  • Wing Chun vs Boxing: Testing Wing Chun Distance Judgement Skills on a PRO Boxer
    John McDermott is an English heavyweight boxer from England. He is a two-time challenger for the British Heavyweight title and is the current English Heavyweight title holder.
    On 18 April 2008, McDermott won the vacant English heavyweight title, knocking out Pele Reid in the second round. He had fought for the same title once before in 2004 losing on that occasion to Mark Krence.
    In September 2007, he had become the mandatory challenger for a second shot at the British title beating Scott Gammer on points over 10 rounds. He had fought for the title once before in December 2005 losing in the 1st round to Matt Skelton.
    McDermott lost his English heavyweight title to Tyson Fury in a controversial decision on 11 September. Referee Terry O'Connor, scored the fight 98-92 in favour of Fury. After the referee handed the decision to Fury, Sky Sports commentator Jim Watt asked; "Has he [O'Connor] got the names mixed up?" Jim Watt along with other commentators Glenn McCrory, Johnny Nelson all scored the fight to McDermott, as did David Haye. Fury defeated McDermott in a rematch on 25 June 2010. McDermott won a unanimous points decision against Matt Skelton on 16 March 2013 to regain the English Heavyweight title.
    Wing Chun is a great martial art, but here’s what happens when you ignore the universal principles of combat!
    As in any fight, you still need to abide by the universal basics of Distance Control, Footwork, and Timing. These attributes have nothing to do with actual Wing Chun techniques, but just fighting.
    ALSO READ: www.londonwingc... ► Wing Chun vs Boxing: "Wing Chun DOES not work." Many people assume that if you learn Wing Chun that you will be unable to fight at a long range or cope with basic boxing or kickboxing combinations. Granted that Wing Chun is an exceptional martial art at close quarter fighting, but it can be used effectively over a long range of fighting.
    The notion that “Wing Chun does not work” comes from a misunderstanding of the training methodology of Wing Chun. We did a video (see • Wing Chun vs Boxing | ... ) explaining how Wing Chun can be used effectively over a long distance, while introducing the basic concept of improving footwork mobility.
    Surprisingly there are some people outside of the Wing Chun community that have the opinion that Wing Chun does not work a fight. Of course defining a real fight is difficult, as the term can mean different things to different people. This is where the misconceptions about Wing Chun begin.
    As in any martial art it is necessary to develop the ability to manage and control distance to the person that is attacking you. This involves the attribute of developing good mobility and footwork.

    There's so much bullshit wing Chun on RUclips. It's nice to see a channel that's multidisciplinary and open minded. Very good explanations and just beautiful martial arts. Congratulations on your work on this channel, man.

      I agree. I’ve seen some wing chun “fighters” get knocked out relatively quickly. But I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. It’s about the practitioner and their discipline and commitment. You will have trust in your own abilities and the lack of the drive to prove yourself, there’s no need. If someone attacks you, half the time they will be swinging wildly.

    The light touch sparring is fine. To really make a test of your theory maybe you should put on some heavy gloves and a head guard and have a more robust sparring session. Like Mike Tyson said "everyone has a plan until they get punched in the 🤕 head" (emoji added). What I'd like to say is the wing Chun guy decent foot work and head movement.

    I woul like to share honestly my personal opinion, and my writing is not to offense you or wing chun. I am just do it for researching true in combat. Wing chun is not for sport game and this concept expressed in wing chun structure and biomechanics. You move as boxer, your bodyframe also as boxer, and you do palm slaps as boxer. Your Distance Judgement based on boxing footwork, there is no wing chun in this video. In this video your footwork, bodywork and palm blocks and parries dont have wing chun structure and all your movements out of wing chun principles. And it is not real sparring with boxer, I just see how boxer providing friendly and indulgent game for you in this reason you demonstrate very suppositive and conditional Distance Judgement. Unfortunatly wing chun cannot do defense against real agressive boxing, becuse wing chun works better only against wing chun when both have same structure of attacks and same fighting tactics, same body frame and same footwork. All winch chun blocks work better against punches same as in wing chun. Unfortunatly you did not solve the problem with wing chun defenselessness against moden boxing and moden boxing based combat sports. It is logical that you did this video only for hype. Please, understand me corectly I am not saying that wing chun is bad in general, it is not good in sport sparring and wing chun is good for street self-defense in general. The logical conclusion of your video is - MOVE AS BOXER IF YOU WANT TO SURVIVE FROM BOXER. I hope my comment help you create some good video with real wing chun vs real boxing. It is not easy job. The only way to do it to fight with boxer - friendly real full contact sparring with medium range boxer using protection gears. I wish you all the best.

