Lyrics:
I had this dream where I relished the fray
And the screaming filled my head all day
It was as though I'd been spit here
Settled in, into the pocket
Of a lighthouse on some rocky socket
Off the coast of France, dear
One afternoon four thousand men died in the water here
And five hundred more were thrashing madly
As parasites might in your blood
Now I was in a lifeboat designed for ten and ten only
Anything that systematic would get you hated
It's not a deal nor a test nor a love of something fated
The selection was quick, the crew was picked in order
And those left in the water
Got kicked off our pant leg
And we headed for home
Then the dream ends when the phone rings
"You doing all right?"
He said, "It's out there most days and nights
But only a fool would complain"
Anyway, Susan, if you like
Our conversation is as faint a sound in my memory
As those fingernails scratching on my hull

Someone may disagree, but this song should be considered one of their masterpieces. Gord's ability to tell the story, his intensity and passion sells it. And not to take anything away from the rest of the band, the layering sounds of the guitars just lends to the emotion of the song, making it haunting and heart-wrenching. It will always be one of my favorites.
"someone may disagree" well someone is wrong
I really enjoyed listening to this song! Great music
@@clindsell6111 my buddy who is actually a bigger hipster than me does disagree and he is wrong, this one of my three favorite songs along with Black and Crazy Mary, it will always be in my heart.💗💗💗💗💗💗💗
its also a rarity of a song with no rhyme scheme making it even more epic, thats a near impossible feat when trying to write a cool track
Gordie and the hip rocked are generation, and we will never forget them
Chorus-less songs are rare. Chorus-less songs this good even rarer. Absolutely a masterpiece.
This is a great take. I love the sea shanty like feel, both musically and narratively, of this song. It has a cyclical feel that aggravates the listener with its avoidance of resolution - at least until its end - which is its point. Happy endings are not truth. Which is why I love it.
Wow! When Canadians sing about shipwrecks, they dont screw around!
not even our own shipwrecks!
Narrrrr matey
Or strippers. They love their strippers.......
Good way to remember those who died ina brutal way.
haha yer not kidding. check out The Mary Ellen Carter by Stan Rogers.
Seriously one of the best songs I've ever heard in my sixty five years on this earth. Period.
Glad you are one of the lucky people on earth to experience the Hip!
@@colins7771 From Buffalo dude. We all knew The Hip, from the late eighties, and you're right. The FEW.
Hope you know that I will be teaching my son this wonderful band I’m only 23 but I grew up on the hip I’m also from right across the water from you buddy 🇨🇦😊
iv'e followed these guys from the startand they have never put one bad album out , period i just love them
Still here afloat in May 2024... anyone else?
Yup 👍
You betcha. June 2024.
Barely but the hip helps
July 2024
It’s so gut wrenching to think that there will never be another artist/band who could do what Gord and the Hip did. So thankful I grew up in and could experience this time/band
Amen
Just enjoy what an amazing person gave 🇨🇦 🍁.. the world needs more gord❤
don't worry, there will be, trust me my friend
there won't be another Gord or hip
but there will always be another Legend
Amen to that. The world is shit in a lot of ways, but I saw the Hip from the beginning right to the terrible, beautiful end.
The worst part of a true artist is that they are too unique to be ‘replicated’ by someone/something else. It’s also the best part of being a true artist.
BEST Canadian band EVER. both educational and awesome, only in Canada.... we miss you Gord, you kept your stick on the ice...
Living in Buffalo NY, saw the HIP many times, 1st time I heard a song by them was at a Buffalo Sabres game, song was New Orleans is sinkin, and I was blown away, Gordy Will Never be gone, God Bless The Great White North.
Beautiful sentiment. Couldn't say it any better.👍🇺🇸✌🎼🎶
Dominic in goal, Miroslav satan, and rob ray and of course the hip. Those where some of the best times of my life
I absolutely love how much love the Hip get here in Buffalo! I was fortunate to see them a handful of times, but damn do I wish it was more. RIP Gord and go Sabres!
Thank you... He didn't only represent Canada !
appreciate u brother ... much love from Toronto , Canada ... Gord loved our American brothers believe me.. I still play the Woodstock Footage brings tears to my eyes
Love the way the bass guitar sounds in this song. Amazing how a song with no chorus, no obvious hooks, and a slightly unconventional song structure can be one of the best songs ever written.
