Not gonna lie, I think Kirk's soloing even live has fallen off the past 10 years. What they need is a producer that's gonna push him like Bob Rock did on the Black Album.
Not familiar with Holt, listened a bit of him just now and meh, he's a cookie cutter shredder...never been into Slayer either but their solos are a hot mess from what I've listened to.
@@marioguti9887 i dont know about that one. Broderick may just be. But Marty is definetly up there. Hell, out of all the big 4 guitarist, those 2 are likely the best
Kirks a disappointing guitarist I thought that after all the face melting solos he did thru the 80’s - 90’s he would of become better and more experienced but his playing has really gone down the drain it’s a shame since he’s one of my heroes Btw it doesn’t help that he drowns his solos in wha it’s not cool or creative it’s garbage
It seems that Kirk has some kind of Burnout. He seems to be really bored by playing the same songs every night - and they are constantly touring since 20 years or so. Happens to a lot of musicians. But dunno, if Kirk would rather surf somewhere in Hawaii he should just hang it in and quit the band altogether - he should have enough money.
MistyMountainMedia definitely, he’s no longer passionate he treats it like a job he’s tired of, its our fault too because a lot of people hold him as the best and he’s just not passionate enough to live up to it and it’s not easy for him to retire either because then Metallica wouldn’t be Metallica and knowing the fan base it would cause chaos lmao
Maruchan Chiken maybe it’s a physical problem. I’ve been playing for 20+ years . I have carpel tunnel now and it hurt my endurance a little playing the faster stuff
I would say that the only one from a playing standpoint that still tries his best to create solid stuff is James. Rob does well accenting and bridging the gap between the drums and rythem guitar, and Lars is a good arranger, but less of a drummer... James is the only one that seems to always care about doing his best with the guitar.
BUT, Lars does the Job in the studio and since 2016 he´s been good in the drums live, Lars failed a lot in the second part of Death Magnetic tours, but since he got in the studio again he did really good live and no one can question his drum work in the Studio... Kirk on the other hand "lost his phone" and improvised the solos
Yeah Lars doesnt practice because his beats are the simplest in the whole genre of metal.. the only thing you can maybe say is difficult about it is that their songs are usually about 7-8 minutes.. I wanna see Lars try some Lamb of God, Bleed from Within, Devildriver hahah
Well if you want to be specific about why megadeth is better wellll megadeth guitarists that have been swapped like a fucking crack whore ok pay day then yes these musicians that played for megadeth are better then Kirk that’s obvious BUT FUCK NO MEGADETH being better then Metallica, Dave isn’t even that good his soloing is very much like Kirk hammets. A lot of pentatonic being tossed around the fretboard with no soul or feeling
Megadeth... I can't ignore the voice long enough to get to the solo in any of their songs... And most of his riffs sound like boring exercises to me, which is probably okay for guitarists in search of technic, but I like melody and Mustaine as none.
EH Megadeth is more technichal and skilled, Metallica compose better in my opinion, specially in their golden years what Metallica wrotte was just amazing, in recent years i give the edge to Megadeth though
People hating on Kirk is pretty boring. He isn’t the best most technically gifted player - I totally agree. I also agree that he can be sloppy live. But I don’t think he has ever claimed to be the best in the world? And being a good guitar player is more than just how shredtastic you are, its about writing songs people like and Metallica do that. Their music is based around song writing whereas bands like Megadeth (who I like and think are awesome) focus on writing music based on shred skills which is cool but generally has appeal to other guitar players. Whereas “songs” reach a wider audience. Just my 2 cents.
Did you ever stop to think for a second that the reason you see him getting so much hate is because he has really fallen off? Yes its not just about shredding and no one ever implied that, it's about writing songs? he writes terrible, lazy solos. Uh every bands music is based around song writing? lol
Watch the Big 4 the part when Metallica is huddling up before going live and Kirk declared, in his usual nerdy voice, that they are the "Big 1/time to show the world who is the best" like saying the 3 bands is not at par with us. What a douche of a guitarist.
I think people misinterpreted what they do at that part of the show. It's supposed to be dumb and crappy. They obviously didn't know the song but it was on purpose, Just to have some fun and they only do that for about 2 minutes out of a 2 hour show. I might sound like a fanboy but those are my thoughts. I have been disappointed at them many times but their music was such a big part of my life growing up that I just kinda deal with it. I feel that they are uninspired and that's why Kirk plays like that. I think he just plays out of obligation and he doesn't really care anymore, which makes me sad because he was the one who got me into guitar. He might not play like Gilbert or Becker but his early stuff really impacted me and created my love for shredding.
