This is the fastest and most convenient way to use the less expensive filters. I didnt even use a hair dryer- just stayed real patient and pealed it off, then stuck it to the back of the fridge. Note: I had to stick the label a bit higher up than the video to ensure the sensor lined up with the interior fridge sensor. Works like a charm:-)
Thank you very much for the comment and yes, it is ridiculous on these prices and they’re trying to make you buy it from them. I’m so tired of companies doing that. Thank you again for watching and have a blessed day.
I just put the old label on the new one. If you need to you can use a piece of scotch tape to hold it in place. Line it up approximately where it was at on the old one. Then make your calendar six months out to remember to change it.
Thank you! Is there any work around to get the filter light reset? Its beyond ridiculous that even if I do this hack that I won't have the filter light button feature on a brand new Fridge!! Crazy.
Unfortunately, there’s no way to get around resetting the filter light because it knows it’s the same chip that’s been in there. It would only reset if it was reading a new chip, which means you’ll have to buy their water filter. Thank you for watching and have a blessed day.
This worked great. THANK YOU! Saved the average Joe who thought GE was for Americans, but no they do this scummy practice of placing these things here to force us to buy these high cost filters. Again thank you my friend.
I just bought 3 xwf filters for my ge fridge that takes a xwfe filter ( as per GE website). The Xwf should not work in my fridge. So, I carefully took the label off my XWFE filter, and when I looked at the backside of the XWFE filter, there was no chip, just a blank adhesive label. So I put the XWF filter in my fridge and it worked. So, there isn’t any difference between my XWFE filter and my XWF filter. I wonder if GE is sticking the new XWFE on XWF filters….. very strange. Of course, this is what class actions suits are all about!
Any idea how I was able to buy a GE filter that is in a GE box, but doesn't have a chip? It says genuine GE filter too and has instructions that say GE. I didn't jnow a XEFE filter could be bought without a chip.
I do not know. The XWFE's chip uses radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to communicate with the fridge. This allows the fridge to authenticate the filter's origin, detect leaks, and determine if it's a genuine factory product. Generic replacement filters cannot replace the XWFE because they lack the RFID chip.
I agree. We are all for companies and people making money, that’s the American way but to limit it to only buying replacement parts from that company is BS. Thank you for watching and have a blessed day!
The purpose is so you can only use their filter. If you put a filter in that doesn’t have it, it will stop the flow of water. Thank you for the question and for watching. Have a blessed weekend!
I just tried this but it didnt work and I kept getting the Err code whenever I pressed the water button. The work around for me was, I took the XWFE label and applied it to the new XWF filter and it worked. Fridge is only 6 months old so I'm wondering if the newer models will not read the chip since it's backwards when stuck to the back of the fridge.
I purchased a GE fridge 6 months ago with this exact looking RFID filter replacement requirement. My Filter status is currently at 1% remaining. I successfully removed label and taped it to the back and put original filter back in and still working..My Question: After it reaches 0%, will it stop dispensing water? And if so what do you do next? Just swap out with a new generic filter? (I purchased some and already made sure they work with old RFID chip) ....or Do I remove the sticker and reapply it? How does the water begin dispensing again if it stopped dispensing? (There is no reset button on my recently purchased fridge, so do you think I may have to unplug fridge to reset it?)...just trying to anticipate the entire process of using cheaper filters. Thanks.
It sounds like you are good to go. You will put in a new generic filter and just write a date on there six months from the time you put it in and that’s how you will know to replace it. Unfortunately, there’s no way to reset anything because it’s reading that you have the same GE filter in there. That chip is only there so they know there’s a GE filter in there if that chip was not there and you put that generic filter in there it would not work because it will not read a GE chip. Thank you for watching and have a great week!
What is the best way to get off the label? I got off main part but there is still that back part of the circut that I wasn't able to. It does not help that it is foil thin and tears extremely easy when trying to get off.
You just have to heat it up good and peel it off slowly. I had the same thing happen to me when I was making the video. Thank you for watching and have a blessed day!
Sorry to hear it did not work for you. Go ahead and buy another GE filter and then when that one’s done try it again. In my testing for this I actually went through three GE filters because one of them the chip did not come off clean and it left some residue on the filter so it did not work when I put it on the fridge. So that is always a possibility that that chip just did not come off clean. But again you can always try it next time before you buy another GE filter. Thank you and have a great day.
Thank you so much for watching. Unfortunately, because we are using the same label it believes it’s the same filter so the light will always be red. You’ll just need to put a date on there which I do six months and replace it every six months. Thank you again and have a great day.
Interesting. I just replaced my filter with a "genuine" GE XWFE and took off the label on the old "genuine" GE WXFE and there was no RFID chip like you had. I bought mine for less than 1/2 price online and, who knows, maybe they're good fakes but I'm not having a problem with them. (Now adding an edit -- I wonder if maybe my Café model doesn't really need a WXFE even though the lit says yes. I need to manually confirm on the control panel that the filter has been replaced. So maybe I lucked out that my cheap knock off is OK.)
I won’t be surprised when fridges require internet connections. These tags cost almost nothing. Too many companies are preventing people from repairing their own products or requiring customers to stay in the company’s economic ecosystem for parts.
We just got a new printer at our job and we cannot use the generic cartridges for ink that we already have because of the chips that are in the new ink cartridges for that printer. You have to buy them from that company. Cannot stand this. 😡
Wish I would have seen your video before I bought and replaced the GE filter. I won’t make the same mistake again!!! Thank you!!
You are welcome! Have a great weekend!
The only thing I’d add is that my first stick-on didn’t work, so I looked at where the label lines up and adjusted the height of it and it worked.
Thank you for sharing your experience. I know that will help others. Thank you for watching and have a great day!

