As always great stuff. When I started using this method I made the commitment to giving the walk a 30-60minute time slot in my day. And my dog got as far in the steps and away from the house as he earned. My friends would poke fun because some days it just looked like I was walking back and forth with my dog never going anywhere. Two months and now he can go around our neighborhood(1 mile) loop and is perfect. I comment on a lot of your videos. I can't stress enough how much they have helped me shape my dog into a well behaved canine citizen.

I have often told my clients to have some one video them when they are struggling with getting the difference between what i show them and what they are actually doing. It has really helped some, others dont find it necessary. Just a fun exercise to aid them to see the difference. Thanks for all your great videos and help.

I not only have watched numerous videos of other dog trainers and techniques, I am also a dog trainer. I did not learn the cues, signs, nor the 'if we let the dog do this here, he is going to do that there', rational, which is disappointing. I have been watching your videos for only a couple of months and have learned so much more than I could ever have imagined. I am blown away by the simplicity of it, yet when not explained/taught your way, the problems seem to be insurmountable . I love your channel and am here to stay! True story. I had the best walk in 4 years TODAY. We just walked. A few corrections, but not many. Booker doesn’t react to other dogs behind fences etc. and I’m grateful for that. He was a puller so he could smell stuff. Beautiful walk we had! No pinch collar, just a regular leash and collar. Grommet? Gorgeous!
I know this is a 2 year old video but Joel THANK YOU your method works. It takes longer than people think it will not to mention every dog is different. Some dogs take months, some dogs take 5 minutes, some dogs take 1 correction, some dogs need a correction every time. Every single dog is different. Every person is different. It takes time, dedication, patience, and effort. Keep trying. 🙂
This is how I've always walked my dog and she's been off leash for 8 years now, constant learning everyday is a training day every moment is a chance to reinforce previous lessons, your dog doesn't need to be a circus dog just keep on top of those obedience basics at all times.

Hi all, my dog was not one to allow a stranger or dog too close without barking and lunging like an out of control lunatic whilst on the leash! I was embarrassed to walk her and seriously worried about the risk if she got loose as she does bite. She is trained very well with many commands and the relationship between us is amazing. She is very well exercised and has a job too. So I thought she was guarding us while on a leash or perhaps she was not socialised or maybe even mistreated in her previous home? So when it was suggested to me to practise ''Loose leash walking" I found one of the many videos that Joel has uploaded on his methods and followed them. I had two issues though so I had to adapt a little. One, my front door has a spring to close it and two my dog will not allow me to use a gentle leader, prong collar, normal collar or any collar to correct her, she will just turn and bite me! (I believe this was caused by a so-called 'trainer' using a cheap shock collar on full power). So, I ask her to sit and wait, I open the door and then ask her to come, I then ask her to sit while I lock the door and before moving off ask her to heal. If she pulls straight off, we reposition to sit near the door and start again and again and again till she waits for me to move first. I'm using a pulling harness with a short-chain leash, yes a harness. I corrected her with a disapproving tone of hey! and kept repositioning her before moving off. Same if she reached the end of the leash. So how did things go? Well, I spent a whole day (about 10 hours) with us practising and I only found the turn into her to be the hardest thing to deal with as she walks ahead of me a little. (Luckily she knows the commands to turn left or right). Anyway, we saw a cat in a gateway, right next to us. She walked straight past and just looked. unbelievable! We saw about twenty dogs and walked head on to about half of them, she huffed and puffed only at one of them who was barking a lot at her. She did not react to a single person. On day two, about a half-hour into our walk I 'fake' removed the leash and perfection continued, about an hour in I removed the leash. I know my dog is very quick to learn new things but I didn't expect these results. It's truly amazing! So I wonder how or why walking nicely on a lead might stop reactivity etc. I can't say I understand but I know it works. Perfection comes with practice but we have done so well together already that it was worth typing this huge comment! Thank you so much, Joel and the team from Beckmans!
This video is a game changer, now I realize how much sense it makes. The reward is the walk, but getting out the front door is the key. Our dog used to dictate the walk, the pace, leash pull, everything. After one session with the Joel method he was 50% better, and kept a better loose leash. Lots of corrections were needed. Still a long ways to go.
I watch all of your videos and they're great! Your methods are easy and very effective and I've never seen anyone else use them. I'm thinking of working with aggresive dogs in the future so please show more of them!

