” is the background indusrty problem of nepotism and in-group preference. Unfortunately for CalArts it’s a popular and easy name, plus the industry hasn’t helped the stereotype. CalArts had a reputation for being a revolving door for the room A113 into Disney and the animation industry in America. Either true or false the ground work was there for people like PanPizza (and others) to lay into them creating the meme.
‘Wetta Workshop’ and ‘Gobelins’ could be other candidates for the same stereotype, if you think about it. But if anyone pointed that out it would be branded as like “CalArts” just because we settled on that first.
There was a CN style back in late 90’s early 2000’s with ‘Dexter’s Lab’ and ‘Powerpuff Girls’ you could argue ‘Samurai Jack’ too. By the time people got tired of it, CN moved on the internet wasn’t really around the same way it is today. So we never had a CN style meme, even though you are right about that.
Sorry for the essay.

Shows like teen titans and tmmt took some liberties when it came to their source material, but the end product became highly successful. But if a different interpretation comes along and it sucks, then it sucks. Speaking of teen titans, pan pizza showed some reviews '03 series and wasn't exactly welcomed. Company executives need to understand that if you make a show incapable of standing the test of time, which is the fate of hyper comedy, then there is no fan base and no future money to be made. Kids today won't remember this because they'll grow up and focus on more SERIOUS things and not let their kids rediscover the garbage they were given.
TTG will give out one day because it's too everywhere and done everything. TCR! has no story for.Kids to follow. In 1997, I was 7 years old and could easily follow the 1985 ThunderCats because it had an awesome story, had nothing to do with action, though it helped.
Thanks for sharing your opinion. Agree with your points. Personally thought the comedy and animation was pretty bad imo. The characters don't look like the cats they're supposed to be and the designs are unappealing. We're fans of the original and the 2011 reboot so it was cool to hear from someone who hasn't really seen those shows. I think it might have worked as an original IP even though the lol so random comedy doesn't really appeal to me but they also made a lot of references to the original so it seems like they were really hammering in the reboot aspect.
While it's definitely true the artists and others who worked on the show shouldn't be harassed I also think twitter has been unfair in how they treat criticism of Thundercats Roar. They're acting like any kind of criticism is toxic and that's sad.
Hey Trish? I was a little boy when the original Thundercats first aired in the 1980s, and it was one of the staples of my childhood. One of the defining features of the Sword of Omens (Lion-O's sword), was that when at rest, the Sword was around the size of a dagger, and when it's power was activated, it morphed into a full length heavy sword. It was also capable of increasing it's size and mass to an even more absurd degree. I haven't watched this new show, but perhaps they're subtlety satirizing that aspect of the show, or perhaps the artwork is just that bad.
Do yourself a favor and watch the original show. It had a lot of charm and heart to it, and the underlying story was very creative, while the characters and voice acting were memorable. The show always carried a meaningful message, and often times it was through the lens of Lion-O, as he was technically still a cub, learning various lessons of adulthood throughout his adventures and battles. Overall, it was a good show. Also, you HAVE to watch the opening intro, as it's some of the finest animation in television history, while the music just rocks.😊👍
Okay while I don't agree with any toxic fandoms out there, I have only this to say about Thundercats Roar: Don't treat kids like they're stupid! It's okay to tell a story through cartoons. It's okay to make people of all ages laugh, but you don't have to dumb it all down to make everyone happy especially if it's an already established franchise!
I’m assuming everyone for people who know thundercats very well when they watch is they wanna punch drywall
The 1985 thundercats actually had some expensive animation for the time, the studio that was outsourced for its animation had also worked on the Last Unicorn Film, and many of the staff would later go on to work at Studio Ghibli. In contrast to the very limited animation of FIlmation's Masters of the Universe series. The 2011 followed in its footsteps by being animated by studio 20 degrees C. Naturally when the executives put Victor in charge of production, victor disregarded those styles by using his "sausage caricature" style.
Thunder cats opening was the number 1 best animation ever done in the 80s. Just the first 3 seconds blows away all other cartoons of the day.
Honestly I'm just glad we have shows like _Infinity Train_ on the network.