It's just that after being a professionnal for 40 years, you're not supposed to play like that, even if you don't know the song... I'm with you about the rest, still love them but disappointed.
they did the same in Portugal with a portuguese song and people went crazy. But they did pretty good that time. That Prince thing was bad. And yes, I agree that Megadeth are way way better too.
No, people need to stop being stupid, recognize shit when they see it and call it out for what it is. Playing out of obligation is one thing, not giving a shit about the millions of people who pay to see you play live because you're too big to fail is something else entirely. Slayer have been playing out of obligation for years at this point, yet they're as tight as they've ever been. Not to mention that Garry Holt is a fucking replacement guitarist for them, and he still kills it every time. That's professionalism.
About the whole comment about getting him to "sit down with a few cups of coffee a day for 2 weeks"... Bob Rock actually had to force him to do that for the Black Album, when recording the Unforgiven. Kirk went in, noodled and produced something genuinely shit, and they basically had to lock him in the studio, against his will, recording dozens of takes for hours while he was pouting and getting pissy about it, until he came up with something that suited the song. I can't help but think that that's part of the problem. I think it's in the documentary or some interviews about the album, it might be floating around on RUclips somewhere.
I think his self-inflicted brain damage plays a pretty big part. That aside, I just don't think he has a musical ear; his vibrato and intonation have always been awful.
@@chriszoupa7898 the man drank heavily for close to 3 decades. sometimes it's just genetics how that affects someone's brain. I think they should just be done at this point. They got nothing left to prove as a band. The first four albums will live forever in time.
Totally agree Chris! Kirk hasn't given two shits about his solos since the Black Album. On the DVD "A Year In The Life of Metallica" there's a bit where Kirk is working on his solo for 'The Unforgiven'. He's actually putting work and thought into the solo and you can tell he actually cares. But these days he cares more about his other hobbies - would rather be surfing and adding to his horror collection.
It's true ,even in the beginning stages of a guitarist, I'm 100% sure that they would look up to Kirk's solos to learn even if it's from kill, master or ride ... Being a huge Metallica fan and a guitarist, i'd say he got into the band way before mastering his instrument , still Kirk is my God . LOVE METALLICA
I'm just learning the solo from "ride the lightning", I'm halfway there and it's a killer solo!!!!! so sad to see that he can / or won't barley play it live these days. Btw, thanks for the video on it ;)
How is a music stand different than a stage monitor with the words scrolling? Sure it wasn't a great cover but it was probably a "last minute" tribute these 2 wanted to perform or maybe just Robert pitched it. But what is known is when they've finished and are walking off stage Robert says "Thank you, Prince, your very own." They held this concert in Mineappolis Minnesota which is Prince's hometown. It was a fun tribute probably meant to be an interlude or band break that they decided to fill with this.
meh, i feel sorry for them. You gotta realize they just arent into it any more, They are into their familes and other things. You hear they got Taylor Swift on thier Ipod and they really want to work with Miley Cirus and shit. They just grew up and their savagery is gone. They should have quit long ago but there is just too much money involved and they cant just move on and enjoy the fruits of their success. I think its a great example of being trapped in your dream, they got everything they ever wanted but now they want different things and they are stuck living the life they planned when they were drunken teenagers....
I kinda have the same opinion. Back in the day, when I was starting to learn guitar, Metallica was one of my big inspirations and I remember when I was listening to "Fade to Black" or "One" and trying to learn that solos. Kirk obviously was never a virtuous guitarrist , but he used to composed solos with good melodies, and at least you could perceive that it had an effort to make sound good. Nowadays it seems that he just don't care anymore, and is just playing because the songs need a solo. Personally, I think it's very offensive for lots of players that are trying live as guitarrists
Great talk Chris! I know you're a big metallica fan, but not a blind one. I know what you're saying is CONSTRUCTIVE REAL CRITICISM! I totally get it! I kinda believe Kirk is still high on drugs. He said he got recovered, but I think James covers for him during interviews. If he's too faded and passed out, how's he gonna do anything? What else?
