- It's now time to get that #7 injector up and out of the engine and see what kind of fuel corrections it makes in the long term with the new fuel injector in place. Will it be the fix? Was it the correct approach? Time will tell... -Enjoy!

i had a 95 dakota for 15 years, sold it in 2015, always parked outside in minnesota. 99% rust free, it had one spot about the size of a quarter starting to bubble up on the bottom of the tailgate. Pretty impressed for a 20 yr old truck.
I'm guessing the view time on your videos is pretty high. No doubt it's in part due to your commentary. Your entertaining and include enough technical details that if any of us were to do this job we'd feel comfortable after watching. I hope 2018 brings many blessings to you and your family.
Hi Eric. Finally can give you a tip. On removing and installing those fuel injectors use carb cleaner instead of fluid film. They VERY easily pop out and install then without even loosing the o ring off the injector. You can thank me later as I wish to thank you now for all your quality, top notch video's! BTW - I'm Jeff, a techie from Wisconsin and really enjoy chasing any issue others can't find thru the years and SO much enjoy watching you doing the same!
I heard that works good for exhaust hangers too, although I always forget when I'm cussing up a storm trying to get them off. lol
😄🙄
I don't envy that northern winter. Lived in N Dakota. If I ever see snow again it will be too soon.
I never replaced a known good part. Who am I to spend my customers money. You made the right call on injector 5. I always let them know that it may be an issue down the road but ultimately it was their decision on replacement.
I have a 2008 Dodge Dakota with the 4.7L HO. It had a miss fire in cylinder 3. I took it to the Dodge dealership twice. All they could tell me is to change out the plugs and coil packs. They wanted almost a Thousand dollars to do it. I bought after market plugs and coil packs. Injectors, oxygen sensors, exhaust manifold, catalytic converters, fuel pump. I still had a misfire. Then I took it to this one mechanic. He was able to get factory OEM plugs and coil packs with labor for half the price. It fixed the problem. Spend the money and get Factory OEM plugs and coil packs. It will fix the problem. These car manufacturers have gotten cunning in there business. Now you have to get parts from them or it won't run right.
It has nothing to do with the OEM manufacturers being “cunning” and everything to do with the mass produced aftermarket junk coming out of every factory in China, Vietnam, Thailand etc.
Read an article on Repair Pal website stating that surging or bucking during acceleration can be attributed to a distributor that is moved or mis-indexed. This is a result of the cam and crank position sensors being out of synchronization. Wear of the oil pump drive gear may also cause similar symptoms because it allows excessive free play in the distributor drive. The distributor drive gear and bushing should be replaced if the rotor tip moves back-and-forth more than 3/16th of an inch when checking drive gear free play.
Great job on the diag for that dakota. Enjoy watching your videos and picking up tips and tricks. I've done everything on my vehicles for the past 10+ years aside from tires and alignments, so the extra knowledge comes in handy.
Keep the videos coming
Thank you man. I've been chasing a P0300 with similar symptoms for awhile now. I suspected an injector issue, but I never expected a bad injector to cause an entire bank to misfire. When I first got the truck, it had a p0305 and p0300 as well as a code for fuel level among other things. After replacing the fuel pump and plugs (both needed) and fixing the vacuum leaks, head gasket and replacing a leaking radiator this p0300 was all that was left haunting me. Truck would occasionally run beautifully getting 19 mpg on the freeway, but then it would start missing and drop down to 11 or so. I tested the coils more times and ways than I care to admit because intermittent usually means electronics. I used a stethoscope and screwdriver to listen to the injectors, and they were all ticking every time I checked (truck didn't idle that rough honestly). Sure enough, cylinder 5 injector was swollen down where you can't see it from the top. My guess is, some of the coolant from the leaking head gasket had caused the injector failure. Have a full set of injectors coming for mine though.
On a side note, anyone interested in buying an 02 Ram 1500 4.7 SLT? :P
As a mechanic I really enjoy watching your videos. I think I have watched most of them lol. Im goin to try out some of the Astro tools you use. Keep them coming so I can learn more
Not long after I started wrenching, somewhere around 1989 I bought an Astro 3/8" impact. It's not the most powerful one out there, but over the years I've used the crap out of it. It still works, and it's still my go to. Not all cheap tools are bad tools.
@DerrickCarter what would you suggest to resolve a P0132, P0300, P0301, and P0351 issue? My Dakota bucks, and stalls like the one in the video. It's a 98 with the 3.9 V6. I feel like all 4 codes are connected to one problem. Please help. Thank you.
