@rnoff ive had mine for about 5 years now and i still play everything at max and never had a single issue aside from having to reset the CMOS battery one time about 3 years ago. For a portable rig this thing is everything you will hope for it to be aside from maybe gpu not being able to be upgraded
Also please note, removing that sticker (in most cases) DOES NOT VOID WARRENTY. Consumer laws, at least european laws, state that a consumer should be able to reach the harddrive without voiding warrenty. They tried to play this void warrenty card on me (I believe I was connected to someone in Poland) when I needed a new fan and I hit them with the consumer laws, shut them up real fast and got that fan (free).
my 4k display conked out a few months ago. Its been really hard for me to get a new one in the middle east. MSi customer care has been very quiet on the subject, even after calling their local service centre in Dubai and globally emailing them. I'm quite disappointed, to say the least. I'm using it at the moment connected to an external display. I will be upgrading the storage though. Very informative video. Thank you.
I have the model with a GTX 1080 and I love it. I’ve had it for about a year and a half and it’s as fast as it was new. I got a great deal on it from newegg for $2100.
If the 16GB of ram is soldered on the underside of the motherboard then it could only be upgraded to 48GB max ram. I took apart an MSI GT75VR Titan Pro and flipped the motherboard over and the ram was not soldered to the motherboard. The customer wanted to upgrade the two 8GB sticks to 4 16GB sticks which I was able to do since it wasn't soldered. The GT75 is almost identical to the GT73 and I don't believe the ram is soldered and I'm 95% sure that there are two slots on the bottom of that board. It's almost guaranteed that there are slots because in the tech specs for the GT73VR it says ram is expandable to 64GB. If for some reason you are correct and two 8GB sticks are soldered to the board they only make 16GB max sticks and since you can only expand the ram in this laptop, if the 8GB sticks are soldered, with two more 16GB sticks it would equate to be (16*2)+(8*2)=48 not 64. I also came here to see the hard drive heat sink removed as well as the heat pipes on the GPU. Unfortunately you didn't unscrew anything although you are the first to point out that the laptop only has 2 NVME slots and one SATA III slot from about 15 videos on this laptop. Most have been ignoring the writing right on the motherboard and saying that the laptop has three NVME slots.
I also need to upgrade my storage capacity but I’ve never done this before and I prefer to add more instead of just replacing one of the existing storage devices. In the video he showed 3 PCI slots with only 1 free. The other 2 are 2x 128GB SSD (= 256GB) if I’m correct!? So I can add 1 more SSD, right? If that’s correct, do I need to look for certain “versions” (he mentioned sata 3 (free) and nvme (2x128gb)). I’d guess I need a Sata 3 SSD then? I hope you can help me with some answers so I can make sure I get this right.
@@GermanKickboxer Or not to. Sata is kinda slow, and costs the same as the nvme. You'd be better of an external 1tb nvme, put that into a thunderbolt enclosure. Mirror your os to the external nvme, then swap the cards, set bios to ahci /fake raid worth nothing but makes you unable to install linux/, and you'll have a 1tb and a 128gb nvme, and a lightning fast pendrive :-) At least that's what I am planning....
Working on a this model now, On the main board, right above the empty (disk) socket, under the heat-pipes there is a 12 pin header labeled HDD2, and it seems one can get a flex making it a sata+power connector, but can't find any bay to fit the actual disk in. Will report back or make a video on installing a 5tb 15mm thick disk there.
But there's an extra mxm slot under the heatpipes. Take a closer look at the photo from your own review: www.notebookcheck.net/fileadmin/_processed_/csm_gt73_30_2a325091cc.jpg
actually no... see the big black block there... that gets removed and there's a second slot near the fan.. and yes.. the fan's heat pipe configuration is different for SLI setup.

I've put the print of that email in the box, to ensure the techs will know why it's broken, but ultimately - it was fine.. I also included note that disks are encrypted, please don't format, it's not malfunction or smh.
@@yingliliu1166 Not worth it. The second gpu costs as much now as the laptop itself. Even if you get a second gpu, it does not come with the heatpipes, which are very rarely found for sale. Not to forget that you'll need another beefier power supply. So it will set you back with way more than the cost of your whole laptop, and the added value is a few hundred euro, for a 1000+euro expense.
Actually I do believe you can upgrade the GPU's or theoretically at least. It's quite involved though from what I've been able to gather. Pascal is going to be around for a while. So as long as they don't change much as far as the power system & pin connectors go. Should be possible but we'll just have to wait and see. There actually is an SLI version of this but it's quite spendy. Beautiful system though, just saying.
