Hello everyone, I was in the RV repair industry for 44 years, recently sold my company and retired. This has to be one of the most accurate informative videos I’ve seen. Nice job and spot on with all the topics he covered. Really refreshing to see someone who actually knows what they’re talking about. Keep up the good work.
How ab out this friend? I find the more you pay the more you pay. The trailers are bigger, far heavier, take far more fuel to move, take far more money to fix, still comes apart like any trailer, the truck to tow it needs to cost an arm and leg, and in the long run your trailer just loses all it's value like another trailer. You are paying more for this trailer than a 10 acre home in some areas. What you think of that accuracy?
Thank you so much for putting out videos like these. Making the consumer smarter will only force the manufacturers to improve their processes. I've also watched several of your truck focused videos and they are equally educational.
Wow! Every time I watch one of your videos I learn more! I want to feel comfortable towing a 5th wheel and having the best quality. Thank you so much for educating all of us.
Thank you for your straight forward clear language making it much easier to actually understand the differences in the ratings as well as visually comparing and pointing them out how to recognize possible future problems. I learned so much and look forward to seeing more. I usually read manuals or other ‘how to’s and stay away from videos because often they have a very narrow focus, I accidentally touched my screen and your video came up and within the first couple minutes I was hooked as you compared different models that ‘almost’ all look the same by were vastly different in quality of product. Thank you again 🤓
For the newcomers you offer the absolute best information. If and when I can get a 5th wheel I will be reviewing all of your videos before pulling the trigger. Or, I might just come to Texas and take you out to dinner. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Just bought my first 5th wheel and I am watching this video again now. It helped me out so much when I was looking. Thanks for making this video, absolutely fantastic.
As a RV technician I feel like you should've covered something about roofs. They are the life of a camper/motor home and nothing about a camper matters if people don't take care of the roofs!
@@lynnettemcwhorter5619 Any experience with Tremco products? I did double lock steel roofing and we used Tremco Dymonic as a sealant around pipes, exhaust, flashing, etc. Outstanding stuff.
I love your no bullshit, unbranded, approach to your videos. Breath of fresh air. I just have a tiny 8ft 1998 coleman toas popup that I pull behind my 1999 4.8L GMC sierra. I've only been married 3 years and just bought a house and have loads of student debt, but I dream of the day I can apply the information you provide on your channel. Way to go BTBRV, and thanks!
Excellent video for someone with NO knowledge of RVs thinking of possibilities for future purchase. Very well done. Looking forward to more of your educational youtube lessons. Thx M. Foley
13:40 So true! I've seen a lot of 5th wheels in the shop with bad axles/bearings/springs/hangers. Those axles are so cheap to begin with, it's pretty outrageous that on a $50k+ RV they don't spend an extra $200-500 for a set of proper axles and spring hangers
Well done video with lots of good info. Something worth mentioning to look for in higher end units would be dual ducted AC units. The traditional RV AC's have the return air plenum visible on the ceiling and the newer dual ducted units have it insire the ceiling with return air ducts pulling air to the unit. Dual Ducted units are much quieter. There seems to be a lot trailers marketed as high end just because they use a solid surface counter or add USB or frosted glass on an interior door but still have a traditional AC.
If you're going to go camp on Pismo beach or other off-road type areas, you don't want a bigger "belly" closer to the ground. But thanks for pointing out the Z-frame, good coverage.
This video is very informative especially for someone like me who has never owed a travel trailer nor fifth wheel. I'm seriously considering a purchase in 2017, one last thing Thanks for not selling it and just sharing the data.
1. This was really informative. You talked a lot about suspension but I would like to hear about shock absorbers. Do they do any good, are they worth the effort?2. I feel it is important to make sure the vent in the high ceiling over the kitchen has a remote. No one is going to reach it from the ground.3. One thing no one ever seems to address is driving style. If you use Rest Stops or Truck Stops to take a break, you can not put your slides out. Is your RV fully functional with the slides in? Can you open the fridge? Cook? Get into bed?
Been around rvs since I was a baby and have owned them pretty much my entire adult life to date and can say with a lot of confidence that the travel trailer with the swayed out tire was more than likely the way they pulled it into the spot it sat and less underrated axles. It looked to me to be a flagstaff micro lite (which I own one currently). Mine does that only when I turn sharp, and from my experience most rvs do, doesn’t matter if they are high end or low end. For the price point they went after they are really quality travel trailers with a lot of higher end rv accessories and amenities and feel very solid, hell mine has full independent suspension and it’s only a 25’ camper. Last trip I took I watched a very large Luxe rv pull in a slip and the tires swayed out just like that and you don’t really get much more high end than that. Other than that very good video especially for someone who is on the fence on deciding between a cheaper camper over a higher end model because they truly don’t know what they are getting for the extra cost.
Thank you... this very informative video has steadfastly increased my resolve to build my own unit. I can convert a 30' gooseneck horse trailer using all, high-quality materials, for about 1/3 what it would cost for a "Junk-Made" pre-built. Thanks again!