That IS our problem! You say “I can do this all day”.... Then reality is we don’t make that commitment. But that is the only way to see actual results?! How many of us have started out with determination and patience only to find ourselves letting little things slip because we’re in a hurry or exhausted🙋🏼♀️ Guilty. Thanks for calling it out Joel.
This is a fair point, but the actual reality is some of us don't have all day, so we look for those "quick fixes" and try to get by with those. We might not have all day, but it is our responsibility to MAKE that time for our dogs. You have time for what you make time for.
I literally said “we can do this all day” yesterday about 3 houses down. 😂 Then she walked perfect. I think she’s starting to see that phrase as a mark … hey- I’ll take it! He’s not reactive at all but when he wants to do something he pulls hard: and even just walking normal he tries to pull and keep a tight tight leash. I have a 9mo old Rottweiler and as of lately he has decided to push some boundaries which is unacceptable because he’s 80 pounds. He’s friendly but pushy, and being the breed that he is, he needs to be on his BEST behavior because there’s already a stigma. :) Today is a new day and let the training begin (again!)!!
I had an 80 pound rott too :). I never had the chance to see these kinds of videos back then, I wish I had. Both our lives would have been a little better, I think. He was the sweetest dog I ever had. But as you say, they have to be perfect because of who they are and it can be a little exhausting. You have to be perfect too :). But so rewarding, because imo rotts are the best.
So I spent this morning watching several of your videos on pulling and leash reactivity and I was finally able to comfortably walk my dog a mile through some trails. While I had some reaction, he was self correcting by the time we were out the door. Finally have a method that my dog is responsive too. Please keep them up.
The dog I was walking this week is very strong. It pulled so hard it knocked me over, ran off and I ended up chasing it all around the hills of Malibu. I looked up how to stop this on RUclips after a horrible day. After watching this video, the dog is now 80% better. She is completely tolerable. I now need to work on the 10%. Thank you, Joel!
I would love to see this with a craaaaazy high-energy dog just to experience the process and to see how many times they repeat the same mistake before they realise it and settle down. Please do share if one of those types of dogs comes in and you can record it!

I started using your method about 1 month ago with my 5yr old GSP. After years of rewards based training that didn't really work, I finally can take a loose leash walk on a flat buckle collar w/o pulling. I only treat when appropriate behaviors are offered instead of the constant treating that was encouraged by all of my previous trainers. I'm so glad that I stumbled upon your videos. TY

Joel... you're burn a hole through my heart right now. I make my leash reactive dog sit to come in and out and I make sure he doesn't leave me through the door...... but then it's just stay by my side sort of time cause you need the exercise the walk provides. As always, you're giving me great direction to take my diy training sessions.
I love the fact that Joel doesn't need prong collars or even slip collars. This is part of the reason I refer his videos to my students. He gets results without the pain principle being relied on. Would be great to see it with the gentle leader and also the front correcting harness. If you can organize the other videos mentioned to be placed in the show notes - even better. He has the little dog video, puppy video, Great Dane video meeting the dog on the walk even, and my favorite is the Rottweiler video which I think shows the leash reactivity the best of all.
Thank you for the reminder of the vigilant subtleties necessary for truly effective leash training. I've had my 3+ yo rescue bull terrier mix for 8 months, and through daily training, he's not the maniac he was when I got him. Walks are so much more pleasant, but in the last week, I've started retraining him for leash walks. Even though we stop and sit at the door each time and stop and sit as I close the door behind us, he's doing a lot of it by rote. Watching this video today helps me see he's "not with me" MOST of the time. We live in the city and started going to dog parks a month ago, once I was confident we had recall. He's been brilliant at the recall, but he was picking up dominant behaviors--behaviors he's already prone to--from the poorly trained and unmonitored park doggies. It's amazing what people think is fine for their dogs to do to other dogs and strangers! So I realized we had to go back to making sure he's "with me." We're not getting much mileage on our walks these past few days, but my doggo and I are learning and relearning a lot now. And he's learned many things in 8 months that make training so much more precise, fun and interesting. Thanks for this supportive video--perfect for me to see today.
Thank you, Mr. Beckman! I just watched this today, after following (or at least trying to!) your techniques & advice for over 2 yrs now. THIS video was just what I needed to be reminded of now. Most useful to me were: 1. My dog's 'earning the next 3 feet of our walk' concept. Brilliant! 2. My dog's 'earning quotient' changes from day to day, minute by minute, situation by situation, even, and I must remember to always follow this Method progression EVERY time I'm with with my dog. 3. Just because I've first 'taught' this to my dog 1¼ yrs ago, doesn't mean I can now skip steps in this progression. To date, my 2yr high-drive unneutered male Rescue Rottie still gets emotional {whining & growling in frustration when I have him at heel & don't allow him to meet/play with them like I allow (with neutered individuals) at the dog park} when he sees other dogs. 4. My attitude needs to be 'I won't lower my standard, my friend. "I can do this all day!" 'You want to progress forward? Then stay on my page.' 5. I realized after watching this video that Mr. Beckman always looks at the dog when going in the opposite direction so he can perfectly time the correction & "Bink"-strength appropriately, commensurate with the dog's age & attitude. I totally forgot to 'check in' with my dog as I turn! Thank you, Sir!!
I just want to say WOW, thank you so much for your method. I didn't realize how important getting out of the house the right way was. I was doing all the other stuff, turnabouts, corrections, etc but it didn't help much because we already got out of the house on the wrong foot. I just spent about 15 minutes getting out of the house the right way and my very eager and energetic husky has never walked more nicely on the leash. Thanks again!

