This is an Australian movie, based on a place called Mount Warning, it’s about 2hrs from where I live. The shape of the mountain range looks like a sleeping giant and there’s always been stories about fairies living in that rainforest. The “komodo dragon” is a Goanna and all the animals in this movie are Australian animals found in forests.
Does a version exist somewhere with an Australian voice cast? It always bothered me that the whole thing is set in AU but none of the characters who are natively from there have Australian accents. 😆
@@meganhuffmanwrites sadly there isn’t. We haven’t had Australian made kids films for a long time. So when I was a kid, I loved this movie, but the scenes with Hexus, especially at the ending with his skeletal appearance used to scare me a lot, lol, now I love it because it's Tim Curry giving it his all as a great villain

Yeah he was really scary but I remembered him so vividly, I was never really scared but I remember seeing oil coming out of our car once and telling my mom that I thought Hexus was in our car and to be careful while driving. XD
Apparently Disney tried to make Robin Williams not work on Ferngully so it wouldn't conflict with Aladdin where he voiced genie. He was good terms with Ferngully creators and stayed to fulfill his promise and felt it was right thing to do. Good for him
seems like disney wanted to be the only popular ones making hit 2d fantasy movies and now they forgot how to make a 2d movie after they destroyed their 2d studio and had to go somewhere else to draw the disenchanted 2d scenes. how hilarious
They tried to shut down Ferngully's production more than once. The movie didn't do as well as it should have. Then Disney went and plastered Robin Williams name all over Aladdin even when he asked them not to.
I’m so glad you asked how many animals are in the rainforest! Over 3 million species have been found to inhabit rainforests around the world, and those are just the ones we’ve discovered. It shows you just how important the rainforest biome is and why it needs to be protected
Not only is he lying but he also doesn't know about Hexxus and his vendetta. So I half fault him for the lies. Also fun fact: Toxic Love was recorded twice supposedly because Tim Curry's performance was too sensual.
Oh my god. I saw this movie when I was like 9 and Hexxus, that song and Tim Curry's vocals made me so CONFUSED. He was so scary looking and was a gross pollution creature and evil villain.... but the song sequence made me BLUSH and I didn't understand why. Now I'm all grown up and I'm the type who goes for the villains over the good guys 9 times outta 10...😳 I need to find this other version.....👁👄👁
Remember when Maggie said that everyone had the magic of creation within them? The longer Zach is with Crysta, the more attuned he becomes to the connection to nature that humans have lost. That's why Zach "absorbs" Crysta's energy - the power of creation spilled into him as he was tending to her. When Maggie dies, she becomes a part of everyone, and a piece falls to Zach, and he's truly able to feel the connection.
This comment needs more likes and to be hearted tbh. Everyone always forgets that Magi in fact says that the magic is inside EVERYONE, not all fairies, everyone. Zak just became more in tune throughout the movie.
Fun Fact: Batty's Rap was literally him talking about him being tortured as a lab animal with a whole deleated section about Robin Williams adlibbing about it that ranged from him screaming for medication and saying the line "my testicles are bleeding"!
@@roguechevelle Agreed! If you liked those, and haven't seen: -Titan A.E. -Princess Mononoke -Laputa: Castle in the Sky -Metropolis (2001 version) -Steamboy I would highly recommend them as well.
FernGully is such a classic and a movie i grew up with. The ending always makes me very emotional and teary! Definitely give the second one a watch. It's not as good as the first but still enjoyable and Pip is the main character instead of Crysta. He helps a young human girl save animals from poachers :) Another classic 90s animated movie that you should watch (if you haven't already) is Cats Don't Dance! It's a very underrated movie and it's really good!
Love the themed outfits for each movie 💚 I watched Ferngully as a kid in school and it definitely had a huge impact on me and I became more environmentally aware because of it. I remember finding the Batty rap really disturbing and was pretty much traumatized by the concept of animal testing to the point that I still felt uneasy seeing it again. 😅
One thing I admired about this movie, when I saw it again years later, is the instrumental score. I love how whenever there’s a scene focused on Hexus or the leveler, the music sounds like something out of a serious horror film! 💀
I just looked this up when I was watching, and I never realized that Alan Silvestri did the score. He's responsible for Forrest Gump, Lilo and Stitch, most of the MCU, The Polar Express, The Bodyguard, What Lies Beneath, Cast Away, Practical Magic, all three Back to the Futures, Romancing the Stone (a personal favorite), etc. You name it and he did it.
