I’m there with 17 shows under my belt. One of the hardest days of my life was watching the final concert…and not sure if anyone realized this…they closed with this tune because the last lyrics ever sang on stage was “disappointing you is getting me down” the whole song was an apology to the fact he was on his way out. Thankful for all the shows and Canada days I had with my friends following these guys around everywhere. Fucking wish it was 2002 again and in violent light had just come out. 20 years flies man.
I bought Trouble At The Henhouse the day it released. Ahead By A Century immediately became my favourite Hip song ever. When they played it as their last song ever, for some reason I felt honoured, like they were doing it for me. And I bawled like a baby. . .
A friend of mine was a HUGE Hip fan (his name is Hugh, so 'HUGE' is perfect). He went to see them play whenever they were playing anywhere within a couple of hundred miles or so of metro Detroit. He kept count, and I know he was well over 100 shows. He passed away on New Years Day. I've always played this song in standard tuning and 'cheated', so I decided to learn it properly in that open tuning. I have it down, but my voice is still a bit nasally from getting over a bad cold. I'll be doing my own solo version of it very soon for Hugh, with a little bit of extra riffing at the beginning on that open D chord.
Apparently this is the first song I heard as a baby, and also I'm deathly allergic to hornets, and the first person in my family from this century. This song reminds me of how special it is to be alive. I hope I can be even a tiny fraction as ahead as the legendary Tragically Hip.

People who ask why aren't these guys big in the US just don't get it. They are truly and utterly a Canadian band. They represent the pathetic sliver of genuine Canadian culture that still exists in a country dominated by a massive cultural juggernaut to the south. They write songs about Canada and our shared experience and they rarely pander to American audiences. Fifty Mission Cap, Bobcaygeon, Wheat Kings, Courage, At the 100th Meridian and many more of their songs are about Canadians and Canada. They are just for you Canada and that's an incredibly rare gift. Don't question it.
My beef with them not being big in the U.S. is more about how, we'll get blamed for Bieber, Celine Dion, Bryan Adams, when that's U.S.''s fault! They could have picked good music to import, they chose to ignore that Hip, Matt Good, Smalls, and so many other amazing Canadian bands. I just watched the final episode of "Anne with an E". The series is extremely brilliant, inspired and mesmerizing. The photography is very artistic, the screenplay is so brilliant that I would like to shake the hands of whoever wrote it. The series began with a beautiful story that unfolded into an epos. It is the story of a very brave and special young girl, an orphan that was bullied but managed to overcome extreme challenges through her love for language, her dreamy nature and the brave visions she had of herself. It is an ode to the weird, the weak, the unfortunate that finally overcome and triumph. So eloquent, so elegant, so elating. I will not go into details because I don't want to spoil the series for anyone. I hope there will be a season four. The final episode made me go through all possible and different kinds of devastating, desperate, elevating, romantic and ecstatic emotions that a human being can have. "Anne with and E" is a work of art. A true masterpiece. From screenplay to directing, to acting. Unfortunately, I just found out that the show was cancelled. That is often the fate of qualitative works in the superficial world that we live in. Everything depends on bucks. I can only thank the authors who did fulfil all the promises the show made, they gave the audience closure and what a closure it was!
hoping at some point CBC will have an Anne with an E movie. Maybe catch up with them two or three years after the end of the last episode. Anything is possible.
@@tomtom9879 certainly a tough choice for me! I read the whole series and you get to watch her kids grow up, too. It’s a beautiful circle of life, talks about pertinent issues, and remains realistic and emotional
I grew up in Buffalo, so I was lucky enough to be exposed to the Hip, but foolish enough not to be a huge fan in the 90s. Needless to say I eventually wised up. Its hard not to get choked up listening to them. Sometimes people touch you in a way that you could never expect; Gord Downie was one of those people. I never met him, but I love him. He makes me want to be a better person. Much the way that Jim Morrison felt when he witnessed the Natives on dawn's highway I feel a piece of Gord lives on in my soul, and for that I'm forever grateful.