    • @mightymeatmonsta
      @mightymeatmonsta 6 лет назад

      No, that is absolutely incorrect! If you know the whole system in wing chun, it can be very effective against the boxer! He does not know the traditional footwork, or how to maintain contact and follow in the boxer's center of mass, which is a BIG DEAL! That is why he has to bob and weave, which goes against the principle of ECONOMY OF MOTION. But he substitutes that with the TOUCH METHOD, as he explained in the video. This does work, but puts you at more of a risk of being hit. When you use angled footwork and a rotation square to the attack, that cuts down the chances of you getting tagged because you are now moving AWAY from the attack, and also facing it, allowing you to see it better (which works great against the dreaded hook!), as well as allowing you to safely close the distance and counter. Wrong again! Our techniques work against ALL systems because we use deflection and proper footwork to redirect the punch (again this is economy of motion), which causes the opponent to either push his hand past the center, causing an opening you can step into and exploit, or maintain contact, where you can follow in his center of mass, trap the arm and leg, and then counter, again, safely. No, boxers move in a linear fashion, which is why they get hit a LOT! If you know the proper footwork, along with the whole system, and the ten concepts, boxers should not be that much of a problem because they have the same flaws as all the others, and are stiff and rigid as well.

    • @mightymeatmonsta
      @mightymeatmonsta 6 лет назад

      Actually yes, that is why you train that way. But, you have to do the techniques enough times so, under stress, they remain the same and are automatic and instantaneous. That is why you train. So you can have a response ready. The situation is exactly the same in combat as it is in the school. You just have to learn to transfer those responses to high stress situations.

