The whole doggy ‘fuck this I’ll do what I want’ attitude is sneaky as hell and for a dog with fear based aggression I have to be so on the ball with that stuff.

Yet another excellent and informative edition. As you quite rightly attempt to emphasise and endorse, it`s the owner that really needs the training, the dog just needs guidance.

It’s evident you love dogs. Heart warming to see that as you work with them. Watching this dog completely mellow out and relax as you worked with him, it’s really people training, not so much dog training. Grateful for what you do.

Ah, I finally see my own mistakes. I often use a retractable leash but have switch to a standard leash now that I take longer walks with my dog. Hes reactive to others so I put him in a sit if his hackles rise. Im switching to the slip lead i use at the shelter for my dog so ill have more control and can give better direction. Its those owners that need the most direction that demonstrate your teachings the best. Now working on in-house barking/guarding.

If not, then a good way to help it is the leave it and place commands.

@@tomdavisofficial hey Tom, I have a question. When I was 6, I got my yorkie, and didn’t train him, and my parents were to lazy to do it as well. Now I am starting to train him, but I have a problem, he doesn’t sit on the floor, only on a bed or couch, do you know why this is?

I really enjoyed all your tips on the proper way to walk the dog and the commands being universal. My daughter has a 165 pound bull mastiff and Great Dane mix. I was stunned to hear her say Leave It when she wanted her to stop what she was doing. Bailey is much better behaved, with a dog that big you have to be in control. I love your videos

Hi, I am trying to rehab an 18 mth old lab/pit male. He has been in shelters for at least the last 8 mos. I have worked with dogs for years. As well as other animals. BUT THIS BOY IS A SPECIAL CASE! He is aprox 90 lbs. (Recently fixed) and has the behavior of an 6-8 wk old puppy! He does not show much interest in any toys, he ONLY seems to know how to rough house when interacting with people. He has decided that REDIRECTION is how to get your attention. And when you go to take the shoe away for example, he then acts like a puppy, biting your hands, feet etc. Same with toys. Thow the ball he will go get it & bring it back- then 'attack' your hands/arms. He is NOT being aggressive. It is EXACTLY like a 9lb puppy would do EXCEPT FOR THE FACT THAT IT IS NOT AN OPTION TO TURN HIM ON HIS BACK AS YOU WOULD A PUP. He is huge. He also looks you straight in the face as he does this (or lunges at you) and I admit he has made me feel uncomfortable- even knowing that it isnt aggression. I do not know HOW TO TEACH BASIC RESPECT TO HIM. I am at a loss & I also know that my failure to get him lined out is going to lead to his being destroyed! I can let that happen! He is actually a very sweet & intelligent boy- he has just been extremely mishandled & is misunderstood!
My friend swears by Thomas and suggested that I try to reach out for any advice that you might have...
I THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP!

I live in Alberta. Watch for a guy by the name of Dean from The Great Canadian Dog Academy out of BC. He travels across Canada a couple times a year (post pandemic). As with Tom, Dean studied wolves in the wild and works on behavior modification, not dog training. That be your best bet! His seminars aren't cheap but they will be the best money you spend and the info you learn can be applied throughout your life with dogs.