BTW the lizard is voiced by Tone loc a rapper, actor, he was recently in the proud family reboot. I'm guessing that's why he had a song. His voice is pretty distinctive.
No way! I just rewatched this the other day, this was one of my favorite childhood movies, but hexxus always terrified me! Thank you for watching this gem 💎 stay safe hon 💕
This movie was one of the few traditionally animated movies made by 20th Century Fox. The year after this, they made another environmental film called Once Upon A Forest (starring Michael Crawford), and the year after that, they released The Pagemaster (starring Macaulay Culkin)! 😎 You should watch both, if you haven’t already!
Idk about "The Pagemaster". I feel like the level of weird for this movie is only palatable as a child. *I* kinda love "The Pagemaster" but I'm pretty sure it's b/c my family rented it from Blockbuster once it came out on VHS. So my nostalgia goggles are firmly in place.
If you like fairies and woodland creatures, you should do a reaction video to the movie "Epic." It's really good. Similar to this film, only it's the human GIRL who gets turned small. The whole deforestation plot reminds me of the horrific scene in "The Secret of Nim" where the tractor almost destroys the mice's house. 22:28 That baby fairy in the right center is so cute! I feel like Thumbellina (from the Don Bluth movie, who's voiced by Jodi Benson, which goes back to Sophia saying this movie is like "The Little Mermaid") and Crysta would be good friends, cause they're both fairies.
I remember this movie being a lot better when I was a kid. Tbh a lot of characters in 90s movies follow this same formula of guy lying to girl cause he likes her, her finding out, him redeeming himself, the end.
I'm not surprised this movie didn't hit. It suffers from nostalgia glasses and the pitfalls of a lot of movies then (ie Thumbelina, Troll in Central Park, Pebble and the Penguin, erc). But it's still one of my favs and def inspired my love of nature in general. Toxic Love is one of the best villains songs and I will die on this hill XD
11:57 Indeed, Zak is a little reprehensible here. The idea is that he doesn’t yet grasp the damage that his lie and his prior occupation do to Krysta and the rainforest. Thus, when he eventually does figure it out (19:07), that will eventually lead to his redemption.
Disney actually tried to sue the makers of this film for having Robin Williams sing even tho this company hired him first but couldn't record any dialogue until Disney hired Robin for Alladin
OMG I used to love this movie as a kid, it was the BOMB!! And I also agree with your point on Zak, he was such a little shit, was NOT worth Crysta's forgiveness lol. Please watch the sequel as well, I love your vids! ❤
This was one of my absolute favorite movies as a kid! I believe I had it on VHS lol. I can still recite the Batty Rap from memory :) It was also my introduction to Tim Curry so when I heard his voice in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, when I watched it for the first time a couple years ago, I immediately recognized Hexxus! XD "Toxic Love" is a banger imo. I definitely agree that Crysta and Ariel have similar personalities. BTW your hair color is beautiful and still so vibrant, how did you do it?
My friend helps me dye it! I think it helps that I chose a dark blue color because it doesn't fade as easily. I also only shampoo my roots once/2x a week, so the ends still maintain their color :)
even as a kid I was so confused why she chose the human over Pip, like c'mon dude be for real... also Hexxus never scared me... but that weird lizard definitely gives me a visceral reaction to this day
FernGully scared me so much as a child that I threw away the VHS tape, I watched it years later though as a teenager and fell in love with the movie! Still love it to this day
Zak technically didn't lie about the x's on the tree. They were kind of a barrier because only the trees with x's could be cut down. They weren't originally going that deep into the rainforest until Hexus demanded going to Fern Gully. I haven't seen the movie in a long time but I used to watch it a lot on VHS. Its definitely one of those "if you were a kid you could enjoy it, overlooking flaws" it was a fun movie and the Robin Williams jokes landed to a child audience Batty was almost everyone's favorite I knew growing up.
3:23 It always feels good to hear another person say that. 🥰 Also, yes, this movie was released in 1992, the same year as Disney’s Aladdin (which also starred Robin Williams and Douglas Seale).
Personally, I did enjoy this movie when I was younger and I still do now as an adult. Maybe not one of my personal favorites but it's still enjoyable despite there being some moments where it could be better. Also, I would love your reaction to EPIC, it's one of my favorites.