I just watched your video. I have looked at many videos that relate to what I want. You are the only one I have seen that explains the pros and cons. I really appreciate that. Im still looking and hoped to find.
Funny how this popped up when we are looking for an rv. We have been watching this channel for about a year, along with Matt's RV reviews. We have been making decisions carefully because our next home is going to be an RV. Thank you!!
We picked up a Grand Design Solitude 375RES. we love it. Feels like a house, especially with the living room and bed room 3 steps above the kitchen. You get the feel that you are in a separate rooms.
Another way to tell is to ask about the warranty. The cheaper units plan for at most 10 weeks of use each year while a top end unit is happy to have to have you in there full time. You can tell just by opening the door and walking across the floor how much better the construction is.
This was very informative, especially for someone how knows nothing about 5th wheels and trailers. What to look for and the difference in the quality of them as well.
Very informative video. Thanks a bunch. We are about to buy our first 5th wheel and this video really stopped me from buying a piece of junk. You made a difference and thanks again.
I am making it a habit to watch your videos. Very informative and I think honest. I don't live any where close to your business but would consider flying down just to buy from you!
Good job! Tell makers we don't care about fluff mess eye appeal. We want structural stability. No leaks. Hey, y'all hear that - no leaking! So far, it seems Oliver, BigFoot, maybe Northwood makes the best quality. Oliver being the absolute best. I don't have one, and they don't make anything over 23' (?), but Oliver doesn't skimp on quality.
that last trailer at the end, the one with the different pitched wheels, that could have been caused by how the trailer was backed into the spot. I've seen many times when backing a trailer sharply that one of the wheels will pitch outward just because of the strain of being turned sharply and the weight of the trailer on top of it.
Exactly! He is spot on on many issues, but that's an area he could be wrong. He could also know that's the issue and he is only using that example to illustrate what's he is taking about. Otherwise great video.
You are exactly right, that is an effect of a sharp turn when backing in. Because the wheels are fighting the center of the turning radius being between the two wheels, this outward/inward camber effect occurs.
@14:30, that's just from having to swing the rear of the trailer around at the last second while parking. ALL tandem axle trailers do that. MY 32' fifth wheel, my 20' enclosed construction trailer, and my 18' flatbed dovetail car hauler ALL do that if you can't just back them straight in. You are right about axle ratings, but that's not what was causing what you were seeing in that particular shot.
Informative video. However, at the end concerning the axles and the one you showed of the camber being bad, that could be caused by sideways stress on the axle due to sharp turning and sliding the tire, which would straighten up when the trailer is pulled forward a few feet. I will agree, MANY use axles that barely cover the weight.
Also with turning a trailer while driving or reversing, it is common for the front and rear tires to lean out and in depending which way you are turning ( one leans in and one out per side). It is possible that this last trailer shown had been turned while parking kind of sharp and left that way. It wouldn’t surprise me if that was the case. This only happens when an axle has some weight on it but not always near limits. Just be aware it doesn’t necessarily mean it is overweighted if it does it slightly.
Love your videos. The wife and I just picked up our first 5th wheel, a 38ft Open Range 3x378rls, it was a big step up from our last 27ft bumper pull, but she fell in love with the amenities it offered, full size refrigerator, washer/dryer,and so on. We looked for over a year, just so many different models it was hard to choose.Think we got our best bang for the buck with the Open Range. Keep the good videos coming. 👍
can you do a video on 5th wheel toy haulers next? Also a look into the quality of some of the bigger manufactures would be cool. Keystone, forest river etc...
Informative. I just wish the interiors on the higher end models had a modern design like an Airstream. The Big Horn model looked very 80's in design and every thing was brown in color.
Great video! I've watched well over one hundred RV videos and this was definitely one of the better ones. I see that trucks are more your thing, but I'll be checking your library to see if you've covered RV roofing and hitch quality differences. If not, perhaps you might think about making one? Cheers.
Outstanding video. We are putting an offer in on a '17 Keystone Raptor and this brought up some great points for us to look at before we drive 5 hours to go look at it and sign paper work.
Nice job. Your example on the axel that you said was bending or twisting was incorrect. The axel was not causing one tire to stick out and the other to pull in. That was and is caused by sharply turning or really just any turning of the tow vehicle and the actual rim is bending. The harder the turn the more the deflection. This is the reason rims crack and lug nuts loosen.
Can you do a video like this on toy haulers? :) I'm getting ready to move from a bumper pull coachmen toy hauler to a fifth wheel toy hauler. Your videos are really informative! Thank you!
Great information. I owned a Coachman 5th wheel and the roof leaked no matter what I did to fix it. six months later had a bad storm and a tree landed on it. I was so sad to see it go ( NOT ) here I am in 2020 and am now looking for a new 5th wheel. Thank you for the information and I'm going to be looking ata Big horn like the one you just showed. Thanks
good information, and now as of this coming Monday I will be the proud owner of a 2011 Montana fifth wheel as my first RV for long-term living. I'm very excited about it.
VERY GOOD INFO ! WOW, Thank you for making this video. Much food for thought. I will be very careful when I am ready to go out and buy. I know exactly what to look for now.