So when Metallica play a show. They take a break. James and Lars go offstage and take a break while Kirk and Rob stay out and entertain the crowd. Usually with something from a local band(Prince -Minneapolis, COC - Charlotte). It was never meant to be serious.
Kirk Hammett‘s playing on Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets are some of the best solos of metal, then Kirk decided to lobotomize himself with a wah peddle
Oh yeah, mind-blowing if you mean they kinda ripped off Metallica on one track because they didn't wanna work harder. Listen to This Means War and then Sad But True. Song structure and even vocal patterns are clear rip offs.
I've seen Avenged Sevenfold twice and both times it was extremely disappointing. I've heard much good stuff, but it didn't feel like they even wanted to be there. No movement on stage, no smiles, no nothing. It was like a karaoke. Very sad :(
@@samriehl7163 BRUH lol. Nice one. But to be fair, they took his riffs that were written for Metallica. Regardless, I have no respect for plagiarizers, like The Offspring, who ripped off Foo Fighters once.
"Playing the same tired licks over and over again" this is exactly what Zakk Wylde has been doing for the last 10 years. He used to be amazing and now his solos and songs are rushed out the door, packaged up and sold with minimal effort involved.
Now that you've mentioned Opeth as one of your Favorites, Please upload the solo lesson of Burden and Lepper Affinity. I was asking for this so long and will be highly obliged if you do so! Cheers from India! 😁
For me, Lars keep him because some technical point, maybe some contract restriction about his percentage of his songs rights, like, "if you fire him you have to pay a fine, and his percentage grow X%", yeah, I think it should be that monstrous bad business. I don't know but in my mind as Lars, have to ponder: Fire him to improve our work (profit as well) X keep with him because he have booming music rights that can be expansive
Leonardo N.R. I don’t think Lars or James care that much either anymore. They’ve always been the ones to write all the actual music and arrangements. So they let Kirk throw in a solo here and there, probably not worth shaking up the band at this point.
Good observation all around. New Kirk in the early-mid 80's and thought he was a smok'n guitarist. His work on "Kill Em' All" was gunslinger badass. RTLightning Same. Now and for a long time Kirks playing has definitely digressed. To a point of being sheer boring. Your so right about the wah' and the "Improvising" crap too. Peace brohan'.
I don’t think Metallica care about being their best at this point. My reasoning for thinking this is when Slipknot’s drummer filled in for Lars it sounded a million times better, and anytime they’ve played with Dave (or any other guitarist that has a good tone) they’ve sounded better. Lars and Kirk slack off because they can, when you’re as big as they are fans just want to breathe the same oxygen as them, they don’t care about how good they can butcher anything off of ride the lighting . I don’t believe they have a passion for it at this point.
Chris from Savatage smokes Kirk, and all I saw back in the day was Kirk on all the guitar mags. Chris Oliva created a beginning, build his solos into a crescendo, and brought us out of the solo with great ease.
I always picked Megadeth over Metallica any day even though I like both. As a beginner guitarist I started with Kirk solos. Then I moved to Marty as I advanced.
1000x agree. I said for a while now that Kirk "phoned" in his solos on Hardwired. I dont thunk he practices one minute and relies on the same things he did mediocre-ly yeats ago. I'd fully expected him to be master level guitar at his age/experience but it seems like he's digressed.
Definitely agree with a lot of your points. I think the most frustrating thing about Kirk's work on Hardwired in particular isn't that his solos sound half-assed (at least compositionally). Rather, it's that as a Metallica fan and as a Kirk Hammett fan, I WANT to see him succeed. I want to see him try new things and experiment with new ideas and give us something different. I want him to create beautiful solos, as you said. Even if his solos on Hardwired weren't the fastest or shreddiest since Justice or Death Magnetic, I still would have much preferred something unique that he clearly put his heart into... but he didn't. I know he's better than this.
I'm a huge Metallica fan, but I agree with you. Lars' drums too. He still rushes all his beats live, which forces Kirk to try and stay on point. Hetfield's gotta be the guy to reel it all back in. It doesn't sound like they put a lot of personal time into honing their craft. Maybe the passion's gone and they're just hanging on to get paid.
@@chriszoupa7898 Yup, same here. Agree again! Honestly, your tutorial of the Creeping Death solo has helped me, not only learning that solo, but improve my playing in general. Kudos and thanks!