I'm happy how you diagnose that truck, you give me a lot of imfortation about this kind of problem. I'm Randy a Mechanic from the Philippines.
You gotta have some incredible patients to become a mechanic ..I was getting frustrated just watching you . Great job !!!
Looks like you got it Dr. O. Always amazed by the fight a fuel rail and injectors can put up. That one gave up pretty easy. Thanks!
Thanks for bringing us along, Eric. Those super long craftsman picks come in handy sometimes.
Love them dog appearances too, We have three rescues here in central NY who interact the same way.
I truly enjoyed watching your videos on any dodge dakota truck. Please keep it up. Thank you.
I have the same issue, I will look at the fuel injectors, thanks for putting up your work, much appreciated from San Diego
Nice diagnosis! Sometimes you just have to go with what data the car gives you and the best diagnostic tool is the one on top of your shoulders...good call!!
Being as thorough as you are, I'm surprised you did not do that injector pulse test on Bank 2 for comparison. Maybe they were dropping less fuel pressure then Bank 1. And on top of that, who can really trust the "NEW" upstream Ox sensor as you mentioned this truck had one. Like they say, if you can do it, I can watch. Me thinks you nailed it Eric.
I recently pulled my 4.7l because the rear tabs on the transmission case were cracked. Thinking it was caused by worn engine mounts, I lifted the engine about 6” to replace the mounts and rusty oil pan. When pulling the wiring harness, a majority of the bank 1 injectors leaked at the rail. So I pulled the fuel rail to replace the o-rings. All of my bank 2 injectors had cracks in the plastic body. The engine ran fine. Since I noticed the fan clutch was leaking and one of the coils was corroded inside I stopped at a pull your parts to get a coil and clutch. I planned to pocket some injectors while I was at it. I pulled the injectors from three 4.7l engines and they were all cracked. I took the “best” four to keep as spares, but they turned out to be a different part number than my originals anyway. The plastic at the bottom was red as well instead of the white on mine. Anyway, I’m still running the originals with no issue. You got luckier than I on the rail bolts. I snapped the passenger rear one off and it’s a M10 instead of an M6 now. This all was a result of looking into why my referees lights weren’t working and checking the switch on the nv3500 trans. Of course I did the hanger bearing and u-joints while I was at it.
Hi Eric, thanks forr your time and dedication.
A snap throttle/rapid decel while scoping secondary may well detect the overfueling injector. The snap on lineal cop adapter allows for a parade pattern on this enginne easily. Maybe you could check the #5 injector that way if the car was to come back. Friendly greetings.
Quite a traffic jam you got there Eric.
Ur videos have helped me narrow my problem to injectors thank you
as a fellow RUclips creator -- I love your channel -- And wanted to let you know that I was able to fix my truck and help others out too. Thanks so much , me truck run's perfect now thanks for your info and videos from Rays apartment maintenance.
Total mechanic genius love watching your videos man keep it up Boss
Hi Eric, watch Ivan telling us he's leaving the motor trade, that's a shame I know you Guys are good mate's and like to bounced off one another from time to time, e.g. the Hyundai camshaft twisted, a wee bit sad, but I'm sure we all wish him, all the best, anyway cheers buddy and happy new year again
kenneth Tonner
Knowing Ivan, he will still try and make videos of these assembly systems he will be working on. Problem is with so much corperate epionage, I doubt his new employer would allow it.
I replaced the intake manifold on my Explorer 4.6L V8 a couple years ago and while it wasn't a difficult job, the only hard part was getting those 8 fuel injectors out. I can't tell you how long I struggled with those guys. I think that alone may have been half the time of the whole job lol.
I like your two Huskies. We had two of the same color. Really nice dogs, but shed a dog daily as well.
Great instruction Video on how injectors affect fuel trim!
the o-rings hanging/leaking afterwards is exactly why most shops sell it as a set of injectors with all new o-rings :)
Cool. Thanks Eric. Looking forward to the update video.
I have a 1995 Dakota 3.9 Magnum engine that is brand new. I installed it last fall it has about 10.000 miles now. When the engine was put in every sensor and injectors plugs wires belts everything under the hood is new. I was having a serious problem after the engine warmed up sputtering and shaking while under power. No check engine light was on. To make long story short the crank position sensor was bad even though it was new. I changed it on advise of a friend and now my truck runs as it should. I hope this helps Dodge Dakota people.
