This is something that kinda feels wrong to say, but I think about the fact that the Wiimote improved Pikmin controls so much that literally any system that tries to replace and/or mimic it has jank and issues... and Nintendo is moving on from Wiimotes.

I wish 1+2 HD and Pikmin 4 let you control the cursor with movement all the time without holding down and releasing buttons.

Now I see why the devs thought pik3 was hard and nerfed everything and made an easy mode. They were playing with broken controls!

See they had purple pikmin in pikmin 2, so they could go harder and make fun difficult challenges

Really appreciate these type of videos that go in depth about motion controls. Are you planning to do the same for pikmin 1/2 Switch & Pikmin 4?

Thanks! I only made this video because I was upset at all the things Pikmin 3 Deluxe did wrong. So far I can't find anything too egregious about the other games.

@@srb2EspyoThank you for making this video. I'm new to the pikmin series and recently played them in order on the switch. Got used to 1, 2, and 4 super quickly, but for the life of me could NOT stand 3 deluxe because of the small inconsistencies I felt but couldn't understand. You've analyzed all of them in this video so I can put some logic behind my frustrations, thank you so much.
maybe after finishing 4 I'll go back to give 3 another try, but for now it's easily my most hated entry of the series purely because of the janky controls

@@misse4730 Thanks for the words! Yeah, Pikmin 3 Deluxe is definitely the odd one out of the bunch. My recommendation would be to focus solely on stick-only mode so you can at least somewhat enjoy the game, since besides the controls it's a genuinely pleasant game!

Whenever Nintendo tries to "fix" Pikmins controls its *always* one step forward two steps back
    Yes 3 and 4 work
But the better you get the more the controls get in your way, and the more boring the game gets as well.
Pikmin 1 and 2 has a high skill floor and a high skill ceiling
While 3 and 4 have a low skill floor and a low skill ceiling

Thank you for making this, this has been bothering me for a while. The gyro just seems wrong, like instead of mapping the gyro to a point on screen, it maps it to the game space itself. It just feels weird and you end up aiming at the wrong spot because of that.

so that's why we're getting gyro controls in pikifen

Every day I wonder to myself: "Why did the devs feel that they needed to change the way the camera and cursor (and by extension the way you throw pikmin) in pikmin 3?
Pikmin 2 and it's new play control port's controls didn't need to be changed!"
(also fun fact: despite making it so that having a longer whistle range than throwing range was standard across sticks and gyro they removed the indication from new play control that shows where pikmin will land when your cursor goes past throwing range)
Changes like this and the camera being stuck orbiting around the character at a set distance compared to pikmin 2's extremely flexible and useful camera (and good aiming skill and swarming being replaced by lock-on and charging probably as a result of that restrictive camera) make me wonder what the hell the devs were on while making pikmin 3.
They axed the ability to switch pikmin maturity. (because they wanted the barely used (fight me on this) dodge buttons on the d-pad instead)
And finally for some fukin' reason they decided to make the swap pikmin type buttons inverted, unlike in the other pikmin games. (L moves list right while R moves list left)
Pikmin 3's controls staff must be a bunch of raving lunatics working in the nintendo office basement.

I think the reason L swaps pikmin right is because on gyro pointer controls the R button is used to reset gyro. And swapping right is the more useful one to have as a default

I thought a lot about this when I first new about the controls schemes of this game. The mere existence of the Gyro-Stick controls misplaced me, they were so weird and I kept going around what their purpose were or how did they exactly work. I am happy that I am not the only guy thinking a lot about this control stuff, this is such a specific video it is perfect.
I also don't get why both players need to be tied to the same control scheme. So far I have played the demo of the game, and I was playing with someone that was using a wired controller which didn't support gyro, so I was forced to use stick controls because of the other player, while I prefer more the gyro pointer mode.
I also remember playing several times Bingo Battle in the Wii U version with friends back in the day, and while I used the Wii Remote because I preferred it, every friend I played with wanted to use the Gamepad instead of a second Wii Remote, I guess because they were scared of the pointer of just were too accustomed to playing with "normal" controllers in Play Station or Xbox and so. I can't imagine me getting 3 Deluxe, going to play Bingo Battle with a friend, and have to forcibly settle to use stick controls because the other player will most likely reject gyro, which was an issue that the Wii U version didn't have.

My gf prefers the wiimote style of movement, I prefer the default, why can't you adjust each like you would tilt controls in MK8

I tought it was easier than a wii mote too throw pikmin. But the motion controlls are better for the most part with the original

In regards to Pikmin 3. Well the Wii U version with a wiiremote is a weird hybrid, if memory serves me right. It uses both pointer & gyro. But i think is gyro based with ir auto calibration. The thing is the pointer behaves the same with a normal wiiremote or a wiimotion+. Of course with the obvious advantages of having gyro.
Why Nintendo just let people plug a wiiremote & sell a new sensor bar? You could have the left joycon like a nunchuck & the wiiremote. Would be great for wii/wii u ports.