I have a super hyper and reactive rescued pitbull. We adopted her at 4 months old and she's been with us a month now. Can I just tell you that I tried your method in front of the house during her late night walk for only about ten minutes and my dog already started responding to my stops by sitting down next to me without any commands. I had to make sure I didn't accidentally put another dog on the leash. I mean I could not believe how quickly she responded to this method. The trick is in the leash "pop". When I did it for about the third time, my dog literally looked up at me with this shocked expression and admittedly I told her "yeah that's right, I'm the alpha now" ha ha ha. Amazing! I can't wait to keep working with her using this method. Thanks Joel!!
I feel you are the best trainer on the internet. I have watched a few different trainers to say the least and your instructions provide the best results and they make sense. I went to one trainer who sold me a prong collar from his bag of tricks to keep my dog from pulling. That was the last lesson and we never went back or put the collar on. Your method requires patience and repetitiveness, but isn't my dog worth it! Thank you!
You sooooo ROCK!!! I saw some little nuances that I can be/do better. Thanks heaps for helping us help our pets and the dogs we foster. I have a little guy that has a strong prey drive. He's doing pretty dang good until we come upon a rabbit. He's only 8.5 lbs and a couple of weeks ago when we were just starting employing this technique...he actually hit the end of the leash and flipped all on his own🤪 (he's on a harness - his neck and head width/circumference are pretty much the same so I was concerned he'd slip a collar). I love your videos. We rescued our 85 lb boy 3 weeks ago and we have now made it to the corner. It has been work, but I see a difference. I will not stop working with him.
So far this method is working! We haven't made it off the carport yet, but our big test is coming up. We have super aggressive/reactive dogs on 3 sides of our fence so we're going to try this in the back yard where there has been physical contact between my 2 cane corso mix pups and a neighbors dog at the fence. I am disabled so its a bit difficult for me, so I have to make slight modifications to this method. But so far so good. Thank you so, so much for your videos. Your methods are allowing me to train my own service dog. 🧡

Haha! Brumley was too good for a walk; trade him in for Waimea. Golden point @14:45, "They are going to show you the future in those moments. It's your job to train them in that moment, because then they are going to be better for for the next moment. And if they are not better at the next moment, you go back to the previous moment or step. You're not leaving that house until they're perfect." This is the detail behind Joel's mantra (now mine too), "I could do this all day." Then at the closing bell he throws out the bonus general all-purpose life advice "Do it better than you think you need to do it."
I have to say, this video was uploaded and made available on a night where I was at my wits end with my (almost) 9 month old pup. I've been doing the pop and correction for about a month and it felt like he wasn't connecting the dots. He was capable of making it down our driveway, but after maybe 100 feet from my house, he would just be out of control and forgot I was even there or lose his mind if he saw a dog, then he'd go into this tunnel vision, psychosis state because I'm correcting him and either be uncontrollable, or if a car drove by, he would go berserk and try to get the car. I never thought I was missing steps, just that I knew I was doing something wrong and this video really cleared up soooo much for me. After one walk and me following the proper steps, we didn't go very far on the walk, but I was seeing more check-ins and instead of trying to chase after 10 cars, we lowered the number down to 2-3, not perfect, but he had more impulse control than before. Joel, thank you thank you thank soo much for posting all your videos and explaining your analyzations of the dogs behavior. It's helped me a ton with my little guy, him being my first dog and part pit bull, I know he has to be on his A game 110% of the time and I feel like we're going to get through our rough patches because you've helped me out so much! Thank you again!

Your method absolutely works when done the way you do it. I have a 110 lb female and her 155 lb brother that I take out together. Without your method, this would be impossible, because they love everyone and most all dogs and want to say hi to everyone. I'm just starting this with mine. My youngest is super leash reactive. I literally just started the technique tonight. Did you work with them individually then together? I tried that tonight and cannot believe the difference. BUT we haven't encountered a dog yet.

