- The Boy in the Plastic Bubble is a 1976 American made-for-television drama film inspired by the lives of David Vetter and Ted DeVita, who lacked effective immune systems.
It stars John Travolta, Glynnis O'Connor, Diana Hyland, Robert Reed, and P.J. Soles. It was written by Douglas Day Stewart, executive produced by Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg (who, at the time, produced Starsky and Hutch and Charlie's Angels), and directed by Randal Kleiser, who would work with Travolta again in Grease shortly after.
The original music score was composed by Mark Snow.
The theme song "What Would They Say" was written and sung by Paul Williams.
William Howard Taft High School in Woodland Hills was used for filming.
I remember seeing this in 1976 when I was 12. I can't believe it's been 47 years when this came out. Time flies!!
We are the exact same age 😀. Great time to live in.
God bless you.
@@RCShadow … How could y'all have been 12 because I was just 8 ?
@@YManCyberDude
What year were you born?
@@RCShadow … Oh you're testing me now to see if I just made up my age. Well I was born in 1968.
@@YManCyberDude
Noooo. I was not testing anything. If you were born in '68 you are 54 or there about. My sister is your age. we all are getting older aren't we?
I worked w/ David, "the Bubble Baby," at TEXAS CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL, when he was 5 and 6 yrs old. (I was saddened to hear of his passing at 13...and how bittersweet to know that he and his mother were finally able to HUG EACH OTHER the last few days of his life.) All the challenges encountered by David and his family were met with extraordinary courage and dignity!
He was 12 when he died.
How did they change his diaper?
@@HEAVENBOUND267 No expert but I imagine sterilised diapers and using gloves. So the person changing the kid is on the outside, but the gloves allow the parents to reach in pick up the child and put a diaper on. At least this makes logical sense as how they could do it.
@@steam_jane5580 I actually seen a movie a week or so ago and figured it out. Thanks!
john travolta did an excellent job playing his role in this film i loved it xx
Wow what a big difference watching this 40s some years later. Thank you

The little boy who played baby Todd was soooo adorable ❤
In 1977, Diana Hyland was posthumously awarded an Emmy for her role in the film...after she was announced as the winner, John Travolta took the stage to accept on her behalf, saying "Here's to you, Diana, wherever you are".
My mother In-law watched this movie and then approached NASA, she had heard of children who were allergic to the sun, and that were born without sweat glands, when she watched this movie it helped her decide that if they could put a boy in the bubble then they could help these children she devoted her life to making special suits for children who were Born without sweat glands and for children who were allergic to this sun, A 40 W lightbulb would cause cancerous lesions she traveled all over the world to help children with these diseases and she was on many talkshows sadly melanoma took her life 20 years ago a disease that she try to protect children from that were allergic to the sun. Time sure flies saw this on T.v. back in 76 was married and had 2 kids but just 19 ,John was so beautiful, that smile, those eyes, he still is, but he is probably oneof the best actors we have. His life has been filled with sorrow but he has taught us to keep going. Pray he finds love that can live a long life beside him ,with whoever he chooses
WOW, John Travolta did an EXCELLENT job in this movie. I especially liked his huge smile when he left the house and could feel the wind and be outside. The feeling of that moment was translated very well.
YES I KNOW IT WAS A WONDERFUL MOMENT THEY DID IN THE MOVIE..
IkR? Who knows this kid might have a big future in movies 😂

Sad the Real Boy In the Plastic Bubble Died I saw the story Think his Name was David Not sure could be thinking of some one Else
i was 11 when i saw this movie for the first time , i truly wish David Vetter, the origenal bubble boy would have lived so much longer than just the 12 short years he had ... it's amazing how far medical science has come in the 45 plus years since this movie came out ...
Ya I wish they had never operated on him.
@@06JoybellsHe would have died anyway .It was a question of time. A child cannot stay forever in bubble ! It was controversial at this time when real boy was raised in a bubble..He needed to have a life and have connections and be in touch with real kids come on ! Thats not a life for à kid..
@@user-jo6yy5lf4lagree with you on that aspect. Imo, Multiple medical science disciplines have been using humans as test subjects for centuries.
Why would you wish he could of lived longer in his condition?
He could not ever be Normal, and you would need a ton of money just to keep him alive.
He could never play with other kids, go places, because of germs
How beautiful it was John Travolta ❤
How sad for John Travolta; falling in love with Diana Hyland on this set and losing her in 1977 to breast cancer and 40+ years later losing his wife Kelly Preston to the same horrible disease.
I know....this is doubly tragic....RIP
Don't forget his son Jet who passed after suffering a seizure.
@@ddivincenzo1194 not forgotten; the tragedy of losing two loves to breast cancer was what I was referring. So sad for the entire family.
This is a weirdly tragic moive between the real boy it was based on David who sadly never really made it out of his bubble died from lyphoma cancer from epstein barr virus that was contracted from his sister bone marrow. In this moive he walks out of the bubble to ride a horse. Robert Reed died of aids related colon cancer, Ralph Bellemy has died, Diane Hyland breast cancer then involved with JT then lost his son to seizure then his wife Kelly to breast cancer.

