  • In signs of stress we explore and identify stress symptoms to help answer the question: Are you stressed? While stress is an everyday occurrence, too much stress can cause both physical and mental health difficulties. It then becomes critical to be able to identify your stress symptoms to take control of your stress and restore balance.
There are four major areas where we look for signs of stress: Physical, Cognitive, Emotional, and Behavior. Looking into each one of these areas we can find the manifestation of different stress symptoms.
    1:33 Physical Stress Symptoms
    3:36 Cognitive Stress Symptoms
    5:39 Emotional Stress Symptoms
    6:59 Behavioral Stress Symptoms
Within the physical realm, one of the major signs of stress is having a lack of energy or fatigue. We can notice this from the moment we wake-up or as the day progresses. This stress symptom can cause an intake in caffeine use. Unfortunately, caffeine use has been linked to increases in both the biological stress response and the individual perception of stress. Other physical stress symptoms include physical aches, chronic pains, and body tightness. Because stress signals the fight, flight or freeze response it is no wonder our body would tighten preparing for a perceived threat. This tightening can lead to an increase of headaches, which is another sign of stress. Stress can also cause indigestion, nausea, or stomach pain. Additionally, stress can cause chest pain or a rapid heart rate even while resting.
In the cognitive realm, signs of stress include increased worrying or anxious thoughts. Under chronic stress people can notice that they have anxious thoughts nearly all day and find themselves worrying about the future and the past. Another sign of stress can be difficulties with concentration and impaired memory. If the mind is stuck in a sped-up, anxious mode, it can be difficult to focus our attention on the here-and-now. This can cause difficulties with reading or remembering simple things such as: Where did i put my keys?
Emotionally, stress symptoms can manifest with an increase in irritability and agitation. This can be due to stress limiting our ability to cope and regulate our emotional experience. We can find ourselves over-reacting to things that typically would not be a big deal. Another sign of chronic stress is having depressed or low mood. This can lead to hopelessness over time if the stressor becomes chronic and the person doubts their ability to create change. Therapy is a great resource of individuals who find themselves stuck from a chronic stressor. Other emotional signs of stress include feeling overwhelmed or anxious. It is important to note that any major shift from your typical emotional experience may be a sign that you have too much stress.
Stress can also cause changes to our behaviors. A common stress symptom is having changes to our sleep which could be sleeping more or sleeping less. Individuals with chronic stress may feel so fatigues that they have trouble getting out of bed. Others may find themselves awake most of the night with insomnia because of their rapid-anxious thoughts. Another sign of stress is noticing changes in appetite. Stress can cause individuals to eat more as a way to cope. However, stress can also suppress appetite and cause stomach discomfort that leads people towards eating less. Having too much stress can also led people to withdraw from social situations and isolate. This symptom of stress can be harmful over time because research has shown isolation leads to even more stress. Another common sign of stress is an increase in nervous habits such as biting nails, leg bouncing, skin picking, or biting the lip.
Stress can manifest in many ways, but if you are noticing yourself having many of the symptoms discussed across the various areas you are likely stressed-out!
The benefit to becoming aware of your stress symptoms is you can then be empowered to make the necessary changes in your life to lower stress and restore balance.

Thank you for posting this. I have been under a tremendous amount of stress related to relationship issues. I knew that at some point it was going to take a toll on me physically, and now it has. I am feeling completely run down all of the time, out of it, upset stomach off and on. All I want to do is crawl into bed and just sleep. I have been run down due to stress, just not to this extreme. I live in Portland, Oregon and we just experienced alot of smoke due to the fires. Luckily in the city we were not affected, but with all the smoke and how bad it was, it was concerning which also stressed me out. As a matter of fact I started feeling run down and out of it during the smoke we had due to the fires. Air has been much better with the rain we have been getting thank goodness 🙏. However I am still feeling run down, out of it and exhausted all of the time. I know that a big part of it is my personal life as well. Will this ever go away? I feel like it won't.

I hope you feel better. I think we all go through that sometimes, if you don't mind me saying. I know I have. Oh, and I live in Oregon, and I definitely remember the fires, that was tough.

That's a good question I think it's when I start not being myself, or my stomach. This is really important to catch early I have learned. Because mental health is important, too. Thanks for making this video I enjoyed the skits🙄
