Boys of Summer is one of my most cherished songs of the 80's. I was like... 13 back then and I heard it on repeat. It reminds me of my youth, the book I was reading, how good the times were. And rigth now this version makes me cry... so beautiful and melancholic.
Don is a complicated and intelligent man. This runs through all of his music and makes him a genuinely interesting person. His musical talent is astronomical but it's the brain food that marks him as special.
I have always liked this song as it painted a picture of the melancholy we feel end of summer. It reminds me of the summers at our beach house growing up. The girl who became my wife and I spent the summers of our teen years at beach. When she passed away I had this song played at her funeral because it reminded me of our summers together...and her departure from life. The image evoked by the lyrics "empty lake, empty streets, the sun goes down alone" echoed my feelings at her loss...and still do all these years later. It is a lovely bittersweet song...
Great song off a GREAT album, Building the Perfect Beast... saw Don on tour for this one and he was amazing, but he always has been a pro whenever i've seen him solo or with The Eagles. Love this slowed down version.
The official video won Best Video of the Year on MTV, which makes it even more of a blast from the past. It's so great how so many from one band went on to such great solo careers like Don, Joe Walsh, Don Felder, and Glenn Frey. Glenn Frey's "Smugglers Blues" is also a great song and video. There's just something about drummer / singers that is just so impressive with the talent it takes to do both at the same time.
I have nothing but respect for all the Eagles, but sorry Glenn ( R I P Legend) Felder, Walsh etc did not have anywhere near the success Don Henley did in his solo career & with the utmost respect to them All, Henley is an absolute genius lyricist, Exceptional singer. His solo songs will be epic centuries from now and his duets with Stevie Nicks, Patty Smyth, Trisha Yearwood are among the best duets ever heard. There's just simply no-one like him. I do agree though the few drummers with great voices usually are extremely special. Phil Collins is the perfect example, Karen Carpenter (R I P) was a great drummer and a fantastic singer too. All three are truly remarkable. I think Don's songs sets him apart as they have great depth and wisdom about them amongst all the other things, and that's what makes him my favourite.
You remarked on the open vowel way he sings the "I' in "I can see you...". You need to keep in mind that Henley is a native Texan raised in rural East Texas on a farm. And even though his speaking voice no longer has a heavy southern accent that it may have had as a kid growing up in East Texas, when he sings, it will come through to a certain extent, especially on those kinds of vowel sounds. We in the southern US pronounce all our words such as I, bye, high, sky etc with that 'open vowel'...And true southerners are not ashamed of it either. Proud of it in fact! 🙂 Like a song I once heard says, "I speak my southern English just a freely as I wish" #Southernstrongsouthernproud! #DonHenley
@@RobertEskew The version is a live set that Steuart played on not the released single version...I should have made that clear...In the studio version the outro was trunkated and faded out....The live version which is on YT has smith playing...

Wow, I've heard this song so many times over the years, but this version made the lyrics hit so much harder and I'm actually a little teary, maybe because I'm at "the age" when I've been doing a lot of reminiscing about the "good old days" with lost loves, regrets and missed opportunities and realizing they're gone forever.
It is so hard to find the original recording of this slower version. It truly is one of the greatest songs of all time whether it’s the 80’s cut from the album or this one.
Thank you, I had never heard this version of this song, and it hits hard. I was a teenager when the original came out and I loved it, but this version, after all this time, hits a special place.
I always thought the “boys” in Boys of Summer were the summer residents. Those boys whose families had summer beach homes or the boys working the summer tourist jobs. The girl, I assume, is a year round resident gaining attraction from the summer boys. The narrator is saying, I’ll be there for you with a growing love beyond the boys of summer. It’s one of Henley (and Mike Campbell’s) best songs.
Boys of summer : Henley is being a gentleman and not saying who it's about, but "Boys of Summer" were the Beach Boys, and they past her around like a joint.@@erickraemer2138
I saw Don touring on his own with Katrina and the Waves at Redrocks back in... 1986?? A long time ago anyhow. Excellent concert, and when he came out and did an encore of Hotel California it was truly epic. Also a lot of people remark about drummers who can sing. Don was my first hero in my mind.
i first heard this version of this song round about the time i split up with a girl who looks really similar to Beth as well so this hit me in the feels a bit 🤣
I remember this song from when I was in my late teens and my first serious relationship had just fallen apart. I would drive around at night with the windows down thinking about my ex-girlfriend and listening to this over and over.