I love you that a lot in a lot of your videos you say "I'll do this all day". That's exactly what they need! I adopted a bull terrier about 4 days ago, and not pretty on the leash yet. When we go out, we're out for about 2 hours, and that's not because we're taking a long walk. It's because we need consistency in obedience and knowing where we should be at all times, unless I say okay 😅
So completely right!! With my dog I did the door training would not leave till he waited respectfully. Only a few times of leaving the door and going back into the house and he got it. Then we Did lots of stops and increasingly complicated turns when on out walks. It became a fun game between us to see if I could catch him out or he could keep up with me. Did the same off leash in the woods- where there were lots of intersecting paths. One day he figured out he could take a shortcut across the woods to get back to me more quickly than retracing his path to the intersection and then running down my path to catch up to me. All without me giving any commands to him at all.
I have followed your method for my puppy for 3 months now. He improves a lot with his leash reactivity, not pulling that much but still acts crazy when he sees other dogs. I am definitely not doing your method enough on each walk. This is a great video and I am going to try it next time. Thanks :)
@@lizatse1298 So, pretty much an adult! Lol. Not a puppy..... Yeah, by his age you can go full steam ahead with your corrections and letting him know you're the boss. I have a 3 year old female lab, I let get away with bad behaviour wayy too long. Wish I knew better at 1 year....
@@lizatse1298 Thats part of the problem! We treat adult dogs as if their puppies.........and let bad behaviour slide because of it..... My lab is a sweet dog.....loves people.............but has gotten away with pulling on the leash and being leash aggressive for way too long. But following Joels methods has really helped.......just over the past couple of months. :) Don't be afraid to raise your voice and tell him to Knock It Off!!!
Joel, your videos on leash reactivity are phenomenal. Thank you for putting these out there and they have helped me substantially improve my walks. I really need your advice / help about why she is reactive in the elevator and main door to the apt bldg outside. She is “with me” as outlined by your beginning steps. It’s the people that are coming in and out of these place or turning the small corridor in the lobby. She barks and lunges at people coming in and out of the elevator or the double doors of the apt building exit. I’m getting worn out by the nasty looks and comments from residents in my “dog friendly” building in the city. I get why they are annoyed, but she’s a havapooo and only 10 lbs but they look at her like she’s Cujo. I’m at my wits end. Lastly, do you qualify “leaving you” if she is walking ahead of me not pulling. Or walking to the left or right of me but not at my side (but still not pulling). Hope you can clarify! Many thanks!
This is truly the best method been doing it for years. It's a cane Corso puppy Can you please do more separation anxiety videos. This is the thing I can't fix. He literally will freak out till he cant breathe. Tried giving his favorite marrow bone but he is so worried won't even chew on that and he normally does flips for them. Thank you 😊

We adopted a rescue Golden Retriever (English) at 16 months. She'd been kenneled most of her life (20 hours a day!) so had some issues with how to behave properly around people and especially dogs. Though she has been doing well and is a fast learner, and **better** at now pulling on the leash but goes apesh** when she sees other dogs. I walked her today with your method, starting at the front door. We started over 7 or 8 times, and then it just clicked for her. Kept up the method for 2.5 miles (a lot of turning around, stopping and sitting, or going backwards 20 yards and stopping. I think it's a new day for us. :-). Thank you.
First time here, so I hope the trainer doesn't mind my comment. It would help if you wait a little longer, until your dog calms down completely. The dog in the video is still in an excited state when he gets rewarded with moving forward. It takes a little longer for the initial few steps but when your dog realises, he's rewarded only when he's calm, you'll find the whole training so much easier and psychologically less work for you both. Also pay attention to when you say "good boy/girl". e.g. Don't praise for doing half the task or for being excited. Good luck.

Great lesson 👍 thanks! My dog is perfect with leash in the house, and even the word "walk" doesn't make him reactive. But as soon as the door is open and he is on a leash (so he knows he is coming), then the "fun" begins 😆😖 he is a smart boy, but I have never had time to do this. Gonna start tomorrow (it is too late tonight already), hopefully soon he'll be a nice dog to walk on leash 😊 thank you for some useful tips ♡🐶
I may not have been as consistent as you emphasize but I have seen significant improvement in my dogs ability to walk pleasantly through the neighborhood. I just see it as training for the both of us! I’m hoping I’m improving along with my dog but I’m still a work in progress, lol. I’m guessing the second dog was a silver lab.

imo ur the best dog trainer ive found been gettin a lot of info from you and ive explored lots of different youtube trainers, only other trainers I enjoy are the pack or wolf owners, you got any thoughts on more like wolf dog type trainers or training? I know its a way different ball game just something that really interested me

I do have a question though- I live in a place where there are tons of dogs, so a dog can suddenly pop up around the corner and my dog goes bonkers. What can I do if this happens? I turned around as you recommend, but it happened that when I did, there was another dog behind me. Happened all too quickly! Like when one arrives to a four-intersection way! What to do? When I started using this method I made the commitment to giving the walk a 30-60minute time slot in my day. And my dog got as far in the steps and away from the house as he earned.
My friends would poke fun because some days it just looked like I was walking back and forth with my dog never going anywhere.
Two months and now he can go around our neighborhood(1 mile) loop and is perfect.
I comment on a lot of your videos. I can't stress enough how much they have helped me shape my dog into a well behaved canine citizen.

