  • Hey guys! I’m Brad, and I make how-to videos. I do custom painting projects, guitar painting, airbrushing, spray can painting, wood working, and a variety of other finishing work and tutorials. Please subscribe and check out my channel for more!
    IMPORTANT: Since the filming of this video, candy paint has become available in spray can format.
    This video shows a new technique that I came up with for painting a form of ghost flame with spray cans. Obviously you can achieve superior results using proper spray equipment, but this is still a fun an interesting technique to try out.
    Hopefully this technique will open up some possibilities for ghosting effects for anyone who is restricted to doing their spraying with cans.
    The paints that I use in this video are made by Rustoleum. Other brands such as Krylon, Tremclad, Molotow, or others can be used as long as you can find a translucent colour that meets your needs.
    Candy paints, which are completely transparent, are now available. House of Kolor carries a high quality version. They refer to them as Kandy.
    You will be able to achieve superior results as demonstrated on the reverse of the panel if you become proficient with an airbrush and paint gun. The back of the panel was painted using AutoAir and PPG paints, as well as a Devilbiss paint gun and Iwata airbrush.
    The process for achieving this kind of effect with spray cans involved creating a high contrast image using a dark background and light foreground, or the opposite. Next you paint over it with a semi-transparent colour such as the rustoleum metallic paint that I used in this video. I chose the racing green colour, and used it as the background as well. You can also just do your image in black and white and then go over it with your top colour.

      Your welcome. I do a lot of rattle can painting at work and was always curios on the limits of the rattle can paint. Pretty good at blending the chrome paint with the actual chrome, I build chrome engine parts buy the way. Plus paint the engine parts too with auto enamels. Production type work.

      +Brad Angove hi, i have a question, can you paint real fire/flames with this technique without an airbrush? and if so how do you blend it? thank you i' m sorry if this question was too dumb but i want to make sure it can have the same effects ? -and if you can a tutorial would be very much helpful and greatly appreciated,since i'm going to use something like this for my exams- ..-btw I'M Sorry i hope i'm not forcing you or anything- great video and thanks again!

      +Park Chanyeol btw what kind of paper would you recommend to spray with? thank you

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  9 лет назад

      I really don't think you would be able to get a passable true-fire using this technique. It would require many very expensive paint cans, and you would have difficulty getting the appropriate detail for that sort of effect.
      I use a flexible cardboard sheet to direct my paint. Poster board tends to work quite well.

      Thanks for your comment doodr. If you take a look at some of my more recent work, I make it more clear that a mask is necessary. I sometimes don't wear one when filming portions of my videos when I'm trying to explain things while spraying, but I always encourage others to use protection. I used to assume that people already knew that, but I've started harping on it more lately.

    Rustoleum's colorshift paint is designed to go over a black base. It would create an interesting effect in this situation, but if you mean to use it instead of the green it won't be much of a ghosted effect. It doesn't really show up over white.

    • @BradAngove

      The taped pattern would definitely give a different effect, and would be much easier to control particularly for beginners. Another option for the freehand method would be to purchase better caps for more control.

    I was at the drag strip at night, walked by a '69 Malibu painted a dark blue metallic, then the light angle changed and red metallic sparkles followed the body lines as I walked.
    But then when I got to the front the hood and front fenders had color-shift ghost flames that would appear and vanish, only seen at certain angles ! I was transfixed, kept walking around this car looking into the paint !

    thats pretty cool. ive always wanted to do the front of a car with a kind of pin stripe flame but have the rest of it filled with a clear glow in the dark paint to where at night while your driving and the hood is warm the whole front of your car would have a glow n the dark flame only visible at night.

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  7 лет назад +1

      That would be pretty wild. I shouldn't be all that difficult either if you use a heat sensitive paint.

    • @crystal5322

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  7 лет назад

      I don't really have the resources to do that at the moment, but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work exactly how you described it. Just be careful to note the difference between a paint that glows in the dark, and a paint that becomes luminescent because of heat.

    • @crystal5322
      @crystal5322 7 лет назад

      is there a big difference in the two. ?i dont really know to much about different paint i figured it was all kind of the same .kinda like glow in the dark toys. you can warm them up in your hands and they glow.

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  7 лет назад

      That must be a different kind than I'm accustomed to. My glow in the dark stuff kind of absorbs light and then emits it. It's not based on heat unless I'm mistaken.