    • @mightymeatmonsta
      @mightymeatmonsta 6 лет назад

      Yes, you can if you do the techniques and drills 5000 times (approx.) so it is in muscle memory. Why do you do the drills then? They are done to put the techniques and responses , including the proper footwork and proper way to close the distance, using INITIAL CONTACT, in muscle memory so the response is INSTANTANEOUS AND THE SAME EVERY TIME! This means, you have the proper response all ready. If you learn to remain relaxed as well, it should not change from the practice! It only changes when you DON'T do that and then subject it to stress immediately, as in any and all boxing derivatives. Then, as you tire or under stress, the response will either not be readily available to you (due to the fact you have to think about what response to use, which causes a delay in your response, the incorrect one, or none at all.), or the technique will change and FAIL under pressure. No, he DOESN'T know the whole system and that is why he has to add stuff to it. For example, there is no need to bob and weave. It is a waste of energy and goes against the FIRST CONCEPT of ECONOMY OF MOTION. You DO know what economy of motion is, right? Have you even HEARD of the ten concepts? I can bet you haven't! So tell me then, if you haven't learned the proper footwork (the circle inside the triangle), proper way to close the distance, using initial contact or the ten concepts, how is it you know the whole system? You learned the MODIFIED system, which is incomplete! Tell me, do you go directly in, punches blazing?? If you do, that is called the blitzkrieg method and is INEFFECTIVE against boxers! You know why?? Because all a boxer would have to do is throw a hook, which will go beyond your peripheral vision, and you won't see it until it comes back into view, and by that time, IT WILL BE TOO LATE TO STOP IT! Sound familiar??? Now with the REAL wing chun system, the traditional, as practiced by Grandmaster William Cheung, among 4 others, he rotates his body TOWARDS THE ATTACK! That means, he faces the attack and THAT becomes his center line. He then uses the CENTRAL LINE (THE LINE 45 DEGREES OFF THE SHOULDER) TO ATTACK! This protects the center line from attack as well because the rotation not only allows you to close the distance safely, BUT PULLS YOU AWAY FROM THE ATTACK AS WELL! If he throws another jab or hook with the other hand, all you do is reverse the process, turning again INTO the attack, facing it directly. Now that hand becomes the center line and the other hand, the hand that stopped the hook becomes the central line, turns from a tan or bil sau into a punch or palm strike, and follows along the center towards the target. See the difference? Now your center line is ALWAYS protected! If it is jab, then you would make contact (initial contact, like i just said), and depending on various factors, like positioning and distance, you would either push the hand past his center, causing an opening you can step into and exploit, using an angled step to the OUTSIDE of the attacking arm,and a body rotation towards the attack again, closing the distance, and trapping the arm and leg (which will temporarily immobilize the opponent's movement), allowing you to SAFELY counter and finish the fight. If he is a boxer and retracts his hand, then you MAINTAIN CONTACT (as per WONG SHUN LEUNG! You know who HE is right?), following in his center of mass, again, using an angled step to the OUTSIDE of the attacking arm (Putting you out of range of his counter, unless he has eight foot arms), again trapping the arm and leg (immobilizing your opponent temporarily), and again, finishing the fight! Understand so far? As far as the footwork is concerned, only the MODIFIED footwork is rigid and stiff, like the system itself because it uses LINEAR (straight in) movement and not angled, and only uses 5 or 6 of the ten concepts and NOT ALL TEN, WHICH SHOULD ALL BE USED AT THE SAME TIME! This is where the flexibility in the system comes from, as well as the removal of ALL initial flaws found in every other system, especially boxing derivatives. For the system to work properly, YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW THE SYSTEM TO THE LETTER! That means, all techniques, footwork, and the drills must be followed EXACTLY as you practice! The only difference is, in a real fight, the angle of attack! All punches and kicks are exactly the same and thrown the same way basically! I'm surprised you don't know that! So if you know the proper footwork as well, you can step out of the way and redirect the shot, allowing you to enter in, due to the use of MUSCLE FORCE on his part and an ineffectual counter, which you caused by your deflection and footwork. Understand now??? So don't even say you know the whole system because you are NOT EVEN CLOSE! Let me ask you something and be honest. How is it, I KNOW THIS, BEING A STUDENT FOR ONLY A COUPLE OF YEARS AND YOU DON'T??? Want to know why? Because besides training, you HAVE TO DO TUTORIALS, READ BOOKS, WATCH VIDEOS OF MANY DIFFERENT TEACHERS TO GET THE FULL INFORMATION ON THIS FINE SYSTEM and most importantly, LEARN THE TEN CONCEPTS ! You see, wing chun is the only FULLY CONCEPTUAL MARTIAL ART ON THE PLANET! This means THE CONCEPTS DICTATE RESPONSE, NOT THE TECHNIQUES, AS IN OTHER SYSTEMS, SUCH AS BOXING, MUAY THAI, KICKBOXING, ETC. Using techniques makes the systems flawed, stiff and rigid and LIMITED in their response to an attack, as opposed to traditional wing chun, which uses the ten concepts as a GUIDELINE or OUTLINE to how the system is suppose to work! THIS IS WHAT GIVES THE SYSTEM IT'S INCREDIBLE FLEXIBILITY! Get it now? This is why I know so much about the system and you don't. I did this when I first started learning wing chun and have continued ever since, continually learning. Also, it ACCELERATES your training, and makes you understand the inner workings, the subtleties and nuances of the system that you just can't learn from one person, NO MATTER WHO HE IS!! It also makes you a much better TEACHER AS WELL, because now you can explain the system in terms even a rank beginner can understand. So what you are studying is not the real system. It also DOES NOT WORK AGAINST BOXERS, but the traditional does because it has EVERYTHING you need for the system to be used the most effective and efficient way.

