We walked down to the field and for the next 30 minutes we watched Ichiro workout on a soaked field, in pouring rain, 2 hours before a game that now was not evening going to be played. This was nothing left to prove, 3,000 hit, first ballot Hall of Famer, Ichiro, busting his ass in the rain for a team that was on their way to winning only 77 games He then signed an autograph for a little girl who had waited all this time with her parents as well standing near us. I've been Mariners fan my entire life. I legit started sobbing at the 23 minute mark. Those who haven't been with this team for decades don't understand. The Cubs and Red Sox have both been redeemed, and frankly, those teams have other things to celebrate besides winning or losing. Mariners fandom is the nihilist realization that if nothing matters or will ever work out, you can find beauty in the pain.
I attended the first (and second) game the Mariners ever played. I witnessed their first run scored (In the second game, the first we were shut out by Frank Tanana) off Nolan Ryan. I too, am wet in the eyes. There are the people who love Seattle, and then there's everybody else.
I read your comment then had to look back up at the video because it didn't feel like 47 minutes *at all.* I just got lost in this where time just completely faded away because the story, how well it's being told, and everything else fully enveloped me. And I enjoyed it immensely.
Sisler's daughter was also in attendance at the game, and Ichiro had a word with her as well while the game was ongoing. Play stopped for 3 or 4 minutes (it was, after all, an all-time record being broken). The full clip of the moment, which understandably doesn't fit into a format like this, shows Dave exercising a deeply underappreciated skill for commentators -- knowing when to shut the fuck up. He made an excited call of what happened (which we do see in this video) then for well over a minute he just let the scene play out on its own. It was poetry all itself.
It's the ultimate showing of respect. It kinda reminds me of what happened at the Brazilian Grand Prix last year, The head of Honda's F1 division visited Ayrton Senna's grave the week before the race. Senna was always associated with McLaren and Honda, he was even friends with Soichiro Honda, the company's founder. That weekend, teams running Honda engines finished 1st and 2nd, with a McLaren rounding out the podium. The Kicker? It was on what would have been Soichiro Honda's 113th birthday.
EmpLemon is pretty good at this stuff too. I watched his Dale Earnhardt documentary (I don't watch or have ever cared about NASCAR) and it was amazing.

When I realized this is part 5 of 6 one disappeared from mine. They can just end the series here with wistful reflection on a future that never was, right? Surely the last 10 seasons of the Mariners have no relevance to the human experience, and Jon Bois definitely won't use them to tell us what we are.
It's hard to overstate how amazing Ichiro was. There will never be a more pure hitter or defensive outfielder in my lifetime. He had zero (0) games with 4 strikeouts. He had more games with 4 hits than he had games with 3 strikeouts. After that throw so soon after joining the MLB, no one tested his arm ever again. That's why his outfield assists were so low for his career. I am so glad I had grown into loving the game by the time Ichiro joined it.
I watched some of Ricky Henderson last years. and to echo Alex & Jon thoughts it is Ichiro and Henderson the most exiting baseball players in the last decades of the previous century and the first ones of the current
This series has been genuinely amazing. I'm Australian, have absolutely no interest in MLB and barely knew the Mariners existed before this. But now, for better or worse, I am a life-long M's fan. Thank you, Mr Bois.

