1:00 - I've always loved how there's no dramatic slow motion build up to the start of that insane firefight. It's just Val Kilmer sees cops, pulls up the rifle and starts firing.
The beautiful soundtrack of this classic gem is criminally underrated and often overlooked. I absolutely love even the ambient music that builds up tension at times.
Specially when Vincent chased down Macauley for that coffee...one of the best cinematic minutes in film History. And of course the final heist with that shoutout.
Visually I see Collateral a stunning film, but the pacing of the dialogue between the two of them to be the one thing that slows down the pacing of the film. The filming and the action scenes is immaculately done (as usual by Mann) but the dialogue between the two in the cab going between hits for me, means I have to put Heat as number 1 and Collateral as number 2.
The fact that Marines, soldiers, professional criminals, GTA and Christopher Nolan have all borrowed from this movie really says something about just how great this movie is.
I love the scene where Charlize Theron signals Val to stay away. Just a subtle swipe of her hand and his expression just drops. A lot of people love this movie for the shootout, I love it for the nuances.
The motion used is what Blackjack players use at the table to tell the dealer 'Stay' or no more cards. Subtle but brilliant reference to Kilmer's character being a gambling addict.
GTA 5 took major inspiration from Heat! They even rob an armored truck in the exact fashion by blocking it and ramming it from the side! Plus Michael can be made to look like Deniros character
Former British SAS Andie McNab, choreographed the Big Bank shoot out, his book Bravo two zero, is awesome, funny and a classic true story of the SAS in action! I highly recommend it!
The shootout after the bank robbery is my favorite one, so realistic; you really feel you're there. About the rest of the movie, it's a classic Mann film, very stylized, with excellent action sequences but also getting into the core psychological issues of the characters.
What's cool is Andy McNab being a tactics adviser on this movie and the final shootout scene with the bounding overwatch techniques being essentially a remake of his SAS unit's retreat manoeuvres in Iraq before they eventually all got captured. FYI go read the book Bravo 20.
McCauley said in the film that he had a brother out there somewhere. But by the end of the film, I couldn’t shake off one possibility: Hanna was his brother. Maybe not literally, but he was bound to him through their sense of honor and codes, despite being opposite sides of the law, they were the same coin.
I love this movie. It's remarkably good. I remember the first time I saw it, and after it ended, I was really upset about the ending. My gf at the time asked me why... I remember telling her that I would rather have seen Pacino focus down De Niro, slowly lower his gun, have a moment where they had one last exchange... Pacino saying "Go. I can't live without the chase... It's all I've got..." Then De Niro nodding, a moment of respect between the two, then just turning and walking into the darkness to catch the plane. Just imagine that...
"I gotta hold on to my angst. I preserve it because I need it. It keeps me sharp, on the edge, where I gotta be." . . . not necessarily a one liner but . . . . the best
This is one of my all-time favourite films. I have both Heat and LA takedown on DVD, and every so often watch them just to see the way one was developed from, or into, the other. And I still think the slightly more abrupt ending of the TV version isore realistic...
As much as I love these type videos and this being one of my favorite movies. I have to drop my 2 bitch cents in. The sound from the shoot out was from that day of filming but not on purpose. Mann wanted to use loud caps to make everything seem realistic while shooting but planned on doing sound over. But he couldn’t find any noice he found realistic enough and thought the sound that day sounded better then anything else they were finding. So with some adjustments he found that was best. But it was never planned Which is kind of cooler if you think about it
My ultimate top, top favourite movie always and forever. I think val Kilmer saying ‘my sun rises and sets with her’ just makes me crumble. Wow! What a quote x
For those who have never seen it, the movie "Den of Thieves" is almost a direct clone of Heat but kinda a dude bro version of it. If you love Heat there's a solid chance you'll love Den of Thieves
About a decade ago I sat down and watched this movie I was bored with it. Tonight I watched it again and don’t know how I didn’t see the genius of it before. There’s a lot of symbolism hidden in the film itself. One that stands out the most were the “home free” moment where they drive in a tunnel of light. Then De Niro decides to kill the guy in the hotel and starts traveling down a dark highway only to say “there’s time” a reference to his dream about running out of time. I love that stuff and there were a lot of moments like that I missed my first time watching it. Plus the sounds of the action and the action itself.