      MightyMeatmonsta
      You don't seem to be able to comprehend the difference between technique and application, anything practiced staticly is nearly useless in live combat, there's a reason people who compete for a living in combat sports don't practices statically. It's useful when learning the basic's of the technique, but without live drilling on an non-cooperative opponent the chances you'll be able to effectively use the technique are not great.
      and if you are tying to claim that Wing-chun is the "most effective and efficient", you might need to check your premises, there is no such thing as "the most effective and efficient" system. It _might_ be the most effective system for you, and your personal level of ability/style/habits etc, but that doesn't say anything for anyone besides yourself.
      And since you claim to know all this and that beating a boxer with it would be easy, i am slightly surprised there aren't any videos on your channel of you using Wing-chun to effectively control and destroy even an amateur boxer, let alone a professional.
      Since the only way you could know if your theory about how well your Wing-chun can handle boxers, would be to repeatedly test it in live combat with skilled boxers, since you don't seem to be willing to do this why in the hell are you talking in the first place?

    • @mightymeatmonsta
      @mightymeatmonsta 6 лет назад

      No, it isn't if it instills the techniques and footwork into muscle memory. So what do YOU suggest to learn the techniques? Do it once or twice then learn to do it INCORRECTLY while under pressure? No, static practice is important in the beginning to teach CORRECT technique form and application, along with proper footwork and timing as well. Same goes for all drilling techniques we use. We start slowly to make sure the technique is correct in it's form and application, then, when we have it down in muscle memory, we increase the speed and force until it is done at full speed and full force. This is done THOUSANDS of times before we ramp up the speed and force, which ensures that it is done correctly every time under pressure. Of course, sparring helps and we do spar, against each other and other systems as well to tweak or make minor adjustments. You see, a punch is a punch and a kick is a kick. No matter what, they don't change in a fight or in practice. The only thing that DOES change is the angle of attack, which, with practice, can be adjusted with PROPER FOOTWORK. Yes, there is, it is wing chun, since it uses the straight line theory, economy of motion and angled footwork. That is what makes it the most efficient and effective. As they say, the shortest distance between two points is a straight line, and that is what we use. Because of my knowledge of the system, that's why. I have a very thorough knowledge, which seems to back what I say. And that comes for many different sifus, masters and grandmasters that have been doing it for DECADES, some, well over 50 years!

    A traditional Wing Chun man in a traditional Wing Chun stance would not fare well in my opinion because how do you monitor a Centerline that is not standing straight up and often shifts Bobs and weaves? I have a great deal of respect for Wing Chun but The Wing Chun I was exposed to in JKD fared pretty well in sparring because we were constantly moving in and out of boxing range without over-emphasizing trapping movements but to just go straight up Wing Chun against the boxer is not a good idea...

    • @mightymeatmonsta
      @mightymeatmonsta 6 лет назад

      Here is how. You use initial contact to control the opponent. By maintaining contact when he retracts his arm in and following his center of mass (which has to be facing you when he throws his straight jab, right?), and using an angled step and a body rotation square to the attack (facing the attack), you pull yourself away from the attack and simultaneously close the distance. This allows you to safely counter because now you are out of reach of his counter the hook. When you enter in, controlling the arm, you can now trap it against the body, along with the leg, by putting your foot next to his, and dropping the back knee two inches, which gives you FORWARD INTENT and effectively locks his knee and leg in place (because now your body is moving forward, while maintaining a straight up and down, solid structure), which stops or limits his body for rotating or moving. His head will be able to move side to side, but this is done so quickly, that he won't have time to think about doing that, because the strike is so direct, and done at such a short distance. JKD uses inefficient and ineffective techniques, and has very little actual wing chun. They can't trap, because they do not practice it enough or correctly. You can't trap if you can't maintain contact with the arm. It just won't work. But, if you practice enough, as did Master Wong Shun Leung (all these theories are HIS, by the way, not mine!THAT IS WHY HE WAS CALLED THE KING OF THE TALKING HANDS!!!), you can effectively use it on ANY system. You know why? Because a punch is a punch and a kick is a kick. No matter what system you are using, they are thrown THE SAME WAY with the exception of changes in angle, which you can compensate by using proper footwork. No, actually traditional wing chun IS the best because it uses angles and maintains contact with the arm, unlike modified, which simply does not. But again, it's a matter of PRACTICING IT until it becomes second nature.

