YES girl I've been saying that for years! The Ariel slander is ridiculous. She wanted to be human BEFORE she met Eric, not after. That was always her dream and Eric was just a plus.
This one is definitely one of my favorites Disney movies along with Hercules, Mulan and Aladdin. I think the four of them have the best songs and characters. Oh and Eric is the best Disney prince for sure ✨

It's the same for a lot of the other princesses - people slander them, trying to make it seem like their stories are somehow sexist and the princesses are dumb, when if you just pay attention you see:
- Eric was the catalyst, not the cause of Ariel's desire to live on land. She always wanted that and she went for it. Getting a prince was an enjoyable side benefit.
- People call Cinderella a gold digger, when all she wanted was one night to forget about her abusive household, she never expected anything more.
- The third princess that gets a lof of slander is Belle. They say she has Stockholm syndrome, but she was ready to escape and only went back and decided to give the Beast a chance after he almost died to save her. He saved her, she saved him. After that, they both gave each other a chance and got to know each other. As soon as Belle wanted to leave again, the Beast stepped out of her way.
I could go on and on...
Disney princesses are all great and strong people. The only thing I see that can send the wrong message is the whole "fall in love at first sight and it all works out perfectly" thing, but that's another issue.

It also makes one wonder if she could write to him or have communicated that way. We don't see her doing that (which would've saved her a lot of time lol) but yet she clearly signs the contract. Disney plot holes. Gotta love them!! 😂🤣

I absolutely agree with your defense of Ariel!! She was always fascinated with the human world, Prince Eric was more or less extra motivation. While I understand Triton in wanting to protect her from the unknown aspects of the human world, he absolutely didn’t have to destroy all the things she holds near and dear to her heart. Yes, Ariel did act a bit irrationally but what 16 year old wouldn’t in her situation! She is definitely the Disney Princess I most identify with and the Little Mermaid is one of my absolute favorite Disney movies, tied with Aladdin!!

The “Ariel Slander” reminds me of the “Cinderella Slander” I see, where some claim Cinderella wanted to go to the ball, just to marry the Prince.
In the film, she wants to go because the Royal Invitation says “every eligible maiden is to attend.” Cinderella wants to go, because by royal decree, she was invited! It’s her step family who had their sights on the Prince…she just wanted to have a nice night outside the nightmarish hellscape that was being their servant.
Proof that people are stupid and can't pay attention to movies for one second... The slander's stupid..
I think this is the first time I hear most of these songs in english, and now I really appreciate the spanish dub. All the voices and songs are very accurate (especially the voice actors of Ursula and Sebastian, they're great!).

My main argument against Ariel as a character is that SHE DOESN'T LEARN ANYTHING. She wants something, there are some obstacles, she gets what she wants, the end.

The character arc in this movie happens to Triton not Ariel. Her actions were reckless but she was young and naive, and her father lashing out directly caused her to run away and essentially estranged her from him. He had to grow to understand her by the end of the movie.

Then his interactions with Cinderella and their conversations and I’m just like AND HE REALLY IS SWEET AND TRULY CHARMING. Then he shows how he doesn’t like the royal life and how he wants to be amongst his people and wants to marry for LOVE and I’m just like OMGGGGGG wtfffff.. my heart. Then that moment with Cinderella before they kissed on how they’re trying to figure out if their love is really FOR REAL or just their imagination.. and I’m like AHHHH YES THIS COUPLE!!! I’m rooting for you too!! We love interracial couples! 😭😭

Actually when I was 8 years old, I watch hocus pocus, and when Max that have 16 said to her sister of 8 years old, that He can't play in halloween anymore. I react like, OMG he is 16, he is really old.

Now, am I talking about The Little Mermaid or Aladdin? Plot point by plot point, they are the same movie. I love them both. Why isn’t Aladdin called out for doing the exact same thing?

Apart from the ship itself, there’s no CGI. Each frame, in which the lightning lights up the scene, is an overexposed airbrush painting that is carefully animated to move consistently with the regular animation. Go back and freeze-frame the shots of the lightning casting light onto something and imagine someone having to create those details by spraying paint on an animation cel, and then having to recreate it each time something in the scene moves!

Speaking of wanting to be a mermaid, I actually have my own mermaids tail. It's called a monofin and it's an awesome source of fun and exercise. Just be sure you read the instructions and practice with it for awhile 🧜🏻

I actually had an idea for a fanfic that focuses on King Triton while Ariel is gone. After three days of searching, there is still no sign of Ariel, with Triton's subjects completely exhausted, and nowhere left to look. Frustrated, Triton goes to search for Ariel himself, and his search eventually leads him to the surface, as Ariel would often go there against his wishes. While there, Triton sees a happy human family playing on the beach, and seeing their love for one another triggers a memory of Triton's own family from when his wife was still alive. There may even be a moment where a member of the human family helps a fish that had washed up on the beach back into the water, much to Triton's shock.
In this moment, Triton sees in this human family, his OWN family, and finally realizes that humans are not unfeeling barbarians, but actual PEOPLE. Realizing at last how terrible he'd been, Triton is utterly ashamed of his previous actions, and gives up his search for Ariel, believing that he doesn't deserve to get her back, and that she'd be better off without him. But then, Sebastian arrives to tell him about Ursula, spurning him back to action.

I prefer 2D animation as well. Ariel was my FAVORITE growing up (she's probably number three or four on the list now, but that's still really impressive considering there are like 30 princesses in the franchise now XD).

Calling out Ariel is like calling out Romeo and Juliet for their stupid decision making. OF COURSE they were stupid, they're teenagers.