True, all you need to do is remove your gpu fan, remove the gpu heatsink and you can see the GPU card which is held in place by 2 5mm bolts. You can take it right out and replace it with something else, only problems is finding a GPU that actually fits the slot as they are not that easily available for consumers. Saw one on American Ebay €500 dollar for a RTX 2080. But the performance difference is kinda neglible imo (10-15%). You would also need to mod the NVIDIA driver files every time you install a new driver as well.
So you are saying I void my warranty if I want to upgrade the 16GB system to 32GB, or if I want to upgrade the Hard Disk or SSD? That seems like an asinine marketing decision! I would never buy a machine that I could not upgrade and I would never pay the premium that MSI charges to get the 32GB and larger disk option version of this system. Also I was wondering about the 4K uhd display option. Is there any real point on a 17" display? You would need a microscope to see anything unless you scale. The 1080P also runs at 120hz @ 5ms and costs a couple hundred dollars less.

My GT72 also has a second hdd bay thats empty with no connectors to actually attach anything, its just an empty space such a shame they could have at least put another subwoofer in there or something
I love my GT73 but the inability to upgrade the pre-installed RAM under the keyboard without a major breakdown sucks. Has anyone tried installing two 32GB RAM cards in the accessible bottom card slots to utilize 64GB of system RAM?
what do you need 64GB RAM for???, I mean, if I think of upgrading my laptop, besides adding SOME ram... in my case (I have a GT73 with a GTX 1080 and I added a 16GB Stick to it so I have 32GB and it proved to be more than enough), I would definately go for a CPU/GPU upgrade if even possible... there are some laptops that allow you to change the CPU or even the GPU just as if it was a desktop computer, I mean, some laptops do have one or both of em as a chip inserted into a socket instead of being directly soldered to the motherboard so you can easily either replace em if for any particular reason they broke (hard to believa that could happen unless you crank it up too much with overclocking), or even put some newer an more powerfull CPU/GPU in there. In such case, the only thing I would be concerned of is the cooling because the stock coolers may be enough for the CPU/GPU that comes with the computer but if you change those or at least one of em, for a more powerful one that gets hotter, the stock fan may just not be powerfull enough to keep the CPU/GPU below some dangerously high temperatures and you may endup with a "fried" laptop...

#NotebookcheckReviews But which model to get ???? GT73VR 6RE TITAN or GT73VR 6RE TITAN SLI or GT73VR 6RF TITAN PRO ???????????? What is best for gaming ????
i had the msi gt73vr 6rf, the spec is i7 6820hk wih gtx1080, 32gb ram, 120hz 1080p screen and 512gb m.2 pcie ssd. i swapped out the factory 1tb hdd for samsung 850 pro ssd, the stock hdd were ok but i prefer ssd tho. I bought it 3 days ago, been testing out with the benchmarks and game, what i can tell is this model equipped with gtx1080 is fantastic, i can run all AAA title in ultra settings over 120fps. Overwatch, battlefield 4, battllefront is the only games i able to test on my computer because it takes some time to download other games from my slow internet. When testing with these games online, the temperature for the graphics card average around 82 degree celsuis, with a max temp of 85 only. while cpu temp were slightly different from each game, overwatch hanging around 76 celsius, while battlefield and battlefront around 80 celsius. Benchmarked with 3d mark and the highest temperature the laptop can go is only 85 degree celsius for gpu, and 86 for the cpu. The fan speed was in auto mode during the benchmark and gaming, if i turn on the cooler boost the temp will go even much lower to 69for gpu and 67 for cpu. I'm still testing with the new laptop with some tweaking, the onl weird thing about this laptop is the benchmark result i get after i installed all the games, the first benchmark score i got is around 15k for fire strike score, but yesterday i tested it once again it dropped to 14k, far behind the asus laptop that has exact same spec with the gt73, which scoring around 16k. i think its some software issue that i had to fix, perhaps its the ssd calibration i messed up earlier.Overall this laptop is quite impressive, if you want a slightly future proof laptop that can handle AAA title games on max setting with 1080p for the following years, this laptop with gtx 1080 is a good choice. solid performance, good cooling, fast and responsive with the 3gb/s ssd, and the amazing 120hz screen that will makes you never want to go back to 60hz. keep in mind that if you purchased this laptop, the first thing you want to do it get rid of the norton anti virus software, office 365 and other bloatware that will slow the computer down.
There will be 2 generations of Video Card upgrades available according to MSI for this laptop. But you will have to purchase a laptop video card upgrade as it will not use a full size pc video card, it will only use a MXM 3.0 form factor or similar video card.
Do you have any idea if it can handle 128GB RAM (4x32gb)? And any video about reaching the 2 slots that are under the keyboard??? 4 years later, watching in the Titan ;)
@@Koolitari I confirm .. I bought 2x32 GB, put them in the 2 accessible slots, with the 2 other slots (above the motherboard) filled with the original 2x8 GB. It recognizes 80 GB, but the 16 are "Hardware reserved".
