  • In this Dog Nation Episode, I help Victor and Anngel Benoun, with their dog Fergus. Fergus is a golden retriever who is a burn survivor. Fergus has one issue, he is aggressive on the leash.
Whenever he sees a dog he lunges and barks. This is a very dangerous situation.
Can I help solve this case?

I just got puppies and training them has been great practice for me when I have children one day. Teaching me not to reward bad behavior, how my energy affects them, how to be patient, how physical punishments or even yelling doesn't help, and how having a structured schedule is key (same eating, peeing/pooping, play time schedule everyday etc). A lot of bad behavior is avoided by just giving them play time and running for 30min-1hour. Lots of discipline and consistency is necessary for having well-behaved dogs, same with children.

My collie was leash reactive but made a total turnaround.
All the "desensitizing" with treats and such have been worthless for us. And believe me. We tried.
Taking charge from the moment you leave your house, even just by not allowing him to run through the door, and requiring him to be attentive to me during the walk were the first steps. Going from a harness and long leash back to a simply 6ft leash and collar was the second step. Giving my dog something to do and taking charge to go left/right/back when he sees another dog was the 3rd step. Slowly doing those things closer to other dogs was the 4th step. Doing those things as we pass other dogs at a close distance was the 5th and last step.
One year of daily training in total, and not all with steady progression. But it can be done if you commit to it and don't get discouraged if results are not as instant as when Cesar does it. What Cesar calls "calm assertive energy" is so important but you can't fake it. What helped me was this idea: When we see another dog, get rid of the "Oh crap, another dog" mental response. Instead, remain calm and aware, and be excited that a training opportunity has presented itself. No feelings of dread and waiting and seeing how your dog will respond. But instead an upbeat training mode. If you need to cross the street, if you need to turn around, if you need to have your dog walking left and right and in a circle so he focuses on something else, all those things are good. But don't tense up. Don't focus on the other dog. Don't exhibit anxiety and worry. Do it in a way that is about you and your dog, not whatever other dog happens to be around. The whole point is that the other dog does not matter.
Now my dog is less leash reactive than many, many other dogs in my neighborhood. Just the other night we turned a corner and ran into another startled dog who instantly barked and lunged (which is how my dog used to respond in that exact situation). My dog did not respond, kept walking the same way I did, and shook off his tension and anxiety when we were past them. I was so freaking proud of him in that moment. Because I had no time to give him something to do, or to help him, but he just did what we have been doing as a standard response. He just kept walking with me past the thing that he found scary. And it was all him. It felt incredible.

Fergus seemed excited but not aggressive to me. He just wanted to have fun with the other dogs and his barking was to get rid of some of the excitement, but the owners misread it because of fear and a lack of understanding, then Fergus picked up on their anxiety which made him a bit nervous aggressive. The play bow gave away his real intentions! He was so happy to be around other dogs during the pack walk.

    • @clareshaughnessy2745

I would say to always remember it’s your behaviour that is making this. My dog had different problems but they were dangerous (running away from home to go and worry sheep and she had injured and killed some lambs). I realised that I had to think how I was being 24/7 and not just when I was out on a walk. So there was no use totally allowing her to run the house and expect her to behave because I’m trying to ‘Cesar’ her out on a walk. So she never, and still never walks first through a door or gate. When I walk downstairs she has to wait or follow slowly behind me. She does get on my bed, but only when I invite her. She never eats from my plate and I don’t allow her to stand near me or beg when I eat. That doesn’t mean she never gets a treat, but it’s put in her bowl when I finish. And when we walk, she doesn’t walk ahead of me on the leash.
Most importantly, I had to exude assertiveness.
It took about a year of that every day. And what happened was that she learned to look at me as her mentor, if you like, rather than, in her case, just a person who happened to be going on the same walk as she was. Or in your case, someone who needs protection, but who then gets annoyingly in the dog’s way when it’s trying to sort the other dog out and who therefore needs correcting. I mean, that’s pretty much what your dog is saying ‘look I can have this, but you are getting in my way, now stop it and stand back’. In no way is your dog seeing you as someone who tells him/her what he/she should be doing.
I wonder if you could get someone to video you as you walk so you can see how you interact with the dog?

Amazing. It’s all about the way you walk your dog, not by saying no all the time when you see other dogs! Thanks Cesar 🙏 🐕

I've watched almost every video out there for how to stop leash pulling and tbh, they have never worked. But I always come back to Cesar Millan, he's the real expert. Tysm!

This was beautiful. I appreciate these videos to help me when I bring home a shelter rescue. He is strong. I am small. He is sweet. Also very alert to other dogs. The shelter needs traing. I had many dogs fir experience. However, I have learned so much more from the videos. Thank you!!! All good calm energy..

We recently adopted a dog who'd been running loose for 3+ months. He's our first dog (we've only had cats for the last 30+ years) and between our inexperience and his background, things are still rough occasionally. One problem is that although he normally does well on a leash, if it's raining or the grass is wet he won't follow me out on the lawn--he just lays down on the patio. We've been attaching the leash to his harness and I look forward to seeing how he reacts to using a slip leash higher on his neck!! Thanks for this video and the others I've watched after finding the first one about a week ago!

Amazing how quick they work it out. I’m going to try this and test it.
P.S. They remind me of the irish red setter my second favourite large dog.
