And I dare to say that it's also the best one from that era. It's just PERFECT. Amazing rhythm work by Eddie with some of his best riffs, of course the solo is out of this world too. And talkin about rhythm Alex is on fire, and live versions always sound twice as good. In this video you can hear Mike's simple yet powerful bass line, and damn he never loses a beat, even while singing harmonies. Sammy was on fire on the whole 5150 record, and was an amazing showman who filled Dave's shoes with no problems. I prefere the Live without a Net version, but this is pure gold too
I’ll argue this to my grave, this right here was the pinnacle of Van Halen. Sammy brought so much to the band, amazing vocals, and everyone genuinely enjoyed what they were doing. This band will NEVER be replicated, I’m eternally grateful that I got to experience the entire Van Hagar era in all of its magnificent glory!!
Dave’s period was important too. It’s just hard to pin point an era and say it was the best. That performance where they played Poundcake at the awards sums it up tho. Sammy was on the mike. This was a great solo.
@@pinkiewerewolf yeah Sammy was gonna tour with Night Ranger AND Whitesnake, but then covid hit and ruined everything, including our favorite nearby airsoft arena.
These band members look how they sound, full of energy, and always smiling. They played as if they were performing for a bunch of friends in a big ass back yard. Thank you Van Halen 👏👏👏👏
To me, the energy is the difference between Van Halen with Dave v Sammy. Just see what those two are doing today. Sammy has a passion for life. Dave has a passion for Dave.
Exactly right! They play like a bunch of guys playing for their friends and having the time of their lives! I’m so blessed to have experienced them live over the years.
That solo is so surreal it honestly brings tears to my eyes. One of the greatest things ever to be captured on film. Eddie was able to demonstrate what it means to be a human. Period.
It is usually over dubbed vocally. Ed is in standard 440 tuning here so Sammy has to work hard to keep in key. This version is 100% live. 5150 is a masterpiece in writing a perfect(no such thing really in Rock and Roll) song. Ed has had so much impact on me as a guitarist, it is crazy.
I just blew the f'n door off my bedroom! My son was "Who is that'? I replied "Greatest fucking band EVER"! Now my son is rocking all my VH albums! you got a new fan. Sammy thanks so much , many memories flooding in . # theCircle
Eddie Alex and Michael and Sammy were absolutely hands-down in their prime during this time. You could tell they enjoyed what they were doing, and he couldn’t wipe that smile off his face during the whole show. I love this era of rock ‘n’ roll music. Best times of all. Rock ‘n’ roll comes and goes, but it will never die… We love you Eddie
One their absolute best albums! They genuinely looked happy and fed off eachother. Sammy brought so much love and joy to the band and fans.🤙🏾We miss you Eddie!!!
Your Unboxed album will always bring me the best memories. I was a lucky kid and got a 1987 Conquest TSI sports car when I was in high school (1995). I drove around listening to Unboxed on cassette tape!
My dad got me into Van Halen with the 5150 album in the mid-80's. He also had Unboxed, which made me really appreciate Sammy even more. I love the Van Halen album "Live: Right Here, Right Now" with Sammy playing Give to Live. Love that song! I heard he did Eagle's Fly on other nights. Wish I could've seen that!
Remember the day this came out , it was so perfect. Just a perfect moment in time , to have been 18 on top of the world with best fuckin soundtrack ever ✌️👊🎸 Thank you for this upload brother 👊
Yup. I was 19 or 20 and can remember exactly where I was when I first heard Why Can't This Be Love on the radio. Went, hmmm... this could be a cool record.
Was at the Live Without a Net show that was filmed in New Haven when I was 15 and Ive never looked back! Best song to blow out your speakers right here! VH🤟🏼
It's long overdue to give the Sammy era a deluxe reissue, there's obviously some fantastic live recordings that could go with it. I'm sure it's up to Alex at this point but maybe it's too late. Man I loved the 5150 era
My favorite VH riff. Raises the hair just like the first time I heard it when the album dropped. Back when kids had new music to look forward to. Man I was so lucky to have been a teenager in the 80’s. I really do feel sorry for these kids today.
I remember in 1990 going to a record store in Staten Island and buying a bootleg VHS copy of the Japanese TV broadcast of the entire concert, complete with commercials. Watched it over and over. Amazing performance.
Thank you for posting. "5150" is my favorite Van Halen song. It gets me so pumped! The energy on the stage is insane. The "Live Without a Net" version of this song is the best, imo, but this one is also great. Love you guys! VH is the one constant in my life. RIP EVH.
This one has the better guitar solo, the other one’s ok, just ok by Eddie standards, but this one makes the hairs on the back of the head stand on end, he’s really toying with the beat here, totally unpredictable, syncopated angular phrases into long flowing legato passages, fuck it’s so good.
“ Meet Jane Hathaway!” 😂 God, this was the greatest time of my life. I live in the moment but these memories are eff’in priceless. ❤️ The guys were having so much fun and the interaction with the audience is amazing.

I listened to Van Halen since I was a little kid in the early 1980s. Eddie inspired me to pick up a guitar. Sammy is the best singer they had, and Michael Anthony defined the VH vocal sound across all singers. I bought the 5150 tape when I was like 8 years old from a music store at the mall under the World Trade Center in NYC. I regretfully never got to see Van Halen live. Ever. I wish I could turn the clock back and actually go see at least one show from this timeframe. These were the best years. 5150 is my favorite album of theirs. But the whole catalog brings back so many memories from my youth!

Saw them in ‘82, then a couple of times after ‘86. With Dave, they gave a stunning performance, but in a two-dimensional way. We were the audience, they were the spectacle. With Sammy, it was three dimensional. No distance between the audience and the band, like a small club vibe while at the same time being the most enormous event. Sammy brought out a quality in every aspect of Van Halen that they could never have gotten with Dave. Would love to hear your thoughts.