“Has it ever struck you that life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quick you hardly catch it going?”― Tennessee Williams.
Beautiful quote.
Except when you find out that all the memories were a lie, that the one u thought was your hero, turned out to be your enemy not even your friend. Its beyond hurtful.
@@karenhope5700 Trouble is, my memories are all bad ones, and I have to watch films from You Tube all night or else I get nightmares in which I relive the bad memories.
It doesn't matter anyway .
Not at all. I don't live for the world, so I don't see as the world nor think as the world. That's the beauty of having a relationship with the Lord, living for God, seeing as God; the earth is stained with evil and injustice and the outcome of that is self-pity, bitterness, frustration, anger, selfishness, hopelessness and confusion. Death is just an eternal transition to a kingdom far greater then anything the world has to offer ............ ; )

Quit comparing.
You have got some nerve. A year or two out of a lifetime and he lived it for 12 years??? Also consider the blood draws, experiments and pain he endured. He was also in considerable pain after he got the bone marrow, was sick, and died of cancer.
@@jacquiethebibliophil I think u might had misinterpreted my comment. I didn't mean to undermine his pain and struggle, if anything I meant to say that because of the 1yr of lockdown I can only imagine how so much harder 12 years must had been for this poor little guy. He was braver than all of us.
Don’t compare that to being immune compromised

Bet they could have got an extra hour & a 1/2 out of the epic freakout his parents would have had.
We can only assume he did die, probably fairly quickly. A least he got to hold his girl!
The real David Vetter was the Boy in the plastic bubble was 13 when he passed away in 1984. I thought John Travolta was a little to old to play the part. This still was a good movie. Rip David Vetter 1971-1984
He was definitely too old, they just wanted a romantic teen story, and he was a heartthrob at the time, so he got the part.
Wow , that's so hard too hear , I wish he could really that in real life ,
They made the movie the way they wished it would've ended....
This movie brought light to a serious disease. The only issue is that it doesn't include all the pain and sufferring included. I know because I have this. This isn't a joke and portrayed much nicer than it actually is.

Not a whole lot makes me cry but this movie did. I loved this character for John Travolta! He was so sweet, gentle & most of all courageous! My heart melted every time he smiled with those beautiful eyes!! I kept thinking, he was a star in the making. Growing up, I never thought he was cute or anything...not in SNF or Grease. In this movie, he looked like his face wasn't as thin. To me, he definitely looked more handsome!

Love this movie. What's amazing, is the little boy who played Todd as a child looks EXACTLY LIKE John Travolta's son as a little boy. Dead on casting!
He also looks alot like the real boy who had to live in a bubble wen he was little.
I even think the older Gina looks like the toddler Gina.....like they're relatives or something.
Wow, great blast from the past! I was a senior in high school when this movie first aired and here it is 45 years later and I still loved and remembered it as if it were yesterday! John Travolta did such an excellent job portraying Todd. The hugs he gave his parents when he first hugged them in the space suit was great, but the smile when he felt the wind on his face, the leaves, the tree trunk was just beautiful!
I saw this when it came out too and happened on it randomly. Blast from the past indeed.
same for me today! I saw this as a kid. Mike Brady! Never thought I would see this movie again. Seemed like everything Spelling and Goldberg touched was amazing those years.
I was only 6 years old when this movie was made
I was 18yrs old when this movie came on in TV 1976. Amazing how fast time passes.
The real "Bubble Boy", David, did get a space suit when he was 12 but,he NEVER went out ALONE&it was much more complicated than they made it look. A few months later,he made the decision to stop wearing the suit because there was a slight chance he'd built up enough immunity. So,he went outside his sterile room at TX Children's Hosp& walked around outside for while. His body couldn't handle it though. He became gravely ill&died very soon after this. I believe he lived only a couple of days after this. Maybe this movie is a kind of fantasy of his parents',a fantasy of what they hoped could have happened. Also,he lived at home for a year or two as a small child but,he got too big to stay there. He was back in the hospital by the age of 5 or 6&spent the rest of his life there. It would have been so wonderful if this movie COULD have been true!!💖
At the time this movie was shown there was very little understanding or education about people born with genetic disorders. I think it was the first time that a person with a genetic disability was humanized. It was an interesting story with great acting that grabbed your heart and kept it there. The only other movie that was mainstream was about Helen Keller. This movie shed light on persons with disabilities in a much different way.
The mask too
That little boy was such a good actor .and cute as hell

I would have totally walked out of that bubble for Glynnis O-connor. I had such a crush on her.

i never thought much of robert reed until seeing painful expressions on his face now as an adult. i saw this movie when i was a kid, but reading the comments and seeing the tortured look on his face in some scenes, he went through hell in the closet and that diagnosis irl. he was very private and kept his terminal illness from everyone except his daughter and a friend. he later called florence henderson to tell her so she'd tell the rest of the actors and crew who grew close to him. it seems even the children on the brady bunch knew he was gay, but it would have destroyed the run of the show if it was made public.

She was eighteen years his senior and had a young son when they met. She passed from breast cancer in 1977. She made only four episodes of "Eight is Enough" when she died. She was just 41 years old.

I worked in the neighborhood convenience store where the family lived. His dad came in all the time. The neighborhood adopted "D" qs their own, and valued their wishes for anonymity and privacy. When "D" passed away, we all were in mourning. He had a wonderful family and he was very much loved by everyone who talked to him. Their house had a big window in front where part of his protective environment permitted him ti see outside, and to hear the sounds and noises. A lot of the neighborhood kids would come by and sit in the yard to talk to him. Finally, his dad set up chairs and tables so they all could be comfortable. "D" loved it when the kids came by.