I'd bet at some time during cold weather, water in the fuel ended up in that injector, froze, swelled and cracked it. I've seen throttle body injectors blow out big time that way. More stuff they never see in the south! Also, it's possible that cylinder is a little washed out and not sealing properly. I guess I would have made sure the oil was good too, especially if it sees a lot of short trips in the winter.
Eric, wanted to relate a rich running case I saw on a GDI engine where the high pressure mechanical pump was driven off the camshaft. So bad the engine fuel management was maxed out trying to correct a rich condition and so bad you could smell raw fuel at the oil cap and also oil level overfull. Well long story short, the hi pressure fuel pump backside shaft was leaking raw fuel right into the engine. Somehow these fuel pumps should have a design where that leaking fuel is detected and also routed back internally to the fuel tank instead of into the engine.
thanks for sharing these videos! I learn a lot from them. regards!
I'm not sure about New York or any other state for that matter...but here in California they'll pass smog even with the Evap Monitor incomplete. Have a Good 2018 Eric 🅾️
Not sure where you live in California but I they failed me for the EVAP with no check engine light
May depend on model year of vehicle, many places are more tolerant with early OBD-II vehicles.
In Massachusetts if the vehicle is 15 years or older there's no emissions testing only a safety check but if you are getting emissions test you can have 1 monitor incomplete and it will still pass
jason hernandez I'm in the Los Angeles County. I passed all my cars without the Evap monitor complete. 🤔
Robert Hancock true, it might depend on the shop too.
A little swipe of silicone grease on the fuel injector O-rings will make it much easier to install and later remove them.
Love the drive cycle portion. I deal with emissions too. I'm quite certain on the Dodge products that the o2 heater sets after you drive it, with most accessories on possible especially if there is a rear window defrost, then the next morning it will complete. Great job. And one more thing indiana will let you pass if the evap monitor is incomplete without any codes.
Great one Eric o happy new year 🎊
Nice work on the diag the fuel Trims look pretty good now I do agree could have used the Cylinder 5 injector also but looks a ton better since the 7th injector was changed out much better then it was Eric O @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
I had to replace an injector on my last car and I agree that pulling the fuel rail out and getting it back in a PIG of a job.
Great job again like always
Yeah I always lube my injector before sliding it back in the hole, good advice.
lol lol Always better if lube is required.
its amazing how fast you work at 1.5 playback speed.
Fixed! SWEEEEEEET! That'll at least get him through the winter. After this year's salt bath, off to the crusher she'll go, I'd imagine.
Shortest comment ever for me today - I've got a couple generators, and a snowblower to repair this morning. Everyone's in panic mode with that storm rolling up the coast here. Wife had to fight mobs at the grocery store - all the milk and bread was gone! LOLOL They were also out of my Arizona sweet tea, so I'm not starting this day off very well ... I'm kinda mad! Grrrrr !! :D
crusher, the best place for chrysler/dodge/moparts ;))
Smitty Smithsonite
Thats why we PREP! You cant eat bullets and gold bullion.
Yeah man, I was a butcher in a supermarket for 17 years, and it never ceased to amaze me how much crap people will buy before a storm. It's not like it's 1860 and you might die of lack of provisions.
Giggiyygoo
Yup... Cheee balls and diet coke. Gotta have um.
And the weirdest thing to me was how much meat people bought. If you were planning for the worst case scenario, power out for days, no clear roads and all that, why on earth would you be loading up on steaks and pork chops? And the people got mad at you and asked why you're out of everything as if they didn't notice the swarms of people all around them
@SouthMainAuto I have a 98 Dakota 3.9 V6 with a similar problem. Truck runs fine until I shut it down, then restarts super easy. After restarting and driving around a little bit it starts bucking, and stalls. My fuel economy is so far down that I can't see it, and the last OBD II scan showed me a P0132, P0300, P0301, and P0351. Ignition coil is brand new, so I'm not sure why the 0351 is still showing. Please tell me anything you can think of that may help me. Thanks.
I believe there was a tsb released on those fuel rail bolts
It’s states you
1. cold soak the engine overnight.
2. Then spray with wd 40. Let sit over night.
3. Come in, turn 1/4 and spray with wd 40. Let sit overnight
Repeat step 3 at 1/4 turn intervals until bolts come out.