Here is my Hip story. In the mid-90's in Erie, PA, I discovered I could get FM96 out of London on the radio. Anyway, heard this song one time that I never heard before about some guy who won the Leafs the Cup and they didn't win another until 1962. Being a hockey fan growing up watching Hockey Night in Canada (again out of Ch. 10 in London), I was like - this is great. I thought I never saw someone say that before. Singing about hockey. That's outstanding, So I jumped right in and started my love of the Hip as much as an American guy could. Was so excited to see them both times they came to Erie. Not sure why I felt compelled to post this now but there it is. What a ride!
@Hit Girl Thank you for the suggestion. I shall definitely go and have a listen. Music is a great passion of mine and to find new artists who can inspire me is better than gold.
@@nicholasnaicker5621 I do agree with you. Especially the bands where the lyrics have deep meaning, and inspires me. Not this cotton candy mass produced nonsense.
I'm from MI, and at work we listen to a Canadian radio station. When Tal Bachman's She's So High comes on, my co-worker gets all jazzed up. He does the same when LEN's Steal My Sunshine comes on. But this ..... this is MY song. :) Love it.
Being of the age to appreciate the imagery presented by the video director throughout, I am most struck by the monochrome image of 'the back of Dad's head' from the perspective of the back seat in an Oldsmobile land yacht @ 1:16 Terrific song. Great musicians. Thanks for giving music to the memories.
How did these guys not take off after "Grace, Too" on Saturday Night Live? One of the best SNL performances I've ever seen (for the first time yesterday). Used to own a cd shop on University Wisconsin campus in the early 90's...was playing "Trouble at the Henhouse", and in walked a drop-dead Canadian girl, who approached me and gave me a kiss on the cheek in appreciation of having the Hip on the house stereo. Became aware of Canada's love for this band at that moment. Have since come to know this is (was) one of the best bands in the world. Period. Canada: I shall forever respect my neighbors to the north for giving us this gift. Thank you Kingston.
Just re-stumbled on this band. Now I'm balling my damn eyes out. My Mom is currently sick with stage 4 breast cancer from head to toe. Prayers for him and his family:(
I am stunned by that news. I'm a Yank, and a huge fan since '94. Always hoped they would be more appreciated in the States, but it never happened. Oh well, that's everyones' loss down here. Keep fightin' Gord, we need you and the band around for a few more decades anyway. You Canadians are very lucky to claim them as yours.
Sadly, I’m a little behind but just finished watching the last episode of Anne with an E last night with my husband, on Netflix. Every time we watched an episode I was haunted by the fantastic opening song by The Tragically Hip. So I decided to look it up because I loved the music. Now I’m deeply saddened about the death of Gorden and the ending of Anne with an E. I definitely am going to search for the CD by Tragically Hip. Just love their music. It’s really unfair how some really great bands don’t become internationally famous. I have a heavy heart for the ending of Anne with an E and the passing of a brilliant artist in The Tragically Hip band. I’m 72 yrs old, and life can be so unfair. At least we can still listen to the great music. RIP
As I lay here in bed in NYC I am thankful for my experiences in Toronto mainly because I found the Tragically Hip. The song writing and heartfelt style of music makes me smile every time I listen.
"and disappointing you is getting me down." Who hasn't said THAT to themselves, at some point? I cannot believe this gong is 22 years old because, well, it is timeless...
Pure magic. They wrote the soundtrack of our lives. Thank you Gordon and boys. Vancouver's second concert was one of the most ethereal experiences of my life. Thank you so much.
The Tragically Hip ruled rock and never got the attention deserved given they did have the visual noise to market them. They were poets with instruments, especially when they rock. It's sweet they finally found fame via this heartfelt song. Now let's rock!
They played at my high school (Philemon Wright) prom in June 1987. We were ahead, if not by a century, at least by two or three years in booking the Hip.
One of the greatest voices and bands ever..American here and I have always been impressed by so many great Canadian singer/poets.. music from the heart…Go Canada, you’re the best!🇨🇦🇨🇦.
I'm from Florida and although I heard of them in the early 90s, I am only now discovering how deep their catalog of music is. They have such a wonderfully unique sound and I can see why they are so loved. I wish more Americans knew just how important they were/are/will probably forever be. I love their music!!
I remember when the video first came out and started getting rotation on MuchMusic. I knew it was special then, both the song and the video. It made me stop dead in my tracks. Got the VHS ready, hit record at the right moment. Stop, rewind, play. Stop, rewind, play. Stop, rewind, play.
