      Oh yeah, let’s just ask those in the fishing industry to “clean up their act”. Go ahead and let us know how that works out. Maybe harsh punishment could help deter their contributions to the ocean’s trash. But it’s not just the fishing industry - everyone needs to get on board with cleaning it up. Pointing fingers, even if you do not personally contribute to the trash, does NOT solve the problem. It’s a humanity issue!

    When future generations are dying of plastic induced strokes and heart attacks because of the microplastics in our blood stream they will look back and realize that this project was the only meaningful work that was done during our generation. Microplastics induced strokes and heart attacks already happen today because enough plastic had had enough time to get small enough to get into our blood stream. You have plastic in your body right now, we all do. However the amount will begin to hit critical mass in the future and those people experiencing that crisis will look back to our grocery bags and hate us and they will look back at this project and say why didn't they fund it instead of blasting off billions of dollars of rocket fuel to get to a barren wasteland.

      I agree with you, since we should postpone space exploration beyond our own moon until we fix or drastically improve humanities own problems (climate change, environmental destruction, global tensions, extreme poverty, racism, etc) and become a type 1 civilization. We are in no position to colonize space if we can’t even tolerate others differences.

    When are governments going to step up? Every government on the planet is responsible for its own country and every government should be contributing 1% of its GDP to the ocean clean up and countries that are known to be higher polluters like India, china, Pakistan and South American countries should be paying more.
    It’s unacceptable what we are doing to our oceans and we need to take severe action and get Ocean clean up processes and machinery everywhere.

    Where does all of that garbage go for disposal? Is it recycled or thrown on a landfill to pollute the land? I saw where barges are being shipped to my hometown. We have more than enough people to pollute our one of only 2 landfills and and the recycling center closed down 15 years ago as it wasn't viably cost effective. My landlord, at the time, found a newborn kitten in a recycling box.

    This project has evolved in an interesting direction. It’s clear that the interceptors are useful; going out in the ocean with the big ships and the collection boom has turned out to be less than useful, if the intent is to accomplish lessening ocean plastic in an energy neutral way. There appears to be tremendous overhead with the boom system with little actual reward and likely very high cost.

    • @MikeAG333
      @MikeAG333 2 месяца назад

      ......"less than useful". Are you suggesting it is making things worse? That's a bizarre assessment. Have you got some evidence to back up your analysis?

    • @bryanlallen
      @bryanlallen 2 месяца назад

      @@MikeAG333 Shrug. Read what I said originally. If for every pound of plastic (mostly waste from commercial fishing operations, BTW) that is removed from the ocean by The Ocean Cleanup, hundreds of gallons of fuel and beaucoup $$$ are expended, then perhaps concentrating on the Interceptor technology and minimizing or eliminating the Boom expeditions is in order. Just because you CAN do something doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. Notice how The Ocean Cleanup has evolved over the years. The original idea that there were great rafts of plastic in the gyres has been found to be incorrect; the plastic is diffuse and dispersed. Where the Intercepters are stationed is a much more cost-effective location for removing plastic from the oceans.

    • @MikeAG333
      @MikeAG333 2 месяца назад

      @@bryanlallen No, your last statement is fundamentally and obviously wrong. The interceptors role is not removing plastic from oceans. It is to prevent any more getting into the oceans. Cleaning up what is already there is an entirely different question, because it doesn't go away magically if you somehow stop any more being added to it.

BUT, as you have understood that you need to stop the flow that go in ocean, and created interceptors, you must understand that stopping the flow that go in rivers is mandatory. This flow is due to HUMANS. so pressure them, by all the ways, to not throwing pollution in nature. Go in schools, throw a garbage basket and see the reaction. Throw many trucks of garbage in governement of guatemala in order they understand pollution need to be adressed by education and state power. What are doing the world leaders company in guatemala ?