I just did this today. It was easy and works just like you said. Thanks.
Excellent! Thank you so much for watching and have a great week!
Worked great! Thank you kind Sir!
3 filters for $27 instead of $50 or more for one. Now let’s just hope they work/ taste as good also. Worth a shot.
You are welcome. Thank you for sharing and have a blessed day!
Your video worked and i was able to buy 3 filters for half the price of one GE filter. Thank you!!
Glad we could help and thank you for watching.
Thank you for this money saving hack, $49 plus shipping and tax for 1 filter is ridiculous, again thank you and will sub your channel 🙏🙏

GE is scummy for doing this..
Thank you so much! I didn’t know what to do!! Y’all are a lifesaver!
Thank you so much! Thank you for watching and have a blessed day!

Going to try this ! Not spending 60 on a filter! Dont buy GE Fridges people ...wish i done my research first! Hopefully this works!

You're a real MVP, thank you so much for this info!
Works like a charm! Thank you
You are welcome. Thank you for watching and have a blessed weekend.
Does anyone know when you take the chip off and put it back on will it reset the filter status/light? Thanks
It will not reset the filter light. As far as that goes it thanks it’s the same filter. That’s why it will not reset it.
Thank you so much for sharing this❤
You are very welcome and thank you for watching. Have a blessed weekend!
Should the light change from orange to green or with this hack does it stay orange
It will stay orange. Thank you for watching and have a blessed weekend!

Generic replacement filters cannot replace the XWFE because they lack the RFID chip.
You can also use nail polish remover or acetone to gently melt the glue holding it on for an easy peel off.
Thank you for the suggestion and thank you for watching. Have a blessed day!
We all should stop buying GE. I know I will not buy any more. Ty for the hack.
I agree. We are all for companies and people making money, that’s the American way but to limit it to only buying replacement parts from that company is BS. Thank you for watching and have a blessed day!
Wow ! You are the Man
Great clip
Save money too
Thanks for sharing
You are welcome and thank you for watching! Have a blessed 4th of July!
What is the purpose of the RFID chip in these filters, just gives you the filter replacement light or stops water flow?
The purpose is so you can only use their filter. If you put a filter in that doesn’t have it, it will stop the flow of water. Thank you for the question and for watching. Have a blessed weekend!
Just tried your hack. No error code. Water is flowing through generic filter. My question is: will it still allow the ice maker to work? T. I . A.
Yes, the ice maker will still work. Thank you for watching and have a blessed weekend!
You're the best! Works like a charm! Thank You!
Thank you! We are glad it worked and thank you for watching!

Nothing would surprise me with how they try to make things difficult for us. Thank you for sharing and have a blessed weekend!
Thanks, will try it!
Great! Thank you for watching and have a blessed day!
great i was about to open my new filter and old one

You are a dang genius!
Thank you for saying that. My wife got a good laugh. She never heard anyone calling me a genius. 🤣😂 Have a blessed day!
My GE cafe works with xwf. $50 for a filter every 6 months is outrageous. Xwf cost around $15
Thank you for watching. Have a blessed weekend!
Excellent! Thank you. Stick it to the man!
Thanks, will do! Have a great day!
Gonna try this out
Great. Thanks for watching and have a blessed weekend!
Do you have the link of where i can get the amazon fileters?
Amazon Basics Replacement GE XWF Refrigerator Water Filter: amzn.to/3Poje19
Is there another hack? This didn’t work. I think the chip broke when I removed it
You can put an inline filter on the outside going to the fridge. Thank you for watching and have a blessed weekend!
Awesome thank you
You are very welcome
Anyone try to get the RFID out of the free bypass plug and also use the water filter????
Couldn’t line it up or something. Didn’t work for me. Stuck ordering another filter but first I’m going to call GE and let them have it!

Thanks! It sucks that GE does that.
Yes it does. Thank you for watching and have a great day!
I will never replace my GE refridg filter again, because my water comes from a Watts 4 filter R.O. unit!
That is great. Thank you for sharing. Have a blessed weekend!
THANK YOU!!! I just bought 3 filters from eBay that are all useless! GE is sooooo dumb!!!
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You are welcome! Thank you for watching and have a blessed day!
Thanks was tired of paying 50 a pop, I want to buy you a beer
Thank you very much and thank you for watching! Have a blessed day!
Ge is soooo scummy! And this guy is brilliant!!!

We just got a new printer at our job and we cannot use the generic cartridges for ink that we already have because of the chips that are in the new ink cartridges for that printer. You have to buy them from that company. Cannot stand this. 😡
Can I send you flowers?
No wonder consumer hate American brands.
They do make it hard on us. Thank you for watching and have a blessed weekend!
Thank you. Everything is a scam
It definitely feels like that, that everything is a scam. Thank you so much for watching and have a blessed day.