Most people don't know this but Gord Sinclair the bass player was the key individual to forming the basis of so many of their songs that would have never come to be or seen the light of day if it wasn't for him writing the baselines "first" then the rest of the song came from that. Not to take away from the other members because you need all that as well and without Gords haunting lyrics you know when you combine that with everything it just made for a perfect bowl of stew
@@natevm7888 yep, Gord is the best songwriter of all time
absolutely
It's poetry.
I just heard this song for the first time after searching for it for probably 30 years.
i remember seeing this video about a 3rd in on mtv before my dad sent me to bed.
i asked if i could watch the rest of this song he said no. Its stuck in my head my whole life and ididnt know who the band was or what the song was called.
i spent half an hour again tonight googling drowning men. And cold water and ships sinking finally, to end up here. 😊
Its goes without saying the song was worth the wait. And i remember now why that half a music video all those years ago imprinted on me.
Thankyou to the band. Now to listen to all your other songs.
Hope you enjoy...Alberta Canada❤s Gord
If you are Canadian , this song is part of who you are to the world.
Wow cool story thanks
Congratulations on this discovery, awesome story! Do yourself a favour and look up the albums: Up to Here and Road Apples to start. After that your will be hooked...
They have so many good song bro. I'm gland you found it.
There are so many things I love about this song. I love how it ebbs and swells like the ocean itself along with Gord's singing. I love that it has no chorus. I Iove the raw emotion in the lyrics and their delivery... almost as if it was straight stream of conscience as opposed to written words. Just an amazing song.
The last 30 seconds or so of the song is a perfect musical expression for something slowly sinking to the bottom of the sea.
That's what I see in my mind every time I hear it
This video still kills/chills/thrills even to the marrow of my very soul. RIP, Gord. You were just the best...
WOW! Great Comment. Poetic.......Gord would approve!✌🇺🇸🌹
The Tragically Hip is a car ride for the mind, it will take you anywhere you want to go.
Profoundly true :)
How can this only have 5.7 million views. Crap that modern artist do have over a billion. Makes no sense.
It absolutely don't
most underrated hit of the 90's...a true masterpiece
Rest in peace Gord, your legend will live long. You were a true Canadian hero and your music made me proud of my Canadian heritage!
As a Canadian, I'm damn proud of this band, and do wish they had more exposure world wide to prove how great Canadian music can be... but at the same time I'm happy to keep them pretty much to ourselves!
Thankfully I live in Buffalo NY and we loved The Hip! Long live Gord!
The best band of the last 20 years, bar none. And I'm not even Canadian. Amazing, and even better live. x
but you wanna be.
Best band IN CANADA in the last 20 year IMO, but the 90s had too many great bands the USA. That still doesn't take anything away from what The Hip did!
RIP Gord Downie
The only one that comes close, imo, is Pearl Jam. And Eddie really loved the Hip...
Thank you Mike Bubbins, means alot to us Canadians...xxx
@@evanb1470 my two favorite bands are Pearl Jam and The Hip, pretty clear choice.
Canadian poetry for our time. Deserves to be on school curriculums, it will, just wait. Another 10-20 years.
Yeah dude. Gordie's more than just a frontman. He's a classic Canadian wordsmith. One who has managed to reach far more Canuck minds than any of the Can-Lit authors ever have. God bless him for giving Canadian rock n roll fans a wealth of Canadian iconography. Gord Downie for Canadian poet laureate! Let's start a petition.
gonna be taught like terry fox is
I have made it my opening unit with my grade 8 students this year. "Exploring Canada's Identity through The Tragically Hip". Just starting out and the kids are eating it up.
Anne-Marie Height - David Leeder MS (1544) I would love to know how you are doing it? I think teaching this to my intermediates would be awesome!
I'm teaching each song as an historical document
This song tells the story from such a visceral perspective. It is a painting in my head.
Not many songs send shivers down my spine, but this is definitly one of them! The lyrics are so powerful and deep, its almost impossible not to get sucked in to the song. Gotta love The Hip! I wasnt even born when they started and im a huge fan. They definitly make me proud of being Canadian.
The hip are a beautiful secret
Roy Glenn tell everyone you know hah
I'm actually glad these guys never broke big in America. They are all ours. Gord Downie should be made Canada's poet laureate. let's start a petition. He's our generation's Al Purdy.
The Hip is ours. I don't want to share! Have we not given enough of ourselves to show others how great Canada is?
