- These kids stopped me on their way home from school and asked me if they could "pet" Harry. They got more than they asked for! While Harry loves kids and has never hurt a kid, his shear size tends to overhwhelm them. Harry weighs 232 pounds and is pretty tall.

yeh, when i was young there was a huge labrador in the neighborhood. I was totally afraid of him, and ran away screetching whenever i saw him. Which he took as invitation to play and hunted me until his owner would call him back. Soooo scary!!

I had to explain to the neighbor hood kids that "chase" is a dog's favorite game; he's not coming after you to gobble you up, he just thinks you're playing with him when you run away.

Last year, a teacher brought her huge Newfoundland to the school. He was like a large black cloud of darkness. Everywhere the dog went, he attracted so much attention. He was so sweet and gentle. Despite he could easily immobilize anyone just by sitting on them. Course, there’s that whole thing about big dogs thinking their lap dogs.

RIP HARRY :( Newfoundlands, sadly, are very short-lived dogs (usually 7-10 years) so Harry has almost certainly crossed the rainbow bridge based on the upload date. RIP big boy.

Its because he might get too excited & playfully chase them & tackle them or jump on them. Although its innocent & playfully it can frighten the children & people will deem it as a big scary/dangerous dog :(
This is an example of what's called Convergent Evolution. When two completely different species of animals evolves similar traits and features and in this case Harry the adorable doggo has evolved into having a large fatty and furry body like that of a bear to keep warm from the harsh cold environment he lives in. And even though humanity may had a part in affecting his evolutionary line that can still lead to his DNA somewhat copying to that of bears.
They’re such good dogs. I had a friend who had two of them. Every once in a while they would try to “rescue” people who were just swimming and didn’t need help. They weren’t trained rescue dogs, it’s just a really strong instinct. My friend would just yell “ let him rescue you if you don’t mind” and the Newfie would just very gently pull them by their arm toward shore.

also they tend to go to the vet more. my dog was sort of a lab-boxer mix, he lived up to 15 years, when he just went letargic and died in his sleep. he never got sick

Why focus on the end? Much better to focus on the good life he most likely had. Everything is temporary, but that's what makes life so precious.

When I go out for a walk with my German Mastiff (great dane) I always get asked by people, expecially with kids, if my dog bites. I tell them that he is a good dog but only bites bad kids, those who don't do their homework or don't listen to the parents.
It always makes them laugh, try it.

My dog is big and fluffy and gets the same reaction from kids, she’s very overwhelming friendly (does not jump, just cuddles into you), I always get sad when she goes up to children to rub up against and they get scared , like they don’t know they missing out on the cuddling of a lifetime!!! the neighbor came really quick and took the dog off me, and she was apologizing profusely, the dog really behaves really well but cant resist mcdonalds cheeseburgers, which i had in the bag. The dog was this huge for ever happy looking teddy bear ^^ so i gave one of my burgers for the dog, and now a days pet him every time we see each other ^^

I pet a newfie named Maggie who was a rapid licker for a big dog. She had a little white on her. I met her when she was hardly a year old, but she was a big puppy that hadn't reached full growth yet.

So beautiful to hear children laugh and what a gentle giant! Looooove it. The world needs more of this simple joys of life. My kids have grown up too quickly. Both at varsity now, in their twenties.
I really wanted to get a newfoundland at one time, then I found myself reading advice from newfie owners describing the best way "to get drool off the ceiling." Decided I just wasn't up to that!
