In my opinion that Titan front skid plate did its job beautifully just as intended. The most underrated truck in the segment. How about a head to head with a Tundra TRD Pro on the same course?

    • @karlschauff7989

The Titan deserves the rating it got since it came out. Nissan chickened out on building the Titan Warrior, and then they completely failed on the launch of the truck. They didn't have an extended (king) cab option available for the first year and the majority of trucks they were building had that awful Cummins V8 that was plagued with bugs. They had a Pro-4x trim but that massive front overhang of the pre-facelifted Titan really hurt its capability off-road. When they first tested it off road, the truck was getting its chin hung up all the time. I'm glad Nissan addressed some of those issues with the facelift, but they really need a Titan Warrior.

I quickly let off and after it slowed down to about 45 it started working again. It would always gear hunt between 9th and 10th. Wife and I both regretted taking that thing on the trip instead of her sequoia. We had actually thought about an expedition but after driving it we decided we likes the sequoia better. Plus there is alot less to go wrong. Only plus was the expedition got about 2-3 mpg better highway mileage. City driving was about the same.

So I'm sorry to fact check you guys I do love everything TFL but you have always been hard on the Nissans. They are just better trucks and value for the money. If you spec a Pro-4x Titan with just the leather and convenience package and then spec out a Trail Boss exactly the same they are within $500 of each other. To be exact the Titan is $56,986 out the door and the Trail Boss is $56,476. In your video here the Titan went up the razor rocks easier than any other vehicle you've done ever which you guys kind of just gloss over. Also if you wanted to do a leveling kit on the Titan like the Trail Boss you can find one for $50 to $100 bucks then install yourself in less then two hours. So let me get this straight in your own words, better more powerful engine, better locker, better suspension feel and shocks, better skid plate, better tire size, and yet you still pick the inferior truck. I just don't understand where this constant negative against Nisssn commentary comes from. I have a 2017 Titan Pro-4x and a 2007 Xterra Offroad manual. I would love to come on the show some time in the future and set the record right about why Nissan has and still does make the best Trucks for the money. By the way the Xterra has 270,000 miles on it and has never had any major work done to it. It still goes up and down I70 everyday for work as well. I love your guys shows and mean no ill will.

Titan seems to be the far superior truck. I would take that one and give it a 2 inch lift - done. One of the main things I can't get over on the Trail Boss is the looks. Even at this trim level, it looks cheap, inside and out. And for that, it is way too expensive. And yes, this locker is a pain. There are situations where you either go up or you are done. With that waiting time to establish grip, it's not worth more than a good traction control.

I've owned Chevrolet trucks many years. It makes sense to me that forcing the G80 to lock just before you hit a known tough spot on trail makes it easier to control. And with my experience it doesn't disengage until the truck hits a higher speed (approx 20mph) than the speed you use rock crawling.

I think it also disengages when you you let off the gas or come to a stop. Then the tire has to spin again to lock. So, if you keep the pressure on it will stay locked. This is just from my experience. Would be an interesting test to find out.

I have noticed that Tommy often refers to spring rate when he talks about shocks. This makes it unclear for me what he is actually referring to because spring rate is defined as amount of weight needed to compress a spring one inch. Whereas, shocks dampen the compression and rebound of the suspension and is refered to as compression and rebound damping. I believe what Tommy means to say with his comments about shocks relates to the effectiveness of the shocks in controlling suspension compression and rebound in an appropriate manner.

Most people who offroad a Chevy pickup full size do not rock crawler but they will be doing other types of off-roading hunting, fishing, farming, and perhaps mud,
sand, wooded trails. I would think a 5.3 would get the job done. I also have an 89 S10Blazer that we put Rancho shocks on and do the other types of offroading and it is a good truck. The Chevy locking rear has gotten the job done in my Blazer in mud, sand, snown, hill climbing, water crossing while hunting and getting through sand going fishing around the beach. Rock crawling is more sport offroading ... For that a Jeep Wrangler or Zr2 Chevy Colorado. Looks like Jeep attacks rock better straight on while Chevy takes the side approach .. Based on off road history of both manufactures of GM & Nissan, I believe that Nissan Titan is more capable of the Chevy Silverado. Manual rear locker is plus for the Titan compare to the automatic and I know fact that cost of automated locker is far cheaper to manufacture than normal locker. Regarding the approach angle, front, rear and brake angle it could easily be solved by 2 inch lift. Nissan & Toyota is far better is terms of Off Road as they do live for the challenge over and over for years. They do have far better life in terms of engine reliability, cooling system, CV, low gear, shocks, etc... I do believe that Chevy Silverado is well equipped Off Road with ground clearance and better tires but in the long run Chevy cannot live as long as Nissan Titan or Patrol same story as Toyota Tundra or the legend Land Cruiser. Its just my opinion based on what I have driven and see specially that I live in Yemen located in the southern tip of the Arabian peninsula and SUV or 4wd in general is common here at home...