I'd love to see Jon and Alex get a shot!
@@chicagoakland Same. I hated how much I loved Ichiro. Every time it was late in August and the A's were (as always) somehow over- or under-performing and yet STILL in the playoff hunt, I used to LOATHE seeing Ichiro step up to the plate late in games. Then, when the inevitable hit came, I would just have to sigh and appreciate what I had witnessed and was a part of.
In Edgar's twilight season, Mariners broadcasters occasionally asked opposing fans what they thought of him. I'll never forget one fan -- mind you, he said this with a broad smile on his face and with a tone that made it clear it was a *serious* compliment -- saying "He's a real Yankee killer, hate him!"
I got to meet Ichiro on the field once before a game.. He was so humble, happy to hang around for a few minutes with some middle school kids and take pictures. I shook his hand and just involuntarily bowed my head too, and he smiled at me and gave a super sharp, deep bow. He was so, so on it during his warm ups.. all of us were walking around school imitating that warmup motion he does for weeks, lol. All time Seattle legend 💙
I get tears in my eyes every time I see Ichiro’s record-breaking hit (258). As a Vietnamese, watching baseball when I was young was uninteresting, because I had no role models (no baseball players were Viet), but seeing another Asian dominate a sport with not only talent but respect made me so happy, and finally gave me an idol that I could look up to and support. Still my favorite player of any sport after so many years. Baseball misses you, Ichiro!
As a big film nerd I'd never have thought I could be impressed by the cinematography of what essentially is, well, a calendar full of charts, yet here we are.
The simplicity of this cinematography is beautiful: When they zoom out of the "calendar" (I want to call it a statistic "tapestry"), it shows you the entire context (& the bottom-line of sports - wins/losses). When they zoom in to the stats, they show you the fine thread/moments that wove this tapestry. For this reason, I cannot get enough of Jon Bois' work with "Dorktown" & "Chart Party."
26:04 "The Seattle Mariners are not competitors they're protagonists" ---(chills down my spine) And from now on!!! I will take this sentence to my grave and use it everytime some asks me "why are you a Mariners fan? they haven't won anything" HMB....let me tell you something
I take the voodoo approach... .The M's are cursed, having been born of the shotgun marriage through lawsuit between the American League and the city, that has doomed us to astonishingly bad seasons followed with periods of teasing … potential greatness in the form of individual greatness.... yet flaws in other areas of the team...to drive us all insane.
@@skipbayless557 Haha, I actually have! Thanks for asking! Since the Age of Ichiro, I have coincidentally moved from Europe to Boston. So now I have a few Red Sox games under my belt. Even saw Ohtani make a 9th inning game-winning homer for the Angels at Fenway, which was awesome. Although the RS lost. I still don't fully appreciate the nuances of the game, but I enjoy drinking beers and watching important plays on the replay screen.
"They were among the best in MLB at everything, scoring more runs than everyone and allowing fewer runs than everyone." Goodthing that there were no Special Teams in Baseball
Does everyone here think that Ichiro Suzuki will be inducted to the Hall of Fame unanimously the moment he's eligible? ... The best quote from Ichiro is "The ball was hit right to me. Why did he run when I was going to throw him out?" Now that's a man with confidence in his ability. It also blows my mind at what could have been if A-Rod, Jr, Randy & Ichiro would have played at the same time, could they have been a dynasty in the making?
Thanks for the content guys. Having been born in Seattle in 68 and spending all but a half dozen in the PNW, I have never wavered in my love for all sports Seattle. As my battle with terminal cancer winds down, a piece like this, especially the fan philosophy is a real treat. Your team sorta feels like your kids as you get older and at the end of the day you just want them to have an opportunity to succeed and enjoy what they do. I think Seattle's organizations over these decades has done reasonably well at providing these conditions and I think old Seattle fans can take pride in the fact that they have proven tireless and unconditional in their love for these teams. Great series, thanks again.
@Harry Engel Absolutely. I meant more from the perspective of the agony and the ecstasy of being a Mariners fan. Felix, despite all his faults (such as never taking off-season conditioning all that seriously) is the sort of tragic hero/protagonist that Jon and Alex are going to get so much out of. Can't wait, even though I know how it ends (I was there last September to say goodbye).
TheRedpantherman not an m’s fan but seeing king felix in a braves uniform is really weird. makes me feel old. ik this isn’t the same comparison but chris sale was my favorite player on the white sox and seeing him on the red sox is just reminding me how much time actually passes.
I know, I thought maybe they'd introduce him at the end of this part like they did with Ichiro last episode but guess we'll have to wait till next week
@Harry Engel So very cool that you got to see it. What makes it so even more incredible in my mind is the utter joke of a lineup that the Mariners ran out that day. A getaway game against the Devil Rays and magic happens. Just incredible. Totally agree. Felix could have been more, it could have ended differently, but I can't help but be grateful to see him pitch for the M's.

Lifelong Ms fan here (since that first game in 1977). I was in the park when he broke Sisler's record. Watching Ichiro play baseball (both in person, and on the regular through local TV) was truly a privilege that I will always treasure. Love this series -- thanks to the guys who produced it.
3:22 “...but he was on his own road now.” In the unique hellscape that has been 2020, this series has meant so much to me. That line meant the most of all, because it encapsulates what I’m going through. I’m on my own road now too, we all are, navigating uncharted waters and dealing with unforeseen circumstances. Best of luck to all of us on our own roads.
“We’ve entered another realm here, one that’s far larger and doesn’t operate on the dead currency of winning and losing” another realm and dead currency might be the tie in here but who cares, I just loved the surrealism of Bois mentioning an astronaut and his wallet.
I wasn't much of a baseball fan before quarantine, but this coupled with a pre-existing love for Ichiro's underappreciated play style has done it for me.
Jon's f-bomb at 5:10 reminds me of how they used f-bombs on Breaking Bad, Mad Men and Bojack Horseman. They get one per season and it's always awesome.
Can we just take a moment here to point out how brilliant this line is: "Unless you let those limits go, you're an astronaut who brought your wallet." Damn.
Being an astronaut who brought your wallet means that you've started on a new adventure but you're still stuck in old ways of thinking. An astronaut doesn't need a wallet; what are they going to buy in space? The astronaut shouldn't be bound to the mundane details of normal, everyday life, like you and me.
@@jamesgentry13 Them not playing sports does not make their (legitimate) criticisms any less valid. Never mind that they regularly criticize themselves (Jon does this almost all the time).

The numbers certainly speak loudly, but there's more to it than that. He doesn't just check all the boxes; he checks them all *perfectly*. It's pure class, is what it is -- hard to pin down, but you know it when you see it.