Is there a way to make the 3rd SATA m.2 slot to recognize a PCIe? I tried plugging one into it and it doesn't even shows up on BIOS and there's no way to change on BIOS any setting to specify the connector type
I just discovered that only 2 of the 4 sodimms are accessible with the back off. the other two are on the other side of the mother board so you have to take the entire mother board out to get to them!!! What a crap ass design! so if you get the 16GB version you can only safely upgrade to 32GB without doing major and VERY dangerous disassembly of the machine! By the way under the heatsync to the left of the battery is you mechanical sata and on top of that are 2 nvme m.2 ssd slots for a pair of mirrored ssds. The 16GB version I got only has 1x256GB nvme m.2 SSD. As a bonus I discovered to the left of the 2 nvme sockets is a m.2 sata socket for an m.2 sata ssd. I am still waiting to here back from msi if I can use that along with the mechanical disk to make a 1x m.2 sata 1TB, 2x nvme m.2 ssd in a RAID, and a 1TB mechanical SSD. But what is really bumming me out is I have 4x 16GB pc4 19200 2400Mhz ddr4 sodimms but I cannot use them without being able to get to the sodimms on the front side of the mobo. Speaking to MSI I was told those are socketed and not soldered but getting to them is taking a tremendous risk of damaging the machine and having a $3500 door stop!
you could upgrade to 48 GB by adding 2 x 16GB, and honestly you will not need more than 32 total or even 48, you are fooling yourself if you believe you need above that
Would you make add the information about how to get the other RAMs it installed? I want to full upgrade this laptop but I can't find the RAM that MSI installed.
Yes, the last 2 ram slots are between the keyboard and the motherboard, so I removed everything included the monitor to get those ram out. After the installation, my laptop was lagging randomly while gaming. I reinstall the windows and all problems solved.
[Chippy] My feeling on this is that if they put stickers on, you might have more stress if something goes wrong and it gets sent back. Just be aware. Different countries will have different laws on this and it's possible that this sticker is only intended for certain markets (but they put it on every product anyway.)
You're wrong. All GT73VR Titan Pro's have G-Sync 120Hz TN Panels apart from the 4K ones. They just don't advertise G-Sync. But All the 1080p 120Hz GT73VRs have G-Sync.
Where did I say they didn't...I said G-Sync was an option and available on both the 4K IPS displays and the 120Hz TN displays. Even the non Pro GT73VR have the TN 120hz 17.3" FHD display. I personally have the GT73VR Titan Pro 4K, but even the non pro models have the 120Hz TN display with G-sync.
Can you install a GTX 1080 in this model? Or does the Titan Pro have better cooling? I am going to buy this laptop and, if it's possible to upgrade to 1080, then it'll also be possible to upgrade to 1180 when it comes out.
Yes the 6RF model has the 1080 and it will be upgradeable but don't think you can upgrade into sli because you need an additional power supply and adapter for that
but does the 6RF model have the same cooling as the one with the 1070? I don't want to upgrade to SLI, I just want to make sure the cooling is the same on both so that I'm not restricted to a 1170 when it's out, I want a 1180.
+Lunielle as far as I have seen its only a difference of a few heat pipes they still have 3 fans hence the name cooler boost titan on majority of the newer models
Normally, I would appreciate all good efforts in good will, but since I see some misleading etc.. I see effort but not good will. I have to mention 3 thing about how you fail greatly. I will follow you but that does not necessarily make good : 1- warrany void if seal removed : you showed the sticker and reminded us. but is it legal? If legal : motherboard.vice.com/read/warranty-void-if-removed-stickers-are-illegal if not legal : please why are you misleading people? 2- On the site you mentioned "The icing on the cake is Nvidia's G-Sync certification for the 17-inch device." Which means it is even greater that the laptop has g-sync, but why didn'y you mention it at top where you clarify specifications. It would really ice the cake if you mentioned at the specifications in your review where you usually mention g-sync w or w/o. 3-MSI GT73VR like other models have different SSD, panel, etc. Some computer models even have different CPUs. You should really mention these changes directly. Thus, I hate these deception perception or making hypes..
I would like to add a second HDD in the empty space is it possible?.. Did some one done it ? i would like to add a Seagate Firecude 2tb SSHD .....to get extra space :)
there is only 1 hard drive bay in the GT73VR series, you can put a Seagate Firecuda 2TB SSHD (2.5" laptop version) in that bay, but you would have to remove the other hard drive(If you purchase a system with a hard drive in it of course, most come with a 1TB 7200RPM HGST 2.5" drive standard). There is however 2 M.2 NVME slots for PCI-E SSD's and 1 M.2 Sata Slot for Sata SSD.