Buffalo has got em sorry bud
@@mikekennedy8318 nice words mike, the hip will always be ares
Bless them and sending love and light
Xx merry Christmas and keep safe
Yes Canada needs to keep others out
I'm crushed. I can't imagine how his family/bandmates feel. You are forever loved, Gord...
They are crushed, and that extends as Gord is loved by many and...some close to Gord did not even attend last night, they chose to stay away and cry, their words...thanks
the circle was hurt, it still sucks a lot. i miss the guys playing.
This is a dark, heavy song. Go to the very end, Gord Downie.
Their last show in Kingston will be a dark sad, yet joyous day for Canada tomorrow.
Agreed. Celebratory yet sad. Kudos to the CBC for showing it in its entirety.
Some crazy metal band should cover this
@@mowbros769 I'd love to hear Release The Archers do this!
@@mowbros769 that would be fucking sick
When the Hip played this song on SNL in the 90's the American public wasn't ready for these lyrics.
They are just too good for a lot of people to understand basically.
I am glad I come from a US border town. I can see Canada from my front steps. I heard them so much that I was surprised that more people in the US didnt know of them.
I love how you get so immersed in the story you almost forget it was a dream, until the phone rings.
But, it wasn't a dream at all.
An overloaded super ferry capsized.
He was reliving the event in his mind. Survivors guilt is some powerful shit.
😢
Hands down one of the best songs I've ever heard. We're rooting for you, Gord.
This is goosebump material, what is it with water and mankinds innate soul and fear of it, tales of floods and drowning really can shake one. This is powerful as Mr Lightfoot's Edmund Fitzgerald, just epicness! RIP amazing man.
So glad they played my favorite song for the last show. A perfect mix of music, poetry and showmanship. My kids will grow up listening to these boys.
I honestly thought the second encore was where it was at. Nautical Disaster, Scared, and then Grace, Too completely blew me away. Then again Locked in the Trunk of Car, Gift Shop, and Ahead by a Century was a pretty surreal way to end it. The whole show was absolutely sensational.
+nickzivs it was the fucking greatest night of music in Canadian history.
Agreed. What an emotional roller coaster they took us on.
I was there!!!!!!
Diditallforthexp the hip a perfect symphony!!
My favourite Hip song ever....stop the world when this song plays (Remembered when Dan Ackroyd introduced The Hip on SNL to play this WAY BACK)
Yes, I do. It was supposed to be The Hip's big intro to America and some blame their choice to play this song, which was rather obscure at the time, for them not catching on south of the border. I just re-watched their performance and Sheldon Cooper could have easily subbed in for Gord as far as looks and mannerisms go. LOL
@@marnieocarroll7924 Or Rowan Atkinson
Being from California I have never heard of this band''' Nice music'' I heard the sad news about the singer'' I take off my hat to the band and to the great country to my north called Canada''' Good luck Gordie'''
well written and appreciated.
If you wanna get into The Hip some good songs to start off with is ''Bobcaygeon'', ''Blow at High Dough'', ''Looking for a Place to Happen'', ''Little Bones'', ''New Orleans is Sinking''.
Kind words. Thank you.
Poets is also really good
+Sean Glover gift shop
You know why Hip views aren't in the 10's of millions? Cause Gordie didn't sell out to the MAN! No regrets! Much respect!
And think of all the poor souls that will never understand how good a band they are missing out on.
Ummm- the last tour was not Attainable for the average fan and in that moment no one’s mad we get it but never say never
Give me some time, I'll get them up there myself lol
Canada's U2, without the big headed fake frontman...pure shame they weren't just as big if not bigger. Rip Gordie. ♥
He DIED doing what he LOVED! I HOPE GORDIE'S IN HEAVEN!
Yank here. Yeah, we’re not supposed to get the Hip, but as a kid who grew up for some time in the wilds here, I get their stuff. This song is so fucking powerful. Gord deserves all the love and respect he’s been given. R.I.P.
Probably one of the most haunting set of lyrics I've heard; and yet it's one of my favourite songs. Thanks for the music boys!
iam a PROUD CANADIAN AND LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!
I'm a pretty decent and prolific songwriter, but I stand in awe of Gord's lyrical abilities as well as his ability to blend his unique poetic insights with raw emotion. The world will never see his like again and it's our loss.
Starts sentence with "Im a pretty decent and PROLIFIC (wow) songwriter"........ And, squeezes it in whilst talking about Gord Downie. Maybe find a way to give credit where credit is due, all while not giving credit where it doesnt belong....
