If I might give some feedback, I've binge-watched a few of your videos since discovering them yesterday and noticed the text comes and goes a little too quickly. We gotta hear and read and the same time. Other than that… so well done!
Ah yes, this has been mentioned before and in less recent videos such as this one the speed of the text has been driven by my hand moving from pedal to pedal. This one is particularly bad, I think - a lot to read and never enough time until my hand wipes it away. In more recent videos I've made a simple and obvious change: putting the pedals towards the bottom of the shot! The text is now above them and its timing isn't dictated by me pushing switches and turning knobs. Hopefully it's a little better now.
I enjoyed the shootout very much. The only things it really settled for me was the Stonefish is definitely noisy and out, and that the Emperor modulation goes a bit too far (but it still has a huge range of useable tones). Price knocks the Waterfall out of contention so I’m down to 2.
That square wave on the Emperor is amazing! Julia seems the most vibrant although I like the Emperor best thankfully that's what I'm looking at. I'm not thrilled about how expensive they are even used. But I'm not big on chorus and something about that penguin one just sounds subtle and right.
in decision mode on a new JHS Emperor, This video was excellent. Four-item switching format is really nice and helpful for comparing pedals that are really close in function. Also. must say the visual aspect of the video is really pleasing to watch (did you pick the pedal designs and colors on purpose or just get lucky). Finally the clean environment with no distractions was nice attention to detail.
It's been a few years. Don't know if you read this, but am curious how you decided and if you like the Emperor Penguin? I am currently eyeing/earing the JHS Emperor and the Eventide Tricerachorus.
that stonefish had like a uh crackle and lil bits of audio thats not needed, reminded me of the walrus audio (now discontinued) Bellwether, no matter how low you set your instrument it would always make crackling and add unnecessary other noise that sounded harsh and not airy (like positive noise), but the julia sounds beautiful n thick, I'm going to get that and pair it with a Strymon El Capistan, than run it into a eqd afterneath for a hopefully beautiful river of sound.
Question The 3 different wave signs in the emporer can also be achieved by dialing the speed and depth of the artificial blonde? Im basically trying to stay with choosing the emporer iver the blonde. I know the bond seperates the channels out but I'm wondering if that all.
I actually own the Penguin and the Waterfall, and what I hear in this video tracks with my own setup: The JAM is warmer, has better audio quality, but a little hard to settle on the right setting. The JHS has a really classic modulation sound that is easy to get right, but it always sounds a bit dull and plasticy. I'm really interested in the Julia now.
Did you have the chance to decice between the Julia and Waterfall? I am really torn between those two. The background is that I own many JAM pedals and I would ideally find Julia better than waterfall. To be honest whenever I want to decide between a JAM and some other pedal maker JAM always comes on top. It has happened with univibes tremolos and tubescreamers. Yea, anyway I would appreciate some info there, thanks!
@@SubtractiveMoves They are pretty different. The Waterfal sounds better, but the Penguin/Emperor has a specific modulation sound that Waterfall can't do. It actually sounds cool with both at once. For $100, that's a pretty good deal. For me, I just use the Waterfall and CE-2W now.
Great comparison video. Thanks for this. Almost sold on the Julia, but gotta go try and see what actually inspires. And I love the Scarlett Thomas books on the side.
I have to confess I've only read The End of Mr Y (which is great) but I just love the cover designs on the other two. Plus the colours felt suitable...
I was today going to place an order for...let's just say one of the brands you've demoed here. You stopped me and made me look at the other options as I realised what I did and didn't like about it in comparison. It would have been an expensive mistake...that might give you a clue, not sure ;) Thanks again!
Awesome videos. For chorus I would have liked to hear more comparison time on what musical sounds each pedal can make, rather than showing how the pedals respond to random odd and extreme settings (max speed, etc.) that very few people would likely ever use.
Anna The Koala Thanks! No band, no. (Apart from one that only ever meets in rehearsal studios to jam Beatles, Stones and Neil Young.) Just solo noodling, and hundreds of tiny unfinished recordings 🙂
Good choice, these 4 analog choruses. I have the stonefish, it sounds way better than here, it needs tweaking and more time to find its sweet spot, it does a very good leslie simulation. Downsides: no battery and bass-volume boost when engaged.
Thanks! People's individual setup can definitely make a big difference to the sound, so I appreciate your Stonefish may sound a lot better. I don't dislike, I just like the others more :)
I think the JHS wins as to me the extremes of a pedal is where it's at, its that setting you can pull put for weird but if the pretty one can't do it? Well... Julia is 2nd for me. The Greenhouse has a clipping thing in this video, if that's just the recording then ok but it's still muffled sounding compared with the others.
It's the best version, right?! It's a Guitar Center exclusive and I think it was a limited edition that is no longer on the market. I think they said there were supposed to be only 350, but that seems low.
they changed the design for the julia pedal, though, so if you're still interested in the pedal you should check out the new design to see if you're still deterred by it
Boy is the Waterfall butt ugly. Then JHS is just a penguin in the middle of a lavender box (although it does have a nice elegance to it, eh?) Julia is a scary mythic creature. What's the backstory on that design? Stonefish, which I had to pull up in Google images is actually a rather awesome drawing. Alright, someone already mentioned the too-quick captions. :)
I liked more JAM then Walrus. JSH sounds for me too weak and thin. Greenhouse is too flangery and it seems like it seriously lacks of headroom like cheap China pedals. JAM sounds so thick and creamy!
Definitely like loop 1 2, er too... but that's not important right now. Can you leave the online descriptions up a little longer please? Some of us are dyslexic (And just to prove it, my spellcheck just corrected that. What idiot thought that it would be a good idea to call an inability to spell by a name that's already impossible to spell?).
I have learnt a valuable lesson since I made this one - leave the space at the top of the frame so I don’t have to wipe the text every time my hand comes in.
I don’t know why but the JHS and Julia just give me this vibe… it’s definitely between those 2
The video hasn't been updated, but I subscribed to this channel because it's great.
Loved the 1st riff you looped.....and the Julia gets my vote
My favorite :
1. Emperor
2. Julia
3. Waterfall
4. Stonefish
Nice demo, thanks!
Julia tops Emperor for me.
Agreed... The Stonefish sounds like an EHX Small Stone (phaser).
2024 says thanks. Helped me decide what pedal I wanted. Great format for showing all the tones.
…what did you go for?
@@ThePedalBoredsame, still using your videos in 2024. Wish you were still making them!
Thank you so much for this pedal comparison. This allows all of us to decide between what I can tell are all amazing pedals. Keep up the great work!

