    FINALLY!!!
    I really thought it was just me... Some of the solo's he created on the Master' and 'Justice albums were fantastic, but lately it just seems to be "I'll just tremolo pick with a Wah... Nailed it... NEXT SOLO"
    It's pitiful...

    • @daveberggren
      @daveberggren 2 года назад

      You are sooo right...
      Jimi Hendrix had bone crushing techniques for his time, and no offence to Mr Hendrix but todays players make him sound like a blues improvisationist to me... I know Kirk had great love for him and it feels like on Load and further on, he wanted to play more like that, sloppier and simpler.... so.... "tremolo pick with wah" :)

    • @Danumurti18
      @Danumurti18 Год назад +1

      @@daveberggrennot really that the case with Jimi Hendrix though. Alot of greater guitar player at that time. I mean, Django already exist from 1930's. It just his music is fresh at that time, he's pretty creative in songwriting, he bring rebellious spirit in music and influence alot of people with that. Before Jimi, I can't find any musician that channeling some negative emotions like angst, frustration, destruction through their music and stage performance (if you know one, tell me). Before Jimi, music vibe are only fun, party, or love, sad, mellow, or complicated virtuosity like in Bebop and classical. Usually the musicians are also very serious in their playing, while Jimi not afraid being sloppy as long as it support his vision in music he's playing.
      With Kirk, you can tell he's bored with Metallica, his solo album actually pretty interesting.

    James and the bassists have always been great musicians in metallica. They were always the ones that made the band special imo. Hetfields right hand alone I think is pretty heavy metal defining.

    I think Kirk needs a producer in the studio. The documentary on the recording of the Black Album showing Bob Rock tearing him until he came up with one of his greatest solos, The Unforgiven, makes me think that while it can be unpleasant, this is the process that works best for him. There are a lot of excellent musicians that need a good producer in the studio to bring out what they are truest capable of. Unfortunately when you’re a multimillionaire in the biggest band in the world you can decide you don’t want to go through that process anymore.

      Even Adrian's. That guy always works out his stuff in advance, but there are definitely "favourite licks" recognizable, and "Speed of Light" and "The Red & The Black" have a meandering 'jam' quality to it.
      I wish they would put more thought into their compositions these days - I like a lot of their last decade's worth of stuff, but it's easy to jam on Em-C-G-D.

    I grew up on Metallica, and those early album’s are fantastic, and Kirk’s playing WAS fantastic... “When Doves Cry” they were just having fun, however do that shite in your garage not in an stadium, where your fans have paid hard earned money to watch “Metallica “ not the guy’s in Metallica “goof off” that is just being too big to listen to anybody , And they do what they want because they don’t care”we’re having fun, and fuck off” would assume would be there answer to any objections,Now Kirk’s playing itself was a HUGE influence, he is a great player the first five albums is great playing, he’s just gotten lazy, just like Lars, it’s hard to have a “burning” desire or passion when your a multimillionaire, flynon private jets to concerts, get driven from private airport to hotel room, driven to arena, someone else sets up his gear,strings his guitars, tunes his guitars and hands it to him before he walks onstage and then when concerts over, just leaves and someone drives him back to his hotel,or airport to get back on the private jet....your going to lose that “desire,passion”, and it’s obvious Lars and Kirk don’t have it anymore.. and please get that fucking wah-wah pedal away from him!!! He single handely has made me HATE the wah-wah pedal, I just don’t EVER want to hear that damn thing again... from him or any other player....

    People hating on Kirk is pretty boring. He isn’t the best most technically gifted player - I totally agree. I also agree that he can be sloppy live. But I don’t think he has ever claimed to be the best in the world? And being a good guitar player is more than just how shredtastic you are, its about writing songs people like and Metallica do that. Their music is based around song writing whereas bands like Megadeth (who I like and think are awesome) focus on writing music based on shred skills which is cool but generally has appeal to other guitar players. Whereas “songs” reach a wider audience. Just my 2 cents.

    I think people misinterpreted what they do at that part of the show.
    It's supposed to be dumb and crappy. They obviously didn't know the song but it was on purpose, Just to have some fun and they only do that for about 2 minutes out of a 2 hour show. I might sound like a fanboy but those are my thoughts. I have been disappointed at them many times but their music was such a big part of my life growing up that I just kinda deal with it.
    I feel that they are uninspired and that's why Kirk plays like that.
    I think he just plays out of obligation and he doesn't really care anymore, which makes me sad because he was the one who got me into guitar. He might not play like Gilbert or Becker but his early stuff really impacted me and created my love for shredding.

Playing out of obligation is one thing, not giving a shit about the millions of people who pay to see you play live because you're too big to fail is something else entirely. Slayer have been playing out of obligation for years at this point, yet they're as tight as they've ever been. Not to mention that Garry Holt is a fucking replacement guitarist for them, and he still kills it every time. That's professionalism.

    About the whole comment about getting him to "sit down with a few cups of coffee a day for 2 weeks"...
    Bob Rock actually had to force him to do that for the Black Album, when recording the Unforgiven. Kirk went in, noodled and produced something genuinely shit, and they basically had to lock him in the studio, against his will, recording dozens of takes for hours while he was pouting and getting pissy about it, until he came up with something that suited the song. I can't help but think that that's part of the problem. I think it's in the documentary or some interviews about the album, it might be floating around on RUclips somewhere.

Sure it wasn't a great cover but it was probably a "last minute" tribute these 2 wanted to perform or maybe just Robert pitched it. But what is known is when they've finished and are walking off stage Robert says "Thank you, Prince, your very own." They held this concert in Mineappolis Minnesota which is Prince's hometown. I kinda have the same opinion. Back in the day, when I was starting to learn guitar, Metallica was one of my big inspirations and I remember when I was listening to "Fade to Black" or "One" and trying to learn that solos.
    Kirk obviously was never a virtuous guitarrist , but he used to composed solos with good melodies, and at least you could perceive that it had an effort to make sound good. Nowadays it seems that he just don't care anymore, and is just playing because the songs need a solo. Personally, I think it's very offensive for lots of players that are trying live as guitarrists

    I don’t think Metallica care about being their best at this point. My reasoning for thinking this is when Slipknot’s drummer filled in for Lars it sounded a million times better, and anytime they’ve played with Dave (or any other guitarist that has a good tone) they’ve sounded better. Lars and Kirk slack off because they can, when you’re as big as they are fans just want to breathe the same oxygen as them, they don’t care about how good they can butcher anything off of ride the lighting . I don’t believe they have a passion for it at this point.

    Definitely agree with a lot of your points. I think the most frustrating thing about Kirk's work on Hardwired in particular isn't that his solos sound half-assed (at least compositionally). Rather, it's that as a Metallica fan and as a Kirk Hammett fan, I WANT to see him succeed. I want to see him try new things and experiment with new ideas and give us something different. I want him to create beautiful solos, as you said. Even if his solos on Hardwired weren't the fastest or shreddiest since Justice or Death Magnetic, I still would have much preferred something unique that he clearly put his heart into... but he didn't. I know he's better than this.