Heat has become one of my favorite flicks. When I first saw it on a VHS rental, god I am old, the audio during the bank heist scenes blew me away. No pun intended. I had never heard movie audio so realistic and crisp.
great video, great facts. didnt know about US tv cutting the film by 40 mins!! another good fact is that the character Charlene, used to work in a casino where chris meet her, so when she gives the hand signal, that means no more bets but also to warn off. :-)
I watched this movie almost 10 years ago and just did not like it at all. I thought it was generic, cheesy, cliche'd, and predictable. I watched it two weeks ago and had a religious experience. It's an actual perfect film, one of the few in existence. Not a single frame is wasted, and everything that happens to each of the characters is informed by their mindsets and decisions. It was a revelation, and nearly brought me to tears when they held hands at the end.
Kevin Gage who played Waingro was married to Kelly Preston - who subsequently had a relationship with George Clooney, and then married John Travolta in 1991 - between 1985-1987.
Every job for the McCauley crew goes wrong: -The opening robbery: they have to kill the drivers -They try to kill Waingro, he got away -They go to collect from Van Zant, they get a stack of paper instead of money -The precious metal depository, they walk -The bank at t he end, they nearly get caught and everyone dies except for Chris. Chris looses his wife
WATCHED HEAT 1995 IN CINEMAX WAS MIND BLOWING PIECE OF ART ! SHOOTOUT WAS SO LOUD I JUMPED OUT OF MY SEAT ! NEVER HEARD ANYTHIG LIKE IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the missions in gta v heavily inspired by movie. Bang armor truck with heavy tow truck with very same music and than furious shootout against lspd
I can remember talking about this movie while in the military... We speculated about how unstoppable a group of rogue military bank robbers would be against poorly trained beat cops....
They really do show this for our no movement without fire lessons..... they also show tears of the sun for examples of what not to do in jungle environments and tracking courses
#10 Never heard that myth. What I did hear back in the day that this was the first time they ever actually were on set together even though both being in The Godfather II.
Tom Noonan, who had a very small part as the guy who gives Neil the plans for the drill robbery, played The Tooth Fairy in Mann's Manhunter, the prequel to SotL.
1:00 - I've always loved how there's no dramatic slow motion build up to the start of that insane firefight. It's just Val Kilmer sees cops, pulls up the rifle and starts firing.
It perfectly reflects Pacino's statement earlier that "this crew will rock-n-roll and the drop of a hat."
The beautiful soundtrack of this classic gem is criminally underrated and often overlooked. I absolutely love even the ambient music that builds up tension at times.
I wore out my cassette copy of the soundtrack. The CD is holding up better, so far!
Specially when Vincent chased down Macauley for that coffee...one of the best cinematic minutes in film History. And of course the final heist with that shoutout.
Fr its criminally underrated more criminal than the bank robbery in the movie 💀💀💀 true tho
Pure art, in tone with every character appearing on screen/ making the quite athmosphere to be along with.
the genius of Terje Rypdal
the best of the bests, this is not a movie, is a piece of art
Al Pacino goes full Al Pacino and it’s perfect.
“Don’t waste ma mutherfuckin’ time!”
Um... all movies are art.
THIS, THIS is a fucking MASTERPIECE!!!
Amen! This is my favorite film of all time! I love sci-fi and horror, but this is the one that takes the cake for me.
This film is the very definition of a masterpiece. No flaws, no fluff, just pure masterful film making, story telling, and acting.
Period.
‘Heat’ my favourite heist film, favourite Michael Mann movie a full on classic from start to end. A beautifully crafted film in words and actions.
Probably my second favorite Mann film, after Manhunter. (Or should I say, Mannhunter!)
Thief

It was Ashley Judd
Another looker 🌹✌️
Before I knew better I also thought that was Charlize! Nice to know I am not alone 😅
It's not Charlize Theron, it's Ashley Judd.
The motion used is what Blackjack players use at the table to tell the dealer 'Stay' or no more cards.
Subtle but brilliant reference to Kilmer's character being a gambling addict.
The fact that the diner scene was unrehearsed shows you just how GREAT and PROFESSIONAL DeNiro and Pacino were/are.
Pacino and de Niro both said in an interview together that they filmed the scene like 11 times and Michael Mann used the 6th take in de film.
They did it because it would seem more authentic ❤
I think it's Natalie Portman's second notable film appearance after breaking out in Leon. She plays Pacino's daughter in Heat.