I have often told my clients to have some one video them when they are struggling with getting the difference between what i show them and what they are actually doing. It has really helped some, others dont find it necessary.
Just a fun exercise to aid them to see the difference.

I not only have watched numerous videos of other dog trainers and techniques, I am also a dog trainer. I did not learn the cues, signs, nor the 'if we let the dog do this here, he is going to do that there', rational, which is disappointing. I have been watching your videos for only a couple of months and have learned so much more than I could ever have imagined. I am blown away by the simplicity of it, yet when not explained/taught your way, the problems seem to be insurmountable . I love your channel and am here to stay! True story. I had the best walk in 4 years TODAY. We just walked. A few corrections, but not many. Booker doesn’t react to other dogs behind fences etc. and I’m grateful for that. He was a puller so he could smell stuff. Beautiful walk we had! No pinch collar, just a regular leash and collar. Grommet? Gorgeous!
I know this is a 2 year old video but Joel THANK YOU your method works. It takes longer than people think it will not to mention every dog is different. Some dogs take months, some dogs take 5 minutes, some dogs take 1 correction, some dogs need a correction every time. Every single dog is different. Every person is different. It takes time, dedication, patience, and effort. Keep trying. 🙂
This is how I've always walked my dog and she's been off leash for 8 years now, constant learning everyday is a training day every moment is a chance to reinforce previous lessons, your dog doesn't need to be a circus dog just keep on top of those obedience basics at all times.

Hi all, my dog was not one to allow a stranger or dog too close without barking and lunging like an out of control lunatic whilst on the leash! I was embarrassed to walk her and seriously worried about the risk if she got loose as she does bite. She is trained very well with many commands and the relationship between us is amazing. She is very well exercised and has a job too. So I thought she was guarding us while on a leash or perhaps she was not socialised or maybe even mistreated in her previous home? So when it was suggested to me to practise ''Loose leash walking" I found one of the many videos that Joel has uploaded on his methods and followed them.
I had two issues though so I had to adapt a little. One, my front door has a spring to close it and two my dog will not allow me to use a gentle leader, prong collar, normal collar or any collar to correct her, she will just turn and bite me! (I believe this was caused by a so-called 'trainer' using a cheap shock collar on full power).
So, I ask her to sit and wait, I open the door and then ask her to come, I then ask her to sit while I lock the door and before moving off ask her to heal. If she pulls straight off, we reposition to sit near the door and start again and again and again till she waits for me to move first. I'm using a pulling harness with a short-chain leash, yes a harness. I corrected her with a disapproving tone of hey! and kept repositioning her before moving off. Same if she reached the end of the leash.
So how did things go? Well, I spent a whole day (about 10 hours) with us practising and I only found the turn into her to be the hardest thing to deal with as she walks ahead of me a little. (Luckily she knows the commands to turn left or right). Anyway, we saw a cat in a gateway, right next to us. She walked straight past and just looked. unbelievable! We saw about twenty dogs and walked head on to about half of them, she huffed and puffed only at one of them who was barking a lot at her. She did not react to a single person. On day two, about a half-hour into our walk I 'fake' removed the leash and perfection continued, about an hour in I removed the leash. I know my dog is very quick to learn new things but I didn't expect these results. It's truly amazing! So I wonder how or why walking nicely on a lead might stop reactivity etc. I can't say I understand but I know it works.

This video is a game changer, now I realize how much sense it makes. The reward is the walk, but getting out the front door is the key. Our dog used to dictate the walk, the pace, leash pull, everything. After one session with the Joel method he was 50% better, and kept a better loose leash. Lots of corrections were needed. Still a long ways to go.
I watch all of your videos and they're great! Your methods are easy and very effective and I've never seen anyone else use them. I'm thinking of working with aggresive dogs in the future so please show more of them!
I’ve been learning so many things from your videos. We have a now 5 month old Cane Corso and after watching this video we have tools to help us train him. My husband is now using your “earn the walk” method.
That IS our problem! You say “I can do this all day”.... Then reality is we don’t make that commitment. But that is the only way to see actual results?! How many of us have started out with determination and patience only to find ourselves letting little things slip because we’re in a hurry or exhausted🙋🏼♀️ Guilty. Thanks for calling it out Joel.
This is a fair point, but the actual reality is some of us don't have all day, so we look for those "quick fixes" and try to get by with those.
We might not have all day, but it is our responsibility to MAKE that time for our dogs.
You have time for what you make time for.

