The transition for professional athletes is similar to what those of us in the military go through. Admittedly, our specific situations are totally different from an economic, social and lifestyle standpoint. But, it is eerily similar when you break it down to the nuts and bolts.
The performance anxiety metaphor was unexpected. Never heard it described just that way and as a positive thing. A feeling he's searching for instead of receding from

I turned down a few offers to play college ball cause they weren't full rides and my parents weren't convinced that it would've been the best decision for me, considering I had really good grades (finished pharmacy school now) but I gained 40lbs in the first three months of University... I was truly lost and didn't know how to do anything without having my personal identity and schedule based around basketball which was my life and still a big part of it, but getting over that sense of mortality essentially was probably the most difficult thing I've gone through
You booked JJ. You guys must be doing well! Many jocks in HS got stuck there mentally and emotionally while motivated the nerds to pursue a claim in this world. Life's hard!
They couldn't keep their egos in check. They Let all the gassin up go to there heads. Self awareness really isn't that tough. I knew and accepted when I was 14 that my senior year was the last time I'd ever play organized sports.
Dan, buddy, let’s write a book called “An Athlete’s Grief: Walking Away From the Love of the Game” 80/20 my way. You have plenty of answers from athletes to write a book. First chapter, your grief. Boom. NYTBS.
When I was at Maryland I hated JJ Redick at Duke ( anyone who knows Duke -Maryland 2000-2007 knows that history), but I can honestly say he has become my favorite person to listen to about basketball and especially the NBA. What he said about witnessing the greatness in womens game, but all the talk has been about the bullshit, is 100% Facts! We need to recognize when we are witnessing the greatest players and coaches performing in the present time ! A easy and great example is Messi coming to MLS, and everyone wanting to witness one of greatest ever playing the game now in present time!!!
JJ that ain’t just sports. Anyone transitioning from one stage of their life they’ve loved to an unknown stage feels like a death. And the longer you did that stage the worst it feels. Leaving the military felt that way for me
As a former athlete, i wasn't sad when it was over because I did it until the wheels fell off. The pain & injuries made me stop at age 40. Dan sure knows how to do these sad ass interviews about mental health. It's actually just boredom, not a mental health crisis. Find something else that challenging to do & all that mental shit goes right out the window. Guys with millions of dollars should always be able to find something challenging to do.
Yes! It was sad when I walked away from college football. I struggled until I found martial arts about a year later. It was tough to fill the time formerly used for football.
Does JJ have beef with Stugotz? Awesome interview - In a perfect logistical and contractual world, I would love a 'Mind The Game' episode with JJ, LeBron and Charles Barkely.
He knows Stu has done the Stu thing and said who is JJ to talk down to his idle Mad dog, that sort of thing. And he had enough of the money shenanigans
@@nevermindthe90s for the tension, obviously! And he's the one person NOBODY would expect to have their Xs and Os down pat. Think of it not just for analysis - we need a contest of technical opinions for that show to evolve (in my humble opinion). 🙏🏿
I was thinking this same exact thing last week after watching some of the MindTheGame podcast. ( though i would imagine that LeBron would be the owner and JJ is the head coach). Would love to see this... especially since I live in Vegas now.
23:00 JJ is in some rarified air hoping for fans to care about the "why". I think the average fan has a WWE level of "understanding" of the game; why is because the people I don't root for are EVIL, as in life.
No, I played Highschool football. Played my last games, graduated that summer and immediately entered the workforce without thinking twice or looking back. I was well aware the high school was my pinnacle of sport. How would you not? Is self awareness really that rare?
It was obvious that JJ was inspired by the "Details through the mind of Kobe Bryant" because it's almost a replica. He even took part of the name. The only difference that I can see was Kobe really didn't speak of himself as LeBron continually does. He placed you in his mind to see how he dissected the game through film study. Giving you the tools to improve your game using the same methods. It was about the GAME, not him. Per se. LeBron is more like Superman with great physical gifts, his advantage isn't necessarily scientific. On the other hand, Kobe is more like Batman as a superhero...no real physical advantages, but his work ethic, study and execution made him one. Batman is much more interesting than Superman. Why? Because you can apply what Batman teaches to your discipline and improve yourself. You can never leap tall buildings in a single bound. Kobe is the player's player.
JJ pretending like anything he's ever done is important other than providing for his own family is absolutely ridiculous. You played a GAME and you talk about a GAME. None of its been important 😂😂😂
JJ & Bron are terrific together. 🙂
I hope other platforms speak on what JJ said about letting go of the game, that was some powerful insight.
The transition for professional athletes is similar to what those of us in the military go through. Admittedly, our specific situations are totally different from an economic, social and lifestyle standpoint. But, it is eerily similar when you break it down to the nuts and bolts.
JJ a perfect guest… ask a question and let him cook! Lol
JJ is so articulate with how he explains stuff and I love him for it. Thanks for the insite JJ
The way he explained the transition as an athlete is so real
Love JJ’s perspective. Glad you got him on the show!!!
JJ not feeling Stugotz at all 🤣
Talk about two different personalities!
@@chrispurcell8892 I think Stugotz is the “people on your show” 😂
"GUYS HE MADE 116m!!!" - as one of the first things out of his mouth to start the interview
Don't blame him. Sure am tired of that generation of men whose go to is bluster and bullshit. Word heavy and information light.
Dan always pocket watching 😂

It's PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE 😂😂😂 how can you pocket watch something that is seen
Love the bit at about 3:30 where he lays out exactly what else he wants to do. Guy is a quick legend in media. Truly one of the best.
Dan laughing silently when JJ cursed then apologized for his language. This show is so freakin' meta. Love you guys!
This was a great interview.
The performance anxiety metaphor was unexpected. Never heard it described just that way and as a positive thing. A feeling he's searching for instead of receding from
Literally the same thing I got caught on. Making performance anxiety a positive isn’t something that’s been offered as an option to me before.
That's because he is an elite level athlete. Their mind works in crazy ways
Damn this interview and Klay Thompson interview are the most authentic insightful podcasts I’ve seen from NBA players.
All the smoke. The old man & three. Pivot. Are a few that are always insightful
Couple of J's cuttin it up
This should have been a South Beach session
the whole ass segment?! seriously thank you for the comment. saved me watching this tool kit for 22 more min lololol.

THUNDER UP BOYS
Great interview, JJ always really good. Please dont let Stu talk next time he is on.
Great interview
JJ you should ask your podcast cohost why the discourse around solely basketball shifted from about how the game is played into what it is today.
Stephen A and Skip bayless did this. It happened while Bron was new to the NBA. The NBA making the individual bigger than the team did this.
Way to turn it into a South Beach Session, JJ.
JJ 🎉
JJ!
That JJ Redick is a handsome man

no one has ever more obviously played college basketball at duke than JJ
True! That’s why I enjoy the “love/hate” relationship JJ & Richard Jefferson have. RJ gets AT him. The sarcasm is relentless.
I just wanna tighten the JJ’s mike, just keeps shaking. He’s definitely a leg shaker.