I have always loved this song. This laid back, slow version is great but I still prefer the original version for its catchy tempo. Thanks Beth for playing this iconic song. How about reacting to the band America playing Ventura Highway. It is a great classic that I know you will enjoy!
Man........ the texture in his voice in this version did what the original came so close to doing.......... it broke the dam that's held back a torrent of remiss.
have to ask - have you listened to the studio version of this song - this slow "contemplative" rendition really takes away the story behind it. Can't speak for others but Americans all (nearly all) can relate to having had one very special summer love. Young, free, the beach or the lake - the girl of your dreams. Lost in love for a brief (all too brief) summer you feel as though it will last forever. Then summer ends. People (your girl) go back to school or back home or...they start a job and they disappear from your eyes - your heart your mind...its as if they were suddenly snatched away - swallowed up in a proverbial ether. The sights, the sounds, the smells - perfume, suntan lotion, salt water spray - it was all so perfect and suddenly gone. The townie boy or guy who fell deep and hard in love longs for it all to come back and to never stop. The beach is as cold and empty as your heart and soul now that it all has suddenly ended. You want it back but it isn't going to come back. All you have is the sweet memory so rich and so fresh you can hear, smell, taste, feel the summer sun on your skin - and now its cold and empty. All of this is perfectly conveyed in the original - studio version of the song. This "contemplative" version is odd - its like its been decades since that special summer love was lost. The man is old(er) and by that stage he should have got on with his own life and had his own career and family. The original / studio version is just right - the man is a townie...its only been a few weeks or maybe a month since it all ended. He hasn't had time to get over it. He is feeling raw - empty like the beach. I would LOVE to see you do a reaction video to the studio version of this song.
Great song. I've been following the Eagles but not Henley's solo carreer and I first knew of this song through First Aid Kit's rendition of it (great as well BTW)
Randy Meisner from the Eagles passed away a week ago and would love you too listen too him sing Take It too the Limit Live 1977, the his vocals and range is amazing.
Boys of Summer will always remind me of being a teenager in 80s Australia. A comparatively carefree time, with fantastic music from all around the world. Interestingly, Don's singing voice in all his well-known Eagles and solo songs is much higher than his speaking voice. He's definitely doing something different here.
Beth, This song is beautiful. Don is such a talent. a good drummer and a great songwriter & singer.... In this video I adore the piano and the slide on the guitar. A Deadhead sticker.. Howard has some good groups on his show!! Look for more, you will not be sorry!!! Such as Metallica or Bruce Hornsby. Both good videos!!!!!................ Check them OUT. I always liked the Eagles. Maybe it's just the title but the song seems like a subset of the Beach Boys. Regarding Tom Petty, my favorite will always be "Refugee"...there's so much power and soul in that song...a true rock classic!
This reminds me of a cover of Springsteen's Glory Days that Basia Bulat did for A/V Club's Undercover. Just her voice and her dulcimer, doing a beautiful, slower, more poignant version of the song.
Tom Petty rejected the tune Don wrote those iconic lyrics. A great version you should check out the live version they did in Melbourne in (I think) 2005. Steuart Smith on a telecaster (in this version he's sitting on Don's left playing an accoustic guitar.
Don Henley is a genius, with exceptional talent. That's a given. His voice needs no affirmation. (Glen Frey said "even I don't sing as much as I could - we have Don Henley")! His advancing narrative style of song writing/storytelling is a lesson in how it should be done. His drumming, while not in the "Steve Gadd/Drummer God" class, is exactly what the song needs (so perhaps, maybe, it is in that class). And then, there's The Last Resort. Glen Frey said that The Last Resort is the best song Don Henley ever wrote. I'm certain that's up for discussion, but it would take a strong arguement to prove him wrong. (Have a listen. React if you want, but really, just listen. It's a lesson in songwriting (and history), not so much a vocal lesson.Well ..) So this version is 3 tones down from the original. Who cares. His voice has aged. The song, and his delivery, hasn't. And, to me, that's all that matters. The older you get, the harder this song hits. I was 17 when this came out. Finally, RIP Randy Meisner. Another Eagle flies no more. Edited to add link to The Last Resort. Have a listen, reaction not necessary. ruclips.net/video/TLbUwXnhbv8/видео.html
This is a good version but I still prefer the original video with the eight-year-old kid pounding away at the drums!! And I like the faster beat in the original with all the sound production. This version has a much different mood as in laid back rather than driving up to the girl's door and she's not home and your heart speeds up!!
