  • The Boy in the Plastic Bubble is a 1976 American made-for-television drama film inspired by the lives of David Vetter and Ted DeVita, who lacked effective immune systems.
It stars John Travolta, Glynnis O'Connor, Diana Hyland, Robert Reed, and P.J. Soles. It was written by Douglas Day Stewart, executive produced by Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg (who, at the time, produced Starsky and Hutch and Charlie's Angels), and directed by Randal Kleiser, who would work with Travolta again in Grease shortly after.
The original music score was composed by Mark Snow.
The theme song "What Would They Say" was written and sung by Paul Williams.
William Howard Taft High School in Woodland Hills was used for filming.

I worked w/ David, "the Bubble Baby," at TEXAS CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL, when he was 5 and 6 yrs old. (I was saddened to hear of his passing at 13...and how bittersweet to know that he and his mother were finally able to HUG EACH OTHER the last few days of his life.) All the challenges encountered by David and his family were met with extraordinary courage and dignity!

The real "Bubble Boy", David, did get a space suit when he was 12 but,he NEVER went out ALONE&it was much more complicated than they made it look. A few months later,he made the decision to stop wearing the suit because there was a slight chance he'd built up enough immunity. So,he went outside his sterile room at TX Children's Hosp& walked around outside for while. His body couldn't handle it though. He became gravely ill&died very soon after this. I believe he lived only a couple of days after this. Maybe this movie is a kind of fantasy of his parents',a fantasy of what they hoped could have happened. Also,he lived at home for a year or two as a small child but,he got too big to stay there. He was back in the hospital by the age of 5 or 6&spent the rest of his life there. It would have been so wonderful if this movie COULD have been true!!💖

At the time this movie was shown there was very little understanding or education about people born with genetic disorders. I think it was the first time that a person with a genetic disability was humanized. It was an interesting story with great acting that grabbed your heart and kept it there. The only other movie that was mainstream was about Helen Keller. This movie shed light on persons with disabilities in a much different way.

i never thought much of robert reed until seeing painful expressions on his face now as an adult. i saw this movie when i was a kid, but reading the comments and seeing the tortured look on his face in some scenes, he went through hell in the closet and that diagnosis irl. he was very private and kept his terminal illness from everyone except his daughter and a friend. he later called florence henderson to tell her so she'd tell the rest of the actors and crew who grew close to him. it seems even the children on the brady bunch knew he was gay, but it would have destroyed the run of the show if it was made public.

I worked in the neighborhood convenience store where the family lived. His dad came in all the time. The neighborhood adopted "D" qs their own, and valued their wishes for anonymity and privacy. When "D" passed away, we all were in mourning. He had a wonderful family and he was very much loved by everyone who talked to him. Their house had a big window in front where part of his protective environment permitted him ti see outside, and to hear the sounds and noises. A lot of the neighborhood kids would come by and sit in the yard to talk to him. Finally, his dad set up chairs and tables so they all could be comfortable. "D" loved it when the kids came by.