Gord Downey is our Unofficial Poet Laureate. ... just heard this morning that he's got terminal brain cancer ... but the Hip is going on tour. ... amazing man... GREAT Artist.
This was the first song I had truly enjoyed from The Hip (given my young age at the time) and introduced me to their huge library of successful singles on the airwaves from beforehand. Such a sountrack for this country. I personally was so happy this was their finale song last night, that and incredibly sad because I knew it was the end. What an incredible group, what an incredible night.
This film clip is so Canadian... From the coffee mug to the car seats to the old ski doo next to the old house. I live in Ontario in the late Nineties and this video sums it up.. Now back on Oz. RIP Gordo.
Getting nostalgic about childhood summers, my father would listen to a bit of the discography on long car rides up to Sault Ste. Marie; It's so fitting for Canadian back-country.
I can only image what it would have been like to have been in Kingston but i am so grateful to have seen this final concert live with the rest of Canada. Music like the Hip's helped me deal with some very dark times and can only hope that knowing how many people's who's lives were touched by Gord and the rest of the band can be a source of comfort in the future.
I was in the square that night. It almost didn't seem real. Everyone so happy and so sad all at once. It seems like yesterday, but it's almost 3 years since that show now.
The Hip has a new American fan in me! So sad about what happened with Gord- I wish I had known about The Hip while he was still alive. May he Rest In Peace.

Please read the book!
There’s actually tons of books and the follow Anne until she’s had children and then they follow he children’s lives!
hoping at some point CBC will have an Anne with an E movie. Maybe catch up with them two or three years after the end of the last episode. Anything is possible.
@@cocopuffmusic
I read the book. I thought Anne with and E is even better actually!!
I fear this is one feverish dream we shall not awake from
Thank you Gord, for all you've done for music, for Canada and for me
Here is my Hip story.
I just found this band. Glad I did, because the music speaks to me. By the way, I am a South African.
@Hit Girl Thank you for the suggestion. I shall definitely go and have a listen. Music is a great passion of mine and to find new artists who can inspire me is better than gold.
It's great to discover their great music!
Same here... From SA but now Canada is home... This band reminds me of the bands back home
@@nicholasnaicker5621 I do agree with you. Especially the bands where the lyrics have deep meaning, and inspires me. Not this cotton candy mass produced nonsense.
@@TheZaniQ It certainly is not that! Gord and the guys could put so much meaning into two lines, it is amazing. ❤
The Umbrella Academy!!!
Me too😊
''... and disapointing you is getting me down...''
Geddy Lee Brought me here by saying it was his favourite song. I agree with him
Another texan here, this is the greatest. Thanks canada pour la mielluer musique
Anne was ahead by a century
We all miss you so much 💖
I'm from MI, and at work we listen to a Canadian radio station. When Tal Bachman's She's So High comes on, my co-worker gets all jazzed up. He does the same when LEN's Steal My Sunshine comes on. But this ..... this is MY song. :) Love it.
Our band Last Shot played this last Thursday night and the audience went wild. Rest In Peace Gord Downie. I will never forget meeting you.
Being of the age to appreciate the imagery presented by the video director throughout, I am most struck by the monochrome image of 'the back of Dad's head' from the perspective of the back seat in an Oldsmobile land yacht @ 1:16
Terrific song. Great musicians. Thanks for giving music to the memories.
I have lived outside of Canada for 20 years, and nothing speaks to me more or makes me feel more Canadian than listening to the Tragically Hip.
+PeanutBuddha Your comment brings a tear to my eye..Nothing like Canada!!!
The same reason Queen's SNL performance didn't make them take off
Hey Lance you're welcomed. Drop by sometime We would love to have you. Yes I'm from Kingston.
Did that girl give a fuck about hockey?
no problem dude, also you're welcome for Rush
I'm 40! I don't understand why I never heard this song before Anne with an E. As someone else said: the only intro I never skip. I love it!!!
this is the most comfort song for me EVER
Just re-stumbled on this band. Now I'm balling my damn eyes out. My Mom is currently sick with stage 4 breast cancer from head to toe. Prayers for him and his family:(
prayers for your mom too daveyb01... i know how it feels
damn man.... Just think that your mom and Gord can rock on forever in bliss soon.
