  • Michael Mann's HEAT is the gold standard of crime thrillers. There have been many imitators, but few are able to capture its true essence. In this video, I go over what that essence is and much more!

HEAT is one of the best films I’ve ever seen, such an impact and legacy this movie has. Kane & Lynch, GTA IV and GTA V, The Dark Knight, The Town, Den of Thieves, the list goes on that HEAT will remain a timeless masterpiece.

A most incisive analysis. Heat is one of my favourites of the genre, decade, and Mann's filmography. Here's a left field quick take: What if Heat is really about how a serial killer is brought to justice both on the street and the law, in the form of Hanna and McCauley? I know that's part of the story and that is the brilliance this movie.

Great analysis! Although, I think you’ve shortchanged the performance of the great actress Diane Venora.
Her performance of Justine stands out above am everyone else. She plays a venal, self absorbed woman, a detached and neglectful mother, so deftly… her shock and tears when she’s at the hospital dealing with her daughter’s attempted suicide, are so convincing… and when she wonders why her daughter would ‘do this to herself’, it’s so incredibly sublime, I get shivers every time I see it!

I love that genre wise HEAT is a crime film, with exciting and outstanding action pieces that inspire other directors, but in its essence it's a character movie and well made drama. And it ages better than any other Michael Mann's movie, because it can easily be his best film ever.

You did not only put into words what I’ve felt during my many viewings of this film, but also make a video essay about it. Excellent! Cheers to you and your thoughts and analysis of the film!

It is a shame you don't have more subscribers. You are an excellent analyst and you are quite eloquent. It is obvious you have thought deeply about the themes of Heat.

The best ensemble cast of any movie in my opinion. De Niro, Pacino, Val Kilmer, Danny Trejo, Jon Voight, a young Natalie Portman and the list goes on. 👍🏾

I just found your Cine-mechanic channel and was hoping you had some Mann-alysis, so this is fantastic! As a Mann obsessive, in love with his highly visual, immersive and moody storytelling, I sometimes think I've read/heard it all, but what you say about tone being "one thing that communicates more information faster and more efficiently than either dialogue or plot" is a breakthrough for me, and a key tenet of Mann's style I hadn't quite pinned down. I know he's expressionistic as hell, but I hadn't meshed that with his hardboiled minimalism. The moods are all story. Mann doesn't waste a second, and his approach is echoed in Pacino's yell of: "don't waste my motherfucking time!". Thanks for this. Big fan of all your work and I hope you'll do more more of Mann's movies :-)

Very beautifully written and edited video, great job! You gave a really nice analysis as to why we feel what we feel when we watch this movie, and why it all other Crime Dramas can't quite reach this level of realism, grittiness and style.

Bravo. I agree with most of your points and sentiment. Heat is a highly unusual and rare intimate crime drama. It takes you to a small sect underground crime world and shows you how it operates. A lot of male testosterone in this one.