I'm still testing with the new laptop with some tweaking, the onl weird thing about this laptop is the benchmark result i get after i installed all the games, the first benchmark score i got is around 15k for fire strike score, but yesterday i tested it once again it dropped to 14k, far behind the asus laptop that has exact same spec with the gt73, which scoring around 16k. i think its some software issue that i had to fix, perhaps its the ssd calibration i messed up earlier.Overall this laptop is quite impressive, if you want a slightly future proof laptop that can handle AAA title games on max setting with 1080p for the following years, this laptop with gtx 1080 is a good choice. solid performance, good cooling, fast and responsive with the 3gb/s ssd, and the amazing 120hz screen that will makes you never want to go back to 60hz. keep in mind that if you purchased this laptop, the first thing you want to do it get rid of the norton anti virus software, office 365 and other bloatware that will slow the computer down.
is MSI GT73VR TITAN good?
Hi, is it possible to install another GTX 1080 to the laptop? if possible, where can I get the thermal solution to do that?
hi my 2 need a ancer for that pls
Thanks for the video! I am newie about Upgrade RAM,...do i need to Switch of the battery? Any advice? Thanks
is it possible to put a full video card for PC , msi gt 73 s when the old card will become obsolete ?
There will be 2 generations of Video Card upgrades available according to MSI for this laptop. But you will have to purchase a laptop video card upgrade as it will not use a full size pc video card, it will only use a MXM 3.0 form factor or similar video card.

Can i put a 3080 RTX into my MSI GT73 ? 🌚
if i upgrade my ram to the maximum, do i have to repaste the cpu and gpu?
Do you have any idea if it can handle 128GB RAM (4x32gb)? And any video about reaching the 2 slots that are under the keyboard??? 4 years later, watching in the Titan ;)
@@Koolitari I confirm .. I bought 2x32 GB, put them in the 2 accessible slots, with the 2 other slots (above the motherboard) filled with the original 2x8 GB. It recognizes 80 GB, but the 16 are "Hardware reserved".
@@GeorgeVasilakis1992 Did this exceeding of the 64GB maximum RAM cause any instability or performance lag?
@@middlepath3607 No, not at all.
Thank you for video, Chippy
Is there a way to make the 3rd SATA m.2 slot to recognize a PCIe? I tried plugging one into it and it doesn't even shows up on BIOS and there's no way to change on BIOS any setting to specify the connector type
Hello there I have an MSI tiatn 83 VR (SLI 1080) I was wondering if I can upgrade its graphics card to 2080 RTX card is it possible?
@@Koolitari thanks
@@Koolitari it’s graphics cards have stopped working can a get new for this model? The graphics cards ? If yes then from where pls?
aaah, what model ssd are these??? there was too much light :-(
@NotebookcheckReviews would you be able to put in a 32GB Intel Optane memory module M.2-2280 PCI Express NVMe SSD?
Speaking to MSI I was told those are socketed and not soldered but getting to them is taking a tremendous risk of damaging the machine and having a $3500 door stop!
you could upgrade to 48 GB by adding 2 x 16GB, and honestly you will not need more than 32 total or even 48, you are fooling yourself if you believe you need above that
Is it possible later on to upgrade 1070 to a new Quadro P4000 or P5000 in the below Msi GT73 VR model for use to workstation
Kevin Chiu you need to remove keyboard to add memory, this is a real chore and easier to buy the unit configured w 32 or 64 DDR4 off the bat.
so ... where I can buy mxm gtx 1080? Even now there are no one in my shop /
The only area i found them is on ebay
where's info about HDD and will fit in there 2.5 15mm hdd ?
I dont think it will fit
Hey help me. Anyone know screw size for bottom body case gt73vr ?
I recent bought this laptop. Can I put in a 4Tb Hdd 15mm thickness???
Aren't those warranty sticker illegal?
Yeah that is what I have heard years ago and NC stated it would void warranty...
[Chippy] My feeling on this is that if they put stickers on, you might have more stress if something goes wrong and it gets sent back. Just be aware. Different countries will have different laws on this and it's possible that this sticker is only intended for certain markets (but they put it on every product anyway.)
Does it have both g sync and 120 r/r ????
G-sync at 120hz at 1080p is an option they also have a 4K UHD, G-sync option with a 60-75hz refresh right now.
Yes, I kind of understood your "option" as you have to choose "G-Sync" rather than 1080p vs 4K.
My bad.
+Lunielle also when you do upgrade gpu msi includes modified cooling for the newer mxm modules
Thanks, Chippy.
Normally, I would appreciate all good efforts in good will, but since I see some misleading etc.. I see effort but not good will.
I have to mention 3 thing about how you fail greatly. I will follow you but that does not necessarily make good :
1- warrany void if seal removed : you showed the sticker and reminded us. but is it legal?