When Ichiro arrived in the league in 2001, he quickly became my favorite player! I even played and batted like him in little league and pickup games. It helped that I had really good speed and a great arm as well. As a Yankee fan, this made for an interesting time when they played Seattle. I always wanted Ichiro to go 5-5 and for the Yanks to win. When Ichiro came to the Yankees in 2012, it was amazing! I was finally able to see him play much more often. There will never be another Ichiro, he was special and unique in so many ways. As a life long Mariners fan I've been watching and rewatching this series with tears in my eyes, not for the staggering lack of success, but for the truly bright and happy moments that have happened, even in the bleakest of years. The Mariners are not a team that wins. That's the Yankees. The Mariners are a team that has fun playing the game. They make their fans love the game not because they love winning the game, but because they love playing and watching the game. I went to my first Mariners game when I was 6 in April 2001, and I've loved the Mariners, but more importantly, I've loved the game, ever since. For most of their history the Mariners have embodied MLB's slogan "Let the Kids Play", long before so many other teams did, and long before the MLB tried to outgrow it's stuffy, crotchety BBWAA leanings. Thank you for this series. Thank you for the research and the time you've taken to truly capture the essence of a team that so many overlook, dismiss and dislike. And I look forward to the conclusion of this series.

I of course didn't know much about the Mariners or Ichiro watch and was impressed. (Midwest kid watching Milwaukee baseball)
I've heard that in the 1950s bartenders in Boston woiuld do the same when Ted Williams came to bat. Of course, back then, only a handful of games, most of them away, would be televised per season.

Today in 2022 the Mariners have finally made it back to the playoffs. Happy to say I happened to be watching around the 23:00 mark when the news came through
I grew up about an hour and half away from Seattle and the fever the city had with him still remains untouched. My birthday present for 5 or 6 years was going to a Mariners game so I could watch Ichiro! Great memories!
Nothing more mariners than having multiple generational talents at multiple positions in your organization and either wasting their career or watching them win rings on other teams.
To a lesser extent the expos are a little like them but instead of being saved they had to move and get a name change. They could've headed up their rotation with pedro and randy johnson and if they were smart designed their lineup around Geurrero, Alou and Floyd

Actually, though the Mariners who won 116 games were a titanic team and maybe the best ever, the record is shared with the 1906 Cubs, who only played 152 games to do it (116-36), so the edge goes to the team from the dawn of modern baseball. I don't think that takes anything away from the 2001 Mariners. Interesting that none of these superlative teams won the championship game or series. Neither did the 1906 Cubs, who were upset by the White Sox. Can you imagine how delerious Chicago's baseball fans must have been that year? The Cubs did win it all the next two years.

After breaking Sisler's record, Ichiro visited his grave that offseason
The Kicker? It was on what would have been Soichiro Honda's 113th birthday.
he actually pissed on his grave
@Harry Engel He had a pretty brutal May in 2011 (22 hits, .210 average). Had he matched his April production (39 hits), he would have reached 201.
I appreciated the way he paid his respects to the Sisler family.

Zero games with 4 strikeouts? Ever? EVER?!

That doesn’t seem possible.

I kinda feel the same about Vlad. No lie.

As an Angels fan you probably are seeing the future of trout. Lol.

And it's directly followed by a potentially even better line: "The seattle mariners are not competitors. They're protagonists."
I have no idea what that means
Being an astronaut who brought your wallet means that you've started on a new adventure but you're still stuck in old ways of thinking. That's the most Mariners thing I could think of. Being at the top of the world, but never reaching the stars
They gave up 3 in the 7th, 4 in the 8th, 5 in the 9th to let them tie 14-14, then lost it in extras. Sad thing is - I didn't have to look that up.
@@arock not to mention the indians were down to their last strike twice, the first time being down by 5
@Harry Engel I actually didn't know that. This whole game sounds Taylor made for Jon and I'm honestly surprised he's never talked about it
they do hold the all-time record, that would just make it outright. but that is still crazy
Fuck James lofton
I think the Astronaut Who Brought His Wallet to Space might be the most poetic moment in history......except of course for the Griffey Nutcracker reveal. Thanks, guys.
I was prepared for the Nutcracker prank to be Ichiro, seeing Griffey was a pleasant surprise
@@tallbianca I was like "is it Sexton?" cuz they talked about his alligator prank. And then came Griffey.
Beltre didn’t wear a cup? Holy crap, that’s ballsy!
I see what you did there 👌👌
Not the only ball popper in Seattle. He might mention it in the next episode.
I’d just like to point out how perfectly the Mike Blowers prediction is used: for the first time, this wonderful, crazy story has become genuinely sad. And this bit of complete stupidity just turns it around so brilliantly, gets us laughing and smiling again and brings us some happiness to end this episode. Goddammit Jon how do you do this to my emotions
Best Record in the Nba:Warriors 73-9 (Lost the finals)
Best nfl record:Pstriots 16-0 (lost in the Superbowl)
Best mlb record: Mariners 116 wins (lost alcs)
Actually, though the Mariners who won 116 games were a titanic team and maybe the best ever, the record is shared with the 1906 Cubs, who only played 152 games to do it (116-36), so the edge goes to the team from the dawn of modern baseball. I don't think that takes anything away from the 2001 Mariners. Interesting that none of these superlative teams won the championship game or series. Neither did the 1906 Cubs, who were upset by the White Sox. Can you imagine how delerious Chicago's baseball fans must have been that year? The Cubs did win it all the next two years.
