Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner.
Try out manga like vinland saga
is there a chance that spectacular spider-man returns?
That’s the discipline.
The book sequel is definitely worth checking out, I just finished it!
@@brotherdandy
Thats the discipline
The conclusion of this was so damn heartbreaking to me.
One of the very greatest movie endings of all time. Some people don't understand it.
@@issi529 yeah both protagonists are two faces of the same coin. Theey are both the reason of their lives.
The most simple complex ending ever....
Heat is just a good freaking blast of a movie. Just seeing Pacino against De Niro was priceless.
This film is so layered that it takes multiple viewing to really understand the depth of this movie. So good.
I remember the first time I watched this movie.
I would love to erase this memory just to live it again.
I am 31. I just watched it for the first time 2 days ago. I cannot believe I went so long without watching this movie.
One of the best films in recent years never topped or matched
That ending is so great, it’s even better with the Moby track behind it
Man, I love that hardboiled neon aesthetic you get from Mann movies. Plus that shootout in Heat was sooo good :3
The neon look in this and Thief are among the best. Gorgeous neon!
When I was at Marine Combat Training as a young lance corporal, they showed us the shootout scene from Heat. Particularly, the part where Val Kilmer engages targets from both sides, runs out of ammo, drops down, and puts in a fresh mag. Perfect example of how to reload during combat.
I have watched this masterpiece of cinema countless times, I know every line of dialogue by heart and yet for unexplained reasons I have failed to properly digest and accept or comprehend the ending at LAX. Something in me has always blocked me from emotionally accepting this unfolding conclusion.
Finding an appreciation for Michael Mann as a teen when The Dark Knight came out because of his films clearly influencing The Dark Knight. Heat was always an outspoken influence by Chris Nolan....But honestly Collateral and Manhunter quite overtly did as well. It's amazing how we discover greatness just to know who inspired what you love.
I spent 20 years of my adult life in LA searching for my identity, purpose and as a protagonist, no matter how harsh the outcome, completely inspired and almost coerced to crime by this film and its musical score alone.
In my top 5 best films of all time list. #4 to be exact. 'Heat' is the only film that every year that I update my 25 best of all time list. Heat is the only film that over the years has climbed up the list at least one spot. Every year. Usually films over time get replaced and dip in the rankings as the years progress. Not Heat, though. This is truly a Los Angeles crime saga that is in a league of its own. A film that will never be topped. I love it.
whats ur other 4 best movies of your top 5 ?
This film is truly incredible, definitely one of my favorites. As always great work Matt. You’re really out here consistently killing the game, glad to see your channel following is growing and covering all of your interests, not solely comics
Thank you! I love comics, but I gotta cover all sorts of media, or else I'll lose passion for doing this.
Matt Draper Hell yeah man, while it’s important to give your fans the type of content they want, it’s your channel and you gotta do what inspires you most. some people will probably flip a shit but your true fans will always have your back. keep up the great work 👍🏼
Probably one of my favorite Mann movies. Back when DVD players were still expensive, I'd lend them my copy of Heat to test out. On junky players, the decoder couldn't keep up with the muzzle flashes during the big shootout. You'd start seeing artifacts and even ran into one player that froze up.
Watchlist: Feed me!
Me: I already have enough to watch, so forget it!
*watches a fantastic Matt Draper video for a movie I haven’t seen*
Me: FEEDING TIME!
You gotta watch Heat! I also recommend basically all of Mann’s filmography. It’s a must!
Any time HEAT comes up, people just gush about the shootouts/heists, the fact that they used actual blanks during the shootout, and Val Kilmer's reload/movement. That's fine, because it's all still fantastic, but it's just over talked about.
Love your analysis and what you decided to focus on though. Felt like a fresh take and you presented it super well. Long live HEAT
Thank you!! You’re right, the technicality of the heists and shootouts are great, Mann is a master at showcasing realistic process, but it’s been done enough. There’s a ton going on under the surface and it deserves attention.
Actual blanks?
Great observation on the epiphany as McCauley is flooded by the bright lights in the freeway tunnel.