She was also in "Beautiful Girls" that same year, a standout in a large ensemble. Most of her scenes are with Timothy Hutton.
stepdaughter
Wish I could see the conclusion of Heat for the first time again. Moby’s massive tune & Mann’s gorgeous cinematography, what a marriage. Just stunning
Xander Berkeley, who plays Waingro in L A takedown, also has a cameo as Ralf, the guy Hanna's wife brings home & is watching his TV! 😁
Fun fact: The direction of Dark Knight was inspired by Heat.
Also, fact: Christian Bale’s Batman was not inspired by Val Kilmer’s.
The shootout after the bank robbery is my favorite one, so realistic; you really feel you're there. About the rest of the movie, it's a classic Mann film, very stylized, with excellent action sequences but also getting into the core psychological issues of the characters.
I know the feeling, makes me want to pick up a rifle and help them escape!
I wish I had said that!
What's cool is Andy McNab being a tactics adviser on this movie and the final shootout scene with the bounding overwatch techniques being essentially a remake of his SAS unit's retreat manoeuvres in Iraq before they eventually all got captured. FYI go read the book Bravo 20.

This is one of my all time favourite films. I've seen it so many times. But I didn't actually know all of these. So thank you.
One of my all time favorites. Bank Heist towards the end one of the best scenes ever.
I remember when I saw this on my first surround system years ago when dvds were a new thing. I was stunned how good it was. Still is!
He said “pacinos one liner” and I asked “which one”. He dials it up in this movie and I love it
"GIMME ALL YA GOT! GIMME ALL YA GOT!" "Run Slick as an alias. You're gonna get the phonebook, do it anyway" "Brother. You are goin' Down"
"I gotta hold on to my angst. I preserve it because I need it. It keeps me sharp, on the edge, where I gotta be." . . . not necessarily a one liner but . . . . the best
One of my favorite movies of all time. Hell yeah! The shootout was epic.
Moby's cover of "New Dawn Fades" was used so awesomely in this movie. (Though it still doesn't top the original.)
This is one of my all-time favourite films.
I have both Heat and LA takedown on DVD, and every so often watch them just to see the way one was developed from, or into, the other. And I still think the slightly more abrupt ending of the TV version isore realistic...

Heat is the greatest heist movie of all time and it's a beautifully made movie. I can't wait to watch it again
Well we have a little Heat in games like Kane&Lynch and GTAV.
The movie wouldn’t have had half the appeal without De Niro and Pacino. Val Kilmer and Tom Sizemore were also brilliant.
All the supporting actors were great. Good casting!
Brilliant movie with wonderful directing and amazing cast!
HEAT's realistic action also became a huge influence on the MCU, notably on THE WINTER SOLDIER and CIVIL WAR.
My ultimate top, top favourite movie always and forever. I think val Kilmer saying ‘my sun rises and sets with her’ just makes me crumble. Wow! What a quote x
I remember seeing this at the cinema, and just, WOW!!!
What Culture NEEDS to be an actual monthly print magazine. I'd sure as hell subscribe to it. Keep pushing the boat out on awesome stuff.
For those who have never seen it, the movie "Den of Thieves" is almost a direct clone of Heat but kinda a dude bro version of it. If you love Heat there's a solid chance you'll love Den of Thieves
H E A T & Collateral are my favorite Michael Man films.
So it was only a rumour that both Bob and Al didnt were present or act together on set but they actually did!
My second favorite movie of all time. A true masterpiece. And one I'm going to watch (again) right now.
FIrst favourite?
Perfect! Well done, loved this movie, it's timeless!
About a decade ago I sat down and watched this movie I was bored with it. Tonight I watched it again and don’t know how I didn’t see the genius of it before. There’s a lot of symbolism hidden in the film itself.

One of my favourite films for sure. If you a decent sound system it is even better.
This is one of the best movies of the 90s
Michael Mann’s run from 1990-2005 is unmatched.
Fav movie OF ALL TIME
Pacino chipped coke throughout the shoot to keep himself on edge to better portray the character. Epic.
Underrated masterpiece
i knew all of these but still exceptionally interesting !
You also put John Wick in the influence as well.I didn't the scene where Pacino and De Niro talk is a traveling site CRAZY
21. Tom Sizemore's "The action is the juice" scene is ad libbed
Deniros best performance in my opinion, Neil McCauley is an amazing character
I watched this movie almost 10 years ago and just did not like it at all. I thought it was generic, cheesy, cliche'd, and predictable.
I watched it two weeks ago and had a religious experience. It's an actual perfect film, one of the few in existence. love this movie. that de niro look is lconic.
I can't imagine any other actor delivering "Cuz she had a GREAATTT ASSS!" line the way Pacino did.
