This is probably one of the best videos yet. Not only does it help explain some of the potential reasons this dog (and others) can become reactive, but also gives us the tools to notice when a dog is building, and the little pause of the video and showing the owner gave a glimpse into when the perfect moment to correct the behavior. And with diligence, we can see the transformation of the dog even within the span of a few minutes/days. Absolutely fantastic work.

I literally have the male version of this dog! He even looks exactly like her! He’s 15 now, and boy oh boy did I have a big lesson on pushy, bossy, mouthy dogs who redirect on the handler! We did years of training to keep him busy. He’s done obedience, agility, article search, SAR, and patrolled our property for predators like coyotes. Turned out to be a great dog, but definitely not for an inexperienced handler or one who wasn’t willing to put in the work. He’s a solid dog now and we used these exact methods. He’s still a little bit of a cracker dog, in terms of handling his feet or trimming his nails, but at 15 you can’t really fault him as I think his feet are arthritic. I love these types of dogs. This one turned out to be so much work but in the end, one of the best things in our life. He Saved our home from burning down (woke us up in middle of the night to a fire in our garage from a charging battery that exploded), kept my husky safe from predators on walks and kept her from running off. He’s still my partner even though he’s retired. I love him to pieces but oh my goodness those first two years were a struggle for me. I learned so much from a dog like this.

Dog owners need to accept that some levels of stress are healthy. I genuinely don't understand why some people would prefer to keep a dog who's engaging in dangerous behavior rather than just get to the root of the issue solely for the sake of their so called "ethics". I would argue it's actually unethical to allow a dog to live a restricted life, upset themselves to the point of reacting and put other dogs/people in harms way.

One of the things I notice is that so many people are timid! This isn't a bad thing, I think it's how people themselves have been conditioned to be (especially women.) If only people knew to stand in your power, speak with power and don't let the dog push you around! Say no, make the dog wait, and don't ever give a command or correction without follow through. Calm and assertive is the way to be. Assertiveness is such a valuable tool for all walks of life, and only improves the lives of the dogs in your care! Awesome video as always. I've spent decades watching my dogs body language and working from that. It never ceases to amaze me how many dog owners walk along - maybe on the phone or drinking a coffee - with their dogs off lead who are heading straight to my dogs (on leads) giving them evils from 100 yards away! The owners are completely oblivious but I can see that I need to detour or there will be trouble by the time they reach us. It happens time after time. One dog we see often approaches us really slowly, bearing its teeth, hunched really low, laser-eye staring evils at my dog, growling and stalking straight at us and the owner is always just in la-la land! We just have to avoid her completely now but it makes me want to shout "why is MY dog the one on the lead?!?"

You show the real stuff, you have perfect timing, you balance the line between correcting and rewarding perfectly, we see tough cases and easier ones, and what absolutely SHOCKS me is whenever a R+ Dog is on freaking meds because those trainers rather put a dog under the influence than give them corrections and a choice for their behavior.
    Good Work, keep it up!

I agree with almost everything….except one.
My dog is currently on Prozac as well, but only for short term. He has separation anxiety and barks and whines nonstop any time I leave or am out of his sight. Doesn’t matter if I crate him or not.
What the Prozac does, when used correctly, is it allows the dog to create a new habit to replace the bad habit. Once he realizes that he is safe and I will return and that anxiety goes away or lessens to the point where he isn’t acting out, then we will titrate him off of the Prozac over 2-3 weeks.
I’m on all kinds of meds, and I’m in no way “under the influence”. In fact, they are what keep me clear headed and sane. I’m not saying people should drug their reactive dogs into submission. I just think certain meds can be beneficial for dogs who are experiencing intense anxiety that keeps them caught in a behavior loop.

I definitely did not expect it to happen the following day. All of a sudden he is very reactive , protective and alert. The behavior Literally came out of no where. Can’t wait to take him out to a park and try these tips. Might even do some training in the back of a parking lot.
Awesome Video and Thank you !

I have to agree this is one of the best videos yet. I realized my corrections are not timed properly ( Irish Wolfhound, 175#). For whatever reason this is the video that gave me the "a-ha moment". Thamks so much for all you do.

I love it !! Your a blessing . I have delt with some of those exact problems but honestly I think lucky he picked up on I could not handle the aggression and lowered it on his own . Ceasar has pulled me to the ground and come back to me " like what happen mom ?"

This is why it's so important to cut the dog off while walking them! It makes the dog aware that they should be looking at you for cues, not the other way around. It was game changer for me and my two sister dogs. If they ever get unruly or amp each other up I cut them right off and then make them wait, as long as it takes.

Your vids are always great, but this one was AWESOME! The vid capture to show the owner where the dog needed correction and got none was absolutely PERFECT!! The need for a correction happens so fast sometimes as the handler you wonder where you went wrong...solved that problem, didn't you ❤️

We have two dogs. The first is five years old and the second is 3 years old. They got along for 2 1/2 years. One day it seems like something snapped in the younger dog. She would attack the other inside if there was food around. We stopped putting food out while both are free. Then she just started where she would attack the other whenever she saw her inside. Outside they are like the best of friends. My dog did they same thing of biting me when I separated her from our other dog. We now just have to make sure one is in a room while the other is free in the house.
