      Jetboats were developed in New Zealand in the 50's. They have been running those rivers since. Your concern may well be valid but those river systems are broad and fast flowing over former glacial rocks. I would imaging it would be more damaging if they were closer to the river banks.

    One question: how is the engine cooled? It absorbs water directly from the river or how does it do it?

    • @torqingheads
      @torqingheads 6 месяцев назад

      Mini boats usually pump river water straight through the engine to save weight which also cools the exhaust on the way out. Bigger boats usually use a heat exchanger with a self contained coolant system.

    I understand these are propelled by jets but how does the water get _into_ the engine if it only needs one inch of water? Do the inlets point straight down and it sucks it up? Also, what happens with objects (stones, etc) in the water? I assume there is some filter to keep them out?

    • @jimthomas1989
      @jimthomas1989 Год назад +1

      It's a square opening on the bottom of the boat with a mesh screen and it's simply a water pump that is ran by the engine that sucks in huge amounts of water and forces it a small stream or jet stream out the rear and pushes the boat forward .

    How do these pick up enough water to provide that kind of thrust in such shallow water and also not just suck up rocks?

    • @torqingheads
      @torqingheads 6 месяцев назад

      The jet unit sucks water through a grill on the bottom of the hull and pumps it out at high pressure through a steerable nozzle. The grill usually only gets blocked when the boat is stationary or slow moving in very shallow water. At high speed if you throttle off when 'straightlining' across shingle bars it usually wont block up.