    • @mightymeatmonsta
      @mightymeatmonsta 6 лет назад

      What counters when you are outside of the attacking arm out of reach? They don't use closing the distance like wing chun does. Most boxing systems use mid range more but close distance is wing chun's strong suit, unlike other systems.

      Ben Jones Ultimately in any Martial Art including Boxing an individual has to internalise technique and combine that with an understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses.
      If you have reach you still learn how to intergrate that strength into your fighting tactics. Same ig your short you must develop tactics that allow you to overcome a reach advantage. If your very strong how do you develop tactics to account for muscle fatigue. Etc etc etc. A martial arts style is only one part of what makes a complete fighter.

    • @mightymeatmonsta
      @mightymeatmonsta 6 лет назад

      That is true, Chris, but only to a certain extent. Some martial arts, like boxing, are loaded with flaws and are stiff and rigid. Wing chun uses a direct approach and is very efficient, thereby, cutting down on energy expended while fighting. But they also use CONCEPTS, while boxers use technique to dictate response, which is another reason why wing chun can take advantage of a boxer's flaws, IF HE KNOWS HOW! You see here, the Master is using, as he descrbes it, the TOUCH METHOD. This means, he puts out his arm to entice the person to throw a strike. But that is only PART of the equation here. You can do it that way, and bob and weave, which is inefficient and goes against the first concept of ECONOMY OF MOTION, or, you can make contact with the arm, and follow his center of mass in as he retracts the arm, using an angled step and a body rotation square to the attack to not only pull you away from the attack, but also helps to close the distance as well. As long as you maintain contact, you can trap the arm and leg, which immobilizes the body and leg (which helps when fighting someone with strong legs and knees, as a muay thai fighter), as well as puts you out of range of his counter, the hook. This is what we do in TRADITIONAL wing chun. He needs to do that in modified because he does not know the proper footwork to close the distance, so this is more of a safety feature to protect him and gives him the edge because the boxer now opens himself up to attack. It also allows him to close the distance as well, but not as safely as if you were standing to the outside of the attacking arm.

      You'll see parts of Wing Chun in boxing and Muay Thai. Wing Chun is very similar to Bare-knuckle boxing. I'd argue the reason why Wing Chun guys fail is they hardly spar or do their elbow strikes. Wing Chun guys are inFighters and need to be very close to their opposite which is more likely in a street fight, they tend to have very hard time with Outfighters.
      Look up defensive traffic =boxing.
      Infighting=boxing=also look up Alberto Duran.
      Elbow guard/blocks = Muay Thai and boxing, look up Tony Ferguson Wing Chun.
      Long guard= boxing and Muay Thai.
      Wrestlers tend to understand Wing Chun better because a lot of the trapping translates to wrestling, look up catch wrestling and Wing Chun.
      I also see BJJ guys using Wing Chun sticky hands as a defensive measure against ground and pound.

We put on gloves and the more experienced fighters are told to actually gut punch us or just down right punish us if we make a mistake. This is why I chose this gym rather than any other in my area. Someone who knows their stuff, practices daily for years and spars with different body types and skill levels will obviously have an immediate advantage over an average attacker, or even someone who practices another style.

    Yeah... see this is what I don't understand. I do MMA but my specific styles I train in is boxing, kickboxing and must thai but my thing is why do I punch so much more fluently and with much more form and accuracy with boxing gloves or just hand wraps on but when I punch with just straight barekuncle it doesn't look or feel the same to me. Could this just be all in my head? If not how do I correct this? So if I do get in a street fight and I do have to defend myself I won't be throwing sloppy uncordinated punches all over the place because sometimes I truly believe that gloves teaches bad punching habits.