My prayers are with you bro.
me is sad for u dont give up me pray for u xxx
3 years ago I lost my mom to the same thing. be strong and prayers and best wishes for you, unit mom and family
Love that this was used as theme for 'Anne With An 'E''.
Hello how are you doing
"and disappointing you is getting me down." Who hasn't said THAT to themselves, at some point? I cannot believe this gong is 22 years old because, well, it is timeless...
one of the finer works of 20th century canadian poetry. thanks, gord, for a career of exceptional artistry.
I found out about this band because Geddy Lee said they were really good. And they are. Greetings from Chile
Pure magic. They wrote the soundtrack of our lives. Thank you Gordon and boys. Vancouver's second concert was one of the most ethereal experiences of my life. Thank you so much.
Great word, I had to look it up, but glad I did.
Trevor Theobald Thank you. I'm glad you did, too.
R.I.P. Gord my friend.
The Tragically Hip ruled rock and never got the attention deserved given they did have the visual noise to market them. They were poets with instruments, especially when they rock. It's sweet they finally found fame via this heartfelt song. Now let's rock!
talking heads drowned them out ......sad
They played at my high school (Philemon Wright) prom in June 1987. We were ahead, if not by a century, at least by two or three years in booking the Hip.
One of the greatest voices and bands ever..American here and I have always been impressed by so many great Canadian singer/poets.. music from the heart…Go Canada, you’re the best!🇨🇦🇨🇦.
Thank you Gord Downie & The Tragically Hip. Your music will live on forever. God Bless you
There are a few songs that bring me to tears pretty much every time I hear them. This is one of them.
I'm from Florida and although I heard of them in the early 90s, I am only now discovering how deep their catalog of music is.
They have such a wonderfully unique sound and I can see why they are so loved. I wish more Americans knew just how important they were/are/will probably forever be. I love their music!!
Long live Gordon Downie.. You will forever be a Canadian LEGEND! ✌️
Same here, lost track of it over the years. Then it’s shows up on Umbrella Academy!!! I freak out during the scene and my wife thinks I’m crazy.
Love this guys lyrics. Some Canadian dude, went by the name of Mold in Everquest, got me into the band. Thanks from an appreciative American, Mold.
+ellrick Canada is so cool!
I never skipped it. Not once.
Anne with an E 😭❤️
❤❤❤❤❤
Umbrella Academy ☂️❤
This film clip is so Canadian... From the coffee mug to the car seats to the old ski doo next to the old house. I live in Ontario in the late Nineties and this video sums it up.. Now back on Oz. RIP Gordo.
Getting nostalgic about childhood summers, my father would listen to a bit of the discography on long car rides up to Sault Ste. Marie; It's so fitting for Canadian back-country.
Watching from SSM right now :)
Watching from Sault Ste. Marie! :D
I tear up anytime this song comes on … rip gord a true Canadian icon
From Nova Scotia 15 years old love Tragically Hip 🇨🇦
Same here, From Dartmouth!
Good 4 u kid.
one of the greatest canadian song writers ever. Get well gord
Anne with and E really make me feel awesome it really is the definition of freedom
Hip's final concert tonight in Kingston Ontario! August 20th 2016.
It was beautiful. Still tears of joy and sadness flowing
_“It would be hard for me now, at this age and stage, to leave a song without a glimmer of hope… I always like to have a glimmer of hopefulness, even in collapse.”_ - Gord Downie, 2009
Thanks for everything, Gord.
So much good music comes out of Canada 🇨🇦 full of soul ❤❤❤
I cry eveytime I hear this song. It is a masterpiece.
Miss you man - the Hip all day today!
ANNE with E and umberella academy got me here love this song now
Ann with an E brought me here❤
I love the Tragically Hip my heart broke the day Gord Downey passed away. A true Canadian legend and hero. RIP Gord 😢😢
Umbrella Academy brought me here aswell, made me think about all the songs I love that I first heard on film/TV - e.g. Super Rich Kids, Song To The Siren , Oblivion by Grimes
This song came on last night, and.....damn.
