I haven't seen vinyl like that in years, I used to install that sheet vinyl back in the day. Most of that sheet vinyl was Armstrong Corlon sheet vinyl, most of what I installed contained no asbestos .Thankfully, lol. The guys who taught me the trade ,had all kinds of stories about the way things were when they started in the trade. Good job brother, most guys don't use tackless on the stairs these days.
Wow,,, 1yr ago. Couple things you could have mentioned. If you run the carpet on steps, down grain down hill , like you did ( that's what I call it) the rest of the job should be the same IF POSSIBLE! The small pieces of tack strip can be used to do a step ( or in the future) just add nails if needed! I've never used tack strip on the sides of the tread myself. $10.00 a stair is a fair price , you are spot on for the upcharge on stairs. If I do just a flight of stairs for a customer, its $250.00 .
Great video👍🏼My wife wants me to redo our stairs, but I don’t have a kick plate or a grip cutter, or a staple gun…so I’m wondering, if it is still possible to do a good job without these tools??🙁
If you want to Finnish the sides of the stairs better? You left a 1/4” gap at the sides of the gripper do the same with the underlay then cut the carpet a 1/4” big then roll the carpet edge with your fingers just to give it a rolled look, definitely don’t fit gripper to the sides.
Thanks for watching. The reason I did not waterfall it as I had not finished the step yet. I need to install a piece of vinyl on the landing and then install a Stair metal. The reason I rolled the carpet over his saw the homeowner would not chip on it as I would not be back to this project for a while.

Great job! The next guy will be glad you didn't blast it full of staples
Thank you! I can’t stand when other installers do that. I feel it is more work to put in all those staples. Thanks for watching!

You can rent them!

I tear off jobs that look like that! I know the installers in my area used to put steps on that way.
Do top to bottom its easier, and dont need kneekicker,
The top last riser should have been waterfall to match the rest of the stairs.

No strip on the sides, shame, shame.
No strips! My personal preference is anything over 42 inches or so I strip the sides
