I met a young man today training his young female shepherd. He was doing your “tune up” and I asked him if he’d seen your RUclips videos. He said yes! He loved you and learnt how to train his dog with your videos. He got this dog after his friend was giving her up because she was so unruly. His beautiful girl was doing so well, no pulling, she was engaged, just perfect!! I thought WOW!! The power of RUclips & a great trainer is changing the world. Well done Tom!
He just hit his head on camera and probably knew it was going to be put up on YT, that was the best reaction he could've had 🤷🏼♀️🤣 Actually I take that back..would've been better if everyone else had noticed, but he just completely did not acknowledge it at all and just kept a steady pace forward, like nothing had happened. 🤣
Soon as I seen buddy hit his head I came to the comments knowing someone was talking about it, and the first comment I saw was about him hitting his head lolllll!!!!
This is an excellent explanation. I'm an introvert, i don't naturally like people but it isn't an excuse for bad behavior. I like my people but not everyone is my kind of people. Same goes with dogs.
Same here.. finally figured that out after giving away 2 $1200 rottweilers lmao.. very expensive learning experience for me there.. I finally just went with hand commands only with a clicker.. no verbal communication or command except the clicker.. I use that as the attention grabber and to call the dog .. another words he is never too far to hear the clicker but if he is he is always watching me regardless of where he is for the fact all his commands are from hand signals therefore he has to watch me. But that's when the clicker comes in to play. For ex. if he is not watching me or is laying around I'll click once for his attention, then 2 clicks for "come" or a hand command.. hand commands are so much easy than verbal commands.. and your able to communicate with your dog while out in town or in the house while the baby is asleep without anyone knowing.. best thing ever.. I've worked extremely hard to only obey hand signals or the clicker. After 6 months he will not take any verbal commands from me, my wife, the kids or anyone else far as that goes.. extremely nice in my opinion.. 1 thing to always remember....your dog DOES NOT speak English or any other language nor does he automatically understand your words.. Good luck to everyone who may never read this. God bless
@@FullNelson007 that's really cool. If I want my dog to come I just point at my feet. Works very well. If I want him to heal, then I will just walk away and point at my feet again and he follows. Same with getting in the car or going into the house. It's pretty cool.
@@michaelangelos5117 yeah I'd have to say it's truly the coolest thing about having a dog. If you don't have a clicker I'd say give it a try.. when your useing hand commands try to use 1 finger pointing down at your feet as you said for "here or come" 2 (I use pointer and thumb) for my signal to heel.. just different ways you use your hand so your dog is not seeing the same commands for each task.. would kinda be like saying "come" for all 3 main things.. come, sit & down.. dogs are very intelligent and can see the difference in your hand each time trust me..
Hello from Malaysia, I tried your method on my dog today and it worked! It is also the first time I fully enjoyed walking with my dog. Thanks for sharing!!!
Thank you for this video!!! My husband and I have been battling with our 5 month old Shiba Inu for the past month. He’s a super stubborn little guy who was choking himself out every time we walked him. Who knew body language was so important? Our walks were so much better within one day just doing everything you said in this video. Thank you!!! Now we can all enjoy our walks.
Hi Thomas, hope everything is good... i would love to see a video tutorial, where you explain how to make put on and use the slip collar. Thanks a lot for all you work, i have learnt so much from you!!!
Great explanation on not using prong. I use the prong with my GS because she wanted to keep constant leash pressure, even while being otherwise well behaved. That can cause nerve damage in the dog, but I never realized how bad she was until I injured my hand and that slight pull hurt. Now there is ZERO leash tension on a heel. My other dog does not need this level of inervention.
I had to Upgrade to prong Collar to get my dogs attention, he’s a Rottweiler puppy and very very big at 10 months old. Fortunately the collar got his attention and he doesn’t resist it at all I’m almost to the point of changing over to another collar. The point is I can’t have a dog dragging me because he’s huge and I’m not and I want him to be obedient and my protector not a silly heart dog that’s all over the place and running me over. I have just lost my female after 12 years and it broke my heart he will never be what she was but hopefully he’ll be close.
Same here, I have a 4 mos old BM. She is always excited when we go outside and keep on pulling the leash. I am afraid that her throat might get damage that is why I am using the prong now. No more pulling on the leash because now I can communicate with her clearly.
I'm going to try this with my dog. His pulling on his leash is his only bad behavior. Thank you for the detailed instructions. I'm new to your channel and I'm very impressed. Well done
Wow! Was having issues making progress with our pup on leash pulling. After I got the pop down correctly, my dog has been much better on the leash. Definitely being engaged with the dog helped her listen better
OMG gobsmacked!!! wish I had watched this video months ago, still very grateful to have watched it now. In moving forward my 20 month old Red Nose Pitbull has just behaved in exactly the same way as Zeus in this video. Walking without the constant leash pulling and without verbal commands just praise .Thank you for uploading .
I'm guessing just tie a bowline at the end and slide the end thru then put another bowline on the end for the clasp. This keeps the loop from cinching down on itself.
I have a red heeler that is high anxiety. I get her plenty of exercise but the process is so full of anxiety it becomes stressful for me too. This video is incredible, thank you so much for sharing such valuable tips for dogs and people who need it! I have watched many of your videos and recommend them to everyone. Your approach is so straightforward and I appreciate that as well.
Thanks for this full tutorial with questions too! Watched it several times, especially for the nuances and finer points (like no bent elbow - who knew). Can't wait to practice. Working on my leash communication to increase neutral/calm vs reactive/alerting dog body language. It's amazing to watch you work!
My dog does this screaming thing like this dog did in the beginning when we pull up to the dog park. Like now I know I have to work with him in these places for him to get better
I’m starting to work with a Rottweiler who is very very strong and obese. I’d like to be able to take him for walks, but I understand that it’s going to take some training beforehand to get him to not pull me away. He’s very friendly, so friendly in fact that if he sees another dog he’ll pull to say hi to it. I’m really excited to see how far his training can go and how his leash and communication skills will improve. One step at a time.
This is very helpful my dog has been pulling and has injured my arm I need to gain control so relaxed arm and shoulder are an area I need to work on thank you
Good video. I was really interested in the question that got cut. It was about what to do if the dog reacts to the squirrel. How would that be handled? Is there a video addressing that scenario?
I appreciate this so much I wish you’d make a follow up even more detailed. Lily and I were loving tug and it started to “turn ugly” enough that I wasn’t comfortable and I have avoided playing tug since. Tug seems to be her favorite thing to do and guidance to make it enjoyable for us both is really needed. How do you decided when it’s a good time to give your Bull the toy? Does he take it from you at times? There is a power dynamic here that I am not really knowing how to handle with my Lily. Thanks.