    • @truthhurts1884
      @truthhurts1884 6 лет назад +2

      bladeboytb1 gloves and handwraps definitely teach a habit, I wouldn't say a bad habit because it depends what you're training for. If you want to be more proficient without gloves, start hitting the bag with bare hands, go at about 50% first to build up the hardness of your knuckles and the strength of your wrists tendons etc. Check out Huen Sao as an exercise to support this after your session is done or even between rounds. Learn to punch with a vertical fist also as this increases the stability of your joints, your elbow will be closer to your centre of gravity and your punches will carry more weight. (It won't feel like it at first, but I made the transition a while ago and now hit much harder with minimal effort) also learn to hit with the Palm heel while your hand is open, you eradicate the fear of breaking a hand and instantly hit harder.
      Hope this helped

      @mightymeatmonsta 6 лет назад

      Yes, it is. Your punches should be EXACTLY the same. This is the point I made about techniques changing over time and through fatigue. You just proved my point! They do teach sloppy techniques because you don't do the techniques enough (5000 times or more) to place it in muscle memory, so it changes. Try training WITHOUT the gloves on. Practice the punching technique SLOWLY and check to make sure you are doing it correctly every time. If you were to do that for a whole year, you probably wouldn't have a problem with the gloves off and it would improve your technique with the gloves on as well.

    • @mightymeatmonsta
      @mightymeatmonsta 6 лет назад

      RIGHT! The vertical punch is superior to the horizontal, since it keeps the arm inside the socket of the shoulder and the energy flows freely down the arm. That is why we can generate copious amounts of power in such a short distance, which will also help your inside game.

    It's easy to lose focus on what Sifu Mark is saying here- regardless of what your 'base' is, you have to understand how to judge distance. Where is your head and face in relation to what is coming at you? Are you in position to counter? Can you slip and get in closer? This is not WC versus boxing. Thank Yous to McDermott for helping us train.

    • @mightymeatmonsta
      @mightymeatmonsta 6 лет назад

      Right and that is what initial contact is for. It allows you to control the arm and enter in, but only if you know the proper footwork to move out of the way and a body rotation square to face the attack so you can see it coming. This allows you to close the distance safely and counter safely as well, since you will be out of reach of his counter.

    KO a the 4:18 mark, with a left hook, most likely. This kind of sparring has actually a very different dynamic than sparring with gloves. Having said all that, you were against a pro champion, and I can't say I would have done any better, being a boxer.
    I just got home from the gym, where I sparred with an excellent boxer. I was against the ropes a few times, with quick powerful shots to the body and head. All I could do, for a while, was to try to block as many shots as possible, until I eventually found an opening and got away. Very unpleasant experience, very hard to deal with. I am curious how Wing Chun would deal with something like that.
    I am not comparing boxing and Wing Chun, both are close to my heart. I am genuinely curious. I wish there were more Sifus like you.

    • @sergiobatista2272
      @sergiobatista2272 Год назад

      I tell you how wing Chun or any other martial art would deal with that... Just knee the guy on the crotch, belly or stomach... And if the rules are against kicking, just step backwards in a fast motion one or two meters away from your aggressive opponent. Or you may also jump on the ground and fight on the ground or get up again and striking while getting up. I don't understand why you average people find it so difficult. I can stop any hand strykes (and also multiple hand strikes) with my legs alone. I have done it many times.

      Most Sport Bjj gyms today don't even teach you takedowns until you're a blue belt. If you find a self-defense focused class, you will learn distance management, punch blocking by clinching and grappling, and the simplest and most effective takedowns. Watch some Rener Gracie videos to see self-defense Jiu-Jitsu. Also, this is not a diss on sport jiujitsu. I love the sport and it is very fun, but it does not prepare you for the street.

    • @mightymeatmonsta
      @mightymeatmonsta 6 лет назад +1

      Why would you want to do that? You only RUIN the wing chun and make it useless. You have to know the WHOLE SYSTEM including the proper footwork, proper way to close the distance using initial touch and the ten concepts for it to work properly against all systems.