If you want a way better environmental animated movie from around the same time as Ferngully I have to recommend "Once Upon A Forest". It has better character motivation and plot and the main animal characters are so adorable 🥺.
Knowing what I know now about the behind the scenes of this movie makes me wonder if that's why it didn't hit as well? Considering Disney was actively trying to kill it before it started because they didn't like that Robin Williams was working on it, first.
This movie made me realize that I was bisexual, real talk. When I was younger, I always had a crush on Crista (she was one of my awakenings NGL), but always felt weird when listening to the villain song. I later realized that Hexuus, in a weird way, was also an awakening for me.
I love Batty Koda. Don’t know why you didn’t like him, but he was one of my favorites. I still enjoy his humor. 😁 Also, not sure if noticed that Pip was voiced by Christian Slater. 🥰
If Zack's ID said Australia, at least the cassowairies were accurate as they're native to Northern Australia. The singing lizzard was a goana and those are in Australia too. They're both also in New Guinea, Indonesia and New Zealand tropical forests.
Fun Fact: Christian Slater who voices Pips and Samantha Mathis who voices Crysta both appear in the movie “Broken Arrow” 4 years later with John Travolta.
I'm just now realizing how big of an impact this movie had on my personality. I was so serious about environmentalism as a kid, and I still get pretty miserable when anyone cuts down a tree in my neighborhood.
Furngully is such a great movie, the villain, the plot, the underlying message, they all come together to make an amazing story. The second one was a major disappointment 😔
I want you to understand that this movie is somewhat misleading. Rainforests are not a good source of lumber, the trees are mostly threatened by strip mining operations and expansion of farmland in areas that have low technology levels or vast mineral resources. The trees we log out for lumber production are replaced with younger trees as they are cut down so that there will always be more for future generations. The general rule is two saplings for every one tree taken.
So this movie...I remember being interested in seeing it as a kid based on one preview and eventually we did see it at the age of 8 and I really wasn't all that crazy about. The animation was nice. But some of the lingo was really distracting and there were awkward parts of the animation that rubbed me the wrong way. I did like Batty but I feel Robin Williams was put to better use as the Genie. He just felt more like an actual character because he did crack a lot of jokes but there was also a lot of pathos to that character particularly when he's talking about freedom or when he gives Aladdin some earnest advice. Regarding Hexxus, he was definitely the highlight. Even when doing crummy animated films, Tim Curry puts his all into whatever villains he plays. Speaking of Avatar, you have reacted to another movie that's been compared to that: Atlantis. Guy having a romance with one of the natives? Check. Tomboy mechanic? Check. A power source that gives the natives life? Check. Military villain who acts all affable and suave and wants to steal said life force? You betcha!
She's never seen fire, because she lives in a rainforest, where it is perpetually wet so fires don't tend to happen unless there is a huge environmental issue going on.
Animal accurately? That’s the cool part of this movie, the animators spent time in the Australian rainforest (where this movie is set) and all the animals, plants and landscapes in the movie are based on what they saw! Leeches and glowing mushrooms included!
When this film first came out saving the rainforest was a big thing on tv and stuff they even had clothing for small children with save the rainforest on it. The film as a whole is for kids but it's suppose to be a bit on the heavy side
12:01 "FernGully: The Last Rainforest" is so good but I grew up with this movie since I was 2 years old and it's been 31 years, my favorite character has to be Crysta because she's curious at everything but I would tell her about human stuff and learn it from me or anyone else
I have fever dream memories of watching this when I was little. The wacky bat, the tree harvester, the big bad tree and tree demon bad guy, and the fairy touching some fire and being hurt.
This movie was such a staple in my home. I honestly think it teaches a lot of compassion. Could it have been done better? For sure. But I think it was great for what it was.
Wow! I saw this movie when I was young, it was so long ago I thought I didn't think it existed my mom said it came out when she was a kid, but the theme really reminds me of Blue Sky's Epic .
Seeker made a good video about how we saved the rainforest (Brazil). the movement wade HUGE int hte late 90's but at some point people declared the rainforest saved and stopped caring and soon after the deforrestation continued
15:09 The animals are all native to Australia. The goofy birds are Cassowaries and the blue lizard guy is a blue goanna. And many of the other animals are of the many wildlife of the Australian rainforest and outback.