He’s not reactive at all but when he wants to do something he pulls hard: and even just walking normal he tries to pull and keep a tight tight leash. I have a 9mo old Rottweiler and as of lately he has decided to push some boundaries which is unacceptable because he’s 80 pounds. He’s friendly but pushy, and being the breed that he is, he needs to be on his BEST behavior because there’s already a stigma. :) Today is a new day and let the training begin (again!)!!
I had an 80 pound rott too :). I never had the chance to see these kinds of videos back then, I wish I had. Both our lives would have been a little better, I think. He was the sweetest dog I ever had. But as you say, they have to be perfect because of who they are and it can be a little exhausting. You have to be perfect too :). But so rewarding, because imo rotts are the best.
So I spent this morning watching several of your videos on pulling and leash reactivity and I was finally able to comfortably walk my dog a mile through some trails. While I had some reaction, he was self correcting by the time we were out the door. Finally have a method that my dog is responsive too. Please keep them up.
The dog I was walking this week is very strong. It pulled so hard it knocked me over, ran off and I ended up chasing it all around the hills of Malibu. I looked up how to stop this on RUclips after a horrible day. After watching this video, the dog is now 80% better. She is completely tolerable. I now need to work on the 10%. Thank you, Joel!

I would love to see this with a craaaaazy high-energy dog just to experience the process and to see how many times they repeat the same mistake before they realise it and settle down. Please do share if one of those types of dogs comes in and you can record it!

I started using your method about 1 month ago with my 5yr old GSP. After years of rewards based training that didn't really work, I finally can take a loose leash walk on a flat buckle collar w/o pulling. I only treat when appropriate behaviors are offered instead of the constant treating that was encouraged by all of my previous trainers. I'm so glad that I stumbled upon your videos. TY

Joel... you're burn a hole through my heart right now. I make my leash reactive dog sit to come in and out and I make sure he doesn't leave me through the door...... but then it's just stay by my side sort of time cause you need the exercise the walk provides.

I love the fact that Joel doesn't need prong collars or even slip collars. This is part of the reason I refer his videos to my students. He gets results without the pain principle being relied on. Would be great to see it with the gentle leader and also the front correcting harness. If you can organize the other videos mentioned to be placed in the show notes - even better. He has the little dog video, puppy video, Great Dane video meeting the dog on the walk even, and my favorite is the Rottweiler video which I think shows the leash reactivity the best of all.
Thank you for the reminder of the vigilant subtleties necessary for truly effective leash training. I've had my 3+ yo rescue bull terrier mix for 8 months, and through daily training, he's not the maniac he was when I got him.
Walks are so much more pleasant, but in the last week, I've started retraining him for leash walks. Even though we stop and sit at the door each time and stop and sit as I close the door behind us, he's doing a lot of it by rote. Watching this video today helps me see he's "not with me" MOST of the time.
We live in the city and started going to dog parks a month ago, once I was confident we had recall. He's been brilliant at the recall, but he was picking up dominant behaviors--behaviors he's already prone to--from the poorly trained and unmonitored park doggies. It's amazing what people think is fine for their dogs to do to other dogs and strangers! So I realized we had to go back to making sure he's "with me." We're not getting much mileage on our walks these past few days, but my doggo and I are learning and relearning a lot now. And he's learned many things in 8 months that make training so much more precise, fun and interesting.

Thank you, Mr. Beckman! I just watched this today, after following (or at least trying to!) your techniques & advice for over 2 yrs now. THIS video was just what I needed to be reminded of now. Most useful to me were:
1. My dog's 'earning the next 3 feet of our walk' concept. Brilliant!
2. My dog's 'earning quotient' changes from day to day, minute by minute, situation by situation, even, and I must remember to always follow this Method progression EVERY time I'm with with my dog.
3. Just because I've first 'taught' this to my dog 1¼ yrs ago, doesn't mean I can now skip steps in this progression. To date, my 2yr high-drive unneutered male Rescue Rottie still gets emotional {whining & growling in frustration when I have him at heel & don't allow him to meet/play with them like I allow (with neutered individuals) at the dog park} when he sees other dogs.
4. My attitude needs to be 'I won't lower my standard, my friend. "I can do this all day!" 'You want to progress forward? Then stay on my page.'
5. I realized after watching this video that Mr. Beckman always looks at the dog when going in the opposite direction so he can perfectly time the correction & "Bink"-strength appropriately, commensurate with the dog's age & attitude. I totally forgot to 'check in' with my dog as I turn!