Its like a case of the intestinal flu on the hottest day of the year.....
Another thing about kids not liking a show that parents don't: it extends to older sibling as well. Also kids aren't stupid and can tell when something is good or not.
My siblings used to love TTG! before I showed them a few episodes of the original Teen Titans cartoon. They quickly made a complete 180 and were dumbfounded on why the much better original was replaced by complete junk.
If all kids know is mediocre trash, they will think that the slightly shinier stuff is great, until you give them a few gemstones. Then they will realize that all the stuff they thought was good was really just brightly colored garbage.
Agreed.
I did grow up with the show and it IS an insult to us. The style the tone and everything about it is an insult.
Also you don't have to be in your 30s to have grown up with the show. You can be a kid now too and be insulted by the BS on TV.
The She-Ra show was a utter train wreck and the Jem movie was a total stab in the eyes and salt thrown in them with acid to wash it off.
They are doing this to all the Great films and shows because they want to remake them in their image. It's beyond boring and asinine.
Come on, if these 80's shows weren't so great then they wouldn't do this. It in a way has validated my point. If they weren't so great then
they wouldn't waste time on them. Also, I love that you have a naganata back there. A great weapon for a female. Very Deadly.
We won't be seeing a new property doing a new idea. That's too risky. It's much easier to take an existing series and do something stupid with it. Because the established thing has pre-existing notoriety and a fanbase to exploit.
The problem is, you can't cash in on the nostalgia when the new series is too different. More so, it won't work when other, similar shows (like Adventure Time) do literally everything better. Then all you have left is a bland adaptation trying to ape every other show on the network.
I remember when the CalArts style actually had variance. Flapjack, Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, Regular Show, even Steven Universe. Now it's just a general chibi style where everyone is lumpy, and it's likely due to the characters having muscles. Gravity Falls did muscly characters well in the form of Manly Dan and the manotaurs, even Skips from Regular Show made the muscle thing work. This show just has a style that's too simple for muscles to look good.
And the writing, with most lines trying to be funny? It's trying too hard.
Dannphan... you are brave, so very brave. Thank you for watching the show for us...
You have my love forever.
A concept about a doofus with a magic sword doing silly stuff?....sounds like Dave the barbarian...

1:15 ''serious shows that had more style, more unique asthethic''
My childhood: *intensively cries in teen titans*
They called it Thundercats Roar because they couldn't call it Thundercats Ho.
I'd be interested to see how they made these design choices. I feel that they got to these designs by trying to make them minimalistic but still make them look like cats. They probably couldn't get it to work well with the cat details in the face so they decided to just run with overly simplified designs, but to make that fly, they had to bubble everything. It seems like a downward spiral of a design choice.
EASY SOLUTION: make your kids watch anime. There is an incredible list of anime they can watch from 3-12. And around 12, they will pick their own anime based on their taste.
Pokemon still going large. Tons of child friendly anime to watch every season. When the kids are around 10, they can start watching shounen stuff. And make them watch TONS of Ghibli!
Whenever I see all these new cartoons, I can't help but think about how I grew up watching Digimon and other anime like Sailor Moon and Do-Re-Mi.
And If I was such a huge fan, that I was religiously in front of the tv everyday and never missed an episode was because these shows had a story to be invested in.
Most of the time they ended up having the usual "love & friendship always win" and "if you hard work you'll achieve your dreams" lesson, and bits and bits of comedy, but in the end, they had a complex story with victories and defeats and character growth, that made you empathise with the characters and root for them. You cared for them. And that's why those shows are now so loved and remembered. Because even kids understand victory and defeat, happiness and pain, and being exposed to them wont traumatize your kids
Sadly, this is something that future kids wont see in western cartoons. It's sad to not be able to find another Avatar, or another Teen Titans nowadays, specially on tv
Thankfully, streaming services are collecting old shows, and anime seems to be taking over, so I guess all that will happen is that these companies will go bankrupt and their woke-ass moronic executives will be wonder why. Oh well...