Absolute masterpiece. This and Locked in the Trunk of a Car are my two favourites...and they played them almost back to back in the encore tonight. What an incredible concert..touched every Canadians heart. Will always love the Hip. They are Canada.
This song still gives me goosebumps every time.
Gord's voice has always given me chills. Such an incredible voice. Today it gives me those chills in a different way.
Me too l love his voice and lyrics
So, I was stuck at work for the Kingston show. Hooked my phone up to the overhead and started listening, jammed out...then this came on, my very favorite Hip song. I had no choice. Ran back to the phone, and CRANKED the volume, to the point where people down the block could hear it. Whole neighborhood came out to party. I'll never forget it. I'll never forget Gord.
This song is a masterpiece.
They have an incredible library of songs but I tend to gravitate back to Nautical Disaster as their best
ME TOO!!!!!! Great song to dance "angry" to. 💃🌹✌
I agree
I dont know, I've asked my self many times and always just give up they have too many great songs imo
@@kristinesmart24 love it, there is something to it that is hard to put into, I remember this first time I heard it and saying OMG play that again.
Same. I think it's their best written
Always love connecting with music from my mother land, not driving up the 401 eastbound anymore. Missing Canada some days. The Hip still rock 🙏🎵♥️🕉
Godspeed Gord. Love Canada.
Can't help playing this song on and on again since wednesday. From France with love. Rest in Peace, Gord.

We are grateful to have such a great band. The words he sang...
And thank you from 🇨🇦
It was as though I'd been spit here, settled in. Into the pocket of a lighthouse on some rocky socket, off the coast of France, dear.
A song with no structured verses and chorus...only THIS band can pull it off with extreme emotion and passion. Goose bumps every single time I hear this song.
Keep fighting Gordie!!!

I had this dream....where cancer didn't exist 😪
i'm so devastated...
Remember this, The Heart Cancer doesn't exist.
that's the most intense thing I have ever read.
Tragically, as long as pharmaceutical corporations exist, cancer will never be cured. It would be bad for business.
+alden21 What a ridiculous thing to say. Whoever comes up with a cure would absolutely rake it in.
My heart hurts every time. This man and the band is amazing! He passed in December. Love you!
My favourite song of all time. I'm so glad they played it at the final show. One of my first concerts was a Hip show. It was at Assiniboia Downs in Winnipeg. I went with my dad and was about 12 years old. Boy did I feel cool wearing my new Hip shirt to school the next day. That was 20 years ago. Thanks THT, for some of the greatest songs ever written and memories I will cherish forever. Love you guys.
love you for sharing.
Hope you Thanked your Dad, he has to be a cool dude for sure.....
Fiddler’s green and Grace too brought me to tears while watching the final concert
My favourite concert ever was the hip at the downs that night. Worked my way to the front by the time the hip started. The skies opened up and delivered a deluge from the heavens while the hip pounded through their sets. Against the front row railing I made out with an amazing and beautiful girl whose presence I had not experienced before or since while a soaked Gord and the boys splashed through the puddles onstage. How they were not electrocuted or had the concert stopped is a question I have pondered since that evening. I have no expectations of a concert ever providing to me more than 10% of what the hip did for me that night.
I too am from Winnipeg and was at that concert...Cool
Sending love to heaven from Philly! You're better off up there Gordie! One day I'll join you and we'll go out for a rip!
this song has been breaking my heart for well over twenty years and it doesn't give any signs of ever stopping.
Rest in peace Gord. You were genious and you wrote the soundtrack for many Canadians lives. You will be forever remembered.
My favorite hip song I play it endless times on my drums rest in peace Gordy.
God damn, this song gets me every. single. time! Something beyond the lyrics and that soul chilling chord progression. Just the feeling of it approached Gordon Lightfoot's _Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald_ . You just feel the cold hopelessness in your soul.
The Attack at Dieppe
All Canadians should mourn and praise what was accomplished that day
thoughts are with you and your families 😖🙏
Like a Canadian "Stairway to Heaven", this song is genius.
better than stairway
Emotionally
You frightened me with this song deep to my bones. I can't explain why. but you frightened me more, when i heard about your cancer desease. i feel so sorry about you & your fellowship. godspeed.