I just wrote the same damn thing.

love the first loop so much
Would love to see a comparison with the Catalinbread Callisto
I liked all the effects that made you go “Yuck”.
Because of this demo I’m getting the Julia (now the Juliana) .
Thanks for a great demo.
I thought the Juliana was the Julia V2 on steroids?

Your loop here is amazing. I love chorus but I easily overdo it all the time. This riff actually benefits a lot from the effect.
thanks for this comparison, very helpful!
Jam all the way.
Wow, thanks all of these are so great!
i could listen to this song all day
The second loop reminded me of some old Sparklehorse, nice playing and cool demo 😎
Ah, I love Sparklehorse. Haven't listened to their stuff in years, but maybe it's made its way into my DNA
The Pedal Bored Had a feeling you might’ve heard them, and yes I think so 🙂
Great video! Thanks for doing this shootout!
It's hard to tell via RUclips: which had the least hiss? Maybe 2 least noisy ones?
Another great video! I love that square vibrato.
Do Noise It's fun, isn't it? If the Emperor also had a control for the LFO delay it'd be perfect
Love your video format!

This lick is so tasty! Sure I feel that way because I graduated high school in 98, but it's lovely.
All good ,depending on what you do; dug the JHS for features, and Jam for raw sound.Far prefer and use Vibrato over Chorus.
Stonefish needs a level knob.
I will be keeping my Julia. Versatile.