I just want to say WOW, thank you so much for your method. I didn't realize how important getting out of the house the right way was. I was doing all the other stuff, turnabouts, corrections, etc but it didn't help much because we already got out of the house on the wrong foot. I just spent about 15 minutes getting out of the house the right way and my very eager and energetic husky has never walked more nicely on the leash. Thanks again!
My 4 month old german shepherd puppy is brilliant on his leash as I used this method from his first ever walk. I love your phrase "do it better than you think you need to ". It can be applied to so many things.

I have a super hyper and reactive rescued pitbull. We adopted her at 4 months old and she's been with us a month now. Can I just tell you that I tried your method in front of the house during her late night walk for only about ten minutes and my dog already started responding to my stops by sitting down next to me without any commands. I had to make sure I didn't accidentally put another dog on the leash. I mean I could not believe how quickly she responded to this method. The trick is in the leash "pop". When I did it for about the third time, my dog literally looked up at me with this shocked expression and admittedly I told her "yeah that's right, I'm the alpha now" ha ha ha. Amazing! I can't wait to keep working with her using this method. Thanks Joel!!
I feel you are the best trainer on the internet. I have watched a few different trainers to say the least and your instructions provide the best results and they make sense. I went to one trainer who sold me a prong collar from his bag of tricks to keep my dog from pulling. That was the last lesson and we never went back or put the collar on. Your method requires patience and repetitiveness, but isn't my dog worth it! Thank you!

I have a little guy that has a strong prey drive. He's doing pretty dang good until we come upon a rabbit. He's only 8.5 lbs and a couple of weeks ago when we were just starting employing this technique...he actually hit the end of the leash and flipped all on his own🤪 (he's on a harness - his neck and head width/circumference are pretty much the same so I was concerned he'd slip a collar). This technique is really, really helping.

I love your videos. We rescued our 85 lb boy 3 weeks ago and we have now made it to the corner. It has been work, but I see a difference. I will not stop working with him.
So far this method is working! We haven't made it off the carport yet, but our big test is coming up. We have super aggressive/reactive dogs on 3 sides of our fence so we're going to try this in the back yard where there has been physical contact between my 2 cane corso mix pups and a neighbors dog at the fence. I am disabled so its a bit difficult for me, so I have to make slight modifications to this method. But so far so good. Thank you so, so much for your videos. Your methods are allowing me to train my own service dog. 🧡

Golden point @14:45, "They are going to show you the future in those moments. It's your job to train them in that moment, because then they are going to be better for for the next moment. And if they are not better at the next moment, you go back to the previous moment or step. You're not leaving that house until they're perfect." This is the detail behind Joel's mantra (now mine too), "I could do this all day."
Then at the closing bell he throws out the bonus general all-purpose life advice "Do it better than you think you need to do it."
I have to say, this video was uploaded and made available on a night where I was at my wits end with my (almost) 9 month old pup. I've been doing the pop and correction for about a month and it felt like he wasn't connecting the dots. He was capable of making it down our driveway, but after maybe 100 feet from my house, he would just be out of control and forgot I was even there or lose his mind if he saw a dog, then he'd go into this tunnel vision, psychosis state because I'm correcting him and either be uncontrollable, or if a car drove by, he would go berserk and try to get the car. I never thought I was missing steps, just that I knew I was doing something wrong and this video really cleared up soooo much for me. After one walk and me following the proper steps, we didn't go very far on the walk, but I was seeing more check-ins and instead of trying to chase after 10 cars, we lowered the number down to 2-3, not perfect, but he had more impulse control than before.
Joel, thank you thank you thank soo much for posting all your videos and explaining your analyzations of the dogs behavior. It's helped me a ton with my little guy, him being my first dog and part pit bull, I know he has to be on his A game 110% of the time and I feel like we're going to get through our rough patches because you've helped me out so much!

Your method absolutely works when done the way you do it. I have a 110 lb female and her 155 lb brother that I take out together. Without your method, this would be impossible, because they love everyone and most all dogs and want to say hi to everyone. I'm just starting this with mine. My youngest is super leash reactive. I literally just started the technique tonight. Did you work with them individually then together? I tried that tonight and cannot believe the difference. BUT we haven't encountered a dog yet.