Not gonna lie, I think Kirk's soloing even live has fallen off the past 10 years. What they need is a producer that's gonna push him like Bob Rock did on the Black Album.
But bob litterly pushed Kirk to tears and id imagine that he wouldn't want to got threw that just for a guitar solo of all things
Well said. Kerry king said years ago that Metallica chose the wrong guitarist from Exodus. Gary Holt smokes Kirk every day of the year
Never listen to Exodus much. Really just discovering Holt since he been with Slayer and he is a beast.
Not familiar with Holt, listened a bit of him just now and meh, he's a cookie cutter shredder...never been into Slayer either but their solos are a hot mess from what I've listened to.
Marty Friedman, now that guy rocks, best guitarist thats ever been in either Megadeth or Metallica...
@@marioguti9887 i dont know about that one. Broderick may just be. But Marty is definetly up there. Hell, out of all the big 4 guitarist, those 2 are likely the best
@@marioguti9887 never in key and whammy in a bad way
Your face on the Thumbnail though... Lol 😂
Kirks a disappointing guitarist I thought that after all the face melting solos he did thru the 80’s - 90’s he would of become better and more experienced but his playing has really gone down the drain it’s a shame since he’s one of my heroes
Btw it doesn’t help that he drowns his solos in wha it’s not cool or creative it’s garbage
Took the words out of my mouth
He got arthritis
Maruchan Chiken maybe it’s a physical problem. I’ve been playing for 20+ years . I have carpel tunnel now and it hurt my endurance a little playing the faster stuff
Articulated perfectly... thank you, this needed to be said.
I really hate to admit this, but you're absolutely correct. Kirk has gone downhill fast in the past 20 years.
I would say that the only one from a playing standpoint that still tries his best to create solid stuff is James. Rob does well accenting and bridging the gap between the drums and rythem guitar, and Lars is a good arranger, but less of a drummer... James is the only one that seems to always care about doing his best with the guitar.
Daddy Boi
Kirk is not trash in the least - he's one of the greatest metal lead guitarists of all time. But you're right - Gary's comment was stupid.
a lot of the same things ecpecially the work ethic can be said about lars...lets be honest lars never practice
thats because he is the drummer, he doesnt really need to practice much.
He writes some great music tho. I wouldn't say he is lazy. The drums could be improved A LOT however.
Dave Lombardo gave Lars free drum lessons and he still decided to play shit and take any lessons to play real drums metal.
Megadeth really is so much better. Kirk just doesn't care and he's got no feeling
not2stupidguitar honesty the only one keeping that band together is James I would like to see him in another band besides Metallica
But Dave's voice.. I only have 3 Megadeth albums, the rest I simply can't stand his 'singing'
Glad you said this. Very well put.
DYSTOPIA IS AMAZING!!!
ante boskovic fuck yes!!!!!
Kiko is on a whole new planet, that's why lol
People hating on Kirk is pretty boring. He isn’t the best most technically gifted player - I totally agree. I also agree that he can be sloppy live. But I don’t think he has ever claimed to be the best in the world? And being a good guitar player is more than just how shredtastic you are, its about writing songs people like and Metallica do that. Their music is based around song writing whereas bands like Megadeth (who I like and think are awesome) focus on writing music based on shred skills which is cool but generally has appeal to other guitar players. Whereas “songs” reach a wider audience. Just my 2 cents.
DexterLlew nobody is expecting him to be a shred virtuoso. Just to be he best version of him and not a useless lazy fuck.
The problem is not about his ability, it's his shitty work ethic.
DexterLlew bravo my man well said
I still think Unforgiven is one of the best solos ever written
Exactly. Ppl need to quit hating.
No it was terrible and people pay a lot of money to expect better than that....it was brutal...
I personally like the riffs and vocals much better with Metallica but the solos are definitely not up to Megadeth's level
These doodles are for fun. It's not a proper cover.
Shame they're not fun to listen to
I think his self-inflicted brain damage plays a pretty big part. That aside, I just don't think he has a musical ear; his vibrato and intonation have always been awful.
Brutal but accurate
@@chriszoupa7898 the man drank heavily for close to 3 decades. sometimes it's just genetics how that affects someone's brain. I think they should just be done at this point. They got nothing left to prove as a band. The first four albums will live forever in time.