The cinematography of a Michael Mann movie is truly something to behold.
Maan: “you watch the gunfight scene and think man I really don’t wanna do that”
Men as a collective: *4 billion in sync “sure bud”s
Definitely one of my top 10 favorite movies.
20 things you didn't know about supercross the movie my first introduction to motocross and it was worth it
Try and watch it at the cinema with surround sound it was the best cinema sound I've ever heard.
One of my favourite 5 movies of all time.
Awesome film and got the 2 best actors of all time in it!
Jean Reno 'The Professional' as Chris in this film.....They would have had to carry me out on a stretcher from the movie theatre.
I did love the shoot out and was great to see practical techniques used the rest of hollywood could learn
Love this flick!
Kevin Gage who played Waingro was married to Kelly Preston - who subsequently had a relationship with George Clooney, and then married John Travolta in 1991 - between 1985-1987.
love this movie, but if you could cut the extra rape kill part by bad guy or all of natalie portman it would be perfect
Every job for the McCauley crew goes wrong:
-The opening robbery: they have to kill the drivers
-They try to kill Waingro, he got away
-They go to collect from Van Zant, they get a stack of paper instead of money
-The precious metal depository, they walk
-The bank at t he end, they nearly get caught and everyone dies except for Chris. Chris looses his wife
That’s kind of the point. The first thing that messed up the first job was a rolling snowball that affected the rest of the jobs.
Loved that one!
the scene where Eady and Neil McCauley are over looking the city very much looks like its in front of Blue screen
Going thru a phase where I watch this movie a lot….
I’m not complaining.
Waingro is still the worst insult my friends and I use since the movie came out.
Haha me and my friends use “the talented mr ripley” but this is deffo up there
WATCHED HEAT 1995 IN CINEMAX WAS MIND BLOWING PIECE OF ART ! SHOOTOUT WAS SO LOUD I JUMPED OUT OF MY SEAT ! NEVER HEARD ANYTHIG LIKE IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This was definitely a classic by 2 legendary acters
One of the missions in gta v heavily inspired by movie. Bang armor truck with heavy tow truck with very same music and than furious shootout against lspd
Awesome film
Denirois Mr. Flinch ! Can’t shoot without flinching
My favourite film of all time
No mentioning of GTA4 and GTA5 borrowing heavily from this gem?! Genuinely surprised knowing this crew.
When I hear the word Heat, I immediately thought of the It Crowd and The Work Outing episode.....lol
Fantastic movie. But here's a fact you missed: DeNiro's character refers to the "St. Vincent" bridge. There's no "saint" in the name of the bridge.
Masterpiece of cinema.
Yes deveelishly crafted indeed
A story told in silence. What a movie
I just watched Heat! I want to talk about it NOW!
One of the best Movies ever made.
I can remember talking about this movie while in the military... We speculated about how unstoppable a group of rogue military bank robbers would be against poorly trained beat cops....
Was the movies den of thieves like that? Although i know beat cops would loose again a rogue military special forces
5:26 Anyone notice how the window breaks without anyone shooting it?
They really do show this for our no movement without fire lessons..... they also show tears of the sun for examples of what not to do in jungle environments and tracking courses
#10 Never heard that myth. What I did hear back in the day that this was the first time they ever actually were on set together even though both being in The Godfather II.
Ted Levine (Bosko) was Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs.
@ComaDave and Sgt Drucker was Bubba in Forest Gump
@@deveryshepardson3640 Quite a packed cast, isn't it? Wes Studi, Danny Trejo and so on. Masterpiece.
@ComaDave Yes it was a brilliant movie with a great cast Natalie Portman, Hank Azeria and not to forget my man Tom Sizemore
Tom Noonan, who had a very small part as the guy who gives Neil the plans for the drill robbery, played The Tooth Fairy in Mann's Manhunter, the prequel to SotL.
gta 5 blitz play mission is basically heat
Heat was one of the main inspirations for Grand Theft Auto 3
well 4 straight up had its shootout heist scene
Holy shit I fucking LOVE HEAT criminally underrated, they do not make em’ like this anymore.
It's all about the details.
Even if this video sucked, I gave it an automatic thumbs up for *"Heat"* alone.
Duuude, I woulda loved to see Mel & Harrison !!!!
Nothing on the soundtrack? It was massively iconic too.
My favorite movie of all time. Named myself after it... sort of
In my top 5 of the 90s
Intentionally or not, the John Wick films also probably owe some of its DNA to Heat as well.
