I’m so excited for you guys! I’ve found that the hardest part of parenting (have a 17yr old) is knowing you have the answers for them but not being taken seriously and then watching them make mistakes you could of helped them avoid. Unfortunately making mistakes is a part of life I just have to make sure that I am a safe space for my kid so that no matter what happens they can always come to me without judgement.

🖐️ I took my daughters door away once. She was a teen, she got a F in her favorite class (down from an A semester before) because she put zero effort into the class. She had a dance upcoming and I told her that IF she brought home a satisfactory progress report from the teacher, I would allow her to go to the dance. She forgot the progress report therefore, she was told she could not go to the dance.
My daughter proceeded to slam her bedroom door over and over and over and in the midst of her throwing a massive fit, which included screaming and kicking wildly on the floor, I warned her that if she didn’t stop slamming the door I would remove the door. She didn’t listen, I removed the door.
One piece of advice, don’t make threats that you have no intention of following through on.
My daughter brought that grade up to a B, she never failed another class, she learned her lesson and is now an amazing mother.
We still laugh about this incident. Some times you have to. 😂

I think invading a kid's privacy is one of the most awful thing's you can do and makes them dislike you. A kid shouldn't be uncomfortable in their own home. There is no valid reason to not have a door (and I do think they should have a lock, just make it a rule they can't lock you out)

We taught our children that all of us live in the house, thus each of us has responsibilities to live there. If we wanted money for something when young, we asked our parents. I still strongly believe in raising children this way.

Definitely be a parent that your kids feel they can tell you things. I'm 26 and I still feel like I can't tell my parents anything and it has caused so much conflict and resentment almost to the point I don't want to tell them anything. Also, make sure you are supportive of any decisions your child makes that they want to do for a living or want to do as long as it's legal and safe. I don't have that and it really has caused a lot of hurt

I'll be curious in a few years how your views may change. We all go into parenting with such high goals and intentions. Then life hits ya and your exhausted and overwhelmed and you do and say things ya never thought you would! I literally laugh at some of the things I said I would “ never “ do and out of sheer desperation I broke down and gave in. But you guys are going to do great! Jesus as your center and unconditional love is all ya need!

Just from listening to this podcast I feel you both are on the same page when it comes to discipline. There will be times where you may each think differently about something, but I know you will discuss it and come to a mutual decision. Communication and consistency are key and you both do that very well! So excited for baby girls arrival earthside! Much love 🤍🤍💕🐶

My brother got his door taken away because he would lock his dorm and not open it and sneak people in his bedroom so I think the door punishment is mostly for situations like that were the door will prevent them from doing whatever the bad thing is that they are doing in there room. Not like take door away for getting bad grades or something else unrelated like that.

I'm normally a silent ish subscriber but this door thing got me - I had my door taken away at age 15 by my parents. This was because I wasn't allowed my own privacy. At this point they had already taken my phone, and grounded me for about 6 months due to lying to them about where I was, who I was with, I let people that I didn't know into our home, I was skipping school, I was hanging out with people that were getting me in trouble with the police. I was a very very angry teenager and anything my parents did, didn't help. So they took my door - this meant they could listen to the things I was saying, they could see me in half my bedroom, but also to prove it me that everything will be taken if I didn't fix the way I was acting

Children who are raised with strict rules may exhibit rebellious behavior and have low self-esteem. They have the potential to become bullies and may experience a lack of self-confidence, depression, anxiety, and even engage in self-harm. It is important for us to raise our children in the proper manner. We should consider the future when they are 18, 20, or older. Do we want them to continue caring for us, participate in family gatherings, and seek our guidance during difficult times?

I had my door taken as a kid, for about 6 months, I’m 20 years old now, and my mom is a narcissist. I can’t even remember what I did it was something very minute and she took away my door, then after I got my door later I got in trouble again and she took my room away for 3 weeks and gave me 3 outfits to wear. Definitely didn’t agree with these punishments I think other methods would have been more effective and they just made me resent her. She locked the room door from the outside so I couldn’t go in and also took away my books as a punishment

I’m 20 and my parents look my door and bed away. But I was also a really bad kid. Taking those things away in my opinion I would say humbled me bc I learned that everything shouldn’t just be handed to you essentially living in a house with parents that had money… but in the long run did it make me learn from the mistakes I did to have the door off absolutely not. I don’t even remember why they did it. (I did get spanked and my phone taken and other reinforcements were tried before which I definitely deserved a lot of the punishments I got. On another note… my mom look soccer and sports away from me and my sister. Which we both are very athletic and loved sports so I feel like when we had to that taken we wouldn’t be able to go see our friends and I’d lose my starting spot because I missed practice that week. We would have to earn our spots back BUT I feel like that pushed me away from my parents. I was always in trouble ALWAYS but my parents were always arguing and were not good together at all. So I was hurt and has resentment of things I’ve heard them say about us and other stuff… in the end I feel like none of the punishments helped. I just did it 10x worse the next time but that’s not for every kid and it doesn’t mean just let it go. But you will have to find what works for y’all!

I totally agree and think kids should not have electronics. The amount of parents I see as a waitress just set up iPads for all their kids at dinner it's ridiculous it's like just talk to your kids! have conversations like people wonder why the kids don't wanna talk to them and its bcuz, they let them opt out. I'd rather have my kid have a busier schedule with sports than time to just waste on electronics

Fyi lots of kids don't care for sports. I'm one of them anime, manga, art and video games where my hobbies. I just never gave an f about sports or competition my interest did not lie there, please don't force sports onto kids.

@@XMissGX yeah but if they srnt sporty thats fine! They can get into arts, reading, music, etc. i think kids who "like" video games are because there parents didnt care enough to have them be active

I was not allowed to make c’s. I made one, and was on restriction for the entire summer. I could only practice on my clarinet, and read encyclopedias. I had to write every day what I learned.

I had the door one taken from me, not for nude photos or doing things I shouldnt of been doing but as simple as slamming the door every time I ran to my room... was more a lesson of if your not going to respect it I'll remove it 😂😂 happened a few times