19:12 Great answer to why you did not use the prong. I myself have not needed to use a prong collar in years to teach a dog not to pull on the leash. I teach not to pull on a leash pretty much the same way you do but I do something just a bit different. I will actually reverse direction when the dog tugs too much one way. This has worked wonders with my dog Ruby. Plus something I would have done with this dog before the real teaching started is exercise or play first to get out some of that excess energy. I know when I take my Ruby to events with me and if I do not exercise her first before we go she can be such a turd. Great video upstate.

New subscriber!! Loving the work you do!! My German Shepherd mix heard his dog whining and came over and jump up smelling my phone, and was like mom is he ok? Lol
I have an 11 month old mini Labrador who doesn't respond well to the reward/punishment training. We used that style of training with our first labrador and it worked really well so it's been an adjustment for us to have to switch gears. I tried using the gentle leader with her during our walks and she did not care about the pressure. I recently bought the slip knot leash so this video has been really helpful to watch! She heals on my right so does this mean the slipknot should look like a 9 before it goes over her neck?
I definitely subscribed to your channel. This stop leash pulling video is amazing and to see how you made the correct, nice, with no pressure, and calmly. My dog is hyperactive. He gets his energy out thru doggie daycare. My issue is how he gets over excited when we get our keys, coat, or his leash. He spins, jumps, etc. When I got to put his collar or leash on his is out of control. He will stop and give me a down or sit when he sees me not moving. How can I stop this? Do you have a video to help?
Try in-home stuff, like you going first thru doors and down/up stairs. Make a command like "wait" or "back" and say it as you block the dog with your legs before you go. After a couple weeks of this, try it on leash inside, then wean into the backyard and outdoors. It seems like a small thing but I got my Dane mix to heel or walk beside/behind me for a long time, when just a few weeks previously she'd pull my arm off.
Can you help me understand the tools when we see a dog off leash, do I ask my dog to sit? Is that what you're saying.. would you mind explaining the steps for that please. Where I live we (my dog and I) come across a lot (too many) humans off leash! I need help in how and what I should do with my dog when we come upon that. 🙏 thank you for your channel. Much love 🇦🇺
This finally did the trick. So much wasted time with "dog behavioral trainers" and various leash gadgets. Never had dealt with such a stubborn dog before (shepherd/pit mix) and had no idea what would get through to him.
Congratulations! I love how you work! Some questions from colleagues I ask you! What do you think of the gentle leader as a training collar? Why, especially in this video, do you make the owner stay very close to his dog? Since the dog is very stressed! sorry for the bad english but, being italian i don't write well. Thanks hello Accatino t. S. Dog
I rewatched that guy hitting his head like 10 times lol! 😂

Verbal commands need to be consistent between multiple owners, handlers. Dogs are not bilingual. If its "heel " it is not "walk" with someone else.

Such a smart dog!
What kind of leash and collar do you use?? Great job explaining and teaching!
So, do I need to come to Denver for my labradoodle to stop dragging me through the neighborhood??
Try in-home stuff, like you going first thru doors and down/up stairs. Make a command like "wait" or "back" and say it as you block the dog with your legs before you go. After a couple weeks of this, try it on leash inside, then wean into the backyard and outdoors. It seems like a small thing but I got my Dane mix to heel or walk beside/behind me for a long time, when just a few weeks previously she'd pull my arm off.
Derp 🥴
You could just have your dog drag you to Denver 😅
Good video can u recommend leash you use for this type of training?
HONEYbeebusy whatsalltheBUZZ leather!
This is literally my exact problem. My dog is GREAT, nearly perfect, in the home environment, but identical to Zeus in public
I would love to see that collar you made !!!!!
*the only thing funnier than a dullard hitting his head is a dullard pretending he didn't just hit his head*
funnier are those 2 pretending not seen what happened
I really love this approach to dog training and my dogs do too, you should try👉 zootdogtraining.blogspot.com . .
tom. ugh i lobe your channel. thank you so much for what you do.
This finally did the trick. So much wasted time with "dog behavioral trainers" and various leash gadgets. Never had dealt with such a stubborn dog before (shepherd/pit mix) and had no idea what would get through to him.
RIP to the guy who hit his head at 3:29 😂
🤣
Will a Martingale work the same as a slip collar? When would you go,with a prong/pinch collar?
“No offense of course” 😂
What type of leash is this?! I really like it
Congratulations! S. Dog
Thank you so much! Blessings I learned so much today sir.
Namaste