There are plenty of good cartoons nowadays. Look at stuff like Hilda, Ducktales 2017, Infinity Train, Tangled the series, Owl House, Amphibia, Glitch Techs, Tangled the series, Kipo, Big Hero 6 the series, Victor & Valentino, Craig and the Creek, Clone Wars season 7, etc. Stop acting like there there are no good cartoons on.
I do think the "Cal Arts" style is a bit overhated. I mean yeah, it's become obnoxiously ubiquitous, but overused =/= bad in and of itself. What IS bad is the wildly unfitting, inappropriate employment of this art style for franchises that just don't warrant it. _Nobody_ asked for their musclebound action heroes to be rounded out and puffed up, and yet we got TCR and TTG anyway. That's the real issue at heart, tone deaf designers who can't seem to discern when cutesy Cal Arts aesthetic is appropriate and when it's just not. Personally, I feel that the upcoming Pony Life - which is also in something of a simplified Cal Arts style - actually IS an appropriate usage. The subject matter lends itself to a cutesy style, and vice-versa. But Thundercats, Teen Titans and now even She-Ra? What's next, Cal Arts He-MaNOOOO, NO, PLEEEEEASE NO.
Thundercats Roar is the sound of Cartoon Network going bankrupt. You were absolutely right in saying that the executives should have known better.
Why am I not surprised?
The 2011 thundercats was on its way to becoming a masterpiece but was cancelled the moment the first huge plot twist happened thus I've been left with this 9 year emptiness every time I think it about it
I grew up in the Seventies and Eighties, and didn't care for He-Man and She-Ra and frankly loathed the idea of Teenage Turtle Ninjas, but I remember Thundercats, G-Force, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors and Robotech with love and affection. Partly because of the imaginativity, style and graceful animation, but largely because something in the storytelling struck a chord with me. This... monstrosity that pisses on the original under the guise of 'hey it's only a cartoon, loosen up, it's for kids' and then grins maliciously as it tears down what other people build... it reminds me of nothing so much as those boys in Pinocchio who go to Pleasure Island and have 'fun' bashing up beautiful things; they are braying idiots who think they are Real Boys, but really they are Jackasses.
WHY WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT??? Dundercats Bore was known for being crap, based on the first interview.
People who call Big Mouth’s art style ugly clearly haven’t looked at Thundercats Roar for more than a few seconds. I have a deep appreciation for a lot of art styles, but Roar makes me physically nauseous
thunder cat roar = what cartoon inbreeding looks like
I still do not understand why they went with Thundercats. Out of all the 80's franchises to mock, why pick Thundercats when something like He-Man would probably be better suited for this? Kids are more familiar with it because of memes and stuff, a lot of people from when I was growing up poked fun at the hokiness of it, and Skeletor... he's Skeletor.
Thundercats Roar is a terrible idea because it's trying to make fun of something little kids these days have no real connection to. They sure as hell didn't give the 2011 reboot enough time for that to happen anyway...
Funny you mention idiots with magic swords. Mighty Magiswords was that show. I was interested in it because in the clips the main duo had a dynamic similar to Gourry and Lena from Slayers but with a more goofy focus.
you look like a unintentional Saki Yoshida cosplay
Please, for the love of Baby Yoda, CalArts needs to stay away from Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors.
when she said: shape the mind of my children
i was like: wait... arent u 16 or something? 😂
GO WATCH MAO MAO INSTEAD, It reminds me of the old school Cartoon Network shows, where you sit down with the kid and enjoy it probably more than the kid because there are a lot of Jokes that I think would have went over my head when I was young.
YES!!
Welcome to modern western animation, where off model is on model.
First time in your channel, snd you're the first reviewer who didn't find it THAT bad, just like I thought.
Love your voice too, very nice and relaxing
For "cal arts style" I can tell the deference between all the shows a gravity falls character would look out of place in Star vs the Forces of evil.
It's really the bean head look these shows have
@@Saltedroastedcaramel Don't you think they would look out of place next to each other. One show is more cartoony and has more loud colors.