Great analysis. Heat is in my top5 and I always thought that the theme was the relationships (in any shape or form), and what happens with your friends or family when they are in the middle of the objective. I think that de wife of Hanna (Pacino) saw something in him when her daughter was in the hospital. When he found her in the steet (waiting for the bus I guess?) and then when he worries aout her, like anchor but for a second. I can write more, but english is not my lenguage, sorry if it's not 100% undertstandable.
Anyway, great video.
Thank you and thank you for sharing your thoughts!
whats your other 4 best movies. from your top 5?
Such is the life of an outlaw. It’s also the life of a sheriff. Fabulous movie. Two men on opposite sides of the law who find they have more in common.
Great analysis of a true masterpiece of a film.
9:24 It wasn't the offer of a bank heist that got him, it was the escape from another kind of prison that most intrigued him, I think...
He was more pushed into it, to escape his horrible boss...not pulled into it buy any friendship or greed.
If only he was treated with a bit more respect and dignity, I don't think he would have done it...there's enough in that little side plot and depth of characters to make a whole another movie on...HaHa..!!
How much is bulletproof glass anyways or at least as vest for the poor guy..!! Ya that part was a bummer, yet I understand accept it... "The greater the risk...the greater the score" according to some Ferengi law of acquisition...lulz
Heat and Last of the Mohicans are easily Michael Mann's best movies.
Thank you for making this heat is truly underrated in this day n age
This is a great breakdown of the relationship between the two protagonists. Great job.
Had this film bought for ages and always meant to get round to it but watching this I'll definitely be watching it tomorrow haha, your research and analysis is superb, really enjoyed your Sorcerer and GL vids to!
Mann's magnum opus, fantastic work here.
Great video as always, thanks Matt :)
Another great video! Keep 'em coming!
But all in all this is a great saga about love, sacrifice and the fear of abandonment. Think from the POV of Charlene, Eady, Justine and Lauren (Natalie. Portman) and Lillian
great video it's heat 🔥
Finally watched this film after keeping it my back pocket for years. Jesus christ, i was absolutely blown away. Was not expecting something with this level of emotional depth on top of a wild and action packed ride. This one has landed in my top 7(?) of all time, and certainly my favorite crime/heist film. Seeing McAuley walk past Eady during the hotel pandemonium, and realizing that he was ditching her in "under 30 seconds" was a moment of pure cinematic ecstasy that i will never forget. This is one of those films that makes me wish I had a time machine so I could see it for the first time again
It gets even better than that. He hesistated. He didn't walk out on Eady in "30 seconds flat." Via the RUclips version of the movie, McCauley first notices Hanna at 2:36:42 and freezes, looking back between Eady and Hanna. He doesn't take a step back until 2:37:02, and he doesn't turn his back on Eady for the last time until 2:37:25. If he had stood by his code and "not hesitate[d]. Not for one second," he would've stayed 7 seconds ahead of the heat, and he would've lived. But, since he hesitated for 20 seconds, it took him a whole 43 seconds to walk out of there.
"That's the discipline."
I've seen a milllion different analysis vids on this movie but this is one of the most consise and straight to the point videos I've ever watched on it. Great job.
Brilliantly put 👍
Great video!!! Thanx!!!
Definitely one of the most amazing movies I've ever seen.
Well said and thank you.
God, I love your videos
I thought I saw enough Heat interpretations but this one is useful.
It is so incredibly rare to see a movie that is both technically perfect (having some of the most realistic and authentic shooting scenes in cinema) and such a beautifully told story. One of my top 5 movies of all time.
That was a very good review . I like that movie , I own that movie and saw some of what he said ,but not all of it.
This is Film Noir art of the 21st century. - brilliant beyond measure
One of my FAVORITE movies, but Neil falling in love with Eddy and bringing her with him to escape made NO SENSE at ALL for a guy so professional and intelligent! You are about to start a WHOLE new life in a place where NOBODY knows ANYTHING about you where you can make a fresh start and be whoever you want to be so WHY would you bring somebody with you who could someday turn on you?