Nandor
Sounds like some B.S Ford would suggest to bring in more money to its dealers. 😒
Grew work yet again! Thanks for the excellent videos!
Hello Eric, Did you video the replacement of the sub frame shown in your walk through the shop? I can't find it and thought it would be interesting. Take care. Doug
that was one cool prybar you was using
Great job fixing the Dodge. When do we get videos of fixing the Hondoo?
*@**0:55* "And Mrs. O. being gone" sounds ominous and horrible... did she leave you for the Snap-On Guy, or catch you with the Ice Cream Girl? It just sounded awful the way you said it.
Here is another occasion where the injector does not leak as in flooding the engine. But sprays more fuel than ordered to by the pcm. Nice tips on the drive cycle. When passing smog in Calif., the evap monitor is the only one that doesn't have to complete.
Other videos around including Matt's show that an injector drop test will have virtually identical readings across a bank of good injectors. They have a tolerance spec but in practice they are all exactly the same.
"One handed reach around" - classic!
No wonder the computer was having trouble, i think that injector was slighty buggered LOL :-D., the computer coped quite well really.
That was a bit fiddle getting that bugger out Eric old Jimmy W Aust
One number five injector and a good smoke test , but great video nun the less .
Often it's about finding the most economically viable fix for the car. Like a work truck that's on its last legs, just do the minimum necessary to keep it running.
opl500
Yeah! Its sad that no matter what, these salt belt cars are destined to the scrapper. In Texas, even a rust free Dakota will fetch its weight in gold.
seems like right call, with state of truck and trim results the 1 injector good enough .
One more flakey mess off your yard lol .
Great work Eric, It's a shame the salt claims so many cars and trucks before their time. Rust is the last thing I worry about on my '95 F150 here in Chesapeake, VA
Dennis Wilkinson
Same here is west Texas. Still see 80's Chevy's and Ford's bombing down the road. Not so much for Dodge truck though. I think they came rusted from the factory in the 80's and 90's. 😂
It's so much easier to just pull the intake plenum and pull the CPs. Move the PVC and the plugs off the TB and move the two coolant lines and you have a ton of room. It takes 10 minutes. Saves you soooo much frustration.
Great stuff as usual Mr Eric sir, what was the outcome of the on screen text in part 1 with the fuel pressure gauge? Should the gauge have been less "boucey" (aka more stable) in its reading IF all was well?
I wonder what is causing those injectors to split their casings. I have the same vehicle (just bought it) and it's running so rich that it won't even idle right. over -30 on short terms. Every one of my injectors has a crack right down it with rusty color behind it. New full set of injectors is in the mail of course. Pulled my fairly new plugs and every plug is thick black except 2 and 7 which are white. Anyways, hopefully a new set of injectors makes her purr again. But question still remains, how do these things split their cases, and what does that do internally to the injector? Aside from visually indicating how old and worn it is, I thought the plastic was just an external (cosmetic) sheath?
Eric, how it goes! I am hoping you can help me as i am in a real jam...my 98" Durango 5.9 just today blew the 50 amp ignition / starter fuse in the PDC. Didn't know until returning home ...while driving (abs light, airbag light illuminated, and the windows are stuck down, and the heater/ac controls do not work ) found it replaced it and it blew again! I have had weird instances only when the engine was warm after driving and then re-starting (i.e stopping at the store ) when turning the key to start it would crank , hesitate, (like lose power for a split second) and then start...and or it would start super quick like with no crank, just vroom and start!
research is showing me a short somewhere, but could the starter and or the Solenoid just be bad? Any insight at all would be greatly appreciated, the truck is stuck at the bottom of driveway with windows down (luckily no rain for a day or so hopefully) but I need to figure this out and quick!
I did do the heater core last year and had the dash down but not out all the way (steering column was dropped) out! Is it possible I damaged a wire up there on the column harness? The truck is about 70% restored as I have put 14 G into it the last 5 years, so it is in pretty good shape overall! I have a used new motor in it w 105K from a rusted out dakota, but the engine didn't have much if any rust! This was 4 years ago as well and have not had any issues other than that random starting thing! The truck has 325K so assuming the starter is the original could it going bad be the issue?!
Thanks in advance brother!!
Dennis
The old reach a round nice 😆
As I recall from GM service information, if the pressure drop between all injectors is within 1.5 psi, the injectors are good. I don't know if Chrysler's specs are any different. I'd say the #5 injector is OK to continue in service.