Not to forgive Zak, he shouldn't have lied and acted like an ass, but maybe he gave off would-only-do-things-for-a-pretty-girl because his permit thing said he was 16. Teens tend to be like that lol
I grew up watching ferngully, definitely my favorite movie when I was a bit younger, the hexus scenes always scared me 😔. I'm glad the movie is getting more recognition. I had to re-watch it when people started comparing it to avatar (which I have never seen before until now) and in my opinion there very different, ^^ I love ur video btw
I'm late to the party, 3 weeks late as it turns out. BUT I *lllooooveee* Ferngully. I was 5 or 6 when I saw it for the first time and it became my favorite movie for years. Always kinda had a little crush on Crysta lol.
I believe the logic as to why he is like gaining some power or feeling more what the trees are goes back to what Magic said about the fact that everyone can call of the powers of the magic of life.
There's another movie it's called Blinky Bill the Mischievous Koala & i feel it did the environmental message, adventure & family moments better than Ferngully, which Blinky Bill i have nostalgia for it, mainly the 90s tv show that is a sequel to said movie, only had 2 Voice actors from Australia & in the first movie it's both live action & animation, there was a Christmas movie afterwards & a CGI movie & tv series as well & a puppet & live action series from the 80s, but we don't really talk about that much. It was done by Yoram Gross Studio (which you know them as Flying Bark Productions in modern day) who is a legend with animation in Australia since Dot and the Kangaroo which is a really old animated film from the 1970s.
I remember being a kid and I would always play every batty scene on repeat cuz I loved them. Idk why I love hearing Robin Williams say “price check on prune juice Bob”
It's because you're spoiled by good musical cartoons. This was what every cartoon musical was like until about "Little Mermaid". Also, I think this was peak Robin Williams caught up in his addiction (or withdrawals... This was the year).
Cutting the tree did not release hexxus, hexxus was already being released slowly as soon as the paint was marked on the tree which gave hexxus toxic fuel and small hexxus got bigger because of more toxic fumes from the machine, but yea the trees being cut down hurts the rainforest environment, hexxus only speeds up that process
There was a shit ton of controversy within Disney about the movie and voice actors, it almost wasn't made until a different company picked it up word for word. There's lots of information out there to do homework with. Unless the point was to dive in blind.
Aight can we all collectively ignore the fact that one hair piece is uncurled pls LOL 😭 it's so ugly 😭

I wasn't gonna say anything 😭

Thank you so much for reacting to a movie i grew up watching. We appreciate you ❤
Fun fact: this movie was made to raise awareness about deforestation and a lot of the money it made went to restoring some of the damage.
LOVE that
Granted, it would help if we covered that grazing land and mining tends to be more of the reason for deforestation than logging, but still.
That's really sweet
And then Avatar tried to play the same ideas….

Always gave me nightmares as a kid! The gas! And the yellow dragons! 😳
"A part of you will always stay"
With all the bedroom eyes fairy girl was flashing, I bet there is. Three words. Fairy child support
To be fair to the lizard....
They did the same thing with the crab and the song Shiny in Moana. Lol and it was brilliant.
I loved this movie as a kid. I don't remember much now, except the sludge monster. The sludge monster was terrifying.
Knowing what I know now about the behind the scenes of this movie makes me wonder if that's why it didn't hit as well? Considering Disney was actively trying to kill it before it started because they didn't like that Robin Williams was working on it, first.
I like how Disney pre buyout era was trying to kill off other animation companies, they're like a parasite
I fucking LOVED Fern Gully. I'd always watch it on roadtrips
“Humans don’t have tails! They have big, big bottoms that they wear with bad shorts! They walk around going, ‘HI, HELEN!!!’” I love him so much 🥲🥰
This movie made me realize that I was bisexual, real talk. When I was younger, I always had a crush on Crista (she was one of my awakenings NGL), but always felt weird when listening to the villain song. I later realized that Hexuus, in a weird way, was also an awakening for me.
Just so you know, this tropical rainforest is set in northeastern Australia. You can tell because of the wildlife and the mention of Mount Warning.
I loved Fern Gully and it was totally the show I had in mind while sitting in the theater for Avatar
The plot of 'person is shown the error of their ways through living with a local population' is as old as colonizing literature 😅
I love Batty Koda. Don’t know why you didn’t like him, but he was one of my favorites. I still enjoy his humor. 😁
Also, not sure if noticed that Pip was voiced by Christian Slater. 🥰
If Zack's ID said Australia, at least the cassowairies were accurate as they're native to Northern Australia. The singing lizzard was a goana and those are in Australia too. They're both also in New Guinea, Indonesia and New Zealand tropical forests.