The 2 best parts of the movie for me was when Neil made the decision to go GET Waynegro AZZ! I LOVED that shyt because he HAD to get GOT no matter WHAT in my opinion and the ending scene where 2 professionals acknowledge and show respect for each other's gamesmanship with a gentle hand embrace was straight up CLASS!
It is my opinion that Neil LET Vincent kill him because to me he CLEARLY had Vincent in his sights FIRST but did NOT shoot and hesitated. The ONLY reason why he did this I can think of is because perhaps him thinking Vincent being the kind of man he was would never stop chasing him and I guess Neil was tired of running. One of the BEST movie endings in history INCLUDING the chosen soundtrack at the end.🤔
He never let him kill him lol Vincent doesn't miss twice 😂
You can't understand what falling in love is like? That's pretty sad.
great flick hope they do a nice 4k soon
perfect breakdown
What a masterpiece of a film
YEY NEW VID! great work as usual! Can i ask if you'll ever try your hands on Drive(2011)?
Thanks! I don’t have plans on covering Drive but never say never.
@@MattDraper What ever it is I'll watch! Fingers crossed though
Always look forward towards your videos. They never disappoint man. Impressive. To quote my favorite Sega game as a kid “he’s on fire!!”
NBA Jam!
You should cover Collateral at some point
OH YEAH NEW VID YEAH
Brilliant analysis. Wish it was longer. I think you should've mentioned how the Dennis Haysbert character is treated like shit by his boss. He isn't used to that grind and like Sizemore, the robbery is the juice for him too. Also, the Val Kilmer story was left unclear in the end. Where do you think that story went eventually?
Mann wrote a sequel novel. Heat 2. Well worth it.
There's a flip side to that coin
Literally just watched this a couple days ago
Heat is the greatest heist film of all time
5:35 Michael Mann said Hanna acts extreme to throw suspects off balance. It is an act. He only does it with criminals.
GREAT MOVIE. GREAT ESSAY.
When are you going back to comic essays Matt? You need to do Watchmen, and especially Maus with the impact they had on the industry.
I love thid movie and this video makes me want to watch it again.
Having seen it countless times, I can tell you that you can never watch it too much.
Heat is goat level
you can see Heat and manhunter in the Miami vice TV show, excellent!
I meam you could've also done the exact sameovie with some changes and have the message be that, yeah- intelectually Hanne might be alone now, in the sense that the one who understood him is gone, but that doesn't mean he has to be lonely. They say all great minds are desrined to be alone, but I think there's still hope for love and a sense of collectivism, there's no need for such intellegent minds to create their own problems, their own loneliness.
nice
Could you please videos on Creepshow, Akira, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, The Incredibles and Turbo Kid?
I agree.
Hannah should have stayed home with his wife and let the criminal sort things out and rejoin his loved Edie and everyone would have been happy and the streets of LA, CLEAN, for once...furthermore, no flight at LAX that night would have been delayed and no pissed traveller would have boarded a flight in anger🤷
duality
best movie ever
Are you a fan of The Midnight?? I heard “Vampires” playing at the end
Yeah, I'm a huge fan!
Cool 😎. Synthwave 4 life!!
Bro, how do you create such a channel, without your face. Please tell me
Great movie that would be better if they cut about 35-40 minutes from it.
Pacino wins the plot. De Niro wins the story.
can spectacular spider-man return?
I haven't watched "Heat" despite being 34 and despite it being on my watch list. I've always been put off by its runtime, I don't have the endurance to watch movies over two hours anymore haha. Maybe one day, though!
Trust me, it’s worth the time!
You'll barely feel the three hours...Mann is THAT good.
I just watched for the first time at 35 and was blown away. Trust me it’s worth it
Great great movie. But you know, for how smart of a criminal deniros character is.. how u gonna try to murder someone right outside of a diner 😂 then letting him run away
The deconstruction of the Alpha male.
What a horrible movie. I couldn't make it through.
What did you find wrong with it? I’m genuinely curious.
That's certainly a take
Must be a Marvel fan.
Bad bait