You crack me up man, but nice vid. Very good points
MajorDook1 yep seems like after the Black Album he got super wealthy and cared less and less about making music and more about other hobbies
I think the Kirk/ Rob doodle is a bit of an intended joke. They pick one song to learn before each show and it's just a bit of a goof
ha ha ha funny video chris !!! complacency kicking in with hammett
There is a funny video of Bob Rock getting on Kirk Hammet in the studio about his solos. He sarcastically says amaze me Kirk while rolling his eyes.
Garage days was fkn sick :D
Agree with everything else
Keep it up \m/
It's true ,even in the beginning stages of a guitarist, I'm 100% sure that they would look up to Kirk's solos to learn even if it's from kill, master or ride ... Being a huge Metallica fan and a guitarist, i'd say he got into the band way before mastering his instrument , still Kirk is my God . LOVE METALLICA
I was at that show, It was bad. The rest of the show was really good.
they should just play some motorhead covers instead live
I'm just learning the solo from "ride the lightning", I'm halfway there and it's a killer solo!!!!! so sad to see that he can / or won't barley play it live these days. Btw, thanks for the video on it ;)
He likely cant even play it anymore
I 1000% agree...I thought I was alone
Joseph Vega you thought you were the only person who doesn’t like Kirk Hammett? 🤔😂
@@kevins4222 up until this video I hadn't heard/seen anyone talk about his sloppy, monotonous, wah wah drowning pentatonic licks or his work ethic
But hey there is enough for all of us to not like
How is a music stand different than a stage monitor with the words scrolling? Sure it wasn't a great cover but it was probably a "last minute" tribute these 2 wanted to perform or maybe just Robert pitched it. But what is known is when they've finished and are walking off stage Robert says "Thank you, Prince, your very own." They held this concert in Mineappolis Minnesota which is Prince's hometown. It was a fun tribute probably meant to be an interlude or band break that they decided to fill with this.
100% agree
work ethic = dream theater
Great description
"As much as I think Megadeth are better"
You wonderful man
Well said man couldn't agree more.
meh, i feel sorry for them.
PRSenthusiast nah, it s okay
Couldn't agree more. You rock!
This is why I love guitarists like Synyster Gates. Everything he does is mind blowing
Sure, but rendez-vous in 30 years, not sure he'll even still be there...
Very sad :(
@@theslashclone666 guess thats payback for all the songs metallicas ripped off megadeth
@@samriehl7163 BRUH lol. Nice one. But to be fair, they took his riffs that were written for Metallica. Regardless, I have no respect for plagiarizers, like The Offspring, who ripped off Foo Fighters once.
Agree man. And just like every dad ever, I’ll say: “No I’m not mad, just disappointed.”
I definitely agree with you on megadeth being better, their music is a lot more interesting
"Playing the same tired licks over and over again" this is exactly what Zakk Wylde has been doing for the last 10 years. He used to be amazing and now his solos and songs are rushed out the door, packaged up and sold with minimal effort involved.
I think this is very harsh his band made some really great songs im referring to black label
Its really sucks to see Hammet just phoning it in nowadays. He was a big influence to me growing up.
If I'm ever having a sucky day on the guitar, I listen to this cover and suddenly I don't feel so bad..
Absolutely valid points

Hey let’s not forget Vai and Yngwie
Definitely Synyster Gates!
John Petrucci, yes.
Are we forgetting the fact that there's just one god, and it's called Jason Becker? :^
Spot on and you didn't even mention the wah pedal once!
Totally agree, Chris. I love your channel. You are an amazing guitarplayer!!
Hey, how many people buy tickets to your concerts and remember your riffs?
Probably 24

So tru re Dystopia. What a great album.
Solid rant dude.
1000x agree. I said for a while now that Kirk "phoned" in his solos on Hardwired. I dont thunk he practices one minute and relies on the same things he did mediocre-ly yeats ago. I'd fully expected him to be master level guitar at his age/experience but it seems like he's digressed.
Hey chris do u use guitar rig 5 in all your videos?
True, Point Taken!
Spit Out The Bone has rad solos though. And Kirk has said that these were the only ones that weren't improvised.
Solid and constructive rant!
I have much respect for responding. To this metallica has failed MEGADETH RULES yes zoupa
Just watched the first minute or so of that butchering. I think you nailed the description of a couple drunk dudes in their garage.
Metallica are like 70% of the reason I play guitar doesn't mean they aren't faulted but still awesome at the same time
@@chriszoupa7898