I always loved the scene where they jump across the puddles and they turn gold, I tried to do it as a kid lol.
This was such a childhood favorite. I watched this on VHS many many times lol
Omg yes! Ferngully is a childhood fave!
I had such a crush on both of the main characters as a kid
Fun Fact: Christian Slater who voices Pips and Samantha Mathis who voices Crysta both appear in the movie “Broken Arrow” 4 years later with John Travolta.
I'm just now realizing how big of an impact this movie had on my personality. I was so serious about environmentalism as a kid, and I still get pretty miserable when anyone cuts down a tree in my neighborhood.
Furngully is such a great movie, the villain, the plot, the underlying message, they all come together to make an amazing story. The second one was a major disappointment 😔
MY FUCKING CHILDHOOD AHHHHH
This movie was both beautiful and traumatic for me growing up, I fucking love this movie.
You betcha!
Loved this movie as a kid. Tim Curry rules
She's never seen fire, because she lives in a rainforest, where it is perpetually wet so fires don't tend to happen unless there is a huge environmental issue going on.
I freaked out so much when he looked down like that, my heart.....
I'm definitely too old too. When both you and I saw him look down, I thought he was looking down at something else too 😆
I have fever dream memories of watching this when I was little. The wacky bat, the tree harvester, the big bad tree and tree demon bad guy, and the fairy touching some fire and being hurt.
I fucking LOVE this movie!!! Also, I agree, I miss 2D animation so much! This move is the perfect representation of that!
Soooo, the red-head fairy is voiced by Christian Slater. I only realized this like 20 years later XD
This movie was such a staple in my home. I honestly think it teaches a lot of compassion. Could it have been done better? For sure. But I think it was great for what it was.
The Lizard character was voiced by a popular rapper of the 90s, Tone Loc
Wow! I saw this movie when I was young, it was so long ago I thought I didn't think it existed
my mom said it came out when she was a kid, but the theme really reminds me of Blue Sky's Epic .
Omg I thought people didn’t know this existed 😢 so happy your reacting to this
Seeker made a good video about how we saved the rainforest (Brazil). the movement wade HUGE int hte late 90's but at some point people declared the rainforest saved and stopped caring and soon after the deforrestation continued
15:09 The animals are all native to Australia. The goofy birds are Cassowaries and the blue lizard guy is a blue goanna. And many of the other animals are of the many wildlife of the Australian rainforest and outback.
I absolutely loved fern gully as a kid. I watched it non-stop.
I only watched this once as a kid and it scared the bejeezus out of me, so let’s see how I do with this 25 years later 😅😂
Not to forgive Zak, he shouldn't have lied and acted like an ass, but maybe he gave off would-only-do-things-for-a-pretty-girl because his permit thing said he was 16. Teens tend to be like that lol
I actually didn't catch his age during the first watch, so I thought he was a lot older LMFAO
"at least pip gets his girl back" lmfao
How this got a G rating is beyond me 😂, 92 was a very different time I guess.
i had a crush on Crysta and Hexus growing up🧍‼️
Your movie picks are always so unique but can somehow match my taste every time ❤️ i really hope for you this goes viral cuz this movie deserves!!!
Hehe yeah my movie choices are pretty random 😅 but I'm glad you enjoy them 🥰💙
Hexxus was my sexual awakening 👀
No because I was literally thinking if anyone was attracted to Hexxus with how Tim Curry was basically c*mming in his song LMFAO
@@SophiaPhannn GIRL WHAT
There's another movie it's called Blinky Bill the Mischievous Koala & i feel it did the environmental message, adventure & family moments better than Ferngully, which Blinky Bill i have nostalgia for it, mainly the 90s tv show that is a sequel to said movie, only had 2 Voice actors from Australia & in the first movie it's both live action & animation, there was a Christmas movie afterwards & a CGI movie & tv series as well & a puppet & live action series from the 80s, but we don't really talk about that much. It was done by Yoram Gross Studio (which you know them as Flying Bark Productions in modern day) who is a legend with animation in Australia since Dot and the Kangaroo which is a really old animated film from the 1970s.
Fern Gully is the first film I remember seeing at the cinema.
One of my FAVORITE movie series. Obsessed with it.