    Hi Brad, Love the flames you do but at the start of your video you show which I believe is some of your work. Its the shot of 3D ghost flames that change as you walk (scan) by. I have a 1974 Ford Ranchero that I think the realistic flames would make a statement, but what would put it apart from the rest is if I use the changing flames. I like the way the flames change from one angle to the next. Can you do this to where the flames just don't change but slowly change to one or more different colors. Please let me know
    Again love your work. Hope to hear back from you. David C. and my 74

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  8 лет назад +2

      Hi David. I think you're probably referring to the metal art in my intro. Correct me if I'm wrong. I've got a few other videos on various pieces of metal art, but that always shifts it's appearance as you change angle the way you've seen in the video.
      It's possible to do a flame with colour shifting paint which will change colour or hue as you change it's angle. It would likely be a ghost style flame though.

    • @strokerjoe1
      @strokerjoe1 8 лет назад +1

      Hi again Brad,
      I didn't think this thread would get to you or not, Thanks for the reply. The part I'm talking about is about the 6th shot in on your intro where you do a walk by and I'm sorry my bad, its called metal art work not flames and you show it again at the end where you show it again one of the 4 squares at the end of the intro of your work and the one i'm talking about is in the top left corner. I guess what I want to do is to do that in flames or ghost flames (3D ghost flames) making a transition of colors. It's a bit tricky or not. All of the elements and techniques seem to be their. But in any case the one you do show is remarkable to me. Can you help, Thanks lots David C.

      Hi David. I'm not 100% sure that I know how to do what you're looking for specifically, but I could be misunderstanding what you're after just a bit. Can you email me this question at brad.angove@gmail.com please. I think that would be a better way to discuss it.

    Ya I think I have the concept of ghost flames different in my head. Ha, but just krylon paints. So gloss black. And you should try and search us on Facebook. Me and a buddy of mine buy and flip mini bikes. Bigger motors, we stretched one. And I do the paint on the fenders.... Check it all out!!! All done with spray cans. "Cmb. Custom mini bikes of arizona"

      Will do. You guys should look into some more professional spray equipment if you do this for a living. Then you could achieve the effect that you're talking about using candy paints or custom mixed pearls. Those types of things are beyond the reach of spray can jobs.

    Good luck. If you can't find any you can buy panels from coast airbrush and from chicago airbrush supply, but you should be able to get a better price elsewhere.

    That's pretty cool even for rattle cans. Could have been cool using air brushes during the Great Guitar build off. I think that would have gone big. Would have been hard to beat a triple neck Wonder Guitar but would have given them a run for their money.

      I strongly considered it. If that piece of wood hadn’t been so nice I probably would have.

  • @YknotLearnall
    @YknotLearnall 5 лет назад

    Unfortunately, the rattle cans produced very distinct spray lines despite the fact you sprayed in both directions for to the round pattern of the nozzle. A change to an oval pattern nozzle wood help there significantly.
    Side B looks great! Very sweet effect. 😀👍

    The white border you show at the end looks awesome! Do you have a video on that? That frame would look sick as a guitar paint job.

      The jagged silver border? That was an old experiment I did messing around with versions of the torn metal effect that I used on my most recent guitar series.

    Awesome. Thank you! I just can't wait to start using my airbrush. I got a badger 105 patriot. What do you use for test panels?? I'm honestly using like smooth gift boxes lol the one yr I'm happy to get a lot of clothes for Christmas!

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  10 лет назад

      Nice airbrush choice. I use dibond (sign material) typically. Sometimes I use pieces of steel or aluminum too. The dibond is sold as airbrushing panels at some places. That's funny about the christmas boxes.

    very cool, I'm not a painter and no nothing about paint but thinking about trying it on small projects for fun. wonder about the choice of white paint, would using a pearl white have any different effect on the look of it or would the metallic just cover that up and just show the white. got the idea from a friends HD, it has a gold pearl white paint on it..

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  8 лет назад +1

      +gonzosc1 Pearl white is very nice, but I doubt that you would notice much of a difference in this case. The metallic colour that I put over it has it's own pearl, which gives the white that sparkling look in the end regardless. I'm using the white exclusively for contrast in this specific paint job.

    hello I know you do a lot of spray paint videos and I will be using one of your ideas the chameleon paint job on my Jackson rebuilt but do you have any videos on rewiring I'm putting in new pickups and replacing all the wiring with wire harness and I was wondering if you had videos on that thank you I'm also going to be installing a Floyd Rose where there was not one so some of this is going to be real new to me and videos always help me out so much

      My most recent video actually includes me replacing my wiring, but I didn’t put out much info on that aspect I suppose. I’ll go more in depth on the next one.