What an expressive voice, miss you Gord. What a powerful song 👋🤘🤘
I mostly liked the Hip, maybe kind of off and on, but this is a song I take to my grave. Lyrically and musically as magical and deep as the greatest songs from Neil Young, Springsteen, Joni Mitchell and many other great writers. Everything in it is submerged like a monster from the depths itching to explode. And it blasts your emotions to bits, wondering what motivated its creation, what it is really about. I have to go into recovery mode every time I hear it. A flat out masterpiece of lyrical songwriting. Still an overwhelming listen many years later.
Was introduced to this musical phenomenon by my ex-wife. Aside from our children the 2nd best thing I took away form the marriage is my love for T-Hip. When together we saw them (my first show) at Bolton Valley, VT in the early 2000’s and then saw Gordie doing his Solo deal at Higher Ground when it was a small intimate venue in Winooski, VT. Then our last show sadly was I believe the last show they played at the Memorial auditorium in Burlington, VT. Bummed I couldn’t see more shows because the shows never disappointed. You are one of the best bands of this century.
R.I.P GORDIE, you are missed exponentially.
I know the difference, but I am listening to this two days after lives were lost with the sinking of a Spanish fishing boat off our Eastern Coast. God rest their souls, Gord's, and everyone else we lose Peace..

One of the most profound songs in the history of rock music. My favorite Hip song ever! RIP Gord.
Just came back from juno beach. This song was playing non stop in my head. Tears in my eyes though whole time. Thanks lads there is nothing more more Canadian than the hip except the heroes that landed on Juno on the 6th of June 1944. Heroes i salute you
The bass is UTTERLY ridiculous in this song. Damn.
What an amazing band. I seen them at the outer harbor with flogging Molly probably 8 or 10 years ago. Rip Gord.
Where is Outer Harbor? Nova Scotia?
I’ve been a huge fan since I was a kid. These guys brought all of us together. Whether it’s canadians, or from anywhere. We all became family. We’re all on the same team. Rest In Peace, gord. You’re very missed.
I listened to this song over and over in the 90s. My favorite of the Hip. Introduced to the band as an American in Japan. Terrific artistry. I miss Gordo.
Absolute perfection. So glad Gord didn't have to see what the world has become. RIP Sir.
Courage, Gord!
grace, too..
Rest in peace Gord. Legends never die ❤️
I love how this song is basically just "Yes, Susan, I remember what we talked about, I'm not likely to forget it anytime soon, so stop asking."
A story about the Halifax disaster, all at the same time as being a boat or a microphone stand, it's a beauty of dreams designed to trigger your ear...RIP Gordie we know now, we hear you
Masterpiece. Band. I always come back to this. It has its place but still reaches back into tradition. Poetry and music.
Then the dream ends
When the phone rings.
"You doing alright?"

Most days, and nights.
But only. A fool. Would. Complain."
Love you, Gordie. Fight this.

By far my favourite hip song.
Heard New Orleans is Sinking on the radio back in the 90's here in Texas. Been hooked ever since. No one can build momentum and suspense in a song like Gordie and the Hip
I miss them so much. Used to wait every year to see them. Didn't matter if it was in Montreal or Vermont.....I went to see them! 20+ times!
Tragically hip was so underrated (world wide). if only everyone felt the same.

To all of those talking about how it will be in English classes in the future, it just came up in a poetry unit assignment in my class. :)

All the love you've poured into this great country is coming right back your way.
RIP Gord. This song gave us extra goosebumps on this sad morning.
what an amazing final show!! Long Live The Hip and Canada!
the lyrics to this song are amazingly vivid.
It is one of the all-time greatest songs. By any songwriter.
Oddly, one of Gord's other best songs - "Fifty Mission Cap" - is the least vivid thing possible. It packs a shocking punch in so few words. It's like Hemingway.
www.bbc.co.uk/history/worldwars/wwtwo/lancastria_01.shtml
50 Mission Cap is perhaps my favorite Hip song. This one, and Grace, Too are right up there as well.
He paints such incredible pictures, in multiple timelines. Between "kicked off our pant leg" and "fingernails scratching on my hull", I am there and terrified. I wonder if he was inspired by another Canadian epic tune on the same subject.
Gord would make the times we are going through better, just by being around. Love ya Gord.
Amazing band, definitely underrated in America.
Unlike Nickelback, Avril Lavigne, Celine, Shania, David Foster, etc, I think TTH quite actively made the decision *not* to move south. Plus many of their lyrical references are based on obscure Canadian history and geography. ❤eg wth is a corduroy road? 🤓
