@bgddogdflgd3013 in guatamala in some of the smaller villages along the river, they don’t have garbage trucks like you and I that come by every week to pick up their trash. Instead the people try dispose of the trash their own way because they genuinely have no other choice , sadly their garbage ends up in this river.
Best thing anyone can do in continue to develop garbage removal infrastructure in these villages, and educate the public on the harm garbage and plastics have on our rivers and oceans

We really need to go beyond recycling and make things to last for multiple if not infinite use. Glass is obviously a great example of that. They didn't take even though I left it on the curb for a week.
So I'm back to separating by bagging but all in 1 wheelly trash bin. I helped a little.
    I'll let them sort it.

They go into great detail on their website. Anyways, it's two barriers, first with rough sorting to ease pressure and a second tighter one. At shore they are concrete casted deep into the soil to withstand and the flow flexibility lightens stress on the river part.
Looks simple, probably huuundreds of hours of simulation, engineering and construction 🎉