What do I need to look for in a roof?
That's the truth, I'm a roofer have been for 25years, starts at the pipes, air conditioning and main thing is ladder leaking

I so appreciate watching someone who is knowledgeable about a subject. Kudos
Spot on brother. I was raised as a Military Child. Grew up in Travel Trailers for years, there was six of us. good memories. Great job on video.

That was so informative if I lived in whatever state you’re in I would probably come by my trailer from you thank you so much. ..
Informative. I just wish the interiors on the higher end models had a modern design like an Airstream. The Big Horn model looked very 80's in design and every thing was brown in color.

I agree.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. Great information I learned a lot
Great info, thanks for the video. I would love to hear your thoughts on the toy haulers.
That wheel camber is most likely due to being turning when parked. That flexes the axles on any trailer, more or less.
Great video, like that he is honest and informative about quality.
We recently bought a 2018 Durango gold and build quality wise it is the nicest out of all we have owned
Is that the Dodge SUV or some sort of trailer?
Thanks, an automatic leveling system and better axles/tires are a must have in my opinion.
Can you do a video like this on toy haulers? :) I'm getting ready to move from a bumper pull coachmen toy hauler to a fifth wheel toy hauler. Your videos are really informative! Thank you!

Jessica Gross How do you like your 5th wheel? Pros and Cons?
VERY GOOD INFO ! WOW, Thank you for making this video. Much food for thought. I will be very careful when I am ready to go out and buy. I know exactly what to look for now.
Also watch tank sizes. If you're boondocking then larger tanks are nice vs those that are regularly hooked up don't need the large tanks as much.
Deciding between a bus & 5th wheel...this info helps.