Now that I have the Autel scan tool and PicoScope, extended family and neighbors bring me their sick cars (word travels fast) .. so far is somewhat “Hmmm Interesting” learning how to use my stuff on different vehicles.
Great lesson as always. Thanks teach!
Happy new year .
Nice find , I'm assuming you can do the same test with the Verus ?
I have a 2005 Dakota with the same problem. Seems to be the norm for this truck. I get P0300, P0172, P1129, codes. I get rid of one and another pops up. It’s seemingly never ending. I did learn one thing though, use Mopar OEM replacement parts for your 02 sensors. Bosch sucks!
heads to the recycle bin? that's a good one.
Traffic looks brutal up there. Did the one truck in front of you keep moving?? Happy New Year!!!
Love the way the Girls behaved after you shouted at them.
Good video Eric whats the part number for the tool you used to pry up the injector rail
That looks like a Dodge mini van on the lift. 2 Dodge's in the shop, at once? Say it aint so! 😂
welcome to South Main Chrysler channel :))
Mr. O do you tell your customers, that you made a RUclips video of the repair of their car.
Eric what brand are those t handle nut drivers you got. I have to have them. Great vid.
Thanks for the video. So in NY a vehicle will pass inspection with through holes in the body?
I'm guessing for a body-on-frame vehicle, if it doesn't have holes open into the cab area it's considered cosmetic.
When I was much younger living in Maine any through holes anywhere on the vehicle would be an instant inspection fail.
I thought it was going to be 4.7 headgasket curse. Injector is much better
Mike, I have a friend who has that motor. What signs or symptoms should I tell him to look for on that particular motor?
@@LA_Commander engine will start using coolant and plugs come out bleach white
@@mikefedele4521 thanks for the tip. Also, he pulled his spark plug once and showed it to me. Had some oil residue on the threads. But the electrode looked ok. Anything there?
where did you find the T handle would love to have one thanks
Great job !!
That pulse test you did with injectors...seems like the computer could have done it on its own. Maybe in more modern vehicles?
saulns some scan tools can do that with some cars.
Yep, there's those thumbs down from Mr. Bad Business Practices in NC.
Hey Eric, Do you like using that OTC scanner? How does it compare to the Autel?
A good visual inspection is worth a hour of diagnosis 👀
-6's are good enough. It my practice to never fix everything all perfect on a Chrysler product or they come back with something new broke expecting more.
Dodges love the south main auto shop lol
Wait a minute.... a Dodge Dakota still around in your neck of the woods?? Just how old is this video?
LoL, lol...
So, did it get a fresh yellow sticker? Looks like he skipped the Grey sticker altogether
Eric how much time did you charge for the diagnosis and what is the rate?
Chances are you have a dirty injector. Them theres are expensive to replace. You had one bank already removed and a proper job would have been to remove all injectors and do a bench injector cleaning. Alternately have the customer run a few bottles of techron before blasting the injector.
know any good speaker replacement videos and on my 1998 Dakota the eltEric locks dont work im not to worried as it is a 5 speed and most folks nowadays dont know how to operate them
What do you think of the evolve? Is it comparable to snap on or autel?
What actron scanner is that? Can it plug into my 2000 F250 Powerstroke and actually read the computer?
You do know those rails are notorious for leaking I'm nervous watchn you prying on it 😱😱😱😱😱
I'm sssuming the fuel pressure gauge wasn't bouncing around after the rerpai?
I see you using that classic reach around trying to get that #7 injector into the hole. Have you ever just tried talking dirty to the vehicle to see if that will work:)
I have a 2006 Dakota 4.7L It had a misfire in cylinder 1. After spending thousands of dollars trying to fix it. Replaced the CPU, exhaust manifold, , catalytic converter, sensors. Change the sparks plugs, coil packs, fuel pump 2 or 3 times. One new fuel tank. The remedy was: Wait for it........ Factory Mopar Coil packs and spark plugs from the dealership. It seems that the manufacturers are building their products so you have to buy replacement parts from them. I guess they want to eliminate auto parts stores. SMDH
Fat, cracked and swollen? Sounds like my ex. I'm here all week folks...try the steak *and buy SMA merchandise.*
Fat, cracked and swollen is how I feel about coming back to work after the new years...
1. I feel your pain in that. 2. Your cat resembles mine. :)
Question is your state have restrictions on years for owning vehicles. I thought you said it had 1 year left before it goes into the recycle bin
RUST❗