I love you that a lot in a lot of your videos you say "I'll do this all day". That's exactly what they need! I adopted a bull terrier about 4 days ago, and not pretty on the leash yet. When we go out, we're out for about 2 hours, and that's not because we're taking a long walk. It's because we need consistency in obedience and knowing where we should be at all times, unless I say okay 😅
So completely right!! With my dog I did the door training would not leave till he waited respectfully. Only a few times of leaving the door and going back into the house and he got it. Then we Did lots of stops and increasingly complicated turns when on out walks. It became a fun game between us to see if I could catch him out or he could keep up with me. Did the same off leash in the woods- where there were lots of intersecting paths. One day he figured out he could take a shortcut across the woods to get back to me more quickly than retracing his path to the intersection and then running down my path to catch up to me. All without me giving any commands to him at all.

I have followed your method for my puppy for 3 months now. He improves a lot with his leash reactivity, not pulling that much but still acts crazy when he sees other dogs. I am definitely not doing your method enough on each walk. This is a great video and I am going to try it next time. Thanks :)

@@lizatse1298 Thats part of the problem! We treat adult dogs as if their puppies.........and let bad behaviour slide because of it..... My lab is a sweet dog.....loves people.............but has gotten away with pulling on the leash and being leash aggressive for way too long.
But following Joels methods has really helped.......just over the past couple of months. :)

Joel, your videos on leash reactivity are phenomenal. Thank you for putting these out there and they have helped me substantially improve my walks. I really need your advice / help about why she is reactive in the elevator and main door to the apt bldg outside. She is “with me” as outlined by your beginning steps. It’s the people that are coming in and out of these place or turning the small corridor in the lobby. She barks and lunges at people coming in and out of the elevator or the double doors of the apt building exit. I’m getting worn out by the nasty looks and comments from residents in my “dog friendly” building in the city. I get why they are annoyed, but she’s a havapooo and only 10 lbs but they look at her like she’s Cujo. I’m at my wits end. Lastly, do you qualify “leaving you” if she is walking ahead of me not pulling. Or walking to the left or right of me but not at my side (but still not pulling). Hope you can clarify! Many thanks!

We adopted a rescue Golden Retriever (English) at 16 months. She'd been kenneled most of her life (20 hours a day!) so had some issues with how to behave properly around people and especially dogs. Though she has been doing well and is a fast learner, and **better** at now pulling on the leash but goes apesh** when she sees other dogs. I walked her today with your method, starting at the front door. We started over 7 or 8 times, and then it just clicked for her. Kept up the method for 2.5 miles (a lot of turning around, stopping and sitting, or going backwards 20 yards and stopping. I think it's a new day for us. :-). Thank you.

You may need a gentle leader when first training.
First time here, so I hope the trainer doesn't mind my comment. It would help if you wait a little longer, until your dog calms down completely. The dog in the video is still in an excited state when he gets rewarded with moving forward. It takes a little longer for the initial few steps but when your dog realises, he's rewarded only when he's calm, you'll find the whole training so much easier and psychologically less work for you both. Also pay attention to when you say "good boy/girl". e.g. Don't praise for doing half the task or for being excited. Good luck.

Great lesson 👍 thanks! My dog is perfect with leash in the house, and even the word "walk" doesn't make him reactive. But as soon as the door is open and he is on a leash (so he knows he is coming), then the "fun" begins 😆😖 he is a smart boy, but I have never had time to do this. Gonna start tomorrow (it is too late tonight already), hopefully soon he'll be a nice dog to walk on leash 😊 thank you for some useful tips ♡🐶

I may not have been as consistent as you emphasize but I have seen significant improvement in my dogs ability to walk pleasantly through the neighborhood. I just see it as training for the both of us! I’m hoping I’m improving along with my dog but I’m still a work in progress, lol. I’m guessing the second dog was a silver lab.
Hey I just did the "proactive stops" and it worked like a dream!!!!!! Now my 83-pound pitbull mix just walks right beside me I think so it's easier for him to keep track of me lol tytyty

imo ur the best dog trainer ive found been gettin a lot of info from you and ive explored lots of different youtube trainers, only other trainers I enjoy are the pack or wolf owners, you got any thoughts on more like wolf dog type trainers or training? I know its a way different ball game just something that really interested me

I do have a question though- I live in a place where there are tons of dogs, so a dog can suddenly pop up around the corner and my dog goes bonkers. What can I do if this happens? I turned around as you recommend, but it happened that when I did, there was another dog behind me. Happened all too quickly! Like when one arrives to a four-intersection way! What to do? Wish I lived closer to CA! Merci!!

If I understand your request, his videos are all dogs he has at his facility for training that he did not do any training beforehand.

My husky wouldn't leave the gate this morning. Doh. She's trained not to leave until I give her command. I was the one who forgot the house rule. Thanks for all your videos. My crazy husky seems to be doing a lot less lunging on walks. In totally amazed.