Grew up with The Eagles, and Henley has always very earnest about playing/singing well. A band maybe forgotten, but foundational for The Eagles, et al. (with a funny name) The Flying Burrito Brothers 🤔.
Last winter I found myself on the highway and in front of me was indeed a dead head sticker on a Cadillac. I hope the owner had placed it on there for the same reason I was excited to see it.
When President Obama awarded the eagles the metal of freedom award at the White House his exact words were ," the eagles have sold more records and albums than any other artist in the 20th century and that same a lot considering how much great music a musicians there were at that time". If you don't believe me you can watch it on RUclips and hear it right out of his mouth and I'm a huge eagles fan and I didn't have no idea about that stat
Beth, Don Henley tends to take down any of his stuff posted on RUclips. (Especially covers!) You might get away with this one because it's from Howard Stern's show. IDK.
I urge you to listen to Waiting in the weeds by The Eagles from Long Road Out Of Eden, now that is a beautifully written piece of poetry....Well worth a listen.
I think two of his best performances vocally are on Hotel California, but not necessarily the songs people think. Wasted Time and The Last Resort are both amazing showcases for Henley’s voice and I’d love to see a reaction/analysis for either/both.
I agree completely. Wasted Time is actually my favorites Eagles song (which is really hard to narrow down because there are SO MANY amazing songs in their catalog), but i feel like it is so emotional and gorgeous. And The Last Resort is a masterpiece that doesn’t get nearly the attention I think it deserves.
Tom Petty didn't reject this 'song'. He, the band and Mike Campbell didn't feel it was what they were doing at that time. The song, as in Don Henley's lyrics, gave the music track the nostalgic feel of late, late summer love at the coast. Perfect combination of music and lyric which would have been completely different if Tom Petty had written some lyrics, it wouldn't be this song.
babe, you gave your tell. before he ended his phrasing, you went gaga. you know the song, you know the instance, and you know don henley. not bad on you, but lets get real. he is amazing.
This version misses out on the ecstatic acceptance enunciated by the ending original guitar riff. Which ackonwleges both the uniquene and irrepaceable nature of what has passed, and a joyous acceptance of life's entangled joys and sorrows.

The song, as in Don Henley's lyrics, gave the music track the nostalgic feel of late, late summer love at the coast. Perfect combination of music and lyric which would have been completely different if Tom Petty had written some lyrics, it wouldn't be this song.
I admire Don Henley, and his life with Eagles. But if you want to see this song really rock check out the cover by The Ataris
You should do
Tom Petty
Here Comes My Girl.
Hey, this is good, but could you do a reaction to the studio version, music version of this.
Careful Beth. Don is pretty ruthless on what he feels is his copyright. Then again it's from Sterns show.
babe, you gave your tell. before he ended his phrasing, you went gaga. you know the song, you know the instance, and you know don henley. not bad on you, but lets get real. he is amazing.
That was done in a lower key than the original version
🌟
The Ataris made this song popular for me
This version to me is awesome - although it probably is hard as hell to sing backup to due to his cadence.
Good reaction. As for how Don Henley’s voice can sound better…I find that comical
oh Beth roar
Mike Campbell said Tom Petty never forgave him for letting Don Henley have that song….despite Tom shelving the music. Lol.
Good
I miss the hunting 80s synths of the original version that give you melancholy vibes.
Love his voice..one of ny favorites....bt his pettiness on copyright issues on YT majes him hard to like lol
This version misses out on the ecstatic acceptance enunciated by the ending original guitar riff. Which ackonwleges both the uniquene and irrepaceable nature of what has passed, and a joyous acceptance of life's entangled joys and sorrows.
I prefer the studio version.
You really should listen to the original version of this song. So much better.
PIENSO QUE EL SEÑOR HENLEY CANTA CON SENTIMIENTOS Y SIN LAS TECNICAS VOCALES ,ESTA VERSION ES MEJOR QUE LA ORIGINAL