Ironicly called calarts when gunball one of the pioneer of this style was made in CN UK
You're everywhere lmao
Things like this are intended to engage kids, like my daughter, who have next to no attention span and don't want any thought in their media. They want constant goofy zingers that they can sit in front of a tablet and zombie out over. Just like we did as kids watching the original shows on Saturday mornings. Eventually we all grow out of it and then we start demanding more from our content, but this is cheap to make and the target audience don't frankly care about how awful this looks. It's a reflection of how they actually see the world. Everything is abstract and they have little to no concept of proportions. It's to our kids what Looney Tunes use to be for us (people in their 30-50's). Just dumb humour that makes no sense, like cutting a tree limb and having the tree fall not the branch that was cut off. Or constantly dropping anvils on things.
Thunder, Thunder, Thunder, Thundercats meow 😺
*Reads the title of the video*
Me: "Ha, no it doesn't, trying implies effort"
Looks more like a Steven Universe Thundercats reference gag than an actual new show.
" If you loved the original, you will absolutely hate this " why is that even a thing now with so many of these types of shows and reboots in general?
You would think they would want to engage the already existing fanbase of these franchises, but nope,
They instead seem to veiw it as a positive when the original fandom gets pissed off and wants nothing to do with their new shit.
It's so weird to me.
You're so cute and your voice is so soothing your videos are comfy as hell
i watched thundercats...i felt pain watching 1m of it
Turning an anime into a cartoon is peak caricature.
great video trish, really good critique and take on the mindset these studios are having when they see the success of TTG and try to replicate it.
You should really check out the original. It’s pretty rad. It’s always interesting to see a younger person’s take on older media.
Also......is that a Naginata by your shelf?
And this is why pirates still sail the seas, because tv now a days has little effort
Let's tell the Cartoon Network execs NOT to talk down the children. They are probably pretty smart.
New She-Ra: Lets show how girls are perfect & wonderful
New Thundercats: Lets teach boys to hate themselves
Both would had been more tolerable if they made their own IPs. Also women can only be strong when they have the body of men.
How does Thundercats Roar teach boys to hate themselves?
@@michaelstitt7178 It makes fun of anything masculine. Being adventurous, taking charge, or just existing. Check out the lead writer, and you'll know what Im talking about.
@@IchbinX Examples please. Also, what does the lead writer's appearance have to do with a disdain towards masculinity?
@@michaelstitt7178 It's not his appearance. He's a self hating male feminist.
For some reason the character designs and art direction make me think of those beginner artists on art forums who can't distinguish between stylized art or simply bad cartoon drawings.
I checked it out blind. When you ignore the horrible art its pretty good. The only problem is the characters are too happy and aloof. It would be funnier if there was more pain and suffering.
Thank you SO much!! You earned a subscriber, and i thank you for this video on Thundercats ROAR! was there any real reason to make this show because i saw no real for it to have been made
If you weren't around when the original series first aired in '85, then you won't get it. I was 6 years old then and back then, it was about more than just the show. It was product of it's time. It was about the toy line and the merchandise as well. It was about continuing the adventures with the action figures, vehicles, and playsets with your friends. That was a good time to be a child. I didn't watch the 2011 reboot but, I hear that captured some of the essence, at least.
Teen titans to 'teen titans 'Go' ThunderCats to ' ThunderCats 'Roar' see where I'm going with this?
In regards to anime art style, every anime studio has their own unique art style.
* KyoAni - Great use of gradients, colors and special filters. Among the best background and character art.
* Bones - Mostly makes shounen series with heavy action. Has pretty good animation.
* ufotable - High budget digital visuals. They spend more of their budget on digital effects moreso than animations since most of their anime feature characters with magic or special abilities.
* Gainax/Trigger - Absurdist style. Unique and flashy animation style. Creative narratives. VIOLET EVERGARDEN IS A MASTERPIECE!!!!!
* Sunrise - High budget series that specialize in specific demographics.
This is happening everywhere. The latest casualty is games workshop babying down warhammer 40k. One of the darkest and violent but super rich lore. But now its a childrens book.....starwars has been doing it too. Dont even get me started on Ben 10, i was a bit worried when i watched an episode with my son it was getting a bit dark, butthen they rebooted it....i was like what is this.