    • @sergiobatista2272
      @sergiobatista2272 Год назад

      You can use wing Chun principles with taekwondo and you will be a good fighter, no grapler or wrestling would have a chance against you. But I also agree with the comment above, that says you need to understand and apply wing Chun properly. I'm a wing Chun practitioner as well, but I also practiced other martial arts before coming to wing Chun (like kickboxing, taekwondo, hapkido, jiu-jitsu, and some kung-fu styles) I am a freestyle martial artist, I can fight better than most martial artists I see on RUclips...and I have a big critic to say, wich is, most martial artists (or the practitioners) fight almost only with theyr hands and totally forget to use the legs... And most wing Chun practitioners make this mistake. After all, wing Chun isn't an art of only using hands, but also the legs.

      @mightymeatmonsta 6 лет назад +1

      No, they don't know how to properly close the distance. If you notice, they stay in mid range, and not in close combat range. In wing chun, our SOLE purpose is to, as quickly as possible, close the distance to close combat range, trap the arm and leg, and finish the fight. If you stay in mid range, you give your opponent many chances to strike, kick, or take you to the ground. Once you move in, you take those opportunities away from him. This even goes for grapplers as well. Once you are next to them, and you trap the arm and leg, there is nothing they can do to stop you from pummeling them to unconsciousness.

  • @amateurbuildboxer9405
    @amateurbuildboxer9405 6 лет назад

    I think Sifu Mark started getting warmed up and used to John's rhythm towards the end and started getting the better in exchanges. On a side note I remember when I was a little kid my sibling was having a class in the Southgate Wing Chun Kwoon (now closed down). I was in the waiting area waiting for my sibling's class to end, I was pretty much minding my own business and reading a book. Sifu Mark then comes up to me (I was only about 10 years old) and tells me to get out of the Kwoon because he thought I was watching the people train (I wasn't but even if I was was it such a big deal? - I really wasn't, I just was reading a book). I said I was not watching people train and could I just wait in the waiting area till my sibling's class finished because I could not go home alone as my home was quite far. He basically said its not my problem and leave the kwoon. Ever since then I always thought he was quite an arrogant and intimidating man. Very arrogant and unwelcoming to such a young student who wanted to get into Martial Arts.

    • @amateurbuildboxer9405
      @amateurbuildboxer9405 6 лет назад

      If he was having a bad day that does not mean you kick out a young naive child out of your gym for no other reason other than to push around your own weight for the sake of it (ego). I trained for a few years (quite a while ago, but maybe he has matured) in the new Wood Green academy and got the same vibe from him. Needlessly punching his instructors 40-50% semi full force in the face to demonstrate techniques. I understand that in order for Traditional Martial Arts to be somewhat effective there needs to be realistic semi-contact/full contact force applied to the martial artists in order to get a feel for real life combat. But shouldn't semi-contact/full contact strikes be applied in controlled sparring and not just needlessly pummelling your instructors in demonstrations and give the excuse of 'they need to get used to full force strikes for real fights'. What do the instructors gain from getting sparked in the face for onlooking students when you can easily pull the punch and the technique can still be demonstrated. I find a lot of these coach's needlessly pummelling their staff members for what seems like only ego. I repeat an arrogant man and quite the antithesis of what a true martial artist should be (extreme humility and possessing a wise father like attitude to students)

    • @mightymeatmonsta
      @mightymeatmonsta 6 лет назад

      Well, like I said, we ALL have bad days! Don't know. Maybe he is a masochist, or maybe he is using a psychological ploy to prove how bad he thinks he is to show his dominance over the class! Who knows what is going through the mind of these people. But be assured, THOSE are the people who usually can't fight! Who was that instructor? What system was he using? Right. Humility is one of the traits of being a master. But even in some systems, like American karate, some of them are not like that!

    • @amateurbuildboxer9405
      @amateurbuildboxer9405 6 лет назад

      I'm talking about Sifu Mark. Trust me the man can fight. If somebody was 20 years younger then him and has his level of skill and entered the UFC, they would dominate. It would only take closing the distance and the Wing Chunner would oblique kick, and go on to trap the UFC fighter. The 1000's of hours Chi Sao would make hand fighting a breeze. I'm not just a fan of the culture of showing a lack of respect to students and those who are in a more subordinate position to you. Everybody deserves respect no matter their rank.
